Great video! I have some more series to look into now! I would recommend "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" series by Alexander McCall Smith. It is set in Botswana. (If you can fit another one in😊)
Don't forget Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver mysteries! I learned of her from Miranda Mills, and am really enjoying them. They can take a little while to get into, if you start with one of the weaker ones, but well worth sticking with. So many variations on themes.
I highly recommend reading some of Georgette Heyer's mysteries (1920's-1930s). People read her regency books but try her mysteries. I am currently reading her A Christmas Party, a locked room murder and I cannot figure it out at 270 pages in. It is so good. Thanks for your list of books for me to research! You're better than a librarian!
Wow Kate! You are a miracle! You seem to have the ability to squeeze 200 hours out of every 24 hours. I'm in awe of your ability to get through so many wonderful books. You are such an inspiration to me. Thank you sincerely for bringing so much joy to my life and countless others I'm sure!!
I'm currently reading two mystery series. 1) The Mrs. Jeffries series by Emily Brightwell set during Victorian times. She's the housekeeper for a Scotland Yard inspector and, unbeknownst to him, she and the rest of his house staff help him solve crimes. She's still writing them, I have 39 on my shelf and read up to #8, loving them. 2) The High Society Lady Detective series by Sara Rosett. There are 8 (so far), I just finished #2 today. Olive Belgrave due to circumstances has to work and has found a knack for sleuthing. It's set during the 1920's. They are very entertaining. I'm going to have to check out some of the ones you read since there are a few I've never heard of. Thanks for the list.
Of course I requested five of these from my library. I am reading Death of an Airman which is so good! It’s so sad the author died so young! I could not renew two of the books as there were now holds o. Them….are they watching your channel too?
I loved listening to this, Kate! ♥️ I’m especially interested in the Italian set one. I’m slowly working through Lady Darby! I need try Myrtle on audiobook, because I’ve struggled getting into it.
Great video, Kate! I love mysteries and have read so many of these series or are in the midst of them myself. But you’ve made me add a few more to my TBR as well! I have to recommend the Lady Hardcastle mysteries by T.E. Kinsey because I think you would love them. They are particularly good on audio which I know you enjoy!
I’m impressed! Lots of food for reading here. I recommend the 4:50 from Paddington in the Miss Marple series. I read it twice in recent years and it’s so clever. Happy reading!
I love P.D. James's Dalgliesh series!!! However, I think it is better to read them in order because despite there are not necessarily related, Adam's career, team, etc. progress with the novels. Also, time changes, so it's so interesting to see how, at first, it was only phones and mail or telegram, and later there are cell phones, email and computers. The means at their disposal to investigate also change, and, of course, the personal life and relationships of Adam, so if you read them out of order you are in for some spoilers 😉
Thanks Kate. Great breadth and precision in your recommendations. You’d like the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series by Anne Perry. In the Linley series, you left out a major character who is easy to root for: DS Barbara Havers.
I don’t think C.J. Sansom is going to write another Matthew Shardlake book 😢 so I’m eking them out slowly, so far I’ve read the first four and loved them all!
This is a great guide and a terrific resource! Thank you! I'm currently in the middle of the Brother Cadfael series, the Oxford Medieval Mysteries by Ann Swinfen (love the characters in these), the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde, and, of course, numerous Agatha Christie books. God bless, Lisa
These books are wonderful! They're very immersive and you can tell she did her research. The characters are lovable, too. Unfortunately, Ann Swinfen died several years ago, so there are only 6 books in the series.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that is struggling with Gaudy Night. I got about half way through and put it aside in the summer. Still planning to read and maybe I will try the ones that are supposed to be better or more reader friendly? I’ve read some of the other series that you mentioned and am interested in trying some that you mentioned that I haven’t read. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. I’m currently reading some DSP, Miss Read, Little Women (first time!) and the Christmas novella you recommended last year, Gaslight Christmas. I’m hoping to add another holiday mystery (finished Sittaford Mystery). But of course my hold came in for The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose. Guess I’ll see how I get on with that.
Great hearing about all the series you enjoy. The last Maisie Dobbs next year! ☹️ I read all of the series over the past two years entirely on audio. Orlagh Cassidy is wonderful. The first book was read by Jacqueline Winspear but all the rest have been by Cassidy. I have been trying to find another series on audio that engages me as well, but I haven't found one yet. I don't like amateur sleuths so that leaves out lots of series.
Interesting and informative. Your enthusiasm was inspiring. I did not realize how many of the crime dramas I watch on Acorn and Britbox are based on a book series. I would be very interested to hear your comparisons of the books and the videos.
We are on the same reading vibe, and love knowing what you are reading. Would it be possible for you to compile a list of your books behind you on the screen? Maybe a shelf review?
A few years back I did a series of bookshelf tours over on my patreon and they are still accessible now if you were interested. It was quite an undertaking!
I am the same as you and have many mystery series on the go. I enjoyed hearing about yours and found a couple of new ones to try. I would like to suggest you try Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker.
I love this video! I am taking notes and saving some of these to my Thriftbook wishlist. I am so glad you shared about Grantchester...the PBS series got so bad and soap opera-ish I just had to stop watching. I walked away from it about 4 seasons ago. I am getting ready to read Moonflower Murders because there is another PBS one coming for this book. I love that Anthony Horowitz has his hands all over those projects so they stay true to the intent of the books. I always enjoy your videos and especially on mysteries and series you are working through. Thanks for all you share!
You might check out Tana French. She puts us into the minds of her detectives in a way that I found unique and almost addicting. Except for the most recent volume. I love Gamache but I was a bit disappointed with the most recent volume. I am done with governmental conspiracy at the highest levels, blah, blah, blah.
Have you tried the, Walt Longmire Mystery series? The narrator, George Guidall, is amazing! I’m only on the second book but I immediately started it after finishing the first, ( I’ve always let months pass before.) I haven’t started it yet but I heard the t.v. series makes some changes. I didn’t find any of the sexist male gaze that was prevalent in the early 2000’s.
A great list. Thanks for posting. I have read the odd book in a few of those series, but I've never done an entire one. I'm trying to find some less gritty mysteries with black characters at the moment as I've only read the no.1 Detective Agency. Of course the Walter Mosely ones with Easy Rawlings are great, but hard hitting. Thanks for posting.
I haven't read The Nine Tailors but I don't think you'll like it unless you're particularly interested in the minutiae of bellringing. I had to give up on Five Red Herrings because of the extremely tedious examination of train timetables. Cover Her Face is one of the most well-written books I've ever read, but my problem with the first four P. D. James books is Dalgleish doesn't really solve the crimes, the murderers reveal themselves in several ways. That's not what we paid the price of admission for. I absolutely love A Murder is Announced. The solution is insanely good.
You are a tag #katerec on my Goodreads so when i purge my Want to Read I'll be sure your suggestions stay. 😉 i definitely need to get back to Miss Marple next year. I love her! I'm also going to try out Mrs. Polifax that Chantel keeps talking about.

