The part was 1.250 inch with a + 0 - tolerance. It was the casing for the space shuttle solid rocket booster segments. This was a forging that could have absolutely 0 defects. It was ground to size and if it went undersized it was scrapped. I had never seen any part rejected for size. Those machinist were amazing.
Years ago I worked for a place that had a vertical lathe that was 18 ft on center, yes foot. It was used in making nuclear reactor and rocket engine parts. The machinist said the outside rim of the face plate was turning at 35 MPH. Makes you realize how powerful of machine it was.
I completed an apprenticeship at HM Dockyard Devonport UK. They had a much bigger lathe than this one, complete tail shafts for warships coupled together and machined as one.
At the former Charleston Naval Shipyard, SC which is private enterprise now; is a 120 foot between centers lathe. This lathe was designed to machine 90 ton and heavier prop shafts. I think this is bigger than any of the lathes on RUclips.
All naval shipyards have lathes MUCH larger than this one, however, this lathe is much larger than it looks in this video. Understand the operators are in a pit beside the machine. The machines in the shipyards are laid out different. NNSY Shop 38.
I literally said holy shit as you panned out. Looked like a small little regular old lathe until that point! I thought the title and the bit about 25 and 36m was just a hook to get me to watch.. god damn son!
In the 1980s, I went for a tour of Firth Browns (now called Forgmasters) in Sheffield,England ,they had lathes that would make this one look small, the two largest lathes were positioned with the tail stocks back to back so they could put one large job into both lathes
Forgemasters bought a used Farrell lathe from America 300t between centers. I also saw a similar size one at Alsthoms plant in Trafford park Manchester 350t betwen centres - used for finishing completed steam turbine rotors. Turning the rotor from vertical to hoizontal using soft endless slings and 2 overhead cranes was scary....
corsagafa many moons ago I saw a lathe where the operator was sitting in a cab on the tool post.... also a friend of mine used to repair lathes and he showed me a piece of swarf that was stuck in the saddle of a lathe in the UK it was 2" by 1/4" in a coil about 12" in diameter...
MyChannel3 I used to work at GD in Quincy. One of my friends was an inside machinist and he rode on a moving scaffold basically which was easily 6 feet off the floor. THAT was a huge lathe. So I know what you mean, this is NOT the largest lathe, not by any means.LOL
thanks for the video i guess, coromant is selling toolbits as thick as thick as your tailstock quill by the way. Like you know how the toolbit on a small lathe is maybe 1" thick in the Z axis? That's the kind of support it has. The chips are so fat they can be flattened back into plate. you can see the coromant video on youtube
This one is big. It is not the biggest, not in turnable diameter, not in swing diameter, nor in lenght. The longest one was built by Wohlenberg in Germany. It was 68m long and for shipparts as well. It was grinded after it was set up beginning from the spindlestock to the tailstock-end. Even it's diameters were far bigger. But this is big. So have fun with it, as long as you are the turner and you push the buttons, right.
What is the difference of something being the biggest or the longest? You left foot looks longer than the right one, but the right plantar is definitiv bigger than the left one. Resulting, that you still always buy your shoes of the same size?
You want indicator if its the biggest or the longest? if your lathe don't use hydrostatic support, its probably not. Big tools have no choice but to support themselves like that, thats how heavy they are, its not possible any other way.
Stuart West You are a fucking idiot. Aircraft prop shaft lathe is bigger than a ship prop shaft lathe. Lets think about this for a second. Ships carry aircraft, not the other way around.
I don't belive. Ask your Southbee first to pour the oil in a glas, use the propeller shaft as a cocktail stirrer and then drink it without touching the olive.
Trust me, this may be a larger than an average lathe, but it's nowhere near the largest. In my apprenticeship, I was shown a picture of a lathe so large, a man was walking around on a tool post that had to be at least 8'×8' square!!!
So if there is a machine that can take on objects 35 m tall, wide and high, it would be smaller. Using the same logic again, anything 37m or longer is bigger, even if it were to only take objects max 50cm across. - You really insist on length as the only relevant metric for size?
wiki.answers.com/Q/Which_is_the_biggest_lathe_in_the_world This than must be the second largest. I don't know if the named one from Wohlenberg still exists.
I've been a machinist for 27 years and I can appreciate that. That is incredible!!!!
+Terry Loveless I've been a Machinist for 24 years, and I love this machine.

