    If you find Bleed shallow I think you should listen to it again really carefully, it's one of their most complex songs. Also you may have listened to the short "radio" version which cuts out the epic solo and ending part so make sure you listen to the full version.

    • @MRMESQ1
      @MRMESQ1 4 года назад +1

      Bleed is far more complex than it sounds on the first listen, which is why I listen to them on my morning commute everyday.

    there is a reason that Steven Wilson loves these guys. SW and I are the same age, and share similar tastes.They are a gut punch.When listening to them, bear in mind these guys have been around from the beginning, early 1990s, they are pioneers of all the sub genres in this kind of music. I've been listening to them since the 90s....my suggestion..."Pravus " or "Do Not Look Down" live next...Meshuggah is always best live....

    Should check out Clockworks from them, it's from their newest album and I'm sure the purists may hate it, but such a great groove to the song and the video is trippy as hell.

    • @supermot34
      @supermot34 6 лет назад +1

      Purists hate it? I'm a huge Meshuggah fan for over a decade and it's one of my favorite songs of theirs now

      Same, but I've seen many old school Meshuggah fans trash Clockworks.

    The original chord-chuggers! Meshuggah is amazing because their riffs are so relentless with their polyrhythms and twists and turns. But you can still headbang to it if you just follow the cymbals.
    Check out their "Stengah live at Montreal"
    Also: "Cult of Luna - Ghost Trail live in London" ;)

      And snare on 3, same with Bleed. Knowing this makes these songs very easy to follow, even for the 'unintiated'.

  • @FoolForRespect
    @FoolForRespect 6 лет назад +5

    And do a live stream reaction for their album "Catch 33"!! It's basically one 30 minutes long song, which is cut in several tracks. That's my favorite by them, very hypnotic.

    • @morbidangel989
      @morbidangel989 6 лет назад +1

      I definitely second this suggestion since Catch 33 is pretty much one of my top 3 favorite albums of all time. It's more like 47 minutes long though.

    • @FoolForRespect
      @FoolForRespect 6 лет назад

      Josh Lewis is it that long? Remembered wrong.

    • @morbidangel989
      @morbidangel989 6 лет назад

      Torture Room I definitely love "I" as well. It may be a better option for a reaction video since it's 21 minutes (compared to Catch 33's 47 minutes). I personally am not sure at this point whether I like "I" or "Catch 33" better though. I've definitely listened to "Catch 33" more than "I", so maybe I'll dedicate some more listening time to "I" to gain a stronger appreciation for it.

    Really enjoy your videos.
    For the next Meshuggah song, and considering you've so far listened to fairly "non-variable" songs of theirs, I'd recommend something like "Nostrum". There's a drum playthrough video of Thomas Haake from the recording sessions, and there's also a bunny slipper-wearing bassist in the shot, which might interest you since you play the guitar.
    Or, try the recently Grammy-nominated opening track from their newest album, "Clockworks". The drum playthrough is also great for that, it gives you something to follow along with as far as the rhythms go.

  • @Anomalocaria

    every time i listen to some of their older stuff, back when the vocalist still had that Hetfield thing going on, there's nothing i can do to stop myself from repeating the same thought process. the train of thought that starts at "man, these guys were ahead of their time" and ends at "that's because they set the bar for our time."
    they're not on everyone's spotify playlists, but damn near every post-hardcore/grindcore/deathcore/whatevercore/djent band was influenced by Meshuggah either directly or by extension through some other band that was influenced by Meshuggah lol.

    Sick. I recommend ObZen or Koloss as good starting albums considering you are new to the band, as they are a bit more accessible than their previous stuff. Then again you seemed to enjoy this a lot so might aswell check out the rest of this album too. :P Also the "born to make you move" thing you mentioned is something that goes for most of their music. It's groovy as fuck. Latest album is fucking great too. Fuck it, they're all great.

    • @transient442
      @transient442 6 лет назад

      Adrian obzen accessible? I think the older stuff is more accessible, because it sticks more to the standard 'extreme metal' format.

    If you ever feel like it, you should find and read this paper called "Re-casting Metal: Rhythm and Meter in the Music of Meshuggah." It goes over the interesting ways that Meshuggah approaches rhythm in their music. One of the most common things Meshuggah seems to like to do is to use polymeter (more than one time signature simultaneously). They tend to have the cymbals and hi hat maintain a 4/4 pulse while other parts of the kit, as well as the bass, vocals, and guitar play in some odd time signature(s). These different time signatures creates rhythmic displacement, which is a really cool and interesting effect.

    Riff is not static at all though. It changes up alot, the changes are just hard to notice. The solos are always dreamsequence meaning they don't fit into any particular scale which is why they sound so weird. Meshuggah is an aqcuired taste, but once it clicks nothing ever compares.

  • @itsarchie1261
    @itsarchie1261 6 лет назад

    Incredible song, when I was doing delivery driving to get through uni this album (Chaosphere) was a staple for in my car. I can't believe it's nearly 20 years old now, it still makes most metal bands sound like they're struggling to catch up!
    Regarding the lyrics, there's no anti-religious sentiment as far as I'm aware - Meshuggah have much more interesting and philosophical lyrics than anything as trite as that. The lyrics to this track are, I understand, a dystopian vision of trans-humanism - people meshing their bodies with machines, worth a read!
    Whilst it's probably not a track to react to as it's 20 minutes long, I urge you to listen to their single track EP titled "I" - I consider it to be one of the most important pieces of music I own, but you really can't go too wrong with any music in their catalogue.

    If you want to try something completely different that you'll probably enjoy I'd like you to try the following song:
    Black Sun Empire ft. Noisia - The Veil
    or
    The Insiders - Wonder Why (Break Remix)
    I know it is completely different, delete the reaction video if you don't like it but I'm pretty sure you can enjoy it if you give it a shot.

    yes meshuggah tend to play a rythmic pattern over and over, playing with it, like in bleed with the "tudutu tu"
    And with some 5/4 or 7s it makes quite difficult songs
    I hope you will go back to Igorrr, for example their live at dour for Tout Petit Moineau (it means "very little sparrow" in french)
    or try Nero Di Marte, i know you like Hacride, and they're a similar sound but more ambient and really heavy and emotional

    • @JS-tm1gq
      @JS-tm1gq 5 лет назад

      Huascar Rojas meshuggah all 4/4 except the clean riff in future breed machine which is 13/8
      The subdivisions is what gives it that off time feel. The intro to this is 23/16’s and 13/16’s that end up slotting cleanly into 8 bars of 4/4.
      It reminds me of the Aztec calendar with several layers of different timings that align at a key point.

    Nice, glad to see you check out something of theirs before they made the... ugh... "djent" shift, lol. Chaosphere is the album this song appeared on and it was their "transition" album where they went from their more *melodic off-time thrash sound, to a much more *droning off time foreboding sound. I've seen some comments suggesting songs that are more "versatile", but if you want to hear a completely different (and imo more enjoyable) version of Meshuggah, check out their earlier work... night and day compared to their new stuff. A couple of good songs to check out would have to be Acrid Placidity (extremely beautiful and haunting instrumental), Suffer in Truth, and Internal Evidence (classic thrash... it will surprise you, lol). Peace man...

    I really don't mind "djent" as a name. I certainly think the style of music is distinct enough to have it's own name, might aswell be "djent".
    There certainly was a lot of cringey 8-string fanboyism and other annoying behaviour in the community in the early days, but that died off after a while, and the good bands and real fans of the style remained. I've really grown to love a lot of the bands in the "djent" scene.
