The best case scenario for this project is to have Yoshiaki Koizumi pursue his creative storytelling ideas, the same person responsible for Majora's Mask and Super Mario Galaxy being as memorable as they were. But my worry is if Nintendo Pictures becomes another Illumination in creating bog standard children's entertainment.
If Nintendo ever partners up with a studio to create a movie adaptation Pikmin, this is who Miyamoto would personally cast as the characters: Jim Parsons as Olimar John Mulaney as Louie John Goodman as President
On the subject of movie adaptations, I think Nintendo is in a win-win scenario. If they decide to create a Mario Cinematic Universe, and play it safe, there's so many ideas that one franchise has to offer. I genuinely think that's the plan. Charlie Day and Seth Rogan have said, on separate occasions, that they want movies for Luigi and Donkey Kong respectively. Every actor who was cast signed a document stipulating that they were obliged to star in a series of sequels and spin-offs. Day and Rogan know they'll be in the main spotlight, but talk about these movies hypothetically to avoid violating their contracts. I can see a Mario trilogy, a Luigi’s Mansion movie, a Donkey Kong Country movie and a Peach movie happening.
I'm not sure if it has quite enough substance for a video, but one thing I noticed recently that I've seen no one else address is that when NDCube rebranded as Nintendo Cube, they adopted a logo in the exact same format as 1-UP Studio: a colored rectangle with an identical font inside. Theirs just carries over the blue from their last logo instead of being green like 1-UP Studio's. It's a small thing, but it could have very interesting implications for how Nintendo plans to handle their subsidiaries in the future. I certainly hope it doesn't mean they want to standardize all their logos - 1-Up Studio's works for me because the font looks slightly more inspired there and their color ties into their namesake, but Nintendo Cube's is very bland. Also, I imagine you might be interested in doing a deep dive into the Nintendo project Bandai Namco just reported was either cancelled or put on hold, and what it might have been given various factors (their 3D action game remaster? Pokken/New Pokemon Snap/a new Pokemon spinoff? Mario Baseball/Sports? Something to do with Xenosaga? Something new for them?).
Oh, that's a really interesting observation. Weirdly, I did have an idea to do something on Nintendo's branding given how homogenised their recent subsidiaries (Systems, Pictures etc.) are in this respect. So yeah, I may well do a video on that at some point. As for Bandai Namco - so far I can only find Bloomberg as asserting that it was a Nintendo project that was canned and so I have more questions than answers. Are there any other sources? Are they referring to the cancellations earlier this year or fresh cancellations? Did these take place before or after Studio 2 focused on Nintendo? It all feels a bit murky at present.
I can only imagine this as Nintendo's version of Squeenix's dedicated 3D animated studio. But Nintendo as always, will not be following the trend or what gamers expect of them. NP will probably be their inhouse subdivision that will make trailers, mini movies and cinematographic direction of story scenes.
Whatever they do I’d like to see them distance themselves from US production, as much as possible. Japan has more than enough talent to produce its own movies away from Hollywood ….”quality”.
Huh. Many thanks for the correction. Been so long since I researched this I can't remember why I came across that. I'll see if I can edit the video but in the meantime I'll pin your comment.
Whenever you end up going through the accuracy of your predictions again, it might be nice to also look at how you did for specific groupings. It'd be interesting to see if you'd been pretty on track when it comes to a certain studio or topic, while perhaps mario himself turns out to be rather tricky to predict, as an example.
I worry about how they're going to handle that Zelda movie. Link's silence isn't just a video gamey trope to be erased (although that was how it came to be). As of the more recent games it's been reinforced as an important part of his personality, Zelda's diary goes into detail about why he is such a quiet person and it's really interesting. At this point I just feel that if Link were to speak, he would cease to be Link. So I struggle to imagine what the movie will do, I'm hoping they'll just make him canonically unable to speak to get around it but that's probably not marketable enough for Hollywood.
I wish Nintendo would team up with some third party anime studios to create shows for their IP. Studio Trigger obviously already did a fantastic job adapting the Cyberpunk 2077 game into Edgerunners, I think they could do great with something like Splatoon or honestly even Zelda as well.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention how Nintendo Pictures has had some non-Nintendo projects post-acquisition, though perhaps they've just been contractual obligations.
I was doing my own research on Dynamo before the name change, finding out what they worked on before and apparently they did some kind of CGI anime. Not the most exciting or well made project in my opinion but it does stand to reason that in the future we could see another 3d series from them. Really it's a low chance as there are so many other studios to handle TV animation now and Nintendo Pictures seems to be gearing towards special projects related to games for the moment.
14:29: We don't have confirmation on this, but I suspect that Zelda project already fell apart entirely behind the scenes. They haven't announced a new director and Wes Ball has already moved on to doing a Ruiner (Really...?) adaptation, and...why would you sign onto a Ruiner movie, of all things, if your Zelda movie is still happening?
Movie projects can be in limbo for many years when dealing with the business of Hollywood and lining up the talent, (many people and studios have a backlog of projects scheduled out years in advance. Personally I wish Laika, (the stop motion studio behind Coraline and Kubo), would create a series of stop motion films recreating the story of Majora's Mask but that will likely never happen. :/
Wes had already said beforehand that Zelda may not immediately the next project for him to work on after Planet of the Apes. He brought up his involvement again super recently during an Unreal Engine conference too, who of course are pretty close with Nintendo now, and said he had his hands full with the Zelda movie right now. So I think it's still happening.
Very interesting that Nintendo's relationship with movies went from a live action failure film of Super Mario Brothers to working with Dynamo Pictures to work on 3 Pikmin short films to buy Dynamo Pictures to rename/rebrand Dynamo Pictures to Nintendo Pictures for a successful animated film of The Super Mario Brothers Movie. I hope Nintendo decides to team up with Japanese anime studios, so Nintendo can produce their own anime series based off from Nintendo games. Another reason why Nintendo should team up with Japanese anime studios so Nintendo can put Hollywood studios/companies to shame, and I also hope that indie animation studios will put Hollywood studios/companies to shame! Speaking of indie animation, have you watched Murder Drones, Lackadaisy, The Amazing Digital Circus, Port By The Sea, Ramshackle, Dungeon Flippers, Pieces Of Powder, Paper World, and Catching Up?
It makes sense that the Mario movie was motivated primarily by the desire to expand the Mario IP, I just wish it wasn't so obvious in the final product. The movie's basically devoid of any actual creativity and feels like I'm just watching a show-reel of brand assets at a shareholder conference. My expectations for a Zelda movie are.. dire. My own grumbling aside, this is a great deep dive! Appreciate all the research and details
@@bradbradson4543 The strongest parts of the animated Mario movie are when Mario and Luigi are together. The moment they’re separated, the movie gets boring.
