This monitor is plagued with intermittent black screen issues when using gsync over the display port. The problem was acknowledged by LG and they promised a firmware update to fix it due in November which hasn't been released yet. It has been over 7 months since the release of this monitor and the problem remains unfixed. How did you miss this issue on your review?? LG's handling of this issue is similar to what happened with the Samsung odyssey G9 which you also failed to catch in your review. Please look further into the black screen issue so LG is forced to fix the problem.
I was reading the comments waiting for someone to mention this. I've had this monitor for 7 months and have been having the intermittent black screen issues since I got it. It's extremely annoying, especially because I play a lot of competitive games. It seems to happen at the worst times. I've contacted customer support and they did not acknowledge this was a common problem and gave me a list of things to try. I let them know nothing worked and the only option I had left was to send it back for them to RMA to see what they could do. I don't want to go months without a monitor but I don't want to be stuck with a defective product either. I guess I'm going to have to send it back before my warranty expires if they don't come up with a fix soon. : /
@@redthunder2595 According to the forums all the people who RMA’d the monitor received the new unit with same problem. All units have this issue. They themselves acknowledged the issue and yet 7 months after release theres still no fix …
@@redthunder2595 You don't have a faulty monitor. This is a Firmware issue. Many people don't complain about this because they buy this monitor to play on consoles that use HDMI. I'm glad you're bringing this issue up as I've been so frustrated with it myself. I'm really disappointed in LG and how they have handled this (or in fact not handled at all).
This is the best looking monitor I've ever owned. The colors, brightness, contrast, and sharpness. 4K on a 27" monitor is crispy AF. It makes every game look gorgeous.
so if this monitor has HDR 600 certification, it shouldn't go beyond 600? serious question i think of it as overqualified of that specific certification that it applied to.
I have the 27GN950 with 3840 hours on it. (Not sure if the firmware update reset the counter) I've used the Displayport 1.4(DSC) the entire time. This was always meant for my PC. It's been flawless and impressive. No issues what so ever.
@@surenarclayton7392 But I think It's a good input, there are people who aren't spoiled for choice as you may be, with only the GN version available for them.
The entire video is a GN vs GP comparison remarking on how similar and identical they are. My review only speaks to the longevity of the 27 inch 950 family of products by LG.
Had the GN monitor after 4,800hrs there was a red vertical line on it. I have sent it for repair now under warrenty so hopefully it'll get fixed. The other issues I had when HDR was on the blacks weren't really black just dimmer they just look gray. IPS can only do so much tho OLED would be pure blacks. Overall for gaming & production it's perfect for me. That's why I bought it & had no issues for a year until I woke up one day turned it on & got a vertical line. Looking online seems like a common issue aswell with these panels. I was quite annoyed paying all that money and getting a line on a monitor in 2023.
This is the best monitor I've ever owned. I use an Amazon Basics monitor stand instead of the included LG stand. It cost me $800 at Best Buy. For right now this is still the monitor to get for 4K gaming.
@@GarstikusMaximus just sit back 3 or 4 feet, its not that bad you'll get used to it... I mean 32in are pretty standard now as it is, and actually the aorus oled just came down to $1000 too, that's another good option... it had a display port on it but I think the c1 is slightly better, they're nearly identical though
Had this for over 6 months now. I owned Alienware's AW2521H 360hz before. As someone mentioned in the comments already, I will mention it again: The main weakness of this monitor for me is that it has an absolutely atrocious anti-glare coating!!!!! I think the actual contrast ratio of the panel itself is not bad, the anti-glare coating is way worse compared to my previous monitor. I only went for this because I needed 4k for work - previous one was 1080p and was terrible when using as an external monitor for a Mac for e.g. - but the blacks on the previous one were better simply because of better anti-glare coating - that was an IPS panel as well. This panel also developed a dead pixel after a few months - it might've been there earlier but it took me a while to notice due to higher res compared to 1080p. LG warranty won't cover single dead pixel - it'd have to be like 5 minimum - shame on you LG. Overall, comparing this with what the market had to offer at that time - still one of the best and elegant 4k/high refresh rate monitor you can get.
