I love how thanks to the camera recorder and Dan’s video it’s possible to see the pose/posture of the model as seen in the frame, as well as how she bent or leaned to get that effect in-camera. It’s extremely helpful to notice those details. Thanks, Julia !
So happy you did this video. I shoot this combo all the time, and the 135gm has become one of my favorite lenses ever. Like you, I had to get used to being so far away, but that is a small price to pay for the quality of the photos I obtain. The sharpness, the autofocus, the bokeh, the colors...everything is perfect. I also use this combo with extension tubes for macro/closeup photos. While the R4 isn't my favorite low light camera, this lens pairs really well with the A7III and I often shoot this combo too. Thanks Julia for your great videos.
I learned so much watching you shoot portraits just now - thank you for sharing this video! I’ve been loving my Sony 90mm macro for portrait work, but these images are stunning and make me want that added sharpness you get with the 1.8 aperture.
Thank you! I'm really loving winter this year in Australia, it's finally rained after the bushfires and everything went from being soooo dry and brown to really lush and beautiful 😍 I don't want it to end!
Your late reviews are always fun😅😅😋 I love this focal length! . I use 85 on a crop body to get like around 135mm look... Keep rocking!!! I hope you will do more shoots with this lens. It's awesome! 💙
Sony 135 is my fav Sony lens thus far. Unmatched image quality!! It’s so sharp on my A7iii, I can only imagine looking at the images in Lightroom from the A7riv. Great job Julia!
Hey Julia, as you keep posting videos, i keep learning more .. Love the compression in that lens while Amanda is so sweet 😍 .. I was so impressed with the results from such low light conditions
Thank you so much! Haha I was just saying to Dan the other day that's its funny how most days of Australian winter feel almost the same to a Polish summer 😅
I love this lens! Thanks for the great video and look forward to see you doing more videos with lens. Would love to get your thoughts on the camera too. The file size is a concern for me, but would love your impressions overall.
Very nice photography you are best photographer I always watch your vedio &enjoy I am big fan of you you have good personality you give new in your vedio thanks
Hello Julia!, the best combo any portrait photographer could dream. Master piece by SONY the sharpest in its kind. I see you are a SONY shooter now. Love 9:20 capture
Hi Julia, my faves from this shoot are with the yellowish leaves in both the foreground and background. somewhere around the 6:45 point of the video. It's weird looking at the leaves changing colors and you in a sweater, we don't get that until the end of September or early October! lol You're gorgeous as always... See you next week!
We just got one at work and I don't even want to take it out of the box because I know I'll buy it. Beautiful shots as always. The last ones were my favourite.
With that camera and that lens, the images look so beautiful and those colors so beautiful, I would like to see more editions of your photos. Nice job... 🤗👍🙋🏻♂️👋😊🌹🌷🥀
I am a canon fanboy . 70-200 2.8 is my favourite for portraits . Colours look excellent in the clicks in this video . Looking forward for more such videos
135mm is my favorite but mine is Rokinon 135mm f/2 manual lens. Yes, I'm crazy using manual eyeball focusing. On top of that I'm still using the original a7. But the images created from this combo is great! I still want the Sony 135mm.
I'm seriously considering switching to sony A7R3 from my canon 7D mkii. I have the sigma Art 135 f1.8 and the sigma art 105 f1.4 which would have to be adapted. I'm curious as to how the adapted performance would be with eye AF Great video
Hi, I would like buy the SEL135F18GM but It's little expensive, could you please put one picture full pixeles for cheek the definition of this lens? only I would like see how it works
Classic Polly 135mm is not flexible but lovely for portraits Love my 135mm F2 Canon (model still produced since 1996) This new Sony must give similar nice bokeh maybe even slightly more bokeh as F/1.8 and slightly sharper at F/2 Rest must be very similar and so.. very nice
Hey Julia, Would love to see a video of how you fix the green tones in your images when shooting around grass. Definitely something i've struggled with.
Ooh I have a video about that actually! I uploaded it a long time ago so I found it here: ruclips.net/video/u6z2I_sJ46o/видео.html&t I hope that helps :)
I have a very similar jersey😂 I've seen her wear it before on RUclips and ever since, I've called it my Julia Trotti Jersey😂. This camera and lens combination is awesome!
Hi Julia, what would you recommend for someone who's starting out from scratch to get the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM or Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM????? The camera I will be using Sony as7iii and I would like to use the Lens mostly for vlogging, filmmaking and taking photos at the same. what's ur advice please?? Thank you!
So weird seeing fall since I have 34C temp here now! I think the sony yellows and oranges straight out of the camera look great in this, and the skin tone.
I have this lens, I use it professionaly for sports, product and portraits but I enjoy watching ur reviews of this lens as if its some sort of assurance I made the right purchase hahaa
Hy julia, do you setting auto to get this picture.? Or manual? I've wondering about managed time when we're hunting picture in outside like this. So we're not busy changed the setting when the model every single movement
I always shoot in manual! I have a video about how to shoot manual easily on my channel, if you sort my videos by most popular you should be able to find it :) I hope that helps!
Julia, as always a very interesting and informative video. I like your interaction with all your subjects. I am wondering how this lens would compete with the relatively new 70-180mm f/2.8 Tamron. Obviously, you might have more versatility using the zoom but, I am specifically wondering how the f/2.8 aperture of the Tamron would stack up against the f/1.8 of the Sony outdoors. Of course you would get more BG blur at f/1.8 than at f/2.8 but, you just might be able to compensate for that by using a longer focal length on the Tamron. Indoors, IMO, the 70-180mm might very well we a better choice since the lens to subject distance of the 70mm through 134mm focal range would allow you to get a bit closer to your subject. Additionally, since the background is totally within my control when shooting indoors, I don't absolutely need the very wide aperture to blow out any BG distractions.
