    Props to Brendan Frasier for making the sword fight with the mummies look believable. Especially in an era where CGI in movies was new and actors weren't used to fighting non-existent characters.

      On the corridor digital channel there's an episode on the mummy and this among other things is one of the subjects touched, worth a watch imo.

      Technically, actors had been fighting non-existent characters for quite some time. They used to key-in separate footage like in Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, the Golden Voyage of Sinbad, etc.

      They did have stand in ppl for the mummies in the fight in side the tomb. They were keyed out after ( they wore green suits).

    The speed of horses and camels is only about 5mph difference on average. Horses can do burst speed better, but camels have much better stamina, and are far better equipped to run in sand.

      Yep, also fun fact. Over 20-30 miles, a prehistoric human would outrun horses and pretty much all other animals. There is actually an annual Horse Vs Man marathon where, although the horse usually wins, the difference is usually less than 10 minutes

      @@theshontman We were persistence hunters. We can get rid of heat more efficiently so over time and distance large animals build up too much heat. In the time that they run ahead of us they don't have enough time to get rid of all the heat before we catch up and they have to run again with more heat buildup until they are too exhausted to continue. There is a tribe in Mexico whose people routinely run 100 mile races in bare feet or simple sandals made of flattened 2L pop bottles.

      There's a wonderful interview with Peter O'Toole, who played Lawrence of Arabia, and who rode a camel during several wild rides in this epic movie. He had a hysterical story about riding the camel, saying at one point that, at a certain speed, the camel thinks it's a gazelle and starts leaping across the sand, and that all you can do hold on for dear life.

      @@theshontman not a "prehistoric" human, but humans in general are built for endurance and stamina (if they aren't necessarily the same). We may not be the most dangerous predator in the forests, or outrun almost anything besides snakes, but we can outlive, outsmart, and out-endure anything on this Earth.

      @@a-a-rondavis9438 yes, I didn't say we couldn't still do it. It's why I worded it as Prehistoric humans *would* do it, as it was once a necessity. We certainly can still do it if trained for in modern day for sure! But with the transition from prehistory to recorded domestication we shied away from such feats, hence my distinction from prehistoric would to historic recorded humans could.

      Came here to say this, but you said it perfectly. His standup comedy is amazing, especially when he used to play up his Iranian(I think) accent, and then suddenly drop back to his truer, almost RP accent, whilst continuing the same anecdote or joke. Amazing.x

    Idk if anyone else has mentioned this but Winston's character is kinda sad if you follow it. He's a sad old man in the RAF after ww1; drinking his sorrows away because 'all the other laddies died in the sky'. Later you can either interpret it as he's happy to be given a purpose by helping the gang, or he's excited to possibly die because he misses alll his friends and wants to die

      I think it's a mixture of both. He reminds me of the old warrior Tostig from Vikings who wanted to go on one last raid so he could die in battle and go to Valhalla with his friends who had all died years before..

    It's a good thing for us and this movie that Leo "wasn't available".
    He was too young at this point. He was/is too small. He would not have pulled off the humor in the same perfect way. He would not have been a fitting love interest.
    With no disrespect to him as a great actor, but Brendan Fraiser was the perfect pick.

    one of the best character moments for rick is when hes encouraging benny to hurry and reaches his hand out for him, its like if he could have saved him he would have, but since he couldnt hes not gonna lose sleep over it, but it does seem like he knows benny only sided with imhotep because hes a coward and had no choice, rick probably would have forgave him, great moment that lasts for like 5 seconds.

    Braden Frasier is the fucking boss man!! When he screams back into the Monsters face and blasts it with the Trenchgun is always my favourite scene in any movie. Edit: I salute Sir Winston. The Chad amongst men!!

    I was just in high school when this came out, and I was lucky enough to see it in the theaters. The Mummy, The Matrix, Fight Club, Office Space, Blair Witch, The Sixth Sense, The Iron Giant, The Green Mile, The Phantom Menace, The World Is Not Enough, Toy Story 2... 1999 was such a magical year for movies.

    Dude, I didn’t even think of the idea of Brandan Fraser possibly portraying Nathan Drake or possible this film gave the creators some influence for the Uncharted series. Anyway, I really dig this film. Sure some of the cgi is outdated but it’s a fun film. Hope you’ve a good day brother and look forward to the next vid 🤘🏻

      Cats don't have anything to do with the dead in Egyptian mythology, but they were the avatars of Bastet/Sekhmet and hence protectors against evil (which the main baddie undoubtedly is on a metaphysical level).

    I definitely reccomend you watch Van Helsing. Its done by the same director. Even though its more Gothic, the adventure and action vibes is similar to this one.

      *_Van Helsing_* is so good! I personally love that movie. The film feels like a celebration of many of the classics of gothic horror to me.

    Fraser is one of those pro's who does most of their own stunts and all. Sadly he paid a heavy price for it, along with getting fucked by the industry. Hopefully his career will continue to pick up again cause he deserves the success.

      He's on the comeback trail! He even mentioned at a Con recently he's been talking to producers about a possible Rick O' Connell series, where he faces off against all manner of supernatural foes. Get him a little bit back in shape and we are good to go. He's also said Rick is the one character he would love to revisit above all

    Apparently, one of the big inaccuracies shown in the ancient Egypt scenes is, that it wasn't all yellow-dusty sandy colored like that. Egyptians LOVED painting everything in wild and vibrant colors...it's just faded over the millennia.

