Great video! I didn't think it had to seem so complicated. I suspect that some seasoned campers like to talk about their 'gear' about like some dudes way into working on cars, or some folks who are way into photography or stereo equipment. Their simplest explanations tend to leave us basic beginners in the dust pretty quickly!. 😅
Just remember if you are running maximum watts on any of these Jackerys (ie: the 160 @ 100 w , 240 @200w and so on) your only going to be able to run for just one hour.

Patricia, you may could have gotten by with the Jackery 300 (with some cpap models) but the 500 is certainly going to have you covered regardless of which cpap you have, so you made a good choice! More soon...safe travels!

Geez Thanks man, I was looking forever for watts and it just didn't have them on my fridges and other items. Then you mentioned amps and you Summed it all up for me. I didn't have a question after that. Awesome Video very informative.
Equating 100 watts to 1 amp really is only an approximation for 120VAC devices. The formula that works for any voltage is, volts times amps = watts, or W = V x A. So, a 120VAC power plug that runs at 2.5 amps will pull 300 watts. Now, the Jackery units use numbers that describe the amp-hours, e.g., a 240 has 240 amp-hours meaning that it will produce 240 amps of power over a 20-hour period or 12 amps per hour. If you're running a 120VAC 2.5 amp device for 300 watts and I want to know how long I can power this with the Jackery 240, then I need to divide 300W by 12 volts, not 120V, and realize that I'm pulling 25 amps per hour... so I have less than 10 hours of constant run time (240 amp-hours divided by 25 amps = 9.8 hours... and this assumes perfection so in actuality I'll get less). And, a hot plate that draws 1000 watts at 120VAC isn't going to last very long on the Jackery 240.
Thus, the rule is, multiply the volts times the amps to get watts, then divide the watts by 12v to get the amp-hours in numbers that relate to the Jackery model #... and then divide the Jackery power rating number by the amp-hours. So, my CPAP with heaters on pulls 77W out of the Jackery 240 at 120V, or 6 amp-hours. I'd get 3 hours of runtime. When I turn off all of the heaters I drop the current draw to 27W... when I change out the 120V power supply to a direct 12V lighter plug adapter the current draw drops to 17W due to the lack of loss in the transformer. Now I'm pulling 1.5 amp-hours out of the device, so I can get around 14 hours of runtime (240 / 17 = approx 14 hours).
Your math is right on, John...except that a hotplate pulling 1000w should not run on a smaller Jackery (such as a 240) to begin with....that kind of draw should immediately shut it down. More soon...safe travels!
@@BudgetTravelGuy yep... I wouldn't try to run a hotplate on one of these battery boxes unless the watt-hour rating is at least half the drae, e.g., a Jackery 500 for a 1000w hotplate. That's why they make Coleman stoves!
John, Your explanation is very helpful. As you point out, it isn't simply whether a power station -- the Jackery or any other -- will run my electronic devices or electrical appliances, but *for how long*; that is what makes it practical. If it takes 7 to 12 hours to charge a power station to get one hour of portable power, then the cost of the power station in money, or the time and energy to keep the power station charged is too high. That cost (my time and energy) is the main reason I never bought one of these power stations (the other being concerns about build quality/reliability, customer service).
Now that Jackery has added technology to greatly reduce the recharge time of their power stations, I've finally decided to buy one -- the Jackery 300, perfect for my needs, I hope. The outstanding issue was not really understanding how long I'd be able to run my electronics before having to recharge the Jackery. Your explanation of how to calculate use, finally gives me clarity.
Though Jackery's battery technology might not be the latest and greatest, I think of them as I heard a RUclipsr say "the Toyota of power stations" -- well-made and reliable. So, I think I will be pleased.

I have found that my Jackery 240 will rum my Philips Dreamstation for 2 nights with the Philips 12v adapter, and for one night with the AC adapter, while also charging my tablet and phone. For me, it's been a useful device for car or moto camping. It's also a good backup for home.

