Hey Brian! As a recovering mechanic/technician who's worked on trucks, equipment, cars, motorcycles and boats I just wanted to give you a shoutout for an excellent video and also saving me from just going out and getting a replacement starter. I had a good idea what the issue was but had no idea Hyundai used a plastic fork in the starter. Not surprised as I've already had Hyundai replace the plastic internal P/S coupler under their extended warranty. Oh and as it's not my vehicle Sis thanks you too! Excellent job , I had a 2013 and starter went out,,, parked in the middle of a mud hole , pulled the air filter housing and plumbing , throttle body, I did not remove the intake, had the old starter out and a new one installed In under 1 hour !! It can be done without going under and without pulling the intake!!
man i wish you could do a vid of that. it would be nice to see someone do it without taking out the intake, i have a 2013 as well and it seems i just cant see the starter without removing intake
The key step is to remove the bolt holding the dual oil line bracket. This gives you the room to work the starter past the hoses. There's a 4 bolt bracket that others had removed by mine must have been a little different because mine was not in the way.

Thank you very much for your video! My son's 2012 Hyundai Sonata had the same issue. He had it towed to the dealership (before seeing you video) & they wanted to charge him $650!!! We bought the part for $7 & change. I followed your video, pulled out the starter, replaced the plastic starter switch & reinstalled the starter. Worked like a charm!! The only tool I didn't have was the car lift.. My back wished that I had one!! Thanks again for your detailed video!

Thanks so much for this video. I did the job today. Now I do not have a lift, but I put the car on jack stands and got it done. The part cost me $8.60 with tax. Took me 5 hours but I only have hand tools. Got it done, works like a charm. I must say that it is a pretty stupid design to make that out of plastic instead of a lightweight metal that would last a lifetime.
We did find that removing the plastic air intake stuff and the battery box made getting to the starter bolts very easy from the top. Those parts came off very easily and quickly.
So you didn't have to remove the intake manifold and throttle body? Asking because I too have to remove from the top and everyone is saying I'll have to remove intake manifold and throttle body but if all I have to remove is battery tray and air box then it'll be a lot easier.
@@IronHide3910 took me 2 hrs but im mechanically savvy and have a wobble socket 14mm to make the rear starter bolt much easier, no need to remove anything but the battery Wires**( I do both for peace of mind), go from the bottom. remove both splash guards 10mm, the 2 starter bolts14mm, electrical connector and power nut 13mm. Starter pops right out. NO need to take anything off or even jack the car up if your smaller in stature like me. For the actual "fix" theres 2, t20 star bit csrews and 2, 7mm bolts to disassemble the starter. Id mark it to be safe but hold it like Brian did in the video. Then pop off the damaged fork, pop the new one on, grease helps at the forks edge. Reassemble in reverse order. Make the starter bolts "guut 'N Tight"
I am having this same sound, same issue on my 2009 Sonata 2.4L 4 cylinders. From a few Facebook posts I searched, some saying it is about same location for starter on my model. I don't have a lift either, just hand tools. Probably I will get a floor jack and jack stand this weekend Black Friday.

This video saved me $800 (dealership starter replacement) or at least $400 (cost of parts) plus I can repair this faster than I could order the part or have the dealership do it.
Plus the craziest part... the guy who makes these lives in the next town over from me!! I almost called his number to thank him myself but I didnt want to be annoying. So I liked and subscribed instead.
The starter took me 1hr to remove, 5min to get the broken plastic fork, and It will take me another 5min to replace it and probably another hour to install it.

Just really wanna say thank you for this very educational in depth video because my wife is highly upset that her car has this issue. It’s no telling how much we would have come outta pocket with a shop but it people like you the hold America’s integrity so thanks again God bless you. :)
Key to any car repair, is good tools and the right tools. I have learned that the hard way. I would get so frustrated working on my cars with the wrong tools. And have components removed quickly in seconds with the correct power tools lol

Your’re a gentleman and a scholar! I have my 2012 Sonata on jack stands and have all the brackets loosened up. A little tougher doing things upside down! Now just need to get to the starter bolts. Looking forward to the simple rebuild. Many thanks for your excellent help!
Thank you. We just followed your directions and replced the lever and now the car works. The part was $12.60 and they had it in stock at the dealer. Your advice was spot on. We did remove manifold and take it out from the top.
Just did this fix 2 days ago on my fiance's 2012 Sonata. It works took a couple hrs to do. Part cost $12 saved me hundreds versus buying the entire starter. Thanks brianmobile1

