Fantastic Train Variety at Carlisle despite Chaos due to Floods.
16 July 24
What a Fantastic day at Carlisle Station!
I'd expected some interesting trains today with one-off trains planned from Fort William to Carnforth, Long Marston to Kilmarnock, Carlisle Yard to Marchwood and of course the Pendle Dalesman from Lancaster to Carlisle out and back behind steam via Preston, Hellifield and the S&C. A network rail test train was planned to be in the station all day too.
The Pendle Dalesman was hauled by a Black 5 again - long may it continue!
The weather proved better in Carlisle than forecast with some showers for an hour or so in the early afternoon only. Beautiful lighting towards the end of the day. What wasn't apparent untill we actually listened to the announcements fully was the flooding - turns out it was just south of Tebay mostly affecting the Up line. The passenger company operations managers got into action. Avanti allowed most northbound trains to run, cancelling only one or two north of Preston. They cancelled two at Carlisle and returned them to Glasgow in service. TransPennine appeared to wait and run the trains south to terminate at Preston.
The three extra freights were all due to run after 7pm, so an excuse to be there for the pair of 90s heading to Daventry. As it happened, both the West Coast Railways from Fort William was early as was the train from Long Marston with an ex-Transport for Wales Class 769 presumably going for refurbishment.
Five class 37s made for an interesting day from Colas, West Coast and Rail Operations Group.
Apologies I didnt caption the Network Rail Test Train 37s - but you can see the numbers and name, I think.

Is there staff working inside the red mail trains or are they just carrying mail. Fine assortment of stock again.. many thanks. Dave Coventry.
Lovely variety Les, and five 37's, and a steamer!
Many thanks!
Les, your videos could never be too long. Thank you.
Thanks
you always have the best train content, everytime time i search train spotting i cannot find good videos until yours pop up.
Wow, thanks!
A Black 5 and five Class 37's on the same day, what more could we ask for.
Thanks for this one Leslie.🙂👍💗
Certainly was a great day
The variety of locomotives you have at Carlisle is exceptional!! And today’s video shows FIVE of my favourite Class 37 locomotives. GREAT!!!!
Many thanks!
Talk about rain, I had to go out in the afternoon and the few spots of rain as I set off turned torrential on the way back, I was drenched when I got home, a long time since I got that wet. Good to see the Black 5 out again Tangmere must have a bigger problem than I thought. Great day for 37's as well
We were lucky that despite the forecast for an afternoon of rain the showers in Carlisle didn't last
Great video and what a day for you. Loved the shot of 37 57 and 70 . Hope u managed to stay dry and kept warm with Citadel best coffee
Thanks - I rarely get wet!
Another very interesting video. Well done Les.
Many thanks!
The weather has been a bit nasty down south, too!! The great thing is that we didn’t have flooding here in Hertfordshire!!
Good to hear
Nice mix again, Les... other than bird thinking nothing can phase him. lol
Thanks. Those birds were all over the tracks
What l love about Les he tells you what's happening bless you
Appreciate that
I’m not a lover of diesel locomotives, but I understand their place in the history of the railway. Had there not been a diesel locomotive, the electric trains we have today would never have come about!! My first love, as far as trains are concerned, is the original. The steam locomotive.
Remember there was a battery electric loco built around 60 years before a diesel and other prototypes before Diesel or other internal combustion engines were used.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I apologise for the slight need for my need to update my knowledge!! To some of us, minor come slightly earlier than to others. I was born with brain damage due to having to be towed out of my mother!!
Don't worry about it - just sit back and enjoy the videos
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thank you Leslie!! I always enjoy your videos because they’re very interesting, informative and entertaining.
Thats the main thing :o)
Great video!! I wish that all RUclips videos were as interesting to watch.
Thanks very much
What an amazing day for the trainspotter! But I can imagine it must have been a real headache for the railway staff sorting out the “confusion and delay” as the Fat controller calls it. A thought hit me while watching this. Has there ever been a day you have filmed when all trains were on time? Nice to see the black five again.
Thanks. Most days things are pretty much to time. But they are less interesting!
Some excellent shots of the Colas 37 & 70, and then the T'bird 57 in the middle. Is the paper mill a new working for Colas? Can't recall seeing it previously.
Black 5 back again. Excellent!
Perhaps Royal Mail will use that private Varmis Rail service?
Thanks. No, the working to Workington is a long established train. Tanks out to Workington on a Tuesday and return on Thursday.
I think that's the 1st time I've seen anything moving on what I refer to as 'Thunderbird siding'. Anything else has been the Thunderbird start-ups.
Its where they park the railhead treatment tanks come August before they get used
Bom dia lelier excelente video amei movimentação de trem 5:57
Thanks!
A wonderful video Les lots of awesome footage loved the zooming on the black 5 , superb Les
thanks for sharing take car a t b syd👍
Thanks
Great video Les. A very busy day for you. Question for you. Are there many female freight train drivers?
More ladies in the cab than you imagine.
Crazy!!
Happy days!
nice Video
Thanks
It wouldn't right be right if there wasn't a stream train lol xx
Well sometimes they are just part of the everyday scenery! Thanks for watching
