Knowing where your book (or story idea before you’ve written it) fits into the market, and how it stacks up against the packaging (cover, pricing, categories etc), for the current top sellers in your specific genre is really important. I mean, if mashing genres that hard got them in the top sellers...might as well. Bravo to them for finding a way to double dip

This is very interesting and timely for me. Last night I got really scared about finding my audience. I'm within a couple of chapters of finishing. I felt very inspired to write it and it's my debut novel. I come from a theatrical background. It's a romance but also a family saga that is the first in a series. There's a lot of humor, especially between the MCs, but it deals with very heavy subject matter. I'm afraid of subverting reader's expectations if I correctly categorize it as a romance, because I feel it's also a lot more. Any advice?
Thank you for your quality podcast.

Hi FRF, so glad you enjoyed the episode. Romance can definitely contain heavy subject matter but at it's core is a story about the relationship between the love interests and that is what romance readers are reading for (with HEA or HFN ending). Your novel could maybe fit in womens fiction or family sagas? All genres can contain romance sub plot and threads, not just a romance novel. But it's the difference between having romance as the main course rather than the just the side dish, if that makes sense? ~ Shar

I wonder if the overwhelming obsession (myself included) that Booktok had this last year for Astarion brought Vampires back into vogue? I know it made me want to write another vamp romance.

Vampires have been my jam since *cough* the 90s - they're like dress hems, they go up and down in a cycle ;) ~ Shar
