  • Julie Sinaw was on vacation in Puerto Rico when she first became aware of the island's large population of stray dogs. That's when the seed was planted to form Animal Lighthouse Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues stray dogs in Puerto Rico and brings them to New York for adoption.

No doubt there are areas of Puerto Rico riddled with poverty and there are times families need to choose..feed themselves or feed the dogs. Education on spay and neutering is definitely needed. When a hurricane strikes like when Hurricane Maria made landfall. Most of the shelters were destroyed. These animals were left to fend for themselves during evacuations..and breed..breed..breed. Puerto Rico is a U.S territory..we as a whole need to take care of ours. My money and time goes to helping the animals of Puerto Rico. They are on an island. There is no where to go. The government of PR went to all the housing projects and forcefully took everyone's pet making the projects animal free..killing the dogs by throwing them off a bridge. Some survived.😢 The Island needs our help. Spay and Neuter..educate..support. Be better..Do better!

This is not the only organization outside of Puerto Rico that does this. I wonder if they try to get the dogs adopted in Puerto Rico first before flying them out to NY. It gives the impression that Puerto ricans are not capable of taking care of animals, and therefore they need to go to the states. I admire what they do and of course it is necessary. I just wonder if they try to solve the problem within.

Many of the dogs are posted on social media to get adopted on the island. The organizations that rescue the dogs would like to have them adopted on the island, it would save them from having to fundraise for the flight but many people on the island do not want them or they only want pure breeds. If a person in Puerto Rico wants to adopt a dog or cat there are rescue organizations on the island or they can go to any beach or shopping center parking lot and find a dog to take home and rescue. The biggest problem is the lack of spaying and neutering by pet owners. The Humane Society of the United States and other organizations have held and will hold in the future Spayathons. Pet owners can take their pets there to get sterilized for free.
