I frigging love this film. It doesn't try to take itself too seriously but it's still suspenseful; you know that characters can die at any moment. Also, the characters are awesome. The chemistry between them is always genuine, and you can see how Brendan and Rachel are actually having fun flirting.
I wish the second film was this good. It's got a great start but they tried to cram too much in the second half of it.
Don't even get me started on the third one...

A friend of mine once said that Flynn from Disney's 'Tangled' must be heavily inspired by Brendan Frasier. It fits so well.
Regarding the cats: the goddess Bastet was depicted with a cats head and they were often mummified to add to the burial site. Bastet was the goddess of fertility, protector of pregnant women and the homestead, but also goddess of dance and joy.
Plus, the Egyptians relied heavily on their crops, so cats were very welcome to make themselves comfortable and chase the vermin and guard the harvest in the silos. So yeah, they really liked and honored their cats.

Those little urns are called Canopic jars. They were used to store a person's organs (liver, stomach, lungs, and intestines) after mummification. And the movie added an extra one. They only ever used 4 jars, the jackal, the baboon, the falcon, and the person. The lion jar is not historically accurate. Well, most of the stuff in the movie is inaccurate ^^; However, Anaksunamun's (trying my best with the spelling here) outfit in the beginning is pretty close to something a high priest did for his pharaoh to ease his boredom. He took the palace's most beautiful women and dressed them in nothing but fishing nets. That's probably where we got today's fishnet tights and whatnot. They preferred matte red lip color, though, not gold gloss XD
Someone recommended Prince of Egypt, and I can't agree more that it's a masterpiece of non-Disney animation, but I raise you Joseph King of Dreams. It has, in my opinion, a better story behind it. It's still religious, but it's not as in your face about it. It doesn't denounce the Egyptian beliefs like PoE does. And the songs get stuck in my head more.
If you want to watch a movie that's so bad that it's entertaining, Gods of Egypt would be a sturdy choice. The historical accuracy is. . . bad. And the CG would be passable for a video game. But it's entertaining enough to watch. I'm speaking as someone who's very interested in Egyptian mythology, so I've read up on a lot of it. And saying they took liberties with the story would be a bit of an understatement. For someone who doesn't know a lot about the Egyptian legends, it's a fun action movie full of CG fight scenes.

Anubis is the jackal-headed god of the dead, specifically of the burial rites and guardian of tombs. Osiris is the God of the Underworld itself. Set is the god of the desert, storms, and chaos, and his animal head is not specified as any known, Egyptologists calling it simply the "Set animal". Set is also the father of Anubis, with Nephthys being Set's wife.
Imhotep was most famously known as the chancellor to the Pharaoh Djoser and architect of his step pyramid, as well as the high priest of Ra. He was later deified and is theorized to be buried somewhere at Saqqara.

You're right, Amun-Ra was a/the sun god! but more than that - Amun was the creator god and Ra was the sun god. They were often fused together because the sun gives life, hence Amun-Ra. Ra was also sometimes fused with Horus since they had similar characteristics (like the falcon head).
Horus was actually his great-grandkid or something down the genealogy line, and was a sky god and considered to hold the sun and the moon, which is why the book of the sun god would be under Horus' statue and the book of the dead would be under Anubis, the god of the dead. It also explains why the book of life is called book of Amun-Ra - he was said to create life.

There was always only 4 canopic jars, and they always left the heart in the body as it was needed to be weighed against the feather of truth to get to the afterlife.
Now, we know the canopic jars in this case don’t contain Imhotep’s organs because as we saw in the very beginning he was buried alive, just bandaged with his tongue removed and covered in flesh-eating scarabs before being secured in sarcophagi- and we saw even before that, he was trying to resurrect Ankhsunamun (uncertain of spelling) with her organs in *five* canopic jars- so the ones he’s collecting as he’s regenerating are hers, since he’s once again trying to bring her back
But, and I don’t know if there’s information elsewhere about the Pharaoh’s mistress specifically, having five jars made no sense so part of me just assumed that the fifth canopic jar was for her heart, because if she didn’t have her heart she’d not travel to the afterlife, and therefore her soul would be somehow easier to retrieve from the underworld to resurrect her?
That was just a guess I made when I watched it first years ago anyways.

