  • In this video, Wilson installs an RDS diesel auxiliary fuel tank in the bed of our 2018 F-350 diesel truck. We wanted to extend the range we could travel without the hassle of having to stop as often for fuel. With kids, every stop at a fuel station, which is also difficult with a fifth wheel sometimes, costs us a lot in pricey truck stop fuel and extra money in drinks and snacks when the kids go in the store plus, it's just inconvenient and time consuming. This is a complete install video that will show you the process of installing the tank. You will need to have some basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical and some basic tools to do the job right. It is not a difficult install but it is essential that you do it the right way. Always follow all federal laws regarding fuel tank installations and requirements and remember this video is for entertainment purposes only, that's my disclaimer and you assume all risk if you attempt to brave this endeavor on your own. I am not an expert and this is simply my experience installing the tank/toolbox combo.
    We are a family of 4 who loves to travel. In 2019, we bought a 30 ft. travel trailer and decided to make our dreams happen by getting out on the road. Since then, we have upgraded to a 39' Fifth Wheel Mid-Bunkhouse and a 2018 Ford F-350 Diesel and are loving the upgrade for our family. We have always LOVED traveling and now seeing our world on the road has given us opportunities to see and make more memories as a family. We are teachers and are blessed to have the same "vacation" schedule, so we make the most of it with our kids by being both weekend warriors and "school schedule" traveling--We call ourselves part-timers. We hope to share what we learn while exploring this beautiful world around us and inspire you to get out and see it, too.

    OUTSTANDING video. I just purchased my 63 gal RDS Aux tank for my F-350 (2020). Your video gave me the needed info to install my tank. I was unaware that my fill tube was metal..... I plan to install the exact system (fuel pump, and filter) as you did.We pull a Montana 41' 5th wheel, 10 miles to the gallon, means stopping every 200 miles to refuel.... so this is my spring time project before camping season....THANK YOU SIR.... Nice video, I installed the same tank minus the toolbox in my 2008 Duramax. I only have gravity feed to fill my tank right now (a very slow process). I bought a 12-volt solenoid valve and pump which I am going to install with a switch inside my pickup to control it. I have done several trips empty and pulling my horse trailer, and it is nice not to have to find a place to stop. I just have to stop and open the valve and close it when it is full. Once the pump is installed it should fill my main tank a lot faster. I also fill up at the nearby Costco and diesel fuel is usually 50 cents cheaper per gallon.

    • @OnTheMewve

      I really like the ability to choose where I fuel up instead of being forced to buy expensive fuel along the interstate as we travel, and that was the main purpose of me buying this tank. I also like the solenoid and pump as I believe it's faster and I like to control it from the cab. It's a convenience item at the end of the day but a great one. Good question! I decided the pump would control the flow a little more when needed. I didn't want to have to leave the tank open all the time just in case something happens. Nice video. I had a couple of questions.
    Does one side of the latch system release both so you can access the tool box with only using one side of the latch? I'm wondering if I would have to climb into the bed of the truck to get at both handles to fill.
    I am assuming you cant leave the the upfitter switch on all the time or you would run the risk of burning out your pump. You must have to turn the switch on and once your main tank is full turn it off. Trying to decide if a gravity fed system would be better that way its always filling.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @OnTheMewve
      @OnTheMewve  2 года назад +2

      Hey Jacob, thanks for the comment and compliment. I can open my box with only one latch so it’s not a problem. You are right about the upfitter switch, it must be manually turned on to engage the pump. I choose a low flow pump so it’s slow but steady. When I see the gauge on the truck dash nearing full I just flip the switch and I’m done. I like having control over when I fuel versus the gravity fed version but do what you feel comfortable with. Let me know how your install goes and if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and we’d love for you to hit that subscribe button if you haven’t ~ Wilson

    Excellent video with great detail. I do have some questions. On the pump: at 20 gallons an hour, is it really worth having the pump? Seems like gravity feed would give you about the same. If the pump were not energized but the solenoid was, would gravity feed work through the pump (possibly restricted)? Would the pump overpower the rollover valve and overfill the tank. Have you tested your system to see if there would be overfill leakage? I have read accounts of this system used via gravity feed and one of the tank vents leaking. For safety, you might want to test the shutoff by allowing the system to try to overfill. If you get leakage there, you may want to retry the test without the pump inline and only the solenoid. You might be able to make another video on just the running of the upfitter wire.

    • @OnTheMewve
      @OnTheMewve  Год назад

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. So I am going on almost two years of having this install and it is functioning great. I like the control of the pump from the cab personally. Gravity would probably be close to the same due to the slow pump speed as you stated. I don't see why the solenoid would not allow it but haven't tried that function. I have never had an overfill resulting in an spill so far and my vent has worked effectively without any spillage. Those are good ideas to test out. Thanks for the feedback and questions. ~Wilson

    Good detail on your video, thanks. Not sure why you thought you needed a filter? Fuel coming in from the aux tank is the same as fuel being put in the factory fill, not expected to be filtered right? All of it will go through the very large and very fine factory filter/water separator. Now you have a very small and easy to clog filter in a difficult to service location. Maybe not a good long term setup? Also, I do not think that solenoid valve is rated for continuous service, will over heat if left on. Having a switch turned on, that you have to remember off in a short time, or fuel will be spilling out near a hot solenoid valve, seems risky. I am preparing to install a tank and comparing this more expensive way to the cheaper and more simple gravity feed. Worried about a gravity setup overfilling the factory tank, some say it does not with a good fuel cap. Makes sense if topping off the factory tank and parking the truck leaning toward the cap doesn't spill fuel. Also worried about a low fuel light coming on due to the fuel gauge staying at full for a long time, some say it doesn't, others say it does.