I just did the $8 plastic fork replacement OEM part. I went in from the top and it was easy. I noticed the new OEM part did not have hollow channels in it like the original fork. Afterwards I JB Welded the original broken fork back together. When it broke the seams fit perfectly against each other. Anyhow I added a small of of JB in the seam of the broke section, filled in the hollow channels and then add some around the area of where it was broken on the outside and carefully let is set overnight. I now cannot break the part in half with my hands. As hard as I can to twist and torque it, it will not break. So I'll throw it in the glove box for a back road break down if I need it. :). What a bad design. And they sold hundreds of thousands of cars for 5/6 years with this part in it.
Execellent video and easy to follow, good dispersant of humor. Good oops coverage on disassembly and how to put the brushes back in. Probably the BEST I’ve seen so far. My daughter and I made this our project to fix her car and had some good bonding time.
thanks to this video I was able to get the job done knowing what was wrong and a mechanic could not charge me for a new starter knowing all they had to do is replace the starter lever. This may be an Old video but it came in handy now.

Dude, you are incredible! Awesome tutorial and delivery. Was considering buying a used Hyundai Sonata, now reconsidering after watching this because I know the "plastic fork" is one of many issues with this vehicle. Last starter I worked on was an '02 Camry 4-cyl. Removed from top in abt 20 mins, replaced end cap with new one (brushes). $15 part that Toyota parts mgr didn't even know existed til I had him order it. Saved $400 cuz dealer just replaces whole starter. Total time maybe 2 hrs.

in the old days we used to use thread to hold brushes in holder to reassemble. a few spins of the rotor cut the thread releasing brushes.

I ended up removing the radiator fan and air box to access the bolts and remove the starter from the top since it was too hard from the bottom with jack stands.
Thanks for this video!!! I had ordered the starter from Amazon and then I saw this video and said well if I already have the starter, might as well try to fix it. Went to Hyundai and bought the piece for $10.24 and it was as easy as you said it was going to be. THANKS AGAIN BRIAN!! the only thing I did differently was I forgot to remove the bracket behind the starter (3:14) and even though it was a little hard getting it out, it was possible.

Thank you!! Saved me $575, to have my mechanic change my starter. I have the square frame on the bottom, so I had to remove the throttle body also. As a note, I drew a smiley face on my starter too.

Ha ha! That's funny. One of the reasons I'm doing this flying stuff is dreams I had of it as a kid. There was no motor and no wing, but I could fly while being upright and holding my hands above my shoulders.

THANK YOU for this video it saved me 260.00 on just the cost of a starter - one note called a dealership for the part and they did not know what I was talking about (their system shows only the whole starter). Called another one and they had the part in stock since they were use to dealing with it.

When my 2012 Elantra developed a starter issue, I viewed multiple RUclips videos to get the needed info, and decided to buy a new Milwaukee cordless socket wrench before I started the work. It was so useful in doing this work. I wish I had one many years ago.

I have the same problem with my 2011 santa fe. Went to pull a part. They didn't have one for it, but they said the 2008 to 2013 sonatas were interchangeable, so I managed to get one off a 2009 sonata. Cost me $31, as opposed to the $275 auto zone, $285 advance auto, or $500 Firestone. Haven't swapped them yet, so don't know if it works. I am ordering the fork from hyundai. I did notice that the one I took off the sonata, doesn't slide back and forth if you tip it, so hopefully it's good. Thanks for the video, really needed the help.
Maybe you could beef up the new fork with a little strip of fiberglass cloth and 5 min epoxy on the front and back. I would because that starter is a PITA to get to. Thanks for making your channel. You make the world a better place.
talon0863 thankfully Hyundai changed the fork to be solid necked instead of channeled like the faulty stock fork

great job on the video. was able to have it all done and started in an hour after watching this, on jack stands.
Mine was a 2013. Same issue but I did not have the luxury of having a dealer who stocked the fork. So I ended up with a rebuilt from AutoZone... lifetime guarantee. I've watched several videos on this started removal and some seem to have more room that others. Not sure if that's because of additional upgrades when the car was made but I had a hell of a time getting it back in. I finally found that the key was to have the solenoid on the very top of the starter when lining up but I had to drop the starter way back into a little open area so that the nose would clear. It won't go in nose first unless it way up in the cavity. It was a real knuckle buster too. Wear nitrile gloves!

Thanks a lot! even though i couldn't get lever here in Canada, all they offer is a 300CADs starter, i called quebec, ontario, alberta... all the same! still, your video saved me a lot of money, because i was lead to the right direction, to sum up, i ended up with a rebuild starter with 3 month warranty i changed it myself, cheers from Canada!

lots of good info. You hit the problem with my 2013 Sonata right on the money.
The repairs to the starter went easily, especially since you gave the heads up
with how to separate the starter housing without disturbing the motor brushes.
Personally I found it advantages to remove the airbox and associated plumbing
to get at the upper starter bolt. But all said well done and thanks.