Richard Crowe Hi Richard, I do not own the 70-180, but I had purchased the Tamron 28-75 and sold it some weeks later. I did not like the bokeh at all. It was irritating und not pleasing. It actually made me feel dizzy when looking at my pictures. The 135 1.8 GM on the other hand has a very smooth and creamy bokeh. Again, I do not know about the bokeh of the 70-180, but I recommend to base your choice not on quantity (of blur), but rather on the quality. However, bokeh cannot be measured and it is a matter of taste.
That's so interesting! I have a video on the Tammy 70-180 up on my channel with the same unedited cropped in examples if you wanted to see. Would be great to try out the 28-75 too as I've mostly heard some good things about it.
It's a little tricky for me to compare zoom vs prime.. if I was solely a portrait photographer I would probably go for the 70-180 as I like having that zoom versatility when it comes to portraits. Like I mentioned in the video since I'm so used to shooting portraits at 35mm and being close to my subject it felt very strange being SO far away on the 135 haha and I'm just stuck there the entire photoshoot since I can't zoom. That's also just a personal preference thing though as I know some photographers DO like being further away from their subject. However since I do wedding photography as well and it's my main reason to have a lens with reach like this I would go for the 135. At the moment with my Canon 135 f2 I already have to push my ISO a bit higher than I would like at some of the wedding venues I regularly shoot at, so 2.8 just wouldn't work unfortunately, but 1.8 would give me that extra bit of light which would be really handy! I'll see if I can find 2 good bokeh comparisons from each shoot I've done on both lenses to share on my Instagram story soon.
I own both, the 135 and the 100 STF. Background separation on the STF is even better due to the integrated filter. The most pleasing bokeh, I‘ve ever seen. However, Julia is taking backlit photos most of the time. Therefore she is counting on high transmission. The STF has a t-stop of 5.6 (f-stop is 2.8), which might not work for her. If (low) is not a challenge, I agree with Scott to take a look at the 100 2.8 GM STF.
Why would you prefer this one over the Tamron 70-180 for a wedding? Also I’d love to see a bokeh comparison between those two lenses and maybe also vs the 85.
Unfortunately when comparing 1.8 to 2.8, I would rather go for the wider aperture due to some of the venues that I shoot in. With my Canon 135 f2 lens that I use now I already have to push my ISO higher than what I would like. And yess that's a good idea! I have a video comparing my Canon 85 vs Canon 135 - would love to do this with the Sony's as well :)
Dear Julia, I'm happy to see your experience using Sony gear. I can't afford all the top-end Sony glass, I'm afraid. I use 3'rd party and heritage glass, which can be fun and rewarding. Love the chunky cable knit, not too keen on the colour...maybe it's my poor laptop colour rendering. By the way, what do you think about viewfinders?
Hello Julia! a question; Is it possible to reduce the resolution in the menu of the A7R IV? I would like to have it as the only camera but sometimes I don't need that much resolution. Thank you very much and congratulations on your videos!
Unfortunately you can't do that, but I wish you could! The only way to get a smaller file size is if you shoot in APSC mode, but then you will have a different field of view with the lenses you're using. And thank you!
I love the 135mm focal length for all the reasons mentioned, but it can be a bit tricky. Not at all surprised that Julia went for the 50mm f1.4 and can justify the 135mm as part of her wedding kit. Wondering if Dan is excited about using them in his video work. Maybe not as excited as the A7SIII finally showing up on the horizon?🤔
Yess me too, it's a perfect fit for my wedding camera bag and even though I feel like I'm super far away from my subject I would like to use it a little more here and there for portraits as well when I finally get one :) Oooh Dan is super excited about the A7sIII announcement, he's been waiting a looooong time haha
Thanks Julia for the video, it is highly informative and joy to watch. The Sony A7R4 + Sony 135/1.8GM is the combo that made me to switch from Nikon DSLR. I love its speed, sharpness, bokeh and colors. Some reviewers consider this lens as clinically sharp, but I just think this is a new quality standard that older AF lenses (of any make) cannot even get close to. I generally like how you were composing you portrait shots, but those at the last location, with the green foliage background, your model was standing just a bit too close to her background and hence the bokeh turned out to be a bit busier than ideal. Anyways, I think I still need a lot of practice to take such beautiful shots as you do. Question: considering your portrait shooting and other genders, do you prefer this Sony 135mm f1.8GM lens over the Sony Zeiss 50mm F1.4? If yes/no why?
I love how thanks to the camera recorder and Dan’s video it’s possible to see the pose/posture of the model as seen in the frame, as well as how she bent or leaned to get that effect in-camera. It’s extremely helpful to notice those details. Thanks, Julia !
Thanks so much! Yeah I love being able to share what I see while taking photos in these behind the scenes :)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the livefeed in the corner is so great 🤙🏻 Great work by you all yet again, of course!

Beautiful colors and location! Can't wait for autumn to arrive. Just bought a lens very comparable to the 135mm, love it so much!

Question: considering your portrait shooting and other genders, do you prefer this Sony 135mm f1.8GM lens over the Sony Zeiss 50mm F1.4? If yes/no why?
Hey Julia. Great video and review. What's that thing you have connected to the base of the camera? I also see a cable.
Thank you! It's a wifi recorder so you can see what I see while taking pictures in the video :)
@@juliatrotti Do you need to be recording video for it to work? If so, it also means you are taking stills while recording video?
What do you use to record your camera screen?
