- Six months after Hurricane Maria, an estimated half a million dogs were wandering the streets of Puerto Rico. The Sato Project has been rescuing and rehabilitating “satos” or, stray dogs, in Puerto Rico since 2011. After the storm, the nonprofit flew humanitarian supplies in on empty planes and put animals on to be flown out of the island for adoption.

It breaks my heart to know that there are many dogs/puppies out there on their own with no owner. But these people give me hope that they can be saved. Thank you.
God. I sold my house on Long Island and moved to Puerto Rico in 2005. I lived in Manati. I didn't realize how bad the homeless animal problem was. Every day, I drove to the beach to feed the dogs and many times save them. Paying out of pocket for vet care and airfare to the states. I ended up pretty much broke. After my wife passed (she was born in Puerto Rico) I'm a gringo I couldn't handle things there alone, I'm in Kansas in section 8 housing. But I would do it over again. Satos are fantastic dogs. I saved many but I also held many as they passed on. I wish you all the best.

My little girl came from sato beach. She was rescued and rehabilitated. She came into our lives 6 years ago and I have never known such love and devotion. She truly rescued our family ❤
My best friend in the world Marley was adopted from Isabella Puerto Rico in 2016. She is the smartest, strongest, cutest most beautiful dog I’ve ever seen in my life . I love her so much, thank you so much for rescuing these dogs they are the best dogs in the entire world.
My dog is a sato from Puerto Rico. HE IS MY LIFE. I love him with all my life and soul! The scars (mental) he suffered as a baby are lifelong and he doesn't trust many people. Well.. he doesn't fully trust anyone but me. But he's an amazing boy and he's my guardian angel.
I thank these people with all of my heart for rescuing my boy and getting him to me ❤️❤️❤️
These people are ANGELS I want them to know that they are the most awesome people ever. You take care of the stray dogs so well. You guys let them have a second chance. You let them know they can trust you. Thank you so much for your work guys. I love you. And being a owner of a dog. I couldn’t see I dog on a street and not help. thx again. I am eagerly waiting for my dog to arrive from Puerto Rico via the Sato Project. My soul dog Tina passed away in July, and I could not bring another dog from Bangladesh. Then I googled a lot and found out that Satos are just like our Desi dogs: strong, resilient, brave, the best. I went looking for Satos and found one who looks and feels like my baby Tina. She will come to me in a few months when the rescue center can book a flight for her with the Sato Project. I am eagerly waiting for that day when I hug her and feel as if Tina is still alive, young and healthy again. They are not saving dogs alone, they are saving people too by uniting them with a soul dog. ❤

In Puerto Rico now, you can’t imagine how big the issue of dogs and cats being left out everywhere in the streets. I mean it’s an epidemic! So sad. I know that blaming it’s not the solution but you almost have to wonder if the owners are being educated about the responsibility that comes from owning a dog or a cat. Lots of the dog owners here in Puerto Rico are barely getting by with their normal everyday necessities but yet they choose to go out and purchase or just take them home and result in abandoning them.