Its best monitor right now, i hope Samsung will release gaming monitors with same spec. This Qd-Oled panel gives that much of a color vibrance that any user would be satisfied of. Only downside of it would be OLED burning off but i heard you get an protection for that when you buy that certain monitor. The price is too high tho, if that would be with standard g sync compatible/freesync the price would be 400$ less.
If anyone is planning on getting this monitor be aware that there is a terrible defect that LG doesn’t know how to fix. There is a random black screen issue that there is no fix for, the only way to get around it is to shut off freesync. I sent mine in for repair and it took over a month and it came back with the same issue. It was a nice monitor but I returned it because the blacks were basically gray and my panel also had uneven bright spots so there’s a lot of qc issues. I returned it for the Samsung g70a. Got it for 600 and got a perfect panel and the black levels were way better.
It's the overclock to 160hz and gpu vendor gremlins imo. I had the random black screens with my rtx4070ti super, but was fine at 160hz with 7900xtx. Just set to 144hz at 10bit colour and away you go.
So I got this monitor about 6 months ago from LG . I had it for about 3 months before the picture went out. IE. no video whatsoever. Tried to troubleshoot it myself, did research online and found this was a common problem. The threads are not hard to find. Some users said they were able to get resolution from LG, many were not. So, I started my journey. I’ll leave out the details, but after no less then 38 calls to LG, emailing a “corporate” resolutions team and writing a letter, I was approved to send the unit in for repair. A month later I get a cryptic text message saying the unit is not repairable, respond to the text to proceed…14 more calls to LG and they sent me a check for a full refund. Not happy with LG or the monitor. I’m going to wait for a better monitor with 2.1. As said in the review, the HDR is poor….very poor, I always used srgb. Also the backlight glow when the monitor is showing a black or dark image is very, very noticeable. Would not recommend it.
Hard to believe that it will be at that price, I think Cnet got it wrong, gamer are getting gouge everywhere, overpriced gpu's and consoles to unfinished games (2042)...I expect at least 2k!
Pricing on this monitor now is about the same as for the Gigabyte U28, so it's definitely worth it in my opinion over other monitors at 4K 120Hz around this price point. This seems to be the most negative review out there on this monitor. The EVE Spectrum 4K is way more expensive and hard to acquire over here in Europe.
@@jpablox2185 yes ofc, I switched down to 144hz because I use it parallel on a Macbook too. But never had issues when running at 160hz overclocked either, first time I hear about blackscreen issues on this monitor. own it for over a year.
DisplayHDR 600 is, at best, a way of saying that a non-HDR display has good enough built-in tone mapping and native contrast to be able to do a decent job showing HDR content even though you won't be getting the full HDR experience. It's actually a nice feature to have, but marketed in a deceptive way
Even HDR400 has its bonuses as it meets a spec sheet. These reviews saying that HDR600 is worthless though is unfair. You can see a difference, even if it's not "true" HDR the jump from 400 to 600 is worth it when the price is right.
@@madcrowmaxwell I got gn900 for $700 on prime day. I feel Hdr 600 helps in improving the contrast a bit and get that punchy ness, I had owned a laptop with oled screen, nothing can come close to that but still it is better than having nothing or HDR 400 which is truely a "meh" hdr. Maybe in next 4-5 years OLED would be mainstream or maybe QD-OLED would be mainstream. Until then I'll have this monitor for long time to come (touch wood).
Using GSYNC with DSC with this monitor causes black screen issues. Other than that this monitor is excellent. A workaround is to use DP 1.4 without the DSC, but the downside is that you lose 10 bit color at 95+ refresh rate. Or trying out various cables might help.
A gaming monitor with local dimming, 1000 nits peak brightness in HDR, high refresh rate and accurate colours and isn't outrageously priced. That would be the dream. I'm waiting for the LG C2 42 inch personally
Are u getting any issues with black screen flickering when you overclock it to 160 hz ? Cuz mine does and i had to settle for 144hz without overclocking it .
