    Another thought, these opinions are for pets in general, not just piggies. I know a lot of people here in the US don't like to adopt older pets, because they don't have as much time with them. We adopted a 9 year old cat and she lived until 18. My controversial opinion is that senior animals should be adopted before younger ones.

    • @pamelaparker508
      @pamelaparker508 7 дней назад +4

      It takes a special person to seek out an older critter. People enjoy the cuteness of a baby animal, which is part of the reason that adopters want ‘ em young. I appreciate your kindness to the older ones.

      I think it's like that everywhere, here in the Netherlands it's also the older animals that don't get adopted easily. Sad, no animal should spend their senior year(s) in a shelter, but in a nice, loving home.

    • @Mickeyanne_08
      @Mickeyanne_08 6 дней назад +3

      I totally agree with adopting senior dogs and cats because say you adopt an 6-7 year old cat, they easily could have another 10 years in them with proper care. On the other hand most rodents do not live long. Guinea pigs specifically, They have a lifespan of 6-8 years so I do understand why most people would prefer to adopt a 1-2 year old guinea pig over say 4-5 year old guinea pig.

      I really enjoyed the video. Very thought provoking. I love Lumi's little face looking over the gate. I've had a few piggies over the years, normally in pairs. I also had Degu's . I had about 12 over 10 years when my son was growing up. But like with piggies,, you go through so many problems with poor outcomes ( normally teeth problems) After my son went to University, looking after them on my own became really sad as they died off one by one. Our cat died last week and this is the first time in my life I've had no pets, so sad.❤❤❤

    I think pellets, IF they're quality, simply serve to round out a balanced diet and should only be a small portion of their total food intake. The biggest problem with pellets is the utter crap that's available in the store. You're much better off not giving pellets at all if you're just going to buy the crap. Read the ingredients. I still recommend the Oxbow Garden Select specifically

    Opinion 2 - Thank you for saying this and YES. I kept guineas over a 20 year period and absolutely adore them but was devastated when they died, and was similar to you in the way I nursed them etc. They are such wonderful little animals and just don't live long enough. I reached a point many years ago when I just couldn't do it any more. Keeping dogs is even worse, but at least in general their life span is longer and they often give you more warning when they are unwell (if you know them well and know what to look for.) Having said that crisis mode with multiple dogs unwell is utterly devastating. I get my guinea pig fix from your lovely channel - thank you.

    • @kowgyrl
      @kowgyrl 7 дней назад +4

      I made the move in 2015 so things might be different now but, I had to get a very specific pet carrier that's required by the airlines (you get to keep them). They give you very specific requirements for their water and food setup. Although I hope they figured out a better water situation because the water bottles fully drained out into their bedding from all the movements of the whole process, not good.
      They didn't need a passport or any medical requirements or have to be quarantined because of their species. Luckily my 4 were very young, under a year old or I definitely wouldn't recommend importing piggies of older ages, it's really a long and uncomfortable process. I wouldn't do it again. The pet carriers are put in the cargo section of the plane so you can't actually check on them or see them until your final destination.
      When my parents flew back with me, guinea pigs, a dog and my cat, my dad was military so we all rode together (pets and all) in a giant military cargo plane lol, so it was quite a different experience

    Hi, the new place looks great, I saw the next video too, Zelda is so big now. My vetenery hospital in Victoria Australia recommended getting the ovaries taken from all the females to prevent ovarian cysts because it's very common here. I did so, it turned out very well for Star. My 3rd piggy Luna was pregnant when I bought her and Rose and Sadie were able to live with our male Star during the period of time that ge otherwise could have gotten Luna and his sister Sunshine pregnant. He didn't have to ever be a lone guineapig. I decided to get him nutered and when Luna and Sunshine were spayed with only the ovaries taken from the top, they rebonded well. I found on most Facebook guinea pigs groups that getting those surgeries done was very controversial. I had the leave one group due to this.

    For a number of years we took in older guinea pigs who needed a home. Our girls had a happy retirement with us, but inevitably we experienced situations where syringe feeding was necessary. Thank you for this video, especially your 2nd opinion. I had guinea pigs as a child, and the nature of their deaths really shook me, so much so that, as an adult, I realized I wouldn’t be able to emotionally handle having pigs ever again, (or having pets in general) not just because of their habit of being very prone to various illnesses, but also, the inevitability of outliving them. I appreciate your honesty in this video. It’s good to know ones own limitations, especially if it lets animals live with people who are better suited to give them the best quality of life possible. Just because you can own a pet, doesn't mean you should.

