This lens is the Sony 135mm GM and in this review, I will be reviewing this lens from the perspective of a wedding filmmaker, and telling you why it is my favorite telephoto option for closeup footage.

Have you filmed with a 135mm yet?!
Oh and you can watch a free lesson from Ultimate Wedding Filmmaker here! - ultimateweddingfilmmaker.com/
I got quick question about backgrounds :). Do you have the plastic tube to prevent sag or do you take them off every time after use?
Thank you :)
@@HrvojeGolubic the rolls have cardboard tubes inside :)
Just shot my whole wedding on a 135mm gm. My second shooter on a 35mm gm such a sweet combo. Those 135 shots look soo intimate and epic
Love it!
I pulled the trigger on this lens almost 2 years ago. It was really a stretch of my budget as a student. It was my first GM lens. I still love it today and one of the main reasons I still shoot Sony. Today, I use the (new) Sigma 35 & 85 or Sony 50 1.2 GM & 135 combo in the bag.
That's my same set up, and I love it.
135 GM is my favorite focal length next to 35mm. It has a fabulous look that I love to use for portraits. But I only use the Tamron 35-150, which is gorgeous and perfect for wedding filming. After 10 years of wedding, two things are important to me: flexibility and F-Stop. And the Tamron combines these two attributes. A monster!
the 35-15p is the best lens ever made
interesting perspective. thank you.
I watched a lot and this was the most helpful. You really nailed explaining usability and the non technical aspect of "the look and feel". Thumbs up dude!
I've used this lens a LOT for motocross this year. The tracks are usually built so that you can easily control the focal length and the f1.8 just gives the images a look that anyone using a zoom cant quite get. Throw an ND filter on while panning to keep it at/close to f1.8 and the images are INSANE. Love this lens.
Thanks for all the info Matt! I just started using the 135 a month ago and couldn't be happier! It's amazing!!
Absolutely love 135. We just picked up the Sigma 135 and got to use it at the weekend, the results were stunning and it was great fun to use!
Great job on this video Matt! Thanks for making it.
There’s also one feature you can use which make The 135mm very useful ( andI don’t see many RUclipsrs talking about it ) is using APS-C mode .. which will give you the 200mm that you have in 70-200 .. as A7r series owner it’s very useful to me .. I get 26MB in R4
Yes I bought the GM 135 mm and it is beautiful. Very expensive but no regrets.
Back when we had a more limited budget, I just bought a Canon 135mm f2.0 with an adaptor and it looked pretty dang good especially for the price!
I often find i'm shooting around 135 with my 70-200 2.8 GM lens for a number of years. Would love to try a 135 1.8 some day, but find i reach for 35/85 combo if going with primes. Always a bucket list of lenses to aspire to owning lol... Those example shots shared in this video do look amazing! Great video!
The Sony 135mm 1.8 GM are an excellent Lens with outstanding image quality, I have it and I love it, I just wish for a 1.4x GM Teleconverter !
The Lens are extremely sharp with high resolution, so with a Sony A7RIV you can make crops of less than 1/4 of the image and still get very sharp images !
I could imagine this lens is incredible. I just picked up tamrons 70-180 and find myself often using that same focal length! Great video and all solid points.
this is your best review man keep it coming!
About time Sony got on board, and supported the informative content you make!
I used the Canon 135mm for a bit and that by far is one of my favorite focal lengths. I always loved the results I got with it.
sameeee! love the 135mm Canon, still use it on my FX3
I personally love this lens, my personal selection of work lenses are the 135gm, 50gm and 14gm, this combo is great for just about any kind of work or idea you want to create, much more unique than the typical 12-24mm trifecta, 24-70mm and 70-200mm. These glasses are magical!!!
Interesting selection.
Thank you for the review. Though I do shoot weddings & events, my go to is the Tamron 35-150mm (with APS-C = 35-225mm) f/2.0-f/2.8 to avoid lens swapping during these events. The excellent fast AF motor on this 135mm (APS-C = 202mm) f/1.8 is used mostly for indoor sports like hockey, soccer, roller derby events and outdoor before sunset or cloudy conditions to give me the extra shutter speed while keeping the ISO down. Of course the close focus distance is an advantage when the hockey players are smashed against the protective boards in front of me (no pretty flowers to shoot there!).