      Yeah, they probably would have made pretty good money over time with the right marketing. The MCU proved that people will show up for action/adventure with likable characters and comedic dialogue.

    Brendan fraiser is a treasure. Blending Indiana Jones and the mummy was a perfect mix. All the characters are enjoyable

    Rachel Weisz's breakthrough role. She always preferred the indie path but she really had that star quality and the chops to back it up. The way she played ditzy but charming and feminine was so refreshing for a female role I recommend you watch her work in small films like I want you, Beautiful creatures, or more recently The Favourite. Oh, and Black widow but I haven't seen that one yet.

    I didn't know that about Leo. Sidenote, The Beach is an incredible film. I'm glad he made that. Very underrated, you will see tones of Apocalypse Now in there, amidst the jaw-dropping beauty.

    Winston is by far the best character in the film. For the few times he is on screen, you absolutely fall in love with the old Veteran Pilot reminiscing about his hay day in the Royal Air Cavalry, mourning that he was the last of his long lost Compatriots, and eagerly jumping at one last chance to do something heroic.
    Salute to my Man, Winston.

    Fun fact: Arabian horses and camels actually both have the same top speed of about 40 mph. The crew with the horses must have just been crappy riders to be so far behind.

      Eh, another contributing factor may be that camels have better footing on sand, which would probably slow the horses down some, additionally (though probably not applicable here) is the fact that if horses are unused to the smell of camels, they will be skittish around them. Granted, if they are used to them, that would obviously no longer be applicable.

    The second movie was also very fun to watch. So you should keep it in mind for some other time as well I'd say. I'm suggesting Big Trouble in Little China for something else to watch. Very entertaining.

      @@JamesVSCinema more precisely Corridor Crew channel, and theirs newest VFX artists react episode, they have an art director for the mummy for that one, and he brought some original storyboards and concept arts with him.

    When it came out, the special effects in this movie were incredible (and IMO they still hold up well today, over 20 years later), but other than that you wouldn't walk away from this movie raving about how amazing it was. You *would* walk away from it talking about how much fun it was, though. It's a great popcorn movie, and it doesn't try to be anything else, which is exactly what audiences (including myself) wanted from it. And that's exactly why it's so much better than the 2017 Tom Cruise The Mummy.

    Technically the ORIGINAL "The Mummy" came out in 1932, but I think this one is still the best.

      This is a fun action movie. The 1932 Boris Karloff classic sets a mood and atmosphere that is lost in horror films today. IMO you can not beat the Classic Universal Monster films.

      Both versions are fantastic. I loved the 1932 version for the acting beats & slow subtle build, but given the time, the effects work was "best that they could do:. Whereas the 1999 film had wonderful comedic timing and the effects, makeup/wardrobe, conceptual work, stunts, direction and casting were elevated, nay in some cases, innovative (for instance the particle rendering used to create the creature's sandstorm effect).

    My dad took me to see this in the cinema when I was a kid. Pure nostalgia 😍 Quick story. My dad told me later on that this movie is special for him because it reminded him of when his dad took him to see Raiders of the Lost Arc. He was so happy he saw me have the same feeling he had as a child in the theatre as a kid. That’s what movies are about man. The emotions & adventures handed down through generations. Can’t wait for when I have kids so I can do the same for them!

    The removal and jarring of organs was a part of the mummification process, which was generally only done with Pharaohs or great figures. Egyptology fact: in real life they only used four canopic jars. Quite a few inaccuracies in this film actually, but still loads of fun.

    Many have probably already said it, but this isn’t the “original.” That would be the 1932 movie starring Boris Karloff.

      However Karloff's character, Imhotep, and his background and motivation are all that this movie took from the original aside from a few smaller references. The heroes are entirely original to this series.

    Absolutely love this film!!!! I've watched it more times than I can count. It was so well cast and that intro is incredible; it pulls you into the world. Thanks for giving Winston a shout out. You are the only reactor I've seen do that. Every time it gets to his death scene, I salute at the same time as Rick.

I just like how perfectly balanced and natural it is to the movie. The movie doesn't need to stop for a funny moment and make sure that you know that it's suppose to be funny. and it isn't forced.

    Another great reaction James! It’s nostalgic watching this movie but growing up in FL the mummy ride is very nostalgic too! Loved that you’ve ridden it and now finally saw the movie! They recently updated the ride and it’s even better, you should come back and ride it again now you’ve seen the movie!

      If Raiders had not shown how well mixing horror, adventure, and comedy could work, this might not have been made. And if it were made anyway, it might have been done as pure horror, like the 1932 original.

    This is a fun movie but, THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL “THE MUMMY”. For the ORIGINAL “The Mummy” you have to go back to 1932 for the Boris Karloff classic.

    I've found that there are few things more humbling and awe inspiring that making a legitimate connection to our own ancient past as a species. Visiting really old places and realizing that people lived their lives there. Shopped. Raised families. Told jokes. Sang and danced. It really makes you think.
    Legitimately a really good movie. Such fun.
