The aliens wear a bio mechanical suit. Dr. Okun says that when he’s showing them “the freak show”. Captain Hiller finds Jasmine in LA so quickly because she expected he was at Del Toro airforce base and he knew she was headed there too based on their plan before he left. It’s the first place either of them would look for one another.
One of the biggest gripes people had with this movie is the ideal of hacking an ALIEN MILITARY NETWORK with a laptop from 90s. In extended version, there is a scene that explains this: apparently scientists based computers (hardware and software) on the technology from downed alien craft they had.
That really wouldn't have mattered anyway. While their specific binary machine code would differ, it wouldn't really be that hard for someone who understands binary to figure out. Then it would be a question of building an assembly language around that, which can translate between our coding languages and theirs. Again, not an insurmountable task at all. It would, in fact, be considerably easier than just translating their actual language. The main problem, is how long it would take. Depending on who's doing it, and how much competent help they have (which in fairness, is pretty unlikely among programmers of any era, it seems), it could be done in a matter of months. But definitely never a few hours. Then again, the other thing is that I will almost guarantee you, that the Harvesters had NO security in their digital systems AT ALL. Why would they? They're all telepathic, and they're all wholly unified as a species in their purpose. They have no concerns about anyone getting into their systems, because it's NEVER happened, in their entire history. They never went through a phase like we are with our internet and personal devices. So getting into their systems is as simple as just getting one of our computers to talk to theirs. Which, I already pointed out would take a fair bit of effort, but is far from impossible. Aliens just won't be that alien. Evolution just doesn't work that way. Exotic shit is rare. The most successful species are pretty standardized. Almost every world in the cosmos is going to be water/oxygen/carbon based, and most of the life on those worlds will at least bear a superficial similarity to species we'd recognize from Earth. They'd be clearly different, but not unrecognizably so. The least believable things in the movie is really the fact that they invaded at all...and the fact that they have telepathy (particularly inter-species telepathy).
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 Have you ever read "Sphere" by Michael Crichton? It's a great sci fi book and it has a chapter where scientists discussing what alien contact and aliens themselves might be like. You might find it interesting.
This movie should be an inspiration to many filmmakers. Simple premise, simple characters, but so many impactful moments and didn't pull it's punches either. Great movie 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@@freddiegillespie_05 Considering how bad so many movies have been across the century or so of filmmaking, I wouldn't call the sequel terrible at all. It's definitely not good, but it's pretty far from terrible. It didn't have the charm of this one, but it still had fun moments, and the quality of its effects was notably better. They weren't used well, but they were of better quality. Then again, this first movie really isn't that great either. It's fun and stupid, but not good. Better than it's sequel, yes, but not that much better, and not as good as many claim.
32:16 "Does the President have the authority to fire somebody of that rank?" I am a Brit, living in eastern Europe, and even I know the answer to that. The Sec. of Defense is just another member of the federal cabinet, appointed by the President. So yes, he does.
Bill Pullman is a fantastic actor. While this was a formulaic movie, I’ve seen him play a villain that makes your skin crawl and a dad that cries and every other type of character. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen him in.
As objects encounter the atmosphere at extreme velocities, they generate plasma by ionizing the gas molecules through friction. It's not "fire" normally, but if you generate enough of it, for long enough, it could potentially ignite other volatiles in the atmosphere. Considering the size and speed of those big city-ships, it's probable that they're generating so much thermal energy on their entry, that they're splitting the atmospheric water vapor into hydrogen and oxygen, which then ignites, creating a fireball around the ship, surrounded by "clouds". Because of the ships' shields, they'd don't give a damn about any of it. Their hull doesn't have to really withstand much, because the shield takes it all. Their unshielded parts don't seem to survive entry any better than our own equipment. The attack craft probably only survived at the end because Will is just that good of a pilot.
Great reaction! 😊 This is one of my all-time favorite Will Smith movies, along with his "Men in Black" movie trilogy. And this is a must watch movie every 4th of July. The cast in this movie is top tier. We've also got Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid, and Vivica A. Fox in this movie. I do very highly recommend the 2016 sequel "Independence Day: Resurgence". Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
You have to remember this was BEFORE the "all CGI" SFX. Lots of models and real explosions here. Emmerich, the director, likes to destroy the White House. Most of his "destruction-porn" films have it being destroyed or damaged one way or another. His previous film, and first international hit, was Stargate. And they had a gag showing à firetruck crashing in a billboard with Stargate's poster on it. The scene was ultimately cut because Emmerich thought that "the end of the world wasn't the best moment for a meta joke". One of Emmerich's running gags is the dog being saved...
