Due to this being the most requested song by our patrons, here is our version of J.R.R. Tolkien's poem, "Fall of Gil-galad!" We worked very hard on this and hope you enjoy it:)
A note on our interpretation:
The first verse is meant to set the tone of the piece as a lament, with a single narrating voice, as though anyone could mourn the loss of such a champion: whether elf, or man, or hobbit (for Sam sung this lament in the Fellowship of the Ring).
The second verse is meant to recall the glory of Gil galad, for Tolkein describes him as a warrior worthy of heaven. This verse falls off into a void as the elves have their final say before an evil power takes the final verse.
In the third verse, we took a different angle on the interpretation, and rather than having the good peoples lament, it is as if the voice of Mordor itself seizes the song and sings the rest in sadistic satisfaction of having claimed this hero. This interpretation seemed to give the most powerful punch to the most iconic line of this poem "In Mordor where the shadows are..."
That being said, we don't want to leave people with doom and gloom, so remember, no matter what evil seems to prevail, good always triumphs in the end!

@@rorschach6295 there was no body to take home, sauron's hand burned him to a crisp. His spirit must dwell in Mandos' hall untill at last maybe he will recover. But considering it was Sauron himself who killed him in such a cruel way, that may as well be so long into the future that it approximates true death.
@jingjong3684 he may have joined Míriel of old, an Elf so hurt in spirit and mind that they must rest forever in the Halls of Mandos, returning only at the end of the world.
When I first heard this song I associated Gil-Galad with a generic ruler... then I read the Silmarillon, and Gil-Galad became the wisest and most venerable, one of the greatest defenders of middle earth. This song now puts a deep sadness...

I like to think its the host of the Ñoldor in their shining armor that are reflected in their King's shield.
Tolkien truly was a linguistic genius.
Even more when you remember the light of stars are literally divine in their world. So you could say he held a holy shield, but it availed little against the mallace of Sauron

@@someinternetguy1065 Morgoth was already defeated long ago when Gil-galad fell by the hands of Sauron, if I'm not wrong. The verses are about his fight against Sauron.
@@someinternetguy1065 "And where he dwelleth none can say" isn't literal. It is known he died, along with Elendil, personally fighting Sauron (Isildur cut the Ring off afterwards). Elrond, Cirdan and Isildur were all witnesses to this. And the Elves are also aware of what happens to them after death. He is currently alive, in Aman, with a new body. Same thing happens to every elf who dies, unless they committed unusually unforgivable actions, in which case their souls sit in the Halls of Mandos, but never receive a new body (Feanor, and his sons, other the sole-survivor, Maglor, being the obvious examples of such Elves).
I thought there was legend about a lone light that roams that crags on Orodruin, his star is soul, if always associated the two
@@suchiuomizu wait, I thought it wasn't that common for elves to reincarnate. Aren't they supposed to stay in Mandos until the end of times and the creation of the second world? Because there are very few explicit examples of Elves who reincarnated.

The Last Alliance is heartbreaking. It’s the final battle of the World That Might’ve Been. Where Men, Elves, and Dwarves and all the free folk might’ve stood together.
A world of magic. A world of wonder.
Then the great kings of Men and Elves died. Then Isildur’s grief made him weak to the One Ring.
And the last echoes of the Hurin’s People, of Gondolin, of Beleriand faded away. Sauron might be overthrown but the world left behind would diminish.
Small nitpick, there were still many great kings of Men, the Kings of Arnor and Gondor, for many, many centuries after the War of the Last Alliance, and they were partly of the race of Hurin. Then the times of the Kings ended for a while until Aragorn.
Húrin’s race died long ago. Neither Túrin nor Nienna had any children. Not really sure what you mean though. If you mean the house of Hador or Haleth, they, like literally every other tribe of the Edain live on through the Peredhil and their descendants, like Aragorn. Last echoes of Beleriand? Galadriel, Elrond, literally every Sinda by definition carry on the legacy of Beleriand. Gondolin I’ll give to you, but technically speaking Glorfindel carries on their legacy.
@@ibbi30 I think he refers to the Battle of the Last Alliance as some sort of "war to end all wars", just like what The World War I was supposed to be in our world (except we now know what it actually turned out to be at the end).
For if Isildur destroyed the Ring then, all Evil would've ended there: Gondor wouldn't have become the barren realm it was during the Third Age and Rohan would have been out of Saruman's wile: the world of wonder would have been longer.