I was disappointed that you did not mention the length of time you can go with the various amounts of watts a device uses. Yes, it will run my device with the right size Jackery, but for how long?

Thank you so much for this info. Bought my van n can’t afford anything else now, went in for a 2005 n came home with a 2012 but I love it. I got such a deal and the only thing I found wrong was 4 non matching tires and pretty worn. I was told due to high discount I had to take care of tires.

Most refrigerators 'pull' at least 45 watts . That means about 10 hours (NOT two days) of run time with a 500 - especially if you're needing to run or charge other, small items. To recharge fully from your car/van/12v you'll need to do more than just a bit of running around errands. IF you have run your 'jack' down to a very low level (like powering that fridge for 10 hrs) it will take as much as 11 or 12 HOURS to recharge from your vehicle's 12v. (7-8 hrs from a wall outlet)
If the Jackery's 500 is a bit too small yet 1000 more than you need.... if the 1000 is too expensive, too large or too heavy ....... Check out Bluetti's new 700w.
(no I don't work for them). It's a better/safer battery with the capacity for 2500 recharges to 80% (Jacks are rated at 500 recharges to 80%) . That EB 70 also charges in a little over 1/2 the time of the J-500's.
Accurate details are important when people are using the information in these videos to make major purchases.

Valid points (and the Bluetti stuff is very good), but remember that 12v fridges are only running about 1/3 of them time. I'll agree with you on the recharge times, but my stuff has NEVER run down that low - granted, I tend to be out quite a bit driving around and exploring (almost) every day - it's going to be different for someone sitting in the same spot day after day. We're all different, and a lot of this stuff is about finding out what works for our individual style of camping/traveling. More soon...safe travels!

I have a Jackery Explorer 290. I just bought a BougeRV 21 quart compressor fridge/freezer. I tested it this weekend and I think the results were excellent. My fridge says it consumes 45 watts on Eco mode and 60 watts on Max. I plugged it into my fridge and set the fridge at 3 degrees Celcius and set it to Eco mode. While the compressor is running the watts consumed varied slightly between 27 and 39 watts, significantly lower than the refrigerator information said it would use. No problem in my mind. During this test the ambient temperature in my house was 23 degrees C over night and 26 degrees C during the daytime hours. After 24 hours running the refrigerator the Jackery 290 still had 5% power left. I didn’t have the fridge full, just a few cans of beer in it for the test. For my needs this set up will more than enough as I will run the fridge from my truck while driving and only use the Jackery while away from the vehicle hiking or sightseeing, whatever and overnight when we are not staying in a motel. When staying in a motel I can plug the fridge in overnight. The 21 quart fridge is enough for my wife and I and is light enough to carry into the motels. Sure we could just use our cooler and buy ice but this is a lot easier and convenient for not a big price tag.
Hey Ricoman - BougeRv brand seems to be gaining popularity and are well rated. I think you're going to fine with that setup for 1-2 night trips. Get out there and enjoy some nature!!!!

FYI the pecron Portable Power Station E600LFP puts out 614Wh, and is only $299 (as of 20Aug2024). That's about half as much per Wh as a comparable Jackery. Best to shop around!
markabrice, that's a good point. While I've not gotten try that brand, I've been camping with VTOMAN and Aferiy power stations for the last few months, and they've been rock solid at very affordable prices. I've been surprised by how well some of these brands have caught up with the "big names". More soon...safe travels!