    I think these are fair points. Guinea Pigs are definitely a LOT of work and can be expensive to keep. My piggies bring me joy, but if I ever got to the point where I was too overwhelmed or my heart couldn't take losing them anymore I would stop keeping them. As far as syringe feeding, I do it with the intent to get them eating on their own as quickly as possible. I think the longest I ever syringe fed was maybe 10 days, and that was with a piggy that was wanting to eat and I didn't have to force feed him.

    Oh my gosh, thank you for such an honest and real video that many of us encounter,but never speak of as we are shamed in the guinea pig community as it goes against the norm of what is expected in guinea pig care and attitude. My first werewolf skinny guinea pig Harriet was from a pet store, petco. While I would not get any more guinea pigs there or at a store,she was my first and was solo for a long time. I wasn't sure if she would have a friend as she was isolated in her tank and many social issues that I had to work on. I found that perfect friend,Clementine who was another controversial decision as she came from a rescue, but looked sick. She was thin, but when I actually got her home,she was not just thin, but a skeleton. Many wouldn't have bonded her right away to my Harriet, I did, then she didn't want critical care, I didn't push it. I monitored her and she ate and ate and oh my gosh, she and Harriet are like sisters,though I think Cem sees her like a mom, she was three months. Sometimes you have to trust the knowledge you have learned, even if it goes against what others tell you. Thank you for sharing!

    I’d definitely say you’re doing a great job with your piggies, and considering how healthy and how long they live overall proves that they don’t need pellets. 👍 One controversial opinion I thought of is a common one: hay rack or hay pile. I’ve found pros and cons for both. Right now I have mostly orchard grass in the hay racks and have been putting the small pieces of Timothy in a pile. This is because I have one silly piggy who gets hay pokes way too often. I feel whatever works for the specific person and their piggies! 👍

    Syringe feeding can help get through a temporary illness. However, a problem I encountered with long term syringe feeding or giving softened food to rodents is their teeth are not getting ground down. I have hamsters and when they are not eating hard food, their teeth grow and need trimming. I assume the same thing happens with guinea pigs. A sick animal may not tolerate having their teeth trimmed routinely.

    • @RainRemnant

      @@RainRemnant I agree! My hamster Wiggles was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, initially recovered with twice daily medications. However, she declined again and needed supplemental feeding of soft food, then syringe feeds which led to her needing her teeth trimmed. She turned blue during the procedure, so I ended up having to let her go. A younger rodent with tooth issues may tolerate routine trimming, and some do. Saskia at LAGPR has talked about guinea pigs needing teeth trimmed or removed. Autumn Grace had her rabbit's front teeth removed to avoid routine trims: ruclips.net/video/TV45zp_6z4I/видео.html

    I loved every one of these statements that you made in your video! We live in the US. We do not give pellets to our piggies. We have always felt like we see more chalky pee when we give pellets or other issues. So we just stopped doing it. I know living here many vets say you must or should give, but after having kept guinea pigs for almost 20 yrs, we just feel they don’t need them. We have had guinea pigs live to 6.5 yrs on pellets and not on pellets. Our oldest right now is 5 yrs and she does not get pellets. We also do not give her a huge variety of veggies or don’t intro new veggies to her. If we do, we do it in very small amounts. We have seen some of our older pigs have issues with health we we tried giving too much of a new food, so for us, we are much more careful when treating her to something new. She is a foster pig mommy. Nibbler is very tame! She has had several cage mates. Our last several pigs who have passed, passed from some really crazy things. So with that emotional stress and also having to kids who have a really hard time with so much loss, we have divides to foster guinea pigs. We have had our second pair of fosters for a year now. Nibbler is their foster out mommy. We got them when they were 5 weeks old and Nibbler has taught them how to be piggies. When the day comes for Nibbler to go over the Rainbow Bridge, we I’ll foster piggies on and off. This is better for our daughters bc even though they have bonded with this pair (we have had these fosters for about a year now) they are not as bonded as they are to Nibbler. They understand that the two fosters will one day be adopted. Of course the longer we have them, the harder that will be when they are adopted, but it will be a bit easier than if they were actually our pigs. That is a thought for anyone who would like to have guinea pigs, but might not be able to handle having them all if the them. Fostering really helps rescues with space and you get to help tame the piggies for their cuter permanent owners. 😊