Loved this! Out of all of these I've only read Maisie Dobbs. I really enjoyed the Maggie Hope series though, and would recommend it!
HandThe Lady Hardcastle series is absolutely delightful on audio. TE Kinsey is the author.

You're better than a librarian!
Bwa! I'm going to have to bookmark this video, Kate, because you've introduced me to at least four series I'd never heard of, before! : ) Thank you. 😊
I adore the Miss Seeton books by Heron Carvic. There are 2 other authors who have continued the series but they don't touch the original.
Oh my goodness. Great video. This really inspires me to make 2024 the year of the mystery. Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions.
I hope you find some new favorites!

The Nine Tailors is probably the best mystery ever written.
Of course I requested five of these from my library. I am reading Death of an Airman which is so good! It’s so sad the author died so young!

The Myrtle audiobook narrator is really good!
@@elizabethbrink3761thanks, Elizabeth! Good to know!
Amy, I hope you enjoy Myrtle on audiobook! I've really loved it that way.

Yay! I hope you have fun getting your feet wet!
@@katehowereads thank you!💃

I'm so excited to see Her Royal Spyness on your list. It's my favorite!

Grantchester is one of my favorite mystery series. Since it has a PBS show, I am continuously surprised that so few people online discuss the series.
Right?! A vastly underrated book series!

Yes! She has gone on such a journey. It does look like Jacqueline Winspear has plans for another series with her new book from last year.
Great video! 🕵♂️

There is not even a hint of an affair in the books 😡😡😡 Amanda is also so much more interesting in the books.

I read the first four and agree that the narrator is amazing! The sexual content and language just got to be too much for me unfortunately.
I see, I was hoping that didn’t happen. Thank you, I’m glad I checked them out from Libby and didn’t purchase them.

Yes, unfortunately there aren't nearly as many. It's a shame.

I absolutely loathed Five Red Herrings!
have you ever read inspector montalbano