In ocuk thread on this monitor over 50% of people out of 78 responders in the poll has black screen issues. Yeah, LG said 144hz support over hdmi 2.1 is coming in firmware update slated for release at end of Nov, it's been almost an entire quarter later with no update. I asked support for status and surprise surprise, no info. Also the RGB light show at the back whenever I turn the monitor on is really unnecessary.
The best 4K monitor in my eyes is the PG27UQ. I cannot wait to replace mine with the X32 Acer Predator coming Q3 2022. 32”, 4K, 1200 nits, 576 mini led zones, Quantum Dot, G sync ultimate, 165Hz and is using a new AM Led panel tech. 😍
Yeah, if you really want to stick in the PC monitors. I couldn't just wait and wait, so I've been happy with LG's C1 TV in the end. Also Gsync module only gives headaches these days, so I would perfer freesync over nvidia's stuff these days. On top of that the IPS blurring really kills my brain. I'm hoping I don't have to rely on TV's in near future to really have OK monitors again though. The dark ages of years 2005-2010 were bad enough in monitor space (in short it was the end of CRT's, and LCD's weren't on par on that period). When we got to 1440p 144Hz screens in 2017, I feel the tech improvements has been really stagnated in monitor space.
@@LexLutha Fair enough, but I can't stand the anticoating that ruins overall image quality on PC monitors, and since I do have my own mancave, the brightness is not an issue. Actually for that luminance even OLED's HDR is a bit too bright for me, but it's rarely an issue on movies which show a lot of dark scenery.
I love my 27GN950 , I couldn't find the GP version but im not worry about it , its just a 27 screen , i have a 55lg tv oled with 2.1 hdmi which imo is a better way to enjoy console gaming and you will get true HDR, if you are a pc gamer-editor the gn version is dope .
I have the older version of this monitor (GN950) and I absolutely love it. I’ve had it for over a year. The update raised the refresh rate to 160Hz, and it’s just been so good to use! I actually really like the gimmicky LED lights as well. You can sync it to the video and it’s so cool when you play cinematic games with it!
ive got the older version to, only issue i have with the LED's is when you plug it in after cable management and you get blinded by how bright they are lol.
got the GN version and its spot on no faults from me, you say the HDR isn't good, but I feel it is good if you haven't experienced HDR 1000 then this is perfect! Rarely use HDR because of game and recording issues. but if you don't use clips and want immersive colours use HDR, if you want competitive gaming then turn it off.
Could literally get an OLED for $100 more… These monitors are insane. Crap HDR performance also. Either go 1080p or 1440p high refresh rate, or OLED. Anything else is not worth the money. Also, I wish the B-Roll included more close-ups of the monitors. I feel like the B-Roll for every monitor just makes it look really good, instead of capturing the faults you’re discussing. It’s a bit of a disconnect
Even for 10000000000$ more you will not get a 160Hz 27-inch OLED monitor because such does not exist. LG 27EP950 is a 27-inch OLED but it is 60Hz only and costs $3000. And please don't ask people to put a TV on your desktop.
I have had it for two months. Only thing that bothers me is flat panel. Got it for 369€. Very solid monitor for that price. But would be cool to hear what Hardware Unboxed thinks of it.
These companies really need to lower their prices, It's ridiculous, Just because they add HDMI 2.1 to their displays doesn't make it ok to charge over $800, Especially at 27 inches.
I have an LG 27GN950, as per your recommendation some time back - I like it a lot. My PS4 is connected thru HDMI, and the PS4 frame rates are acceptable for me. PC games look great on either 2K or 4K and 600HDR is better than nothing on either PC or PS4. I am waiting for the QOLED monitors to become available. Lets see how much they cost when they arrive! The LG OLED TVs are great but their smallest OLED TV is just too big for a monitor. I'll be looking forward to your reviews when the QOLED monitors hit out shores.
Same. I want a something with true HDR or OLED but the simple truth is they are all way too big for my use case. As a TV, sure, but on my desk? Not a chance.