It's exciting seeing the biggest lathe in the world. This is my 6th one this week!
Go big or go home! I love the most examples of things and the thought that we can push technology to someday go even further.
Finally, the new spare crank shaft for my Nissan is almost done!

Run time for roughing that part has been estimated to about 2 weeks non-stop.

+Thats the one I mentioned in my post. I served my time at Metrovicks from 1960 to 65

I work for General Electric and they have lathes that dwarf this one.

When you have to shovel 3000 pounds of chips
Just get an electromagnet on the front of a frontloader
@@Ms.Nightshade what are you gonna do when it's stainless
Our old Gisholt is 65' bed but not much swing. We spaced it up to around 50-52" swing.
holy set screws.

Is this the lathe they use to make toothpicks for Chuck Norris?
that is one big strong centre to support all that weight.
Pra onde vai uma peça tão grande 😮
As a watchmakers apprentice; this feels intimidating...
Very cool though
Need some longer videos😎
No Aloris Quick Change tool post for that?
What are they even machining, drive shafts for ships or something?
When the tool holder is bigger than the whole normal lathe... Holy macaroni!
What is the difference of something being the biggest or the longest?
You left foot looks longer than the right one, but the right plantar is definitiv bigger than the left one.

"Fuck we overshot by a tenth. Scrap it."

How is this the biggest lathe in the world? Ever been to a shipyard?
Again, what is "big"? This definety is the longest and this is from a ship yard. Thanks for commenting.
I see your point. I'd consider Biggest by Swing
Axel Fibro my biggest lathe i work with was 12m long and hat a 2,5m chuck...
no quick tool post? wouldnt buy
Hey! I worked at G.E. Too! Chicago. . .
Aircraft propeller shaft lathe, ours is bigger. Just got a tourni tacchi installed.
Ok, but the plane still gotta be quite big... You have that 1km diameter "Tourni Tacchi" installed?
Stuart West You are a fucking idiot. Aircraft prop shaft lathe is bigger than a ship prop shaft lathe. Lets think about this for a second. Ships carry aircraft, not the other way around.
Does it not sag in the middle?
what is with the stability
Biggest is the swing and length.
I don't belive. Ask your Southbee first to pour the oil in a glas, use the propeller shaft as a cocktail stirrer and then drink it without touching the olive.
I have worked on bigger ones....
Bet the pay is really good
no water cooling needed?
+StuttgartHD Part of this size has incredible heat capacity.
Think it has powerfeed? lol...

Where i’m at we only use 4 screws but you got like 30 lol

Doesn't look biggest. May be longest. I have seen a lathe where the operator has to climb up ladder to get in to control room.
Ohhhh Bollocks ! 0.002" under......................."Welderrrrrs "
Wait to measure it again in the afternoon after its had time to warm up a little. You'll get your .002 and then some on a part that size.
cool video. they're just Jealous that theirs isn't as big as yours
36m - I think it is the longest :)

Thats some piss poor lighting for a machine shop.
might be the longest but not the biggest
Wowsa, that's a lotta gibbs.
Not the fastest in the world... This looks like the job might be done by Christmas... 2023!
Don't know much about speeds and feeds, do you?
Brian Gillis totally agree, gotta love the peanut gallery sometimes.
not the biggest might be the longest
Honda foreman trx fw400
Ha!
My Southbend 9" is bigger than that!
It eats 15 trillion barrel oil tanker propshafts for breakfast.
So it tells me, anyway.
Haha!!!