I had to do one similar but the problem was a stripped out ring gear. Someone had overheated it as far I could tell. A rebuilt had the same problem from local part house passing all the tests on paper. OEM parts for rebuilds are still available. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Brian for this great video. Now I know what the problem is and able to get the right fix for the right price. I would do it if I had the space and the tools but do not, so have to pay the experts. If they do the job like you, it will be money well spent.
Giving this a try today. Hopefully I can do it. A $15 part is a lot better than a couple hundred bucks at a shop. Wish me luck.
I don't know if this helps or not, but the part number you need is a 36131 2G 100FFF. It cost $15 at the dealership here in Arizona.
Got the starter off without having to loosen the oil line bracket. I also took the battery off for easier access to the top bolt. Got the car jacked, starter removed and lever replaced last night. Doing the install tonight.
Did the install and it worked great. Thanks for the video. Saved me a few hundred bucks.

Did you have to go from the bottom too? Spoke with a Hyundai tech and he said if you remove intake and fan you can do it all from the hood. Do you think that's true?
PS your part was more expensive but the work "couple hundred" is a steal. Here in LA it would have cost 600 total with parts. Honestly mechanic would have probably just replaced lever and charged full price for part.

I wish I found this video while searching. I saw the fork part being sold separately so I thought that might be the problem. I have a new 2 year warranty starter arriving today but it only cost me $45 with tax and free shipping on ebay. I will get a fork and fix the original to have a backup. I think I will also put JB weld on the new fork to strengthen it. Thanks!

I've really enjoyed it so far. I miss the power of my MAC pneumatic (that costs about the same), but I SO don't miss dragging a dirty air hose all over the shop floor or hitting my head on a coupler hanging from the ceiling.

Great video. The only things I would do different is anti-size all the nuts and bolts before putting them back on. Learned long ago I might have to work on the same stuff again in the future and it makes it easier to put stuff back together.
While you are in there don't forget to put a dab of CV joint grease on those bushes on the motor shaft rear. Makes the starter a lot quieter. As well a tiny amount on the spiral gear to slow down the wear.
Reason for the nut being a 13mm is the thread on the stud is ISO metric M8, so the correct nut there is 13mm.
All that plastic, so absolutely no way to repair after any minor accident, and designed to fail after a few years of heating, though great if you are in a salted road area, but not anywhere else. You can see all the corroded alloy on the block in any case. Do you have to remove covers to drain the oil? Seems you need to to change the filter, unless you use the special tool to grab it.
4 years later, this video is still saving people money. I pulled my starter apart yesterday and found the same broken lever... fork... whatever. Headed to the dealer this morning to pickup the replacement. I found the technical service bulletin that addresses this known issue: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2013/SB-10059644-2273.pdf

I am an airplane lover (unless it's a passenger jet)(especially going thru TSA bs...) my dad was member of Historic Aircraft Group (HAG) and we frequently hung at Geneseo airport (the greatest show on turf..) he helped restore their C-47 named W-7, and got a ride!! He was also involved in resto of the Memphis Belle, the gang gave me several spark plug rings at his calling hours, and is buried with one on his finger...☹️😉sad but so cool!! I have been involved in RC aircraft from planes (I like 3/D ones dad used to call them flying suppositorys🤣😁) to helicopters and gas powered RC racing boats!! So cool to see your video! Oh right sidetracked again... I remember changing the bendix on the old hot rods I used to drive(before house and kids🙄) and thought it sounded like a bendix issue on wife's Sonata.. sure beats spending 100+$ on a starter!! Thanks man!!
Hey B, great vid! I enjoy all your stuff. Suggestion: how about an alternator surgery vid? Open up an alternator and repair/replace brushes, diodes, etc. Then maybe reclock the case to mount differently. Could be interesting.

The summer my father died the starter on our car also died. Now the man of the family, I remember pulling the starter and repairing it. I was ten.
I bet you've learned a lot of stuff like that you might have missed out on. My dad was a mechanic, but he was gone 3 weeks a month. So I was the same way. I had to handle about everything like that.

I don't trust Feit electric stuff. Had one of their CFL (60 watt replacement bulbs) start smoking on us in the house. Plastic housing started to burn. Good thing we were home! Great video as always, Brian. Thank you.

You're welcome. It's preference. Some like to pause for text in favor of a shorter video upload data deal (phone plan). Others just don't like the text at all as if it were a fly on the screen. I'm a pause guy, but if people like longer time delta (seeing triangle from physics classes) that's fine by me. I don't mind.