I will never forget watching this on independence day when it was released at a family gathering as a kid..it was an insane experience..great reaction 💯
That parachute he shot at the spaceship was for his jet. Those jets fly so fast they can need a little help slowing down on landing so they don't overshoot the runway, especially on aircraft carriers where the length of the runway is limited by the size of the boat. The aliens where in a biomechanical suit, that's what they cracked open. Steve found Jasmine at the base bacause he told her to come stay with him there
F-18s do NOT have a drag chute. However, if they did, they would NOT be deployed on an aircraft carrier as it is a hazard. The planes catch a thick steel cable, and it is that that stops the plane. My Hubby worked on the CATS on the U.S.S. Roosevelt for two years.
A lot of people miss on how Capt. Hilliard found Jasmine. She went to the Marine Base in El Toro like he asked her and waited for him to meet her. Neither one knew that the base had been destroyed until the General told Hilliard. Still he had to take that chance that Jasmine and Dylan were alive.
38:25 - without this "bringing them in automatically", I wonder how long our two heroes would search for a right plug in port to upload the virus...in a ship 1/4 the size of the moon?
I love this movie. Everyone that went to my high school were so proud because a guy that graduated a year ahead of me was in this movie. He was in it for probably less than 30 seconds but he was in it. He was the helicopter pilot that got toasted early on.
Near the beginning of the movie Steve invites Jasmine to stay at the base with him after her work. That's where she went after the alien attack and that's how he knew to look there for her.
I'm another that agrees that the President's speech was epically written and performed. Every time I've heard it, from first time till now, I always think "someone's getting re-elected for sure."
The Secretary of Defense, like all Cabinet members in the Executive Branch, serves at the pleasure of the President. Although it's rarely exercised, the President has the authority to fire any political appointee in the Executive Branch...for any reason. This is especially true in a time of extreme emergency or war. Only the Vice President can't be fired by the President, since he/she is an elected Constitutional Officer. To remove the Vice President, he/she would have to be impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate. If, however, the President requests the VP's resignation, they usually comply to avoid political chaos.
It wasn’t one alien inside of another I think you missed the part where they said it was a biomechanical suit, basically his spacesuit made out of living material
Love this movie so much. The presidents speech is arguably the greatest in cinema history. Loved how it was Russell who sacrificed himself to destroy the space ship. I will forever remember, HELLO BOYS, IM BACK.

A lot of '80s and '90s sci-fi movies had novelizations, and Independence Day is no exception, with the novel fleshing out a number of details. Aside from that there is both an extended edition of the film and a British radio play. The extended edition buffs several plotlines, including with Russel's family (there is also an alternate version of Russel's actions and role in the final battle, which spoiler free as I can say, was not as good - the novel fully follows that version of Russel's actions as well). The UK radio drama is entirely new material covering several things happening on the British front, including the fate of the royal family and attempts by both the RAF and the EU to deal with the aliens. At the end, one of the surviving British pilots says, tongue in cheek, that when the invasion is all over, the Yanks will take full credit. Which, well...
Movie Trivia FYI: Since you reacted to Top Gun: Maverick a while back, you might be interested to know (if you don't already) that the actor who played Weapon Systems Officer "Bob" - Lewis Pullman - is the son of Bill Pullman, who plays the U.S. President in this film.
I started watching this video before I noticed your RUclips name but just after 7:00 when you said, “my god, look at ‘er” I knew you were a fellow Newfoundlander! How’s ya gettin’ on b’y? Also, as corny as this movie is, it’s probably my favourite movie of all time. The movie score/music is next level!
Absolutely love this film. I watched it on VHS when it came out. There's quite a few favourite parts: one would be the evacuation sequence when the President leaves the White House for Air Force One. Second would be the destruction of NYC and the White House. Brilliant scenes.
27:20 - I live close to some air bases and I remember driving down the highway when this black triangle flew over with very little noise. It looked really alien!
They actually cut over a half hour from the movie. It would've shown a lot of the backstory for the main characters. A Young Steve Hiller watching the moonlanding, David punching the President, Dr. Okun getting recruited for Area 51, Russels's abduction, and the Rosswell incident. Unfortunatly you can't find it anywhere except for the comicbook adaption of the movie.