    • @OnTheMewve
      @OnTheMewve  2 года назад +1

      So the filter was an added level for dirt filtration from the toolbox side and the cap removal process each time as it gets placed in the bed. A year later and I’ve never had a filter issue. The solenoid is rated for use for more than an hour. It usually takes me no longer than 30 minutes to fill. When I date filling the just check the gauge on the dash and have never had an overflow issue. As far as a light, I’ve never had a fuel light come on randomly. Some people like the setup I have and some like gravity, I personally like to flip the rocker switch in the cab and not have to worry. Thanks for checking out the video and let me know if you have any other questions. ~Wilson

Run the ground to the body, sand a spot of the overspray to make sure you have a good ground connection. I hope that helps, now I wish I'd have filmed the wiring part. Thank you for the video. But instead of a solenoid valve, I used a motorized 12-volt ball valve (HSH-Flo 2 Way 3/8"12VDC Brass On/Off CR2-01 2 Wires Control Electrical Motorized Ball Valve ). It has two positions ON or OFF. And NEVER was heated, like a solenoid. It needs a NEGATIV wire, a continuous POSITIV wire, and a POSITIV wire switcher for ON/OFF. If I turn my truck OFF - my valve automatically switches OFF. Very convenient.

My questions are, after having the tank for 1 year, are you still happy with the purchase? Is it heavy duty enough for you and does it clear your 5th wheel easily? Do you think it would fit underneath a Tonto cover? Thank you very much, Sean

      Hey Sean, we love the tank and it is still holding up great. We have had it almost two years now and had no issues with any components. We like the fact that we don’t have to stop as often and can pick where we want to buy fuel instead of paying high prices at truck stops. We have had no issues with clearance as it is completely ahead of our hitch and it’s not even close. As far as tonneau covers, some clear some do not. Our Bakflip cover clears but does not allow the lid to open all the way, but I can still fuel and get to my tools without major issues. I hope this helps and good luck with your install. ~Wilson and Kelli

    • @OnTheMewve

      You could just use the solenoid and it would gravity feed, not sure how fast it will fill. Even with the fuel pump it’s slow.

  • @Calkidd
    @Calkidd Месяц назад +1

    After watching your video, I have a question. I thought this was designed to be a gravity fed system? I also thought the "rollover ball" was designed to shut off the transfer of fuel when the main tank is full. Maybe i missed it in the video, and you mentioned why you went with a mechanical setup.

    • @OnTheMewve
      @OnTheMewve  Месяц назад

      Many people do use the gravity system
      Instead of the mechanical setup like I did. I like the control of the system from the cab of my truck and that’s why I went with this setup. The rollover valve is for an emergency and would stop the flow of diesel in case the truck rolls over in an accident by closing off the valve with a gravity fed ball that plugs it. I’m not sure that the rollover valve would stop the tank from an overfill but the vent system should. I turn the switch off in the cab when my gauge shows full. As long as you keep a watch on it you will not have any problems with any overfill, but if you fail to turn it off it will build pressure in the tank. Good luck with whichever design you go with and thanks for watching ~Wilson

      So, a tank more like this would be better for what you are talking about amzn.to/3XuYAym You would need a pump on top of the transfer tank for this specific purpose as well, something like this amzn.to/3Xs3YSD . It is a different setup but you could still set it up as both if you want to. I wanted to keep my bed cover on the truck so I decided against the transfer pump on top but my father-in-law has the option on his truck for both. Thanks for watching and commenting ~Wilson

    Did you really need the pump? I know it helps but I've seen a few videos of just gravity fed.

    • @OnTheMewve
      @OnTheMewve  2 года назад

      Hey Billy, yes, I feel like the pump is necessary. I think the gravity fed would be too slow of a feed for the system. The fuel hose is so narrow that it would take too long for my needs, I haul a fifth wheel. I have the Ford Factory Upfitter switches in my truck and I wired it to one of those. My Father-in-law just has an after market switch installed on the dash, so that’s an easy fix if you don’t have factory switches. I watch it fill up and then turn it off when it nears full on the fuel gauge in the display. I hope this helps you and I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Thanks ~ Wilson

      @@OnTheMewve One other quick question regarding gravity flow and placement of the pump and solenoid on the plate and screwed to the frame underneath.... I want to do the same as you and my question is, if the hose from the auxiliary tank goes through the bed, and then connects to the pump solenoid combo on the frame, this sits far lower in height compared to where roll over valve is located on the filler neck, so in essence the pump is pushing the fuel upwards once the fuel goes through he solenoid and pump combo, so gravity feed it not possible in this scenario if the pump were to fail for some reason am I correct in this assumption, and is this an issue of not? I like the combo plate to be underneath on the frame like your setup, and not be consuming space and exposed to the elements more so if installed right by the tank in the bed by the lower outlet port?
