5th edition rangers were very quickly identified as the weakest class, and by a wide margin. Eventually WotC released “revised ranger” in an “unearthed arcana”. This revised version is significantly better than the original version in practically every way, but there are a couple catches.
Firstly, since “revised ranger” is still technically unofficial, you can’t use it at the adventurers’ league and some of the more purist DMs will disallow it.
Secondly, revised ranger has its own set of archetypes called “conclaves” and the base archetypes are incompatible with revised ranger and vice versa. So, if you’re eyeballing a new ranger archetype, you’ll have to use the old classic ranger, rather than the objectively better revised version.
Generally speaking, you should always be using revised ranger if you have the option. You’ll only want to utilize the base ranger if you’re specifically wanting to use a non-revised ranger archetype. Even then, simply taking revised ranger is usually the statistically stronger choice.

A small correction: At about 17:00 you mentioned that Hunter's Mark adds to MELEE weapon damage which is not true. It adds to ALL weapon damage.

“Stealthy, staby goodness awaits” has never meant more than here. Thank you for that.

Nice to see the UA Revised Ranger get a nod, as I don't see it get mentioned much these days. I'm currently playing a UA Beast Conclave ranger, and while it is very useful and very powerful, it can often feel overcomplicated and inelegantly designed. It still uses the flimsy skeleton of the original PHB's animal companion stat blocks, but seeks to make it viable by tacking on a bunch of buffs and bonuses that can be a pain to keep track of. It brings in new concepts that these beasts were never designed around and do not possess, such as Hit Die and Proficiency Bonus, and in the end you basically have to reverse-engineer a new creature based on your best guess of what it "should have," sometimes right down to "What stat does this thing use to attack with?"
I have a wolf companion that uses Dexterity as its Attack and Damage bonuses, but uses Strength to determine the Save DC to knock a target prone -- because that's how the math seems to work out, if you try to figure out why a basic wolf NPC is the way it is, assuming it has a base Proficiency Bonus of +2, which is never stated (but somehow implied). It's a total mess. A usable, doable mess, but I can definitely see why it never became official material in a published book. It feels like it belongs in a completely different game system than 5e.

Ranger was my favorite class until 5e...didn't play 4th so I can't comment to that edition. They were the wild animal companion having roguish warrior and master of fort and fortifying. They had skills of rogues, fighters, and druids wrapped up into one package helping the be the stealthy elite warrior badass helping get the back of the thief (wasn't rogue at the time) as they infiltrate areas helping the other party members get to where they were going. Best part, ALL Rangers had animal companions. In fact they could have a massive troupe of companions of all types. There's wording from the Druid Circle of the Shepherd that was take right out of the Ranger class from 2nd edition which was communicating with wildlife freely.
5e neutered the Ranger...yet I find so many people out there unwilling to allow Tasha's or the Revised believing it's a good class, and I don't know where they get that thinking. The Beast Master from Tasha's is a huge fix, but as I said, I've been running into a few people (over 3 under 20) who won't allow Tasha's at their table. I personally believe Ranger is better but needs a complete overhaul to get all the dings out. When most classes are shining from the time they are made up to their highest level. Another one I think needs an overhaul is Monk...again I feel like I'm in the minority with that.

My latest swarmkeeper had a murder of crows and ravens. It was even more entertaining when the dm had us swap characters and another player got to rp.

I am playing my first campaign, and I am running a half orc ranger. I went for the gloomstalker sub class and so far, I am loving the class/race combination. I can fight long-range and short-range, aid fallen team memebers using cure wounds, and relentless endurance is a life saver, very literally, it lets you get back up with a 1hp after being downed 😂

@SkullSplitter Dice Ranger Cleric is likely the easiest and most common. Deciding on the optimal Cleric Domain is interesting. Ranger Sorcerer could be interesting but will will be ASI heavy. I really liked how you explained why you should go even levels of Paladin to maximize your Sorcerer spell slots. I had not seen that explained so clearly before .

There's about as many versions of the ranger as there are versions of D&D. Unfortunately I think that they hosed the 5th edition ranger pretty badly. I'm glad that they fixed it in Tasha's. There's no way I was going to play one with the basic D&D Rules. There's just no comparison between the ranger and the fighter. Heck even taking a fighter with a level of druid would be better than playing a ranger. Just saying. Anyway thanks for the heads up with regards to the ranger. Patrick never fails to entertain me.

I'm trying out human gloomstalker with the Sharpshooter and Crossbow Expert feats.
I usually just use the favored foe to add 1d4 damage, and bonus action off hand attack. Using sharpshooter causes me to miss more, but when I hit, I hit hard. I'm enjoying it.
I'll look into the more rogue like features to see how to play those in the game...

I've wanted to play a Fey Wanderer ranger/Scout rogue multiclass since I first got ahold of Tasha's. Between Dreadful Strikes, Favored Foe (or Hunter's Mark) and Sneak Attack, I think it could really be a decent DPR build ... plus you get all the utility of playing a ranger and four levels of Expertise by 4th level if you go rogue-3/ranger-X ... though it might be better to put off some rogue levels 'til I at least get Extra Attack. I would want to start out as a rogue, however, for the extra skill point. 😈
Not sure I agree about Primal Awareness being "less flavorful" than Primeval Awareness. Honestly, I think that the bonus spells from the newer feature are quite flavorful, and they make the ranger a bit more druidic than most earlier versions of the class. Also, it just kicks ass to (eventually) get five extra spells per day without spending a spell slot, and I can certainly see using Speak with Animals, for one, every day for intelligence gathering. 😉
Finally, since Favored Foe so closely resembles Hunter's Mark, it could be argued, depending on the number of combat encounters the DM throws at you in a day, that Favored Foe could be foregone in order to take Favored Enemy for the (admittedly circumstantial) benefits it gives you, including the extra languages. Personally, I wouldn't do that (I'd rather choose not to learn Hunter's Mark in a combat-light campaign), but I've seen the possibility raised.