24:27 The aliens are inside bio-suites as described by Dr. Oken when they first showed the aliens in the tubes. 22:08 Will finds his girlfriend because she went to the airfield like he told her to do before leaving. Something that was removed from the original movie is that most of modern computer tech was designed based on information from the crashed ships, so current computers can still interface with the alien tech.
There are a lot of unbelievable things in this movie that we simply don't think about or question as we're too caught up in what is one hell of a fun ride. Excellently paced I have to say, kudos to the editor. Here's one thing that only occurred to me recently. That nuke that blew up the mothership must have been the most powerful nuke ever, even then its hard to believe one nuke could destroy an object that's a fourth the mass of our moon. Also it's not fate that it was the 4th of July at all, it was contrivance but who cares. The film is too much fun to dwell on these things. I do remember friends of mine saying the film was a little silly, and me getting angry with them because they didn't enjoy the film as much as I did.
Nuke going off inside the ship - depending on the construction and nature of the atmosphere within - could very well do that much damage. Similar to the fact that you can set off a tiny Black Cat firecracker on palm of hand and it'd just sting, but if you grip your hand closed around it it can potentially blow off fingers. Explosion within enclosed spaces enhances the effect.
0:56 Eddie wants to see aliens in his life. Me: No, leave it. not this one. 😊 Roland Emmerich just makes super flat movies. although this one is one of the better ones. my 2 cents. ... but I still watch now because I enjoy watching with Eddie.❤
You are Canadian. It's your duty to watch "Youngblood" (1986). It's ice-hockey. Rob Lowe, Patrick Swazye and a bit of Keanu. Thanks from Sweden also a Ice-Hockey country.
If you liked this, consider checking out "The Day After Tomorrow" by the same director. And Poseidon (2006) about an ocean liner that gets capsized by a rogue wave. It's a remake by the notorious Wolfgang Peterson.
The reason the incoming City-Destroyers look like big balls of fire while entering the atmosphere is because their tech is so advanced, the shields protect the ship without the need to calculate optimal entry angles to reduce friction. They're just bomb-assing in and setting the air on fire around around them :P F/A-18 Hornets are not flown by the USAF btw, they're carrier fighters for the US Navy, and the ones in this film are SEVERELY underarmed. A Hornet can carry a max of 12 missiles on its hardpoints, not 4 :P
These aliens were based off of the Flatwoods Monster. Both have a spade shaped head, and the Flatwoods Monster was described as having an almost robotic body protecting its real body - hence the whole "the real aliens are inside the biological suit" that we see during the autopsy.
43:35 lol that cool hip-swaying walk of Jeff Goldblum's is always unforgettable to me. Do I believe Roswell happened and a downed alien craft was recovered with bodies? Yes I do. Do I believe all the Presidents are in on the reverse engineering currently going on with such crafts? Nope. Jimmy "The Reverend" played by Harry Connick Jr. was in a couple other films I think you'd find entertaining. The first is based on a real WW2 bomber called 'Memphis Belle' that came out in 1990 of which he was part of the crew on their 25th and final mission. The other is called 'Copycat' that came out a year before in 1995 that stars Sigourney Weaver. He plays a pretty entertaining psycho even if his air time is minimal.
After the virus was in, the first missile still impacted the shield. It simply had not gone down yet. Seconds later, it went down. Latency, that's all.
1. Hiller is a USMC Captain he knows his holiday off is over. That's why he didn't even have to wait to be called in. His squeeze should know that. 2. Getting the hell out. 4. Lisa Jakub/Alicia is FINE!😍😋 5. Brent Spiner/Dr. Okum played Data in Star Trek TNG. It's nice to see him with emotions. 6. Goof: The president said he sent up an AWAC. It's AWACS= Airborne Warning And Control SYSTEM. 7. BEST line in the movie, "Yes yes, without the oops". 8. Hiller failed his jump quals here.😏
00.54 I totally get it man.. I mean at this point.. its basically known on pretty much almost every level that there HAS to be SOME type of alien species out there... so yeah.. I would also like to see it in my life time haha.. how sad would it be if it took another 5thousand years for one of us to contact the other? Lol.

The Alien was wearing a biomechanical suit as Dr. Oken explained in the beginning. That's why it looked like one Alien inside another. Captain Hiller flew to his Base in El Toro with the stolen Helicopter and found his girlfriend and the other survivors there. She drove to the Base because she thought he might be there. The presidents first missile didn't go through because the shilds were still up. It took a little bit longer than expected for the signal with the virus to travel from the mothership to the ones on earth. But seconds later the shields were down and the second missile gets through.