Societies and cultures degrading over time is a major theme of Tolkien's work.
I love how when the line "In Mordor where the shadows are" comes, there's a whisper in the background singing too that sounds a lot like Sauron's ominous whispering voice. Such a cool detail. This song is so beautiful, you did such a marvelous job!
Probably one of the best poems I have ever heard. It is so elegiac, so melancholic. It depicts Tolkien's philosophy of delayed victory/defeat so well. Living in the shadow of collapsing world, longing for yesteryear...
Gil Galad was an elven king...
A lot of Tolkien's poems are like that. Lament for the Rohirrim for example.
“. . . together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat.”
Gil-Galad was the high king of the Noldor. Elendil was the king of Arnor. It is beautiful seeing an Elf and a man fighting for their home. It shows that Men were actually stronger than Sauron thought and it shows that the Elfs wouldn't leave their friends to die. Even if they had to fight the most evil enemie of the Second and Third Age.

I just don't understand. I watch tributes to GoT characters, I watch Star Wars videos, I watch scenes from Vikings, I watch fight in Marvel and DC universes. I read Wheel of Time, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn and a few others great fiction masterpieces. But songs from Middle Earth give some thing, like that it is higher than everything in other fictional worlds. That evil here is greater, heroism is greater, that everything else is greater. That, if Rand al'Thor, Jon Snow, Rey, Ragnar and Spider-Man heard this song would be also surprised, how deep is this world.

It's true. The mythic depth Tolkien imbues into his universe surpasses everything else.
You are right. There is something to Tolkins works that other lack. A certain deepness or soul, that other works never seem to reach.

it was said when sauron killed Gil-galad, his hands were so hot, he burned him alive.
I love how the first verse starts off with one voice and then grows into many. It is as if there is some sombre procession of mourning through a town and as the people hear the tune, they all join their own sorrow to the song.
This song perfectly embodies the thing Tolkien's stories are all about in my mind. Great heroes, tragedies, darkness and a sad magic.

"And where he dweleth, none can say." But...we totally know what happened to Gil-Galad. He died in a badass 3 on 1 melee with Elendil and Isildur, all vs Sauron at the Siege of Barad-dur. One thing I wish the movies had included; Isildur didn't get in a cheapshot with Sauron reaching down like a moron, it was a 4 way insane melee with some of the greatest warriors in the history of Arda.
It's actually the other way around. Elves go to the Halls of Waiting, and humans into the unknown.
The song would make far more sense if elven souls were the ones fading from the world, but it just ain't it.
Also, lest I recall, on the books Isildur merely loots Sauron's body.
It's actually Narsil and Aeglos who dealt the death wounds, even though their bearers died first
Carlos Schwambach you are correct, Tolkien, in the various texts where he discusses this duel, mentions that gilgalad and elendil defeated Sauron but also dying themselves. Isildur just cut the ring from the defeated Sauron’s hand after he fell.
Sauron was going to pick up Isildur so he could SET HIM ABLAZE!
In all fairness, they don't know if he's been reincarnated in Valinor or still in the Halls.
The Fall of Gil-Galad is one of my absolute favorite poems, and reading it was the beginning of falling in love with the deeper lore of Middle-Earth. Thanks for making this rendition, people, thank you so much.