I have recently purchased a Jackery 1000, which should cover all my needs. I was also thinking of purchasing the solar panel, but having watched your channel I might just hang on & see if the charging & re-charging the Jackery doesn’t run my vehicle battery down to a point that it will not start. (I will carry a Jump start battery, just in case.) The only problem here is if I stay on the campsite without moving my vehicle, I think its about getting the right balance. Time will tell, this should be fun…😂😂

Very useful video! I've been trying to decide which Jackery to get for my needs and I think the small 240 will work fine. I probably won't get a solar panel to start with. What I'd like to see in a video: where can I find a good used minivan that is reasonably priced without going to a used car dealer? I can't seem to find any For Sale By Owner cars!!! Why is that? I don't trust used car dealers because I think I'll be paying too much for a minivan. Thanks!
I'd look At Craigslist first. They started charging $5 to list vehicles - and that got rid of a lot of the scams. (But also some of the selection). You can also sort by dealer/private owner. Avoid Carvana and Carmax as they are ridiculously overpriced. Cargurus.com is good too, or cars.com - as they tell you what kind of deal you're getting. Good/fair/great/etc. Facebook marketplace is an online cesspool- but if you can handle filtering scams, and dealing with the typical general public, it'll have the most vehicles available. I'd still start with Craigslist and go from there...

The difference in buying a van from a used dealership is that u know your gonna pay a little more for it, other than an individual owner, owners are trying to get the 'bluebook price' what the car is actually worth, a dealer is higher because there in the business of making money off of cars, here's the thing I learned recently, I just bought a Sienna mini van, I researched the best vans to get, they were Toyota sienna or a Honda Odyssey, then I started to see what the mileage was and price for the van, looking at the bluebook price first, then I started looking at vans from car lots and then private owners, mostly on MARKET PLACE ON FACEBOOK, and noticed the difference in what they were asking, private owners were asking much less than the dealership, BUT HERES THE DIFFERENCE, when you buy from a private owner, you will pay less ,but you take the chance of not being able to take the car back if it's a Lemon, your stuck with it, if you get it from a dealer, u can, according to that states' Lemon Law' take it back and they will fix it or refund all your money, that was how it is in Oklahoma anyway, another thing is, a dealership has a 5 star rating system, showing just how reliable there cars are, I went to a 5 star rated car lot, the van I got bluebooked at 3,300 they wanted 4,200 I got it for 3,900, if u haggle with them they will ALWAYS come down on the price, depending on how good a haggler u are:),I payed a little more for what I knew it was worth, but the ability to take it back was worth the peace of mind, I've had it for a month now, drove it 2500 miles already, and it's a good one, I know what it's like not to know where or how to start looking for a used car, I hope this helps, if u have any questions feel free to ask, good luck to you!!

I have the 290WH and it has the MPPT controller and the charge through charging. I just got it today to run a chest size cooler. It is working quite well so far but it is early yet. I bought it at Lowes for 268.00 after the 5% discount.

Current x voltage = Watts
In North America the household wall voltage is 120v. So for a 3A device using 120V the power in Watts would be 3x120=360 Watts.

I have a small one, a 160. Cost way more in Canada!! Don't plan to charge much with it, maybe my phone and a 7 w light Would the sizes and watts pertain to leisure battery sizes as well? Need a battery charged via the vehicle video Kevin!! 😁
The 160 is fine for what you're using it for. The 110 part of it is good for 100 watts, so that'll work for a small laptop or similar with a very low power draw. The Jackery160 should charge very quickly plugged into your cig lighter/12v just driving around a bit each day. More soon...stay safe!
I only have a 160 also. Got it Christmas a year ago, but I got it for less than $100 that why I got it. I tent camp and it works for my phone, my fan, and my coffee warmer. Sorry Canada's prices are so much higher.