Growing up in California I've experienced a few earthquakes over 58 years. When I visited family in Texas I experienced a tornado. I'll stick with the earthquakes. I guess it's what you're familiar with.
Regarding firing the Secretary of Defense: as a Cabinet secretary, he "serves at the pleasure of the President". This means that the President can bounce him at any time without even needing to give a reason. The movie is inaccurate when SecDef says 'He can't do that!', because he not only can do that, there was literally a Supreme Court case in the 19th century that specifically upheld the President's right to do that.

Jeff Goldblum Independence Day: "MUST GO FASTER!!"

Whatta ya at Ryro? Haha thanks for watching. It's a great movie for sure! :)
3:50
The fire is from when the ships enters Earth's atmosphere.
Same thing happens when space shuttles shall re-enter but way smaller fire.
21:59 is based off real events 💯
Love the speech the the president makes at the end and love Rust final words
Music is really good, too. Heard a suite from this on NPR - knew it before announcer named it.
Aliens: ok so you are flashing lights at us, you have chosen... death
Atmospheric friction. 5 mile discs make a shit load of heat entering an atmosphere
Will finds his girlfriend because she went to the airfield like he told her to do before leaving.
Something that was removed from the original movie is that most of modern computer tech was designed based on information from the crashed ships, so current computers can still interface with the alien tech.
Yessss me too. If I could have ONE thing it would be to know and see what the other life that is out there
There are a lot of unbelievable things in this movie that we simply don't think about or question as we're too caught up in what is one hell of a fun ride.
This movie is a favorite and I watch it at least once a year.
0:56 Eddie wants to see aliens in his life.
Me: No, leave it. not this one. 😊
Roland Emmerich just makes super flat movies. although this one is one of the better ones. my 2 cents. ... but I still watch now because I enjoy watching with Eddie.❤
The scientist explained when they first let them in to see the "freak show" he said they were in a biomechanical suit. Sort of like living armor.
Thx for the reaction
They're just bomb-assing in and setting the air on fire around around them :P
F/A-18 Hornets are not flown by the USAF btw, they're carrier fighters for the US Navy, and the ones in this film are SEVERELY underarmed.
The other is called 'Copycat' that came out a year before in 1995 that stars
Sigourney Weaver. He plays a pretty entertaining psycho even if his air time is minimal.
"How it'd get through that time?"
^It took time to take proper effect, and filter through to the ships; not everything happens instantly hehe
35:00 greatest movie speech of all time !! Lol easy 💯 ..always gives me goosebumps!!
That makes you wonder what other things are getting room that's been hiding in that area
I Robot is another great Will Smith movie.
After the virus was in, the first missile still impacted the shield. It simply had not gone down yet. Seconds later, it went down. Latency, that's all.
40:58 Me walking into the toilet after quesadillas
"Bio-mechanical suit" the first face wasn't the real face
love this movie 💜💜
1. Hiller is a USMC Captain he knows his holiday off is over. That's why he didn't even have to wait to be called in. His squeeze should know that.
2. In the theater I was in the people in there actually stood up and cheered when the White House and the Capitol Building blew up.
3. In my top 10 reasons out of thousands to NOT live in a Metropolis. Getting the hell out.
4. Lisa Jakub/Alicia is FINE!😍😋
Lol.
This is one of my favorite movies. Another one of my favorite movies you should react to is The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz.
Star Trek fan her: that shield is an energy absorber . Nukes will be deflected..all energy dissipated.
One of my favorite Movies. Show you other Movies: Twister (1996), Godzilla (1998), The Day after Tomorrow (2004), 2012 (2009), Apollo 13 (1995), Outbreak (1995), The Sum of all Fears (2002), Jaws (1975), Lethal Weapon 1-4, Bad Boys 1+2 with Will SMith and Martin Laurence, Gladiator (2000), Dantes Peak and Volcano
You should check out the second one too! It is pretty fun. :)
The most American movie 🇺🇸
Dude..Will Smith literally told her to come to his base at El Toro. He went there first to look for her.
The movie is inaccurate when SecDef says 'He can't do that!', because he not only can do that, there was literally a Supreme Court case in the 19th century that specifically upheld the President's right to do that.
when I lived in San Francsico, I didnt get out of bed if the earthquake was under a 5.4 lol. the 6.0 got my attention and got my ass ouside though
now you’ve watched this it would be great to see you watch Arrival & Nope!!
