    That's the 1 lens I've been waiting for.
    My Canon 135/2L on an MC-11 adaptor has been the makeshift solution waiting for this to show up. It looks like an improvement on everything except for size/weight (which was to be expected on a larger aperture) and the autofocus looks A LOT better than my 135 and the Sigma. I was not expecting that as I don't think there has been a 135 prime with fast AF till now.

    What do you think of a 135mm focal length for sports and concert photography? I am debating getting the Sony or Sigma 135mm or the Sony 70-200mm f4. I would like the faster lens because of tough lighting conditions, but the zoom would give me and my A7iii some flexibility as well.

    A colleagues a7riii suffered major faults on a shoot in Norway caused by putting the camera down in the snow just like in this video, worth remembering there's zero weather sealing on the base, (that's what he was told by Sony support:).Have to say though the lens looks like a winner.

    Thanks for the review folks. After hovering over the order button for a long while, I finally clicked on it, yesterday......the price of entry is certainly stiff, especially when f/2.8 zooms are available for FAR less !
    It is also a difficult focal length to work with, and being a prime, it lacks the zoom's flexibility, but going back to my experience with a prior mount, I always dug out the 135/1.8, whenever there needed to be absolute perfection in the final product, with zero compromises........the 85/1.4s simply could not approach the output from the 135/1.8. I expect that to be the case here, with this lens on the A7RIV.

    The lens hood should have been much more rugged. I wish for 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for this lens !
    My primary set of lenses is now Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, exellennt set of lenses, highly recommended ! Although I will like to see a better new version of the 55mm, a 60mm allround macro lens will be very nice !

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  Год назад +1

      I'd take the 70-200 first. I find the flexibility of a zoom helps at a wedding since I usually have little control over where I stand at a ceremony which is the main time I use a 70-200. For portraits, you have a bit more flexibility so I love primes for portrait sessions. Plus the 70-200 is actually lighter I think!

    Between the Sony GM 100STF and the Sony GM 135... which would you recommend?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 лет назад

      I honestly haven't used the 100mm but between the 1 stop advantage, insanely fast focusing on the 135, and corner to corner sharpness, I would only chose the 100mm if I needed a wider focal length. I feel like a 70-200 would negate the need for the 100stf

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 года назад +1

      The 135 absolutely feels faster but I don't think it would justify the purchase for portraits. The 70-200 is plenty fast and a 135 while awesome is not a focal length I use as often as say 85mm

    I’m new to photography and learning just for better family photos but I thought a 135mm lens would be for distance like wildlife/landscape work and that it would be too close for portrait/weddings. Anyone recommend a video for understanding lenses and scenarios in which they should be used?

    • @lukazupie7220
      @lukazupie7220 5 лет назад +1

      Landscape usually wide angle, portrait 85mm+, wildlife as long as possible.
      I suggest looking at tamron 28-75 or sony 28mm f2 and sony 85mm 1.8. For the price of this 135 u can have all 3 (not that u need all 3, i would either buy tamron or 2 sony lenses mentioned). Next lens i would buy is something really wide like samyang 14mm, laowa 15 or even 12mm, voigtlander has some ultra wides..

    • @ivankiefer3886
      @ivankiefer3886 4 года назад

      When panning side to side there is like a jello effect, it shows more with telephoto lenses and it is because of the slow reading speed of the sensor. I commond with full frame and apsc cameras. The only camera that has almost not rolling shutter in ff is the sony a9 or a9ii.

  • @photographerjonathan

    if you pause the video at 7:32 and look at the word STEREO, and you see the contrast difference, i am not so sure the Sony is as good as the Sigma. but I can't judge from a one shot comparison, but one thing i am wondering, if both these shots were taken on a tripod that was never moved, than why is the Sigma shot slightly closer. you cannot see the word TREBLE in the Sigma shot, maybe the Sony isn't a true 135, or the Sigma is actually a little longer than 135. for me the Sony weight advantage over the Sigma is a big selling point, and if the focusing is faster than that is also, but i am not convinced yet that the image quality is better than the Sigma. i will have to see more comparisons. this lens has got my interest just because i have never actually bought a 135 lens before, I have always had 85mm primes. good video, enjoyed watching the snow falling

    • @rockapejv
      @rockapejv 5 лет назад +1

      @Foto4Max Yes, I would be very surprised if this Sony lens can outperform the Sigma 135 that I own, in terms of sharpness, but then examples from all manufacturers do vary slightly within their own production; the Sony does look very sharp and is certainly more versatile than the Sigma (nice to have a manual aperture ring).

    • @PKSiAMiAM
      @PKSiAMiAM 5 лет назад

      Companies often say things which are not exactly true. If you look at various lenses they are not always precisely the focal length advertised due to focus breathing and the lens construction. It's exactly the same with fstops.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 лет назад

      So yes it was shot on a tripod with a 5 second timer. I tried but can't guarantee the tripod didn't slightly shift when changing lenses though since it is more of a travel tripod and these are heavy lenses. Honesty, both lenses are crazy sharp and are amazing wide open. At F1.8 I usually have almost no DOF so I don't give a crap about corner sharpness (unless it was horrible and neither of these are) since I'm not focusing on anything in the corner on a lens like this at F1.8. I think practical things like custom buttons, aperture rings, and focus speed/reliability are far more meaningful when it comes to these 2 lenses. Thanks!!!

      @anthonyc1883 5 лет назад

      @@PKSiAMiAM So true. And let's not forget guide numbers with flash. And the funny thing, whether it's focal length, f/stops or guide numbers, the amount that is "off" always seems to benefit the manufacturer! Hmm...

      We talked about both. We did have a chance to use the beta firmware and it's much better for subject tracking

      Dan Watson ah , looking forward to the new update. I’m still hoping they come out with an 85 GM 2.0 (which probably won’t happen for a while) based on the 24 GM size/weight & better AF. Maybe the new update will help revitalize the 85 though giving it a bit more shelf life. Great review by the way. The best of the 135 that I’ve seen alongside amazing cinematics 🙏🏽

    Today has been an arms race for all the Sony endorsees to get their version of this vid out! You'd almost think there is some impartiality going on!

      Actually it's more of a youtube thing. We all know that youtube is more of a first come first serve platform than a who created the best video platform so everyone wants to go live as soon as the embargo is over and the announcement hits. I don't think Sony gives a crap when our video goes live. They have never once asked me about a date for a review or even if I was producing one or what content might be included. No brand has actually

    Great review! She needs to watch the use of the word "honestly". She's saying it a lot and in addition to being distracting it indicates that a person also sometimes responds not as honestly. At least that's what it seems. Otherwise why would it ever be used. That's why I never use that description. Just a point I wanted to make and thanks for the information!

    what we wanted to see is the bokeh rendering of the Sigma vs the Sony...we know both are going to be super sharp :/

      shaolin95 other channels are still getting footballs for bokeh. But better than the Sigma not better than the Canon. Even the Canon doesn't have circular bokeh.

    GREAT VIDEO. The only problem is that those filler words "to be honest". Whaddayamean you have been dishonest with me the whole time? Please stop using them, it sounds like whatever else you said earlier were not honest.
    Yes I'm on a mission to get people to stop using these empty words!