Imhotep. Fun Fact:The real Imhotep served under more than 5 famous pharaohs starting with Djoser and ending with the legendary Rameses II who was said to be the pharaoh in Moses`s time,he did briefly serve Seti I but if he murdered him as this film depicts it would have caused a scandal in all the North African kingdoms for a pharaoh to be murdered by his own trusted high priest. Also mummifications were not a punishment, they were the equivalent of being Egyptian royalty or one of the gods. Imhotep was not only a high priest,he was one of the most brilliant architects in Egypt(The Great Pyramid of Giza was his handiwork)as well as a cartographer, mathematician, alchemist, astrologer and many others. In other words, he was a jack of all trades and revered, not feared, within Egypt and the surrounding kingdoms. Indeed, for his accomplishments he was deified after his death, an honour usually only reserved for Pharaohs and their families.Furthermore, the Exodus story wasn`t commonplace in Egypt until the country converted to Judaism around the latter part of the Middle Kingdom. The conversion to Orthodox Christianity came later due to Alexander`s conquests in Egypt and the conversion to Islam far later than that due to Ottoman,Alemanni,Persian and Arabian occupation of North Africa which frequently reduced Christians and Jews who were once nobility, merchants and soldiers to slaves and traders in furs, frankincense ,myrrh and camels. Some Christian children both in North Africa,Sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe were even made Janisarries, child soldiers for the Ottomans who were often malnourished, whipped and molested to keep them from even thinking about defecting back to their Christian families and countries(If you were wondering how the true story of the Mummy and the true story of Dracula might connect, that`s how).Obviously, this often had the opposite of the intended effect. Also, cats were considered sacred in Ancient Egypt, however it was because of their association with the gods, not that they were "guardians of the underworld."(Those gods often had the appearance of jackals, birds and crocodiles, not cats.)There were in fact Medjai, however whether they were native Egyptians,Arabic,Amazigh(Berber) or Jewish immigrants or a mix of the four is a matter of great debate amongst historians, archaelogists, scholars and theologians.Egyptians did avoid cutting out the heart but it is not for the reasons stated in the film, rather it is because Ancient Egyptians considered the heart the seat of intelligence, if you read the Old Testament it`s very clear where the Israelites continued the beliefs of their old masters and adapted them to their new faith.

    Fun facts.
The scarabs don't eat meat and there are only 4 jars not 5. They never took out the heart

The jars contain his lovers organs 🫀🧠🫁 they mentioned earlier in the film that the organs are removed and placed in jars during mummification.

Egyptian worshipped cats because of the goddess Bastet, a healer(or a punisher), a warrior (in some forms of herself) and the elegant daughter of Ra.

The canopic jars contained the organs of Anck Su Namun which were needed as part of the ritual to raise her back from the dead.
That is why Imhotep wanted those jars.

I was scared shitless as a young teen watching this in theatres. I still love it though, watched it aboout a hundred times after it and also managed to give my little sister terrible nightmares 😆👍. Nowdays this is my go to feel good movie and still watch it often 🤌 such a fun one. And the second one also holds up. Third is unfortunately trash 😭. Love your reactions, found your channel and have binged it ever since, keep up the amazing job!!!

Horus, Amun, and Ra are sort of the same guy.
Amun is Ra's uncle. The God Of The Air.
Ra is an elder god. The God Of The Sun.
Horus is Ra's great great grandson. The God Of Kings and The Sky.
Ra and Horus both had falcon heads.
Ra eventually fused with Amun to become Amun-Ra.

Set has almost an ant eater nose that turns downwards. Anubis is the Jackal head. If you haven't guessed yet, I love ancient Egypt things as well! As others have said, what makes this movie so great is it really doesn't try to take itself too seriously. I love when there are moments like the repeated creepy wind. After one time, Brendan Frasier's character's comment: "That happens a lot around here." lol I love when characters poke fun at the story itself. The characters are truly fantastic.

One of the guys in this movie was also in Canadian Bacon with John Candy, but I can't remember his name, he's the guy with the fez, benny I think? But I don't know his real name ANYWAY, rambling on here 😅, Canadian Bacon is good, and John Candy is also in Splash and The Great Outdoors, both really good movies, basically any movie with John Candy is good 😀

Ah yes....one of my first crushes...Imhotep.
Edit: 4:48 that character and Brendan Fraser too.
I also wanted to be as smart and beautiful as her 7:38. I was 8 years old and I got obsessed with Ancient Egypt and wanted to be an egyptologist or paleoarchaeologist...my family undermined that dream. I still think that I would be cool to discover fossils or something new and study it

Also, scarab beetles are not flesheaters. That was an exaggeration for the horror aspect of The Film. Additionally, there were only four canopic jars, not 5. Also, The Book of The Dead and The Book of Amun-Ra were not actual books but scrolls containing spells, medicinal recipes, Egyptian instructions for treatment of slaves and pets, laws to help citizens of Ancient Egypt bargain with Anubis,Osiris and Ammit for a decent afterlife etc.

Absolutely love this film, saw it in the theater opening night with family and friends. One of the best action adventure films I never get tired of... oh an added bonus so anyone that wants to try, turn the color down to almost black and white and watch this movie from beginning to end, doing that changes the way you see the light on the CGI and makes it look a little more in the realm of real, not to mention the horrific elements seem just... more in black and white.