Why is is so hard to find a HDMI 2.1 Native 4K monitor with true HDR10+? The Series X has been out a long time now. You would of thought one company would of build a monitor to those standard specs.
The 1ms repsonse rate marketing is a vicious cycle of bullshit, enough people buying them are stupid enough to fall for it and literally wouldn't buy the model if the real response rate was revealed on the box, and manufacturers themselves are more than happy to slap 1ms on every model themselves and toss it out. HDR certifications also gotta stop, if it's IPS, not mini-LED and doesn't have FALD, the HDR is gonna be shit.
@@ChibiTheEdgehog idk man, I personally know a few who definitely know way more about PCs in general than the average user, and still fall for the 1ms bs, and even fewer people know the difference between response time and input lag
Fantastic review, and THANK YOU for including that new HUB Essentials Checklist table, and, incorporating 'advertised vs real' tickboxes - so very helpful, and puts the best spotlight possible on how honest a company's marketing is. I do wonder if these big companies are working together to not release 'the ultimate' monitor that does tick all the boxes e.g. 'proper' HDR, latest connectivity etc specs. This is in stark contrast to new motherboards (for new CPU's), where you'll be able to purchase a board incorporating almost all the latest gizmos - available at that time(!!!) - on CPU release. Today, there are monitor features available - why don't companies incorporate them all as a purchase option...???
I own this monitor and is has major displayport deep sleep issues where I have to keep unplugging and replugging it daily for it to work, otherwise it shows no signal. It has not received a firmware update like the 27gn950 which allowed that monitor to have the option to disable deep sleep.
@@MardukTheSunGodInsideMe there's no firmware update for 27gp950 yet. I've checked onscreen control and plugged it in, ran the update, it says current firmware up to date. @@laillar1 nothing significant. It takes a bit to go to sleep once the computer does but other than that it's fine. The one thing I recommend is a good HDMI 2.1 or display port 1.4 cable. The bad ones were causing most of my issues . Things like display cutouts and such. So many cables lie or are untested on Amazon about their actual specs and data speeds. A limitation I discovered on this monitor is that when the 160 Hz “overclock” mode is enabled, integer scaling cannot be used on an NVIDIA GPU. I don’t have an AMD GPU to see if this is the case for those chipsets.
I returned to this monitor after trying the PG27AQN if you can believe it!? I felt that the 160hz was more than enough and I actually played better at that refresh. The motion superiority is nice on the latest crop of esports monitors, but utterly overrated...coming from a CS player with 6k hours. Also agree with the other owner who talks about amazing looks. This thing is also about twice as heavy as the PG27AQN...and it really tells in the build quality. High PPI and middle of the road refresh(144-180hz) ftw.
I have 2 of these, and their motion handling is not as good as it could be at 160hz. Still waiting for some OLED 4K High refresh rate panels here in the mean time..
You can’t buy it. It’s about as rare as a 3090 at close to MSRP. I ordered an Eve Spectrum almost six months ago and have been looking at this as a backup in case the Eve falls through and I have NEVER been able to find one. You can only possibly get one through LG in the US or maybe BestBuy, but the notifications never come.

I had the gigabyte m28u following your recommendations and sent it back as it was way to dark. This monitor performs and looks great and I got it much cheaper as it was sold as an open box. Pitfalls, you got to mess with the settings all the time for every game you play or work. This a pain and a must do . My over all opinion 4k at 27 inch pointless stick 1440p. 32 inch to big for a desk too small for consoles. Last rant why compare against 43 inch oleds...silly
This is an issue with all reviewers. They only see one panel and don't find common issues, add to that they see so many panels and you get things that are just unfair. No, HDR600 isn't an OLED 43inch equal... but nobody looking at this monitor is going to spend twice the price on something double the size. There's just no fair comparison.

