Didn’t touch on extreme heat specifically too much in this video, but that’s a great one to watch out for too!

Love the video. I've been brooding outside for the past year. I've found that they grow faster, feather out faster, and are happier, and so much easier to care for.

    A lot of good info.
I'm raising chicks here in the AZ desert.
Doing a simple dog kennel, no heaters.
Haven't had any snakes yet. 😮
    Wish me luck. 😊

I just lost 7 4 month old birds to what I assume was heat stress. I have been raising them in a 10 x 10 greenhouse with hardware cloth wrapped around it to keep out predators. They were partially shaded and had plenty of water. We hit mid 90's temps with 110 heat index and they just couldn't get cooled off enough. My fault entirely for not anticipating this problem. This is just a warning to keep an eye on the daily temps.

Oh man, I’m sorry to hear that! The older birds do seem more susceptible to heat stress. We found some of our older chicks panting one day, which is when we had to add more airflow. Extreme weather adds a lot more risk!

Sorry for your loss. Heat stress can be tough on chickens, especially in hot and humid conditions. Ensuring proper ventilation, shade, and constant water supply is crucial. Installing fans or misters can also help. Thanks for the important reminder to monitor temperatures closely.❤

I raise the chicks indoors in a plastic bin for about a week. And then I move them outside with what’s called a mama heating pad set up in the coop. It works beautifully. When you raise them outside, they get used to the weather quicker, they get their feathers in quicker. And they get introduced to the other chickens quicker even if it’s just through a wired dog crate at first.

This year I raised 40 more chicks that are now just starting to lay. The plan is to stock up on freeze dried eggs over the next year or so. After that I will drop my bird count again back to around a dozen just to have fresh eggs to eat and for friends and family. I so enjoy watching your channel! I sincerely hope that you and yours are safe and doing well! Much love, honor, and respect your way!

usually 100% agree with your points, but I was a first timer raising chicks outside and we did great. the "panic peeping" was sort of obvious, and they for sure have a ball poking around finding bugs and stuff❤

p.s. and yes it totally makes sense to watch/mitigate for heat and cold just like you would with a person, or a baby person

About the escapes. For the cage I suggest zip-tying plastic mesh to the cage, including a few zip-ties at the bottom. I don't know if you have a product like gutter-guard in the US, but it would be ideal to run that along the bottom of the sides of the cage (in a roll about 6" / 15cm wide), it is inexpensive. I did a similar thing with a chick (a few weeks old) that I raised inside, because she kept escaping by squeezing through the bars.
I do recommend those collapsible dog crates for all chicken keepers, so very handy. For broodies, for sick/injured chickens, for transporting chickens.

I agree. I put hardware cloth all around the wired dog crate and it works beautifully. The chicks can’t get out. Airflow is great.

I always start mine outdoors in the summer. I’m in Southlake, TX which is in between Dallas and Fort Worth. I just make sure they have water and food and that’s it. I’ve never lost a young chick.. I did lose a 10-12 week old chick.. not sure what happened, but it didn’t appear to be heat related/cold related.

I love your videos. So many people I follow live in much warmer climates/ zones than I do here in central WI, so it's nice to watch someone from the same general area to give me good inspiration for our area. Thank you.

Oh yeah, broody hens are the ticket. They taught me that those little chicks are tough as nails. But mostly because they're hands free and just a joy to watch. Amazing what two week old chicks can do, like go out and retrieve lost chicks that can't find their way back into the run at night.
Zero problems with three broods going for the past three to four weeks except one day about a week ago when one of the girls got into a yote at the edge of the woods. Apparently she blasted off into the woods to draw it away? By the time I got into the thick woods far enough to see her bobbing and weaving through the thick the chicks were back in the yard. I got a glimpse of the yote as it saw me and scrammed. After a head count she was short three chicks, 11 of 14 present. Sitting with some of the birds in the shade a half hour or more later I heard a chick in the woods and as I got there one came out that had found it's way back. Small victories matter so much!
Gonna get me some yotes here before too long.........

I get too excited when the first baby chicks arrive at the feed stores in February.
Plus i like to see some eggs before it gets too cool to have any.
I bought 8 chicks this past February. One Blue Copper Meran truned out to be a rooster, which normally is bad but i think he will be a beautiful rooster!
Two of the sex links started laying this week...so we get a few months of eggs before it gets cold here in SE Texas!

I cannot imagine needing radiant heat during the day if the heat index is 100 degrees. Wouldn't that be unsafe? If the heat panel is under that bin, it's 100 degrees but they want to hide, how hot will it be in there?

    • @OakAbode
      @OakAbode  2 месяца назад +1

Might not need it during the day, but temp will often drop quickly at night. 4:04 Access to temp regulation (both somewhere to warm up and somewhere to cool down) is key!

I did my meat chicks outside this may/june spring brooder was built and moved out of the house and on the deck with a tarp and removable sheeting to keep out rain. Not straight to grads like your littles but also no escaping from them and predator proof too

So, should chicks be exposed to outside temperatures when kept inside, kind of like hardening off a tomato plant when you put it outside, or can they just be put outside and be expected to be fine? I have my first three-week-old chicks, and it feels like no matter how much research i do, I just don't know enough.

Ah, I’m sorry to hear that. We’ve definitely had to work with all our dogs, but once they learn that the chicks and chickens are “ours”, they tend to respect them.
