Couple years ago, Alex Valle walked into my bar. A relaxing, dimly lit, tropical atmosphere in a Tiki bar and without skipping a beat after greeting customers entering the small intimate setting of our bar as I usually do, I recognized him and blurted out, "Mr. Street Fighter himself is in my bar?!" It gave him a chuckle, and I bought him and his friend their first round. Random, but sometimes I think about that.
@@Kelberoth Definitely! I'm not one for celebrity frivolities, and I'm not pro gamer by any means, but an avid fan of the FGC community nonetheless, and I recognize greatness where it's due. That guy (along with many others) practically paved the way for pro gaming for what it is today and I love that. I think any kid who grew up in the 90's playing video games loves to see where games have gone and the community in it.
Bonchan didn't even think about those command grabs. He was too scared of Hugo's SPD, that Alex didn't try in the whole match, using Bonchan's fear against him.
The simple fact that Alex not once used Hugos normal or EX Press is what led to this win. Bonchan was constantly on the watch and whenever Alex was too close he would jump back expecting the command grab. That's also why he got caught by the meat squasher in the opening of the second match. Sometimes a grappler characters strongest ability is to leave the fear of the command grab and not use it.
8:40 Alex Valle actually talked about this set before in an interview. He said in this situation he wanted to bait the jump by threatening command grab, thats why he just sat there, he was trying to react to a jump. Apparently it was something he did alot with a ton of success. He truly postulated Bon Chans possibilities What a legend
The reason Alex knew Bonchan would jump in the final round was because he'd hit Bonchan multiple times with triple claps, so he only did 2 claps and antecipated Bonchan would jump to try to escape from the third. That's when he just dashed and Megaton Pressed him to oblivion. He wasn't reading Bonchan's mind, he was PROGRAMMING it. Bonchan looked like a flawlessly programmed Java app.
I was working at a bar when this match happened. I was upset I had to work that evo weekend. So I kept making excuses to step outside. Pretty sure my co-workers thought I was on drugs. I happned to step out right at the Character select and saw Alex pick Hugo and thought "Why?! I have to watch this." I was screaming inside my car phone in hand. One of the only matches not top 16 that I got to see live.
This was the peak hype for ultra and mvc3. I remember watching this. I think this is the moment infiltration downloaded the Hugo strat and went on to use it at Canada Cup.
Bro I love how hype Smug gets for this match. Man, if you were watching this live you were even more excited cause you had no idea what was coming. One of the greatest SF4 matches to this day. Love Valle.
Hey SMUG, I wanted to say thanks for the advice you gave me a few weeks ago in your community tab. thanks to you, I finally made it to Silver rank. it ain't much but I ain't hard stuck anymore. it's only up from here thanks to you
Oh man I remember those claps. Hugo was out there making The Hulk look weak. Watching these matches again brings a soothing wave of nostalgia and all around better times. Back when me and da boiz treated EVO like most people treat The Super Bowl.
It's always really annoyed me that no one seems to have addressed James and Skisonic's comments regarding Valle "dropping his combos". It seems obvious to me that he was ending the combo early in the hope Bonchan would be holding up back and he was pumping for Ultra 2. He tries it a few times throughout this match and landed it at least once.
Listen, when you're watching the world's best Sagat and one of the finest modern Street fighter players in the world being trounced by an old man's pocket Hugo, it's understandable that the commentators aren't gonna get that right in the moment whilst being confronted by pure sexual energy. It's not worth being annoyed over, we all know how good Valle is.
@@Giraffinator Hey! I'm an "old man", I take offense to that statement lol also yeah, annoyed probably too strong a word, just meant never seen or heard anyone acknowledge it and was hoping Smug would pick up on it to be honest
When I was a shorty back in the 90s I would read EGM mag and see the results of some "California" gaming tournament and always see the name "Alex Valle" in no less than 3rd place. I was like who the hell is Alex Valle? And since when did gaming tournaments exist?! 😂 We didnt have any tournaments like that in Chicago back then. But I never forgot that name because it always came up.
Tokido made the best match in the history of KOFXIII in Brazil against Kléber Yagami at TretaArmagedon in 2012. It was the best in Japan, against Brazilian hope!
Japan players: Hugo is pretty low tier. USA, led by Alex Valle at the front: He's alright actually. For real though, they discounted hugo so quickly and I love seeing them absolutely get punished for it.
Alex Valle not only played flawlessly, but also dumped all the pressure of winning on his oponent by picking a character that was suposed to be the rock to his paper. Only this rock was too heavy for that paper to hold.
Bro maybe you can explain the technical aspect in details, like why people despise to even use Hugo when he was such a big problem in SF4 (as Alex proved it)? Like isn't it possible Hugo be mad spam clapping the entire match even? I look forward to your tech analysis bro.
Honestly I think the only reason he picked Hugo here is because that’s the character he had been streaming a lot during that time and having tons of fun with. I mean it’s not like he was expecting to win EVO or anything. Sometimes just playing for fun is more important than anything else!
How about the SoCal Regionals Valle vs Daigo. It might seem boring to those that don't understand Street Fighter, but that would be a good reason for a breakdown. You didn't see many combos outside a hit confirm into super, mainly because they didn't give each other a chance. They kept each other out and didn't let each other in. It was Street Fighter in it's PUREST form.
i remember that around that time Alex streamed a LOT using Hugo. my guess it was just... "eh" might as well play the character no one knows how to fight against

