  • This is my overview of how to replace a starter from a 2012 2.4L Hyundai Sonata, but I'm sure the procedure is the same for all 2.4 sonatas.
    Hope it helps!!

This video seems to be the only good one I could find walking you through how to remove the starter from the top. My car was on a hill and I couldn't jack it up so this video 100% saved me, thank you!

Thanks for the video. I replaced my starter this week and paid just $92 for the part. The last time I took it somewhere to get it replaced, they charged me $675. If anyone removed all the bolts mentioned and the manifold still wouldn’t budge, it’s because there are two additional bolts- one on the left side and one on the right side of the manifold which are not mentioned here that you will need to remove. One of mine was way too tight, literally the very last bolt I had to remove in this entire process. I ended up stripping that and it took me about four hours to finally get it out in that very tight space. Once I had the starter in it was very quick to put everything back together. Thanks again, you saved me a fortune.

Just did this exact method to replace the starter on my 2011 sonata. Really appreciate the video, helped me get it done right around 2 hours, maybe a little less. Seemed a lot more daunting watching, but once I was out there I got it knocked out. Anyone wondering if you need to pay a mechanic or do this yourself, definitely recommend doing this yourself. Saved me $300

Thanks for doing this video! Used this approach and another video to replace the starter lever in a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The part itself cost about $8 plus shipping and you helped me and my family save A LOT of money when we didn't have extra to be spending! I'm a novice mechanic, if I could use that term, but your advice was easy to follow and I'm back up and running.

Absolutely lovely video. I was having to replace a 3rd starter ( finally just spent the few extra bucks for the OEM part, won't do that again) and did it from the bottom the last times. This is a million times easier to do and really isn't all that much extra prep. Saved me tons of time actually getting to the starter (and being able to see what the hell I was doing was so freaking nice).

Thanks so much for the great video. The process was virtually the same for my 2009 Rondo that has the same Theta II engine. A couple of pointers on the Rondo in case anyone else happens across this: The fuel rail is attached to the manifold on mine, so I had to detach the fuel line (two nuts) with a 10mm deep well socket. I also had to loosen the two 12mm bolts holding the lower bracket to the engine block in order to reattach the manifold. Letting the bracket sag 1/8" or so made all the difference. Thanks again!

A different approach was to work from under the car to replace the starter which requires jacking up the car in my garage, using jack stands and laying on my back. Not an enjoyable way to work on my Sonata. Love this replacement from above concept. Looks like a bit more work but I've removed all the air intake components before so got that down. Not a big deal at all. Also did a throttle body cleaning before too so that's an easy removal too. Guess I see how easy it is to remove the intake manifold but doesn't look too scary. Great detailed video. Thanks.

If anyone else is doing this make sure when you're putting the intake back on, to put the bolts on the underside in first. I had the top ones in and couldn't line up the holes with the bracket on the underside so had to take all bolts out and start again from the bottom. Also be careful with disconnecting the wiring harness for the starter! Cracked it and had to connect it raw dog without the connector. I just electrical taped it snug into place and it was good.

Awesome video. This is the only way to get to the starter. Accessing the starter from underneath, like a lot of the other videos suggest, doesn't look fun even if you have a lift. I had all the room in the world. I also replaced the intake manifold and throttle body gaskets while I was in there. Thanks for your help Falcon.

2017 Hyundai Sonata SE intermittent hard starts. Car sounded like low battery but all the lights and radio was on no dimming. I would for about a month go to start the car and something like 4 times it wouldn't start, it would half turn over the starter then after 5 or 6 tries it would turn over enough to start the car. I did early on check the voltage of the battery but not the Amps and over all health of the battery.
Okay 2 weeks later after replacing the starter i experienced the same thing it wouldn't start exactly like before. This probably needs to be in all CAPS!!!! CHECK YOUR BATTERY!!!! I bought a battery and it starts up fine now. Hopefully that is all my issues but now might be a good time to trade it in.
My old starter died no discerning noise dead dead luckily it was in my garage and not where I was having issues starting it (61st and Lewis a mile away from a rough part of Tulsa, lookup 61st and Peoria they film whole seasons of First 48 around there). I had covid and the flu three weeks ago and stopped off at the cvs to get rapid tests and that cvs was the only one that had them. It died in the garage and I felt too much like crap to care.
I checked my battery with an ohms meter and volt wise it was fine. CCA cold cranking amps if your battery is old or damaged it may not have that umph to turn the starter fast enough. If it's damaged and/or old the current it sends to the starter can weld the parts of the starter and can destroy your starter.
I did have to replace my starter because it was toast but, if you're looking this video up and in a situation like mine get your battery tested first it could just be a aging battery that needs to be replaced.

It was probably a bolt to the transmission. I saw this comment the other day and did my starter this afternoon I was looking for a bolt close to the top starter bolt. It looked like it was the transmission bellhousing and was a silver bolt? The 2 starter bolts on mine where black.

So there are two nuts that you can see up top, a bolt on each side of the manifold, the center bolt, and the two bolts hiding below. on the top of the bracket. Don't forget to change out your intake manifold gaskets (there are 4) and the throttle body gasket.

    • @dool1002
      @dool1002 4 месяца назад +1

That's odd. Starter motor is only used once in the process of starting up the engine (it was invented to replace the hand cranking method to start the engine) and thus would never ever be used again once the engine is running. When you turn the key in the ignition switch it sends 12V to the starter motor to assist in turning the flywheel then when the engine fires up turn the flywheel faster than the starter motor, the starter motor deactivates. No shifting of gears was ever involved.
