    ________
    ABOUT CLARE:
Clare Connelly is the bestselling author of more than one hundred angsty, passionate romance novels. Having self-published her first book in 2014, by the end of that year, she was an Amazon All-Star in the US and UK and has since sold millions of copies of her books. She continues to self-publish and also writes her trademark romances for Harlequin and Tule.
Clare has lived and breathed romance for as long as she could remember. As a child, she adored fairy tales and Disney movies, as a teen it was all about romance novels: anything from Mills & Boon (which she consumed voraciously) to Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer and Jilly Cooper.
In 2023, alongside three other bestselling romance writers, Clare launched the How to Write Academy, a one-stop shop for aspiring genre writers.
Clare met her own real life hero at the tender age of eighteen. Clare lives near the sea in South Australia. When she isn't running kids to after school sports activities, listening to political podcasts or experimenting with French recipes, she's writing, thinking about writing, or wishing she were writing.

I'm always amazed by authors who have the ability to come up with enough plots to write so many books in a year! Also, I am so happy I came across this podcast because it has helped me with my own writing craft and the side benefit is being introduced to so many authors. It tickles me that Clare Connelly finds inspiration from Georgette Heyer. Many authors in the romance genre know who Georgette Heyer is, but it still makes me happy when someone refers to her.

Great interview! It's always a bit weird to hear those early success stories, but then you think: Clare must have done something really really right from the start. Especially the blurb writing and changing during pre-order sounded fascinating. So I would love to throw my hat in the ring to win the How-to-selfpublish course. Following up with the mail now...

I want to be inspired, but it's kind of depressing. I'm busting my gut to build a newsletter list, build a street team, writing in series, learning ads, releasing every 3 months... to crickets. While I've given away thousands of copies of book 1 and when I set book 2 to free, I gave away over a thousand copies in a day, I've only had (exactly!) 100 sales in 3 months and 40 preorders for book 3. There's no way to come out of this without feeling inadequate. I'm trying so hard. I just don't know what else to do to get this moving. I badly need this to work and nothing seems to move the needle.

It IS hard to keep the faith gray_mara Join some author groups, get some feedback on your published work (and it's "packaging") and keep going. 40 preorders is REALLY good when you're starting out. Many of us were in the single digits for preorders for a looooong time (((hugs)))