    • @anaph8552
      @anaph8552 7 дней назад +4

      I understand what you mean, but I think everyone has their own idea of what it means to keep guinea pigs outdoors. You're probably thinking of those much too small and open two-story hutches or mesh cages that offer far too little space and no protection from the cold. In Germany, these are exactly the examples of how NOT to keep guinea pigs outside. Rather, we have many sources of information with specific criteria on how to RIGHTLY keep guinea pigs outside. These include, for example, having at least 4 healthy guinea pigs in a group that can keep each other warm, a large, dry shelter that is protected from the weather and predators on all sides, and smaller hutches inside the shelter that provide sufficient warmth with bedding, straw and hay. The shelter should also have a large protected run so that the guinea pigs can go outside, if they wish to, to keep themselves warm by moving around or sunbathing. It is also important to switch to an appropriate high-calorie winter diet. Sick, old or weak guinea pigs, on the other hand, should be brought inside. The list goes on...
      While I totaly agree with you, that there a lot of unproper outdoor housing for guinea pigs (especially in a country with very cold winters), there are also a lot of good examples. My favourite example is Erin's Ark. If you search for her video "Keeping Guinea Pigs Outdoors" you will see what I mean.🙂 I think a lot also depends on the country you are living in and how extreme the weather gets.

They had places to hide and a little barn to sleep in at night safely. Piggies don’t dig like rabbits so they do fine with fencing. The weather is so mild where I lived they could be out all year but we had lots of straw for them in colder season. They come out to graze on grass early and evening. They would come running up to us squeaking and begging for treats. We had 30 at one point. Several different families formed. My lead boar was like a stallion. When he napped the whole herd napped! In the barn of course on the hay. I dislike keeping them inside really but now live in the Midwest where it’s a must. I do put them out to graze in their pen in summer but I have to always be careful to provide good shade as they easily overheat. They love wild dandelions and grass. I don't feed pellets very ofter as a vet advised me to cut them out when Gus had bladder sludge. I have adopted many guinea pigs over the years, but always wanted a grey guinea pig. None ever came up for adoption at the right time so I finally gave in and got one from someone who was rehoming an accidental litter, he is a little s!@#, be careful what you wish for 😂

    I loved this video, you can tell that your very experienced especially when you was saying about syringe feeding Piggies and how people stop having them because they can be very difficult when they are unwell and things go wrong, it is a horrible reality but loving them and doing everything to get them better is most important
    You mentioned in the video that having an unwell Guinea Pig is like having a newborn, which would you say is harder? I know you have experience with both

    Tbh, Germany is so much further in animal Care knowledge over all.
    The actual reason they don't feed pellets is because of their health. Pellets are very hard and they can get teeth issues from hard things.
    Guineapigs are grass eaters by nature and that is what they are built for.
    If you're interested, I can give you more information on how to feed your guinea pigs in the most natural way possible.
    There have been a few studies on it that show that they can have such a healthy life if you have them on their own natural diet (which makes sense since they are built for that ofc).
    Lately, I've been trying to figure out a way, to get this to the pig community worldwide. But since there is not a lot of english information out there, my plan is to start simple, by just asking if ppl are actually really interested in a more healthy and natural way of pet keeping (pigs and buns for the time being)?

    In the US this is usually what happens to elderly people. They're put into a nursing home (old folks shelter) and medicated to keep them docile because mostly their adult kids are heinously selfish and want to do the work to kerp them at home nor do these people want to have their aging parents in their own homes! Sorry-not-sorry for the rant. My older rescued piggies helped keep me sane and kept me from proverbially running away from home during the last 5 years of 12 total that i cared for my granny with Alzheimers & incontinence day after day. My granny was very healthy otherwise & very active. I'm disabled and those years were quite difficult. At the time she had 2 fairly wealthy sons. But she raised me to try always to do right, especially when that was hard to do. ❤😊