Great review. I have the Eve spectrum and it seems to use the same panel but has some better features. truth to be told I did not even wanted to buy the Spectrum but I wanted to get this one, but I could not find this monitor anywhere, at list not for reasonable price. LG has to improve their supply chain and their pricing. for 800 USD I can see it as somewhat reasonable price, 900$ - not so much. Any way my next monitor whenever I replace this one will have to have better HDR performance - I don't care for higher resolution or higher refresh rate but HDR capabilities are lacking (softly speaking).
@hardware unboxed, i purchased this monitor for 4k gaming and content creation. After watching you think it is this is not a good idea due to its miss leading 1 ms grey to grey response times and the failure to dim light zones, however if i was to get it you think it is a waste or should not buy it at all?
My hope is we see a big jump in quality for 32" 4k monitors this year. I don't think I could go back to anything smaller. Thanks for keeping the monitor reviews coming!
I prefer 27" size monitors and I personally prefer more 4K 27" monitors in the future. The pixel density is crisp and it's a comfortable size for desktop usage.
Mmm, looks like £800 in the uk, £50 more than I payed for the GN950 version back when it was new. To be honest £750 was already at the edge of what I'd be happy paying for a monitor like this and only really took it because I didn't have a monitor and It was just about the only high refresh 4k monitor around (without subsampling or multi-cable faff.) Some of the decent alternatives available now are about £100 cheaper... So I'd probably go with them over this now. LG need to get their prices down or improve that hdr.

Seems like everyone in the comments has their own issue with this monitor. But it is the monitor I am using right now and the fan that is inside of it is garbage. The default fan speed sounds like a high pitch cricket that never ends and it drives me up the wall. You can turn it on in a service mode but the color settings don't seem exactly the same to me and any power cycle or even sleep cycle of the monitor will reset any changes you make in the service mode, but you can alter the fan speed there. This is how I know the fan is the problem. The LG software gives no way to control the fan speed via software (which it seems like they could totally do and it does require a USB connection, you can control the lights via software this way for example). LG also provides no information on how to open the monitor up or what type of fan is used as I would happily just replace the damn thing myself if I had the proper information going into it. I find the picture to be top tier, but the fan kills the experience enough for me that I am contemplating buying something different.
I found the height adjustment on the 27GN950 a little bit limited, I would have preferred it to go a bit lower. My previous LG monitor ( I think it was a 27UD68) could be adjusted much lower.

Do you use HDR on or off?

Worth it for $300 off? Or should i wait
Hopefully you can review the Alienware AW3423DW later, QD oled, 175hz, 3440x1440, gsync ultimate and $1299

Hol up. Is that price official now?

@@darkmaster539 Indeed. A well-designed tone mapping system (like what you'd find in a good DisplayHDR400 or 600 monitor) is a nice feature to have.
@@madcrowmaxwell I got gn900 for $700 on prime day. Using GSYNC with DSC with this monitor causes black screen issues. Other than that this monitor is excellent.

Why is is so hard to find a HDMI 2.1 Native 4K monitor with true HDR10+? The Series X has been out a long time now. You would of thought one company would of build a monitor to those standard specs.
What did you buy
The 1ms repsonse rate marketing is a vicious cycle of bullshit, enough people buying them are stupid enough to fall for it and literally wouldn't buy the model if the real response rate was revealed on the box, and manufacturers themselves are more than happy to slap 1ms on every model themselves and toss it out. HDR certifications also gotta stop, if it's IPS, not mini-LED and doesn't have FALD, the HDR is gonna be shit.
I think the number of people who actually believe the 1ms marketing might be lower than you think 🤔

Unfortunately, it's barely possible to buy in my area. I was hunting for 850 and then 950 for a year, and then gave up and brought Asus.. and in general Asus is not too bad, but it's expensive and has an annoying issue with wake up, and company support answer: they are not going to fix it.
What is the best PC gaming monitor for up to ~1500€?