The bards could be Americas best musicians, but their words and notes would be monkeyed with by the army's bureaucracy and PR departments. By the time the songs hit stateside, they would be shells of their former self that don't catch on. People would have to wait for returning soldiers to hear the full unedited versions which would resound throughout the ages.
i don't know about other country but in France, the military are proud of there songs and every year, each promotion creates a song in honor of a battle or a great soldier

Please do the song of Beren and Luthien. It's the most tolkienish text you could sing since it was probably the most important story of Middle-Earth's lore, at least to Tolkien
Ronan Thibaut he wrote Lúthian Tenuviel on her tombstone, and they wrote Beren on his.
When Tolkien returned from WWI after being injured, the war still going on, he was out with his wife. His wife loved to dance and spontaneously started dancing in this clearing of flowers. Tolkien was overcome with the juxtaposition of the simplistic joy and beauty and individual can have while horrific tragedies are being committed in relative proximity.

Out of all the vocal interpretations out there on the internet of Tolkien's work you guys are definitely doing the best job. The intonation, climatic point, emotion (which others lack) - it's all there.

Strictly speaking, the Tolkien Ensemble did a version. But this one is great, too.
I said "professionally". That rules out the Tolkien Ensemble version. I've shown both versions to some friends of mine who are world class musicians and they all gave superior credits to CDP, without doubts.

If Clamavi De Profundis, gets permission to help Amazon,(Petition becomes successful), their songs could really put heart into the show.(Song of Durin is one of my favourite that i would love Dwarves to sing, just like how they did Tolkien's poem, Far over the Misty Mountains, in the Hobbit Trilogy)
I would like to think Gil-Galad will become a very liked character in the show, people watching his journey. Then non-readers would realise that he was there, at that battle in the very beginning of the LOTR.
Imagine if show ends around where Sauron loses the ring after Isildur cuts his finger. The elves mourning Gil-Galad's death(us too) by singing this song... (shows Mordor in final scene, "In Mordor... where the shadows are.......")
I think it would be a good ending for the show, and it connects itself to Peter Jackson's Trilogy. (Which will now be more significant to people, the more they understand of the Histroy of Middle-Earth, the stronger the bond they have to it)

No matter how much I like modern music but it's never gave me the same chills as J.R.R. Tolkien's poems in your interpretation! I really wished I could listen to them while I was reading books for the first time!
This is even sadder when you kind of take into account the events of his death when Elendil came forward Sauron bashed him away and killed him instantly Gil’Galad enraged strode forward with his Lance to strike him down but Sauron and the one ring together were to strong for him he lifted him off the ground and from what I can account in a sort of way burned him alive? Or like sucked the life out of him with the hand the ring was on all while the army’s of the elves and men could do nothing but stare in horror that’s why in the prologue Sauron reaches down for Isildur rather than strike him with his Mace to do the same to him……..
Only in the movie. In the books Elendil and Gil-galad successfully defeat Sauron but at the cost of their lives. Isildur cuts the ring off of Sauron’s corpse.

Sauron’s skin is so hot that nothing can touch him without being burnt. Him actually holding onto you is a death sentence.

When I first read the poem in the books , the last 3 lines confused me ... I thought he went to mordor and joined with Sauron and became one with the Shadow .... Now I understand that he went to the war and died bravely ...

Love how you inject the Lothlorien theme by Howard Shore for a few seconds using women's voice. Effective use of bass singing at the end along with foreboding whispers ! EXCELLENT work. Tolkien would be proud, to say the least.

Tolkien always had a way of bringing out the deepest feelings in his poems and songs.
His religious background and theme made him see deep into things. Notice how with the fall of the darkness and in every story, the people look to the hope of the One above all returning to make things right and reunite his peoples. Read Silmarillion for that bit.

Amazing rendition. There are basically so much words about Gil Galad in the book. And yet. You feel how beautiful he was. Not as powerful as Feanor. Not as wise as Galadriel. But, in a sense, better than both of them combined.

I first read the Hobbit and trilogy and later saw the movies. To me one of the most interesting aspects of the mythos is the bards' tales, the poetry and song telling of great deeds. This verse in particular was always one of my favorites. Your rendition of it really brings its to life in an epic way .