Love your videos Matt!
Great and honest review. Thanks for this one.
hey, can you compare the 135mm GM with the older 135mm zeiss you had? in terms of overall optical quality, backlight performance and microcontrast, please?
I love your videos, they have helped me a lot, but I have a doubt! I have a canon r6 that records 4k 10 bits 422, will the macbook pro 14'' ("best bang" from your video "Video Editing Macbook Buyer's Guide in 2022") handle this type of videos without having to create proxies to edit them ?
What about using it to take very close up macro shots for the rings?
Hi Matt! New follower here! I’ve loved this lens for photography for years. How do you film with the 135? Is it on a gimbal or handheld?
I have one and after the first wedding, the results were amazing!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I prefer the 105 focal length over the 135, though I understand the 135's appeal.
Thanks mate, your videos are always awesome i have already a 18-105, for apsc i think that the 135 should be a nice add fpt portrait and indoor sport although for simple portrait i find nice the 105@f4 that on apsc is a 137,5mm and it has already a nice bokeh on yhe tele sidem
This is one of my favorite lenses of all time buuuut… sold it when I got the Tamron 35-150.. at 135 focal length, 2.8 is bokehlicious enough … sooo versatile! But I agree - visual quality of that 135 is unmatched! So so good. Just found myself taking it to every wedding and not using it enough :(
Tamron making some killer lenses latelt
same here.. also 150mm 2.8 looks pretty cool with the slight swirly bokeh effect.
Hey since you've used the 135mm focal length at both 1.8 and 2.8, can I ask your opinion on the difference? You sold it so I'm guessing that it wasn't significant enough for you to keep both but if that's not the case, I'd appreciate any information about the difference and if the 1.8 is worth it.
I m using A6000 with sony 85mm f1.8 which is equivalent to 135 mm its my favorite lens for portraits
If 135 is not long enough for you, just remember, on modern Sony cameras, you can still have a 4k footage using clear image zoom, or crop mode.
Great video, I love my 135mm 1.8. On the wedding footage did you use A1, FX3, or something different? Thanks....Keep up the good work
A7IV and a7siii
Great review! Thank you
Agree, the 135GM is just magical and couldn't be replaced by even the 70-200GM2
My personal grab and go will always be a 135mm, and the best part about using it is searching for your composition,
I have wanted this lens for my live music videography and photography. For video 135 has been either too short or too long . I still want either this Sony or the Sigma .
I love my sigma 135mm 1.8... IQ is gorgeous, although it's a lot of chunky glass to carry!
Very practical.
So. I typically shoot with two prime lenses and two cameras. One is a 35mm and the other is a 105mm… the point about fixed focal length and FORCES to move around is perfect. Zooms make you lazy. Prime makes you move and change the angle also.
Love that setup!
love the new space! looks so clean.
also, yes. this lens is amazing
Thanks so much! 😁
I love my sigma 135mm f1.8! I use it the most for many things!!
My favorite Sony lens. I try to use it whenever I can. Just make sure you don't store it with the lens hood on. The front filter ring shears off and Sony Pro charges $450 to repair.
😱😱😱
1st favorite is the Sony GM 50/1.2
2nd favorite is this beast of a lens. It is so good, especially when paired with a gimbal.
Same combo here and favorited in the same order - amazing lenses
50 or 135 on gimbal?
@@ttomasd Both. But the 135 on the gimbal is some of the sexiest footage I've ever shot.
@@tylerhanson7982 what gimbal do you use? Thx
The Zeiss Milvus 135 f2 is magnificent if you can handle a manual focus lens.
Thanks for the video. I wonder if the 18-135 be also as good... probably the 135 Prime is better. Anyone has the 18135mm?
I USE MY SIGMA 135 CANON VERSION ON MY SONY A7S3 WITH MY META BONES THAT GET TO A APUTURE OF 1.3 N I LOVE IT. AUTO FOUCS NOT AS FAST BUT IT LOOKS AMAZING
The sigma 135mm 1.8 is also fantastic but it's a chonker of a lens! It's huge compared to the Sony and the canon lenses. Some folks recommend getting an after market lens support collar for it because it's so big and hefty
does this lens have repeatable focus?
lol... Thank you Master Matt!!! You might have just solved the ongoing/frustrating photographer problem I have had many times at weddings with "photos" being so much more important than vide bahhhhha. (until the couple gets you video and it blows away and static photo ;) Yupper... swap the 24-70mm and sneak around the photographer with my 135mm ;) SOLD!