    My Nini is going on 8. I have never handled any death well. It has been just the two of us against the world since I was figuratively thrown out when my mother, my last parent, was dying. Nini is my only Family and my Roommate. My longest break was three years-after my much loved 8 year old boy Fictionary died from cancer. But I became a Small Animal Volunteer at a shelter and the minute I heard Guinea Pig noises my heart felt at home. So I adopted Nini's late sister Kali and brother Munchkin. With them 8+ years ago I lost them both in one December. My 1st double loss in all my years of piggy parenting. I was still seriously grieving when I adopted Nini in February. Sun was her 8th Gotcha Day. I still miss Kali and Munchkin and I am trying to enjoy Nini without worrying about losing her. Sun was also our 1 year anniversary in apt #2. My last 7 GPs have been shelter rescues. I go by who my heart responds to not what they look like.

    I had a vet in the US tell me that my two guinea pigs needed two pallet bowls because apparently they’re going to argue over one even though my girls literally eat out of the same bowl without being bothered as much as I don’t like arguing with vets it just seems so ridiculous to me

      Sometimes I wonder if even exotic vets are really clued in to guinea pig behavior as opposed to just physical health. That sounds totally weird to me as well because I have 6 guinea pigs who eat from a single pellet dish.

    One of my controversial opinions is that a small amount of pelleted food (a rounded tablespoon per guinea pig) is fine. Adds variety, nutrients and dish tipping is fun for my two pigs. Usually there are pellet leftovers by the end of the day mixed with...well you know, which I toss. Another controversial thing that I do is; partially as a taming treat, partially per a vet's instruction, is to hand feed each pig 1/2 vitamin-C/timothy wafer per day. My final (that I will document here😉) controversial decision is that I also have cats. I have always had cats and guinea pigs. Never had a problem, well until yesterday. I adopt all of my animals from shelters. About 4 months ago I adopted second cat. This cat seemingly has Houdini DNA. He opens closed cabinets, doors, boxes and yesterday he figured out how to open the pigs' cage. I woke up to find my cat sleeping on top of one of the pig's wooden houses with 2 extremely confused, but not scared with no teeth chattering, guinea pigs milling around in the cage. What can I say? I was 50%horrified and 50%laughing to tears when it happened. The cage now has a childproof lock.

    A lot of guinea pig food brands are full of ingredients that are totally alien to what they would eat in the wild - soya, molasses etc for example. Would the wild guinea pigs have developed bladder stones as much as domestic guinea pigs do ? I don't think so. Soya is high in oxalates. Syringe feeding for too long is not good for their digestive systems. I love Buff coloured guinea pigs. Good breeders don't breed for profit. They usually breed them to get the ideal show guinea pigs. Great channel 👍. When you want to say something, just say it. That's what I do 😂

      Pellets can have quite a lot of calcium in them. I had a GP that was prone to sludge/stones and was advised to cut out pellets for a while. It worked and after that I really limited the pellets. They get their vit c from the veg I give them

    • @antonelladecosta2641

      I’m considering to cut out pellets too. My main problem is that there is no way to distribute it evenly between guinea pigs, so the younger one eats a lot more than he should. But I do worry about vitamin c and if they’ll get enough from just their vegetables.

    Maybe worth mentioning that pedigree and Petco are quite different. Those breeds cease to exist if they’re not bred with each other due to their rezessive gene. Bred one with a normal piggy and you only ever get normal piggies.

    No pellets isn't controversial when I've fed my pigs those for the years I owned them, but found they were really overkill or for when I'd not be able to be home for veggie feedings. If the furry potatoes are getting plenty of veggies, zero need for pellets. My girls got both, just because I'm a spoiler so my pets get everything they could need. Key word need, and when I get piggies again I plan to just need to get hay, bedding, and veggies. So those who think piggies need pellets are only trying to spark up controversy where it doesn't apply.

    I live in Poland and people here usually feed their guinea pigs with pellets. That's what the internet says, so that's what people do. But my vet, who is one of the most famous guinea pig vets in Poland, said that guinea pigs do not have to eat pellets at all. I feed my guinea pigs hay, vegetables and fresh grass. They haven't had pellets for 4 years. My guinea pigs have not been sick for 3 years. Now they are seniors, so it is known that age-related diseases have appeared. I give them medications twice a day now. The vet bills are also huge because I have 4 piggies. But I love all my piggies and I will spend all my money to keep them healthy and happy. ❤❤❤
