    One of the most neck breaking song ever to step on Earth. Massive!

    Meshuggah is for rhythm addicts.
    Not for just banging out to.
    You gotta first acknowledge what it is. It's meant to be confusing but simple enough to piss you off if you don't break it down.

    • @yoostburg
      @yoostburg 3 года назад +5

      I get what you're saying. But I don't think you have to understand it quite that much to enjoy it. You just gotta bang to the quarter notes and not get distracted by the snare. Meshuggah is groovy as hell, you just gotta find the pulse.

    • @Egoblivion
      @Egoblivion 3 года назад +1

      @@yoostburg I like what you said but usually the snare is the second most reliable part of Meshuggah (on the 2 and 4 or common backbeat), next to the hi-hat or crash, which is like you said on the 8ths or quarter notes.

    • @yoostburg
      @yoostburg 3 года назад +1

      @@Egoblivion I was over-simplifying for people who aren't used to complex drum patterns but you're right. But from my observation, it's when the kick/snare becomes syncopated that throws most people off. It's not "distracting" when it's simply falling on the backbeat.

    • @Egoblivion
      @Egoblivion 3 года назад

      @@yoostburg True but I guess I just wanted to emphasize that most of the time it does fall on the back beat.

    First it sounds repetitive, then the more you listen you notice that there is nothing repetitive at all. But it takes a little time to get that. Another thing I like about meshuggah is that the guitar is so great. I listen to a lot of different music and Jazz among other things. Meshuggah is so much Jazz Fusion. Its complecated and it depands a lot of you.. very active listening to understand it. And last thing.. I put on Meahuggah.. in the car.. damn its difficult to drive slow.. when I train.. damn I lift so much heavier.. but also to relax.. sounds strange perhaps but when you sit down and really focusing.. it is really meditative

    • @melvingira
      @melvingira 3 года назад +1

      Same here. I listen to Meshuggah to lift weights and also for relaxation. You’re right, it can be very meditative, almost trance inducing. A friend of mine described their music as mesmerizing. I thought that was perfect. They can pump me up or chill me out depending on my mood…I even fall asleep listening to them on super low volume sometimes ;)

    only a hardcore few are ready for Meshuggah (i certainly wasn't), but of serious musicianship, craftsmanship and jaw-dropping drops, these are the gods. the only way to embrace the cold machine is to let it conquer you piece by piece. it's well worth keeping dipping your toes in their waters.

    I completely understand you guys. It took me months to get into this band always going back listening to their albums because I found their super technical and complicated music still fascinating. Today Meshuggah is one of my top 5 favourite bands. Their live show is incredible and mesmerizing and I love how unique their sound is. Maybe check out their live performances. "Pravus" (live in Tokyo) is a good one and I am sure that will help you get into this band. You also gotta listen to "I" from Meshuggah! It is a 21 minute song of relentless heaviness/fastness and it is far from repetive! 😅

    Meshuggah is definitely a rhythm focused band and it's perfectly normal for some people to not enjoy their music as much.
    BTW, Rob Scallon has an amazing cover of this song on his youtube channel. Played with a one-string shovel, and a clarinet for the guitar solo (naturally)
    And if Rob Scallon isn't somehow familiar to you, then you are in for a treat.
    Check out some live video, or an actual show if that's ever possible. The lighting guy is basically a rhythm master and follows the songs perfectly, and as usual the band plays as tight as an atomic clock.

    I was like you with Tool man, I couldn't find myself to like them for the longest time. Then I laid down in a quiet room, open minded and listened to their most popular bangers. I was hooked about 10 min in. Before I had this false notion that they were a "heavy" band so I kept looking for their heavy song and of course couldn't find it. This lead me to not really enjoy them for what they are. I wish you luck in opening your third eye!

    One of the best feelings is bobbing your head to a Meshuggah polyrhythm and feeling the beat meet back up where you started.
    Try bobbing your head like the singer. One down and up movement for every two crashes.
    Also you can't see the drummer's feet, and it's hard to notice if no one tells you, but often times in their tracks, one strum of the rhythm guitar is one beat of the bass drum.
    In the video you're only seeing the 4/4 beat he's playing over some other ridiculous beat on the bass drums

    Totally understand where you guys are coming from. I first heard meshuggah in 2008 when Obzen came out and liked a couple songs, but just couldn't get into it. And I really wanted to because they were so heavy and foreboding. I kept trying, still couldn't after a few years and their next album. Finally went back a couple years ago and tried a fresh listen, after listening to a lot of funk and jazz. Suddenly I totally understood and they clicked, now they are like my top 5 band for any genre. The key for me was realizing musically these guys are not death or thrash metal, if you listen with your metal ears on, you probably won't get it. You have to listen for groove and rhythm and it just blows your mind.

    Hey guys! Sorry to steal your line! The song that really got me into Meshuggah was "War." Meshuggah is not easy to get into because they don't conform to the normal rhythms/time signatures we're used. "War" is the song that bridges the gap between their unique sound and the more familiar sounds we're used to, i.e. blast beats, breakdowns, solos, etc.
    I'd love to see your reaction to it and see if it bridges the gap like it did for me.
    Cheers! 🤘

    I have always loved Meshuggah, every since I heard my first song by them, Future Breed Machine. their songs seems to be repetitive and go in circles is because the patterns are so long, by the time it comes back around, it's been a long pattern. they do a lot of 1 2 1 3 1 2 1 4 patterns. check the snare drum for this you will see what i mean.

    It took me years to get into Meshuggah, never got it and I definitely didn't like this track. The vocals, the style, it just sounded like a repetitive mess. After going down the Gojira and Tool rabbit hole and having a bigger appreciation for rhythmical arrangements I finally started to understand the appeal of Meshuggah.
    Not only now are they my favorite band but can appreciate Chaosphere in all of its glory.
    The rhythms are so tight and syncopated but also have weird time signatures, accents, and mutes. Just when you think you caught it and went a couple chugs longer than you thought it was going to or it dropped out and restarted again quicker than you thought.
    There is no melody in Meshuggah songs all parts are rhythm including the vocals, that is why Jens is always typically in the same key much like Gojira does.
    It isn't a style for everyone but when you get it, there isn't another band on the planet that comes close to these guys IMO.

  • @02SplinterCell02

    Their music video songs are their worst IMO, this one included. Their true art is in their "deep cuts" such as Closed Eye Visuals, Pineal Gland Optics, Marrow, Stifled, etc.