"There's good matches, there's great matches....

"Doesn't Sagat beat grapplers?" Good thing he didn't try a SINGLE command grab lmao
You forgot about the running command grab at the start of the 2nd match 😶🌫
Bonchan didn't even think about those command grabs. He was too scared of Hugo's SPD, that Alex didn't try in the whole match, using Bonchan's fear against him.

What a legend
i love how a single spd was never thrown
Still crazy how Valle beat Bonchan with a move that he never used even once
Underrated comment. Here’s my like, brother.
i remember this live everyone was so hype. a bad match up turned into the best sagat at the time being bodied
Oh man SMUG reacting to USF4 famous matches, this gonna be a good day
Yo Phoenix Wright is a fan of Smug??? That's new for me lol
Hugo has been my fav for a minute. Yeah hes hard to use but that elbow to the face is so satisfying after a hard day at work
One of the most memorable fights in the history of SFIV. Insane props to Valle! People were shocked at how easily he dominated a supposed 3-7 matchup.
The reason Alex knew Bonchan would jump in the final round was because he'd hit Bonchan multiple times with triple claps, so he only did 2 claps and antecipated Bonchan would jump to try to escape from the third. he was clearly baiting that jump since the beginning and never really punishing it on purpose. it was a setup the whole time

Congratulations!
I love this match. Come back to it every now and then.
The commentators went to angry and confused to riding his meat 😂
Thank you!! I requested this a couple of months ago. Keep excelling at greatness!
Homie, you broke down this classic match with the greatest of ease. I'd love to see more.
These are the videos I would watch back in the day when I would look for Smug videos till I found your channel lol
I love seeing stuff like this! It’s like when Rangchu won the Tekken EVO tourney as Panda. Absolutely amazing!!
This whole evo has a ton of great matches over all the games. Prolly my favorite evo I’ve ever watched.

Surprised you haven't showed this yet! It gave me goose bumps when I first saw it.
Yoo you need to revisit more of these classic USF4 matches man
My inspiration. Thank you lord Alex Valle ✊💙
The Gagapa vs Infexious set was legendary too
Hi smug. Greetings from Perú. I like your reaction to final between pr balrog and infiltration on ncr 2014 I think. When he won.
Valle is always hype, loved his Evo24 Twelve gameplay. It was absolutely cracked. Ofc Twelve ain't in the winning bracket but it was so cool.
I needed that to start my day
This was a good choice of match for you. Your reactions are awesome.
At 9:02 when he said "Right there, you gotta guess". I felt that so hard. 😭
😂😂
Bonchan is my hero. But Mr.Streetfighter is a living legend, and one must always remember to respect the classics.
Hey smug, why are you holding a ken player in your arms in this video??
great match to look back on, fun video

Don't jump to Hugo Bonchan don't jump.... Great vídeo smug 😃
The next match I want to see your reaction on is Infiltration VS PR Balrog, "the Hakan come back" from EVO 2013.
I need to see Smug reaction to Daigo vs momochi at stunfest, or the whole Evo 2015 top 8
Alex Valle not only played flawlessly, but also dumped all the pressure of winning on his oponent by picking a character that was suposed to be the rock to his paper. Only this rock was too heavy for that paper to hold.
Why is he holding a moki?
You gotta do a review on John Choi vs daigo at evo. Art filmed it that match was legendary.

Been subbed for 3yrs best 3yrs since haven't changed it probably never will
How about Daigo vs. Momochi @ Stunfest, or PR Balrog vs. Infiltration @ EVO
What's the lateset console this game got ported too?
Daigo vs Arturo was another legendary SF4 match. You should do that next.
No Smug, you are the ultimate GOAT!!!
Man I love smug and alex valle and bonchan
I remember watching Alex play t hawk versus Chun-Li and every time he did a low fierce he would say panty grab panty grab panty grab LOL
Valle is my favorite of all time of the old generation. By far.