100 watts does not equal 1 amp. This mis information might hurt people. Amps are watts/volts so it various a better way is 120 watts (at 120 volts) equals 1amp. I know people are gonna say “the 100 is simpler and easier” cool. It’s still wrong and depending on the situation you’d be either over estimating your needs or underestimating by 20% that’s a huge difference on the road.
Making the math simple for people to get the hang of how this stuff works. You and I both know we should be doing this based on about 118.7 , but that over complicates it a bit, eh?
@@BudgetTravelGuy it’s still just math, people carry calculators in their pockets now. I think under estimating needs by 20% could be harmful in the long run. I do agree it’s simpler but I don’t think you have to be an electrician to wrap your head around these things

Thank you for helping with the differences because I want power a CPAP and boil water. I am worried about fires in California and what I need to have on hand. Power would be off so I would need solar panels.
Snuffy, in your situation (Cali area) larger is certainly going to be better. I'd go 500 at a minimum to run your CPAP a couple of nights ( amzn.to/3rWGvdP ). Boiling water would be better done with propane and a cheap camp stove, as it would zap a LOT of power (even from a larger power station) trying to do that with something electrical. @@BudgetTravelGuy I purchased the Jackery 1500 with the 4 solar panels. I have a sunny deck to hang out the solar panels. It will have to work for my CPAP and whatever I want to heat up. For backup, I did buy a SOLO camp stove too with a light tea pot. WHen I go on walks I collect sticks. Now I just have to buy a dolly to move it around. Its too heavy for me to carry around and move it from inside to use and outside to connect to the solar panels. I am looking for an portable electric burner. that hopefully does not use to much power. Thank you for your help.

I use the 300 to power 2 small guitar amplifiers for as long as 3 hours at a time, uses less than 30% of the charge.

Very clear explanation. What about the hours of use? My CPAP uses 3.5 amps or 350 watts. Does this mean it uses 350 watts for one hour of use? Or do I need to multiply 350 watts by the hours of uses each night? Thanks.
My CPAP has a DC converter box. Do I to match the input on the box that is 1.5 amp 115 volt or the output that says 3.5 amp 24 volt?

Scott, using 2 500's vs 1 1000 would give you just about equal capacity (at the same total price), but you'd be limited in what devices you could plug into the smaller ones (500 watt device vs a 1000 watt device). The main thing is knowing what you want to try to run BEFORE you buy the battery so you have one with enough oooomph! More soon...safe travels!
I thought of this so I could charge one at work while the one at the SUV keeps the fan running for the pets. (or a heater)..I like that the SUV is small and easier to manage temperature wise than a bigger van

Thanks, I like your overall video, but I don't think you made it clear that the watt estimate shortcut (watts = 100 x amps) aplies to house power (110v). Not low voltage like 12v refrigerators , led lights, or other 12v and 5v things were the amps would be much higher for the same watts. Thanks again.

I’ve heard that Jackery is currently working on a 2000 version. Would it be better to have couple smaller (lighter so easier to carry, can have one dedicated to something, i.e. fridge) or one bigger?
I've not seen any references to that, but anything is possible. 1000w is going to be able to power almost anything you want to throw at it - at least for short bursts (power tools, small microwave, etc).

@@BudgetTravelGuy I guess the most important thing I’m concerned about would be a small refrigerator, and a fan for air circulation at night. I would also be recharging my iWatch, iPad and iPhone, but those don’t take much juice. Second question: if the Jackery is run down completely during the night, how long would I need to drive the car in order to charge it back up again? I know that probably depends on the size of the Jackery.
So if you only have a 100 watt solar panel, will you be able to power up all those items you’ve talked about depending on their individual wattage?
300w powerstation, 100w solar panel. Given good sun you think it could keep a 12v cooler fridge going all long weekend? I can’t afford a 500w unit so I’m hoping high!
A 300w power station should power the fridge through the night, but you'll need to recharge the powerstation each day. (This can be done by connecting the solar panel, OR while driving from one place to another with the power station plugged into the 12v accessory port in your van.) Does the higher watts last longer than the lower watts? For example, if i ran a fan on jackery300 all night long and it lasted 12hrs. If i do that to the jackery1000, will it last longer? Thank you for explaining the watts and amp by the way. I never get that but now i feel like a pro 😅.

Why are they still using lithium batteries and not using lithium iron batteries. A little more weight but battery will last longer and is cheaper?