Hi Matt, not sure if you already have a video about this. I'm a beginner/intermediate videographer and I'm looking to invest in a new camera. I know you are an advocate for the Sony A7SIII but I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a lower priced camera, as the A7SIII is a bit out of my budget. Thank you!!
Sony a7iv if you can afford it, otherwise an a7iii
@@whoismatt Thank you!!
Great video !!
This lense is my all time favourite especially for portraits.
I was wanting this lens as I love 135mm. But for the price I ended up buying the Tamron 35-150.
Tamron’s great!
Shooting with the Canon EOS R3, and can't wait for the new RF 135mm to be announced!
It’s gonna be magical!
To save some money I just use the Sony 85mm 1.8 on an APS-C camera to get that 135mm kind of look
kool I went ahead and got the samyang af 135mm. Mainly because it's cheaper and it's just as good.
damn...he revealed my secret weapon... absolutely in mad love with my sony 135
😂 sorry I should have kept it secret
@@whoismatt yeah, i tried it as a rental first last year since after switching to sony, filming on such a lens actually became a possibility. And ever since ice dreamed of owning one and finally bought one used 2 months ago. The Rendering is so sublime, it makes basically every location fotogenic since it knocks any background out if you need it to…and the flares are so beautiful…oh man…im. Ow experimenting doing more gimbalwork and fast danceing shots with it and really like what ive seen so far!
Sony's sharpest lens. I use this as my second zoom. 135 FF, 200 cropped. Mainly use it during speeches and dances
This man knows the game! 04:35
It would be awesome to see the Sony 135mm 1.8 vs Samyang AF 135mm 1.8 👌
I need to get one of them to test
@@whoismatt I would like to see that comparison since I can't afford to buy the sony because of the high cost $$$. Please Matt, get that lens for comparison. Thank you
After picking up my 135, I hardly touch my 70-200... It's that good.
GH5 + metabones speede boster + rokinon 85 mm 1.8 = 110mm ; )
It’s awesome!!
SO awesome!
Make a video with 135mm 1.8 zeiss with la-ea5 pleaseeee :)
It’s good but the native e mount lens is better
@@whoismatt agree...mid 2000s v. 2020s design...
This is the best lens ever!
Do you purposely shave your beard that way or do you just not grow it fully?
Dream to meet mr johnson once in lifetime this guy is 💥
The tamron 35-150 is too good to pass up though for solo shoots.
Does everything other than ultrawide

Samyangs 135 is just as sharp for a fraction of the price!
Samyang's making great lenses these days
I don't think I'd ever NEED a 135 if I already have 35 & 85 1.4 and 35-150.
Rent one and you’ll see 😉
Can't you just zoom your 70-200 to 135 though? 🤔
I cover this in the video 😉
05:32 He's looking into my soul and doesn't know if he likes what he sees.
OMG. This is exactly why my partner has control over the corporate VIsa card
No I dont need, I use 85mm 1.4 with crop if I need with A7III 🌞
+1
Nobody needs a 135mm F/1.8. It’s like a Ferrari, its not a need..its a want. I have an 85mm F/1.4 but I went and bought a 135mm F/1.8 because I wanted it and it’s all buttah baby!!! 😂
You get something out of the focal range that you cannot get out of an 85mm. And I love my 85mm. But if you have the distance from your subject The compression on the 135mm is astounding, the background at that distance wide open at F/1.8 obliterates everything and brings it so much closer.
If the photographer doesn't understand why they're not in the way if you're using a 135mm... the couple needs a new photographer lol
😂
1:59 I'm like... that's what she said... T_T sorry I'm insufferable.
The kissing was too long. I was watching this video in waiting room, people thought probably something bad.
105mm 1.4 sigma is better.
Big difference in focal length
Selling”Pre sets”is a straightforward grift.ANYBODY LITERALLY ANYBODY can make a preset in seconds.Total BS.
