  • Three Steam Locos join the Carlisle Variety!
    Galatea,
    Leander,
    45212,
    A MOD train.
    25 & 26 07 23
    Filmed over two days.
    On the first, I went out to Wetherall to see the Carlisle Yard to Tyne Yard engineer's train before heading to Lazonby to see Galatea / Sierra Leone with the northbound Dalesman.
    Back at Carlisle I watched Galatea prepare its train for the return journey via the WCML as well as other trains passing through.
    The surprise highlight was 45212, a Black 5, heading from Fort William to Steamtown at Carnforth with a support coach. Presumably it has not a lot to do with the issues around slam door stock on the Jacobite. However 45212 did appear on the Northern Belle on 29ht July.
    On the following day Leander took excursion stock to Edinburgh for a series of excursions in Scotland, in lieu of Tornado. I'd expected it to pass through Platform 1, but instead it went through P3.
    A bonus that evening was a Ministry of Defence working by GBRf from Glen Douglas on the West Highland Line to Kineton.

    A most enjoyable selection, thank you. Regarding railway architecture, that's a very attractive overbridge at Wetheral, which made for a timeless look with the absence of the overhead power 'clobber'.

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam 11 месяцев назад +1

      I was thinking that. A bridge just like it at Garforth has just been taken down to make room for overhead clobber between York and Leeds. I think it is going to a railway somewhere rather than scrapped

    7:25 - that's how I remember steam locomotives leaving a platform rather than huge clouds of steam.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  11 месяцев назад

      I think it warm enough for the steam not to be as visible. Even on narrow gauge now they drain the cylinders before and during starting.

    Magnificent views on the steamers. Just a superlative opportunity! Also, I don't know why, but the double 90s Freightliner freight train seemed to be one of the more colorful container trains you have posted in recent memory. Great video as always!

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks Anthony. One or two of the container trains especially southbound do carry a colourful mix of containers, serving particular ports. Others are on contract to particular logistics companies and get either "inland" containers or ones for a specific shipping line.

      Thanks Tim. Partly my own fault for not working things out myself. The view from platform 4 does give a better approach shot.

    As always Les, great captures - but ive often wondered what the cause for DBS hauling FL locos and stock would be and Vise versa? We see FL hauling a rake of DB ballast wagons ?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  11 месяцев назад +1

      There are three trains here in each direction moving network Rail stuff around. One is DRS, a freightliner and a dB. Freightliner hitch dead locos to them instead of scheduling stock moves.

    A lovely bridge at the beginning and the open country view of Galatea was nice. Are the Swift parcel trains in service now they seemed to be intensely doing route learning and then disappeared

      theres only one driver thats the chap that own the whole coboodle, he takes parcels from mossend to birmingham then drives back early hours for the next days delivery he owns just the one set of 321s good luck to him 👍

      @@sydwoods.woodsendjunction9492 They did a series of runs to York where I was shown round the unit by the chap who owns the company. He gave me a few goodies. Seems he was a class 91 driver. There was a driver on the unit as well, both were enthusiastic about the company and said they were starting on the WCML in May I think it was and hopefully on the ECML by 2024. It looks an ambitious plan but one that could work given the rapid growth in parcel deliveries. Thanks for your reply.

      Varamis Rail commenced service some months ago . I looked them up and they are a small company with a few drivers but only the one route at the moment.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@sydwoods.woodsendjunction9492 Syd they are a bigger company than a one man band if you look them up. Just enough drivers for the run back and forth but plenty of people at the top.

    For steam locos to turn in carlisle do they need to return to upperby and then switch onto the single line to the newcastle/leeds line then carry on up the currock goods lines that runs next to the old denton holme/caldew goods lines, then run around on to the maryport line at the old currock railway depot and reverse down that line back into the station? Because if they leave to upperby face first, they'll return face first won't they?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  11 месяцев назад +1

      They have two options - Station - Upperby - London Road Jct - Station or Station - Upperby - Bog Jct, Currock Jct - Station

    • @xxfyrezgamerxx6279
      @xxfyrezgamerxx6279 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways I didn't know they could switch to London road junction, only thought they could go down bog junction then to currock junction then into the station, thanks for letting me know.
