Nice review. When you use it just for portraits under normal conditions maybe its not worth the price. But. This is a lens you have to take out when it comes to sports in poor light conditions on a short range of course. Now it becomes a game changer. No chanse for Sigma. On an A9 its a beast, the accuracy and focus speed specially in low light is unmached by the others and its sooo sharp.

Hey Gordon, a question about the off centre blue/purple lens flare shown at 8:18 ruclips.net/video/HTn_xQzbRDo/видео.html
I have a Samyang 35mm f/2.8 for E mount - it has even more pronounced artifacts like this at night. I've been shooting film and then digital MFT for a long time but don't remember encountering such artifacts until my Sony A7 and the Samyang 35mm f/2.8 - and now you also show it with this 135mm lens. What causes the off centre and the amount of off centre flare? Is it specific to full frame or certain lenses? Is there a way of avoiding it in situ or in post? Any info welcome

    • @AstroPinoy

I have the 100 STF which I like so much for Bokeh, no lemon shape bokeh, all round to the edge.. I will have the 135mm in couple of days, but I think they have their own special use. 100STF for bokeh still wins if not too dark.

Looking forward to this video. I saw -- I think two -- videos back in the day where people were trying to use the Sigma / Canon on Sony with an adapter and the focus was not great. This focal length in the native G Master design with the newer Sony eye autofocus should be excellent. I am limping along with a D750 and an older Nikon 180mm 2.8. Somebody slap me into the present.

135 equivalent lenses are very useful and much better corrected than 85, often resulting sharp and high contrast images with creamy bokeh and little to none fringing, the same reason I love the fuji xf90, and they can focus close too. It is simply the closest to perfect lens money can buy.

A R 135mm focal length is just enough for everything I needed “ weddings and portraits” and the lens is much sharper and the auto focus is even faster. Most important thing was the weight difference and the back ground blurr is creamy

Gordon, do you have any experience with the Sony ZA (a-mount) 135 1.8 Zeiss lens? I am using it on my A7r2 and love the IQ that comes out of it. I am manually focusing with an adapter. Just curious if you have any opinion with regards to IQ and aesthetics (micro contrast, etc) vs this new lens variant? I would love to get rapid AF and 'go native' but this Zeiss lens is pretty special. Would love to know if this could very well be a replacement.

I actually quite like it, and find when I post images which show it, most non-photographers really like it too. Plus as I showed, you can eliminate it by closing down to f2.8 if you really want to.

Colours and overall image rendering looks flat. Not nearly as good as a 400$ 135 mm Samyang Lens.

Samyang make some great lenses and you get to save money.

This is not my impression by looking at the first Images - do you have samples of Samyang photographs looking better? Wide open the Sony is sharper and more contrasty than the Samyang at f/1.8, as comparison-tests already have shown.

An in depth review after 90 minutes of usage.. hmm.

No Charlie, if you listened to my intro you'll know I took it home and tested it solidly for several days after the press event, which is why I have photos, videos and results that no-one else does yet. All those ones of the seaside with the birds, the city and star night shots and also the fairy light bokeh test, all mine from home afterwards.

First, beginners/amateurs want HSS. Now, they want that lousy Depth-of-Field looks.
Heck, I & many pros still dreaming NONE of that on our 300, 400, 500 & 600mm lenses.

Excellent review...thank you Gordon. I own two Sigma 135s for my Nikon and Canon...and considering the Sony GM 135 if I buy the A7R IV, but it's about $900 more than the Sigma.
