Holy smoke! I am going to guess you are Canadian because you mentioned Winnipeg. I live 1 hour north. Getting my first chickens in May. Life long dream. Glad I found your channel. I am feeling overwhelmed. I will keep watching. Love your enthusiasm. And the roosters of course.
My first video watching you, well, I think you’re pretty outstanding I wanna watch more I like your personality and the way your roosters are always trying to say it how they feel lol
Thank you, great timing on this topic. My baby white silky chicks (ordered from a Silky breeder) are starting to hatch. She sent me a video of the adorable chicks. I currently have 10 adult silky's, 7 roosters and 3 hens. The roosters have worked it out and get along fine. I live in the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Arizona and the silky's do really well in the hotter months. In a separate living space I have 3 barred rock and 4 road island red hens. They are all given ample shade and access to wading pools when it's really hot here. Thanks for all the information you bring us.🐣🐤🐥🐔
From all the info, 7 roosters will run your 3 little hens to death. Are you planning to rehome 6 or get more ladies? I got 7 chicks, 2 are roosters and there is competition between them, so my bad mannered roo runs down the hens, (no dance), then the other follows behind with another unfortunate assault. The rude guy tends to do this to 1 particular hen and chases her away from food and treats. He and she are a pair of Buff Orpingtons. He's gotta go. Your silkies must be so fun to watch though❣🐣🐓
Thank you Madame President, you always brighten our day. 🤗 i finally gave in to my broody bantam, she is sitting on 8 little bantam eggs in a pop up brooder in the garage. She is so happy after being broody every month for the past 3 months to finally have some eggs to sit on, she is making such sweet contented chucks. If all goes well, we may have spring chicks to add to the Banty flock! 🐣 Lord knows we don’t need another roo, King the bantam chases me all over the yard, bless his heart. By the way, he did learn to do the rooster dance! Have a wonderful week! 💕 Lee
Watch out for the straight run chickens. A few times trying that, and I ended up with all males. Extremely disappointed when I bought 30 SR Americanas and every single one was a roo.
It was many years ago at the beginning..well a few years in my life with chickens. And I bought them at Tractor Supply in my town. I no longer buy chickens that way unless I order special. I mostly hatch my own now or buy from a specific hatchery that I love.
I just wanted to say ever since I been watching 👀 your RUclips channel it really inspired me to start raising chickens and it has brought me so much happiness
I live where it gets well below zero Fahrenheit in the winter and around 100 in the summer. It's a very difficult balance, but the cold of winter is longer here than the heat of summer, so I go for the cold tolerant birds and work hard to keep the girls cooler in the summer.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia He was getting picked on by the bigger hens (pulling his head feathers out) I have him in his own coop with the other hen like him. They’ve very happy now and so funny to watch! 😁 I really appreciate your videos, you’ve taught me so much ♥️

I just made a video about chicken . especially right now with these egg prizes. And if chicken is worth it. It matters like you said on the breeds and where you are the right birds. I really thank you so much. You are my chicken lady hero. Thank you
Thank you, Madam President Our first chicks were straight run. Easter Eggers and Barred Rock. We had no clue what straight run meant. Neither did the guy we were talking to when we picked out chicks! We were so lucky. Five chicks - all five were pullets! We lost one hen last week to a javelina. We are still heartbroken 💔. We want to add Orpingtons this spring. Since you’ve lived in Arizona ~ we live south of Prescott ~ Western Central Arizona. Blessings to you and all of Chickenlandia! ❤
You can get bantams or standards as vent-sexed day-old chicks from Meyer Hatchery. This is what I did for my 2nd batch because my first batch of 6 which were straight run turned out to be 4 roosters that had to be rehomed after 4-5 months of raising them. Yes, I paid extra for the vent sexed chicks, but it was only about $7-$9 each. That's way less costly than raising them just to rehome them. I only have bantams. Also, pay the extra to get them vaccinated against Marek's Disease.
Have a plan for what to do when all the ladies you bought...aren't. People order/buy pullets and end up with a cockerel or two STILL all the time (assuming you're not buy sex-linked chicks). I have already made my written list of the few breeds I'm allowed to purchase if I run across them (so my spouse won't worry I will go overboard AND he can't give me grief if I bring a few home, they're ON THE LIST lol). I am thinking there will be more abandoned roosters than ever this year, with such a huge interest in backyard chickens due to egg prices. I have room for another oo (2 diff coops) so I will take one it comes up. Which it may, as I live in a rural area.
Roosters - just like kids when you're on the phone... chicken-keeping - nothing worthwhile is easy 💛 I wonder if there are ginger chickens in Africa...
I very much believe your philosophy with keeping chickens. I preached how I wish everyone would start gardening and raising chickens. The number of chickens I can keep is based on the square footage of my property. I would love a bantam, but I need to choose good layers as opposed to characters. Maybe I can secretly get one bantam with four orpingtons.
I live in NM and we get hot AND cold (like when I was living in N. Ca). I did NOT get to see this video before I started getting chickens but also I got all my first ones from a local breeder. Don't know if that helped or not but the ones I still have are doing fine. Who out there is thinking bantams will be fine in the wild though? My little black silkie can barely hop let alone fly. She'd be gone so quick T^T
We process our extra roosters. My silkies love going broody so I stick our EE eggs and orphington eggs under them. We only ended up with 3 pallets out of all the chicks that our silkies hatched last year. 🤦♀️
There are some official and unofficial chicken breeds here in Greece. One of those that are recognised, is the one we have, called "karaguniki". We have one rooster and 10 hens and they are enough to cover our family needs. They are also dual purpose, quite big birds. We absolutely love them. Some people have asked me the reason why I picked this breed and the answer is so simple. It's an indigenous, local breed. That means that the breed has existed in this area of the world for who knows how long and they are totally adjusted to the climate and the way the seasons appear. I don't know a lot of chicken owners but in all seriousness, shouldn't the adaptability of the animal be one of the top concerns before you get your first flock? Another question I have and I honestly don't understand is why people mix the breeds. What is the gain of doing that? We got our chickens for about a year and yes, I have a lot of questions!
Well, I'm seriously crazy! I live in town, have 5 hens, 4 who lay since last summer, and 2 roosters. I'm wanting to hatch eggs🤔🙄😳, honesty to replace a mean rooster to try for a calmer one. But the eggs! I love them, shared a few n someone gave me $4 for 4 eggs yesterday, they were to be free to his mom, lol. Now he wants more later as his regular guys property flooded in this rain. Wow!
Question. When has it been 120° in Elfrida AZ? The internet says June is the hottest month for Elfrida with an average high temperature of 95.3°, which ranks it as cooler than most places in Arizona. Now Phoenix gets HOT! When I think of hot Arizona I don't think of Elfrida. We have property near there, in Willcox, and I think we had 1 day where it got to 101°. We used to live in Menifee California and temps there would hit 113° for weeks 😬 Like I said, I don't know if it gets that hot in Elfrida, correct me if I'm wrong...