Use case:
Should have: 16:9, 4K Gaming, 120Hz, good HDR, good contrast, 1x HDMI 2.1, 1x DP
Could have: Good color accuracy (RGB/sRGB ~95-100%
Still waiting for a legendary 24" 1440p 144hz refresh with a ULMB type of mode that allows 60FPS (fighting games are locked at 60) no speakers or microphone plugs (to reduce the cost) the only extra thing that would be ok would be USB ports since those are always handy to have.
Just noticed that this is a revision, mine is the GN, not the GP.
What about the MSI MAG281URF? 4K, 144hz.
so that means overall the sepctrum eve is actually better or atleast equal and the g7 samsung 4k version is better at response time
Do you prefers this monitor or the Samsung odyssey g70A 28’
I found the height adjustment on the 27GN950 a little bit limited, I would have preferred it to go a bit lower. My previous LG monitor ( I think it was a 27UD68) could be adjusted much lower.
How's the hardware calibration through LG's Calibration Studio? Broken like the GN950 or now working?
If I don't need HDMI 2.1, and I do photo work, should I go for the GN950 or GP950? The GN950 is available for 500 bucks now. GP950 is 700 bucks.
Gigabyte M28U or LG 27GP950, please help me to decide which monitor should i buy for my PS5. Thanks.
How do you change the refresh rate on this thing? The menu is so clunky and i can't get it to change. It shows it at 60hz by default?
PSA: so, I got the 27gp850. The thing Noone seems to rank about is BURN IN. I walked away from my monitor for 2mins to go grab a drink and came back to a Halo Infinite main menu burned into the monitor then again same situation but this time a Forza Horizon 5 menu. Figured I'd share, since Noone ever mentions it.
Burn in on an IPS?
Return it. Yours is defective
Idk much about computers but what’s the point of overclocking your gpu? It says it can cause crashes and reboots
so can i ask which you prefer? should I get the Gigabyte m28u or wait for the samsung g70a to be available here?
Ending up getting an M32U because LG 4k 144hz monitors are out of stock where I am. Even the old model is not available.
Sir i would like to ask you a question what screen in your truly opinion is the best right now range 500-1000$ with a Geforce 1080Ti for fps gaming 27'' + 144hz +
I recommend a new GPU for monitors like this
Is the lg 27gp950-B the same monitor just with static stand?
i bought the m32u, m28u, and the odyssey g7 any link to a guide on the settings Tim uses on the monitors??
Hello I know the odds of u replying are pretty low specially for a 2 year old vid but I’m about to buy this monitor, what would u recommend to play fps games @120hz on my ps5 fast or normal ?
I see fast mode has better average response times but I’m not sure if having worst average total response holds it back I’d love some help haha
My monitor. Got it for 330 euros. Pretty good for the price.
how? you sure that it isn't the previous version ?
@@kingplunger1 Yeah got it cheap because of my work(Backend Software engineer). I got my 3090 for 1000 and my workstation pc 6000€ less than msrp.
What's the point of driving the monitor with a 160Hz video signal with a response time of 8ms? 1000ms/8ms = 125Hz, so in practice, this screen is good for only 120Hz.
Is this better than the Eve Spectrum 4k 144Hz? How do the two compare?
Hi , can you help me choose between [Samsung G7 Ls28AG70] and LG 27GP950-B, which one is better for console gaming, specially Ps5, any input appreciate it.
Why buy this for $900 over the Gigabyte M28U for $650? Another plus to the M28U not mentioned in this review is the KVM - super handy for users who have a laptop and a desktop.
I wont be buying an LG monitor or tv again. Always product breaking issues. Or bad QoL issues, like the software being unable to keep tv settings between apps.
Can you please add legends to your graphs? As a newcomer to monitors, it's hard for me to know if the yellow or gray line is the benchmark or the actual monitor's performance.
Did you try out the hardware calibration on this monitor?
plz help how is g70a 28inch 144hz for adobe creative cloud all apps?
hello a question, why when I activate FASTER RESPONSE TIMES do I have the ghosting effect? thank you.
(With FAST no have Effect ghosting) .
oh?
btw in your review of Omen x 27 you said the response time is 3.13, in this video you say respons time is 4.08 so what is it actually?
