The lead guitarist is Fredrik Thordendal.
He made a STRANGE solo record in the late 90's with LOADS more GENIUS originality - only the fusion jazz influence, which i think in large part inspired "it all"[meshuggah], is VERY obvious. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend listening to it! Its been my favourite record for years!
Fredrik Thordendals Special Defects - Sol Niger Within.
Its abt. 43 mins and lists as 31-33 songs, so its recommended to listen to many at once ;P all structured like a sick, twisted classical adventure. The theme is very philosophical, alien and phychological. I recommend either listening to it from the start or going in from the second organ part at about 26 minutes in. ;p and yes, you read correctly, organ part.
He just reentered the band's touring lineup after some years break and has worked on- and recorded for-, a second solo release during this hiatus. Its process is largely unknown, but a record could also come out at any time really. ;p

The first two parts of this song are so absolutely genius and amazing I love it, the first part is very tense and tight and it goes on for just a little bit longer than comfortable, making you long for the holy moment when the tension gets released. And then there's this half a second of break that makes you think the moment arrived. But no, it gets even more intense and violent, the thightness left for sheer power and rage but the tension is very much still there, which is a very smart way of making it even longer, just to make it even more satisfying when the tension does finally drop and the grooves come in. Things like this are why I love Meshuggah so much

People will tell you that the drums on this track were programmed but they are wrong, the drums were done live by Haake on I, they are thinking of the album Catch Thirtythree, where each band member programmed some of the drums for the album. There is video of Tomas Haake in the studio behind the drumkit actually recording parts of I.

Commenting before he even starts the song, but in case you didn't know Geebz they deliberately wrote this song to have random breaks in the patterns, to the point where Tomas and Frederik had to record most of the song bar by bar just to get a finished studio version. Its the reason it'll likely never be played live apart from the endurance needed, becuase in Tomas' own words "nobody knows how to play I"

I then proceeded to discover their discography, starting with their later stuff. It was not an easy journey but I eventually became well aquainted with that part of their career. I had listened to I at least once, and I failed to appreciate it fully, especially that first hectic part.
While trying to appreciate their early work, i was amazed to grasp the sheer scale of their evolution over time. I must admit the mix of Chaosphere prevents me from enjoying it. Nothing was also very hard to get into but I now get most of it.
I knew I had yet to listen to I once again though, and I was a bit anxious to see whether I would manage to appreciate it genuinely. I was very glad to find that I now absolutely love that first part ! It's as compelling as Catch 33 !!
I must say I am tremendously grateful to Meshuggah for improving my musical taste enough so that I can enjoy myself a nice bit of Car Bomb.
@Geebz, you should review a bit of Car Bomb by the way. It think their work is even more weirder (in a good way) than Meshuggah's !

Can’t believe you actually did this one. Legend! The song that really got me into this band. Something about it clicked with me and I’ve loved them ever since. 10:41 in this video is one of my favorite moments in the song. Just so powerful.
Worth noting the drums on this are actually samples because the song was too random and changed too much while writing it. The samples are actually from their drummer though, using Drumkit From Hell, a plug-in he recorded drums for.
Love what you said about the hi hats too. That’s the only way to know how to headbang to this band 😂

I really really wanna near you tackle Converge. As a band, Jane Doe - You Fail Me - and No Heroes - are their best albums.
However - it’s not even just the band I want you to check out - it’s cause Jacob Bannon, the singer, also has s label called “Deathwish” and the guitarist Kurt Ballou is also a producer and has produced some of their best music -but Deathwish/Kurt Ballou has made such a massive impact on the underground hardcore/metalcore. Nothing as mainstream as Meshuggah or gojirs or anything - but that’s not really the kind of music they tend to record.
But i would love to hear you so the song “Heaven in her Arms” by Converge. And then follow them down the Converge/deathwish/kurt ballou rabbit hole (cause I’m sure you will get thousands of suggestions after uou do a reaction t any of their songs from Jane Doe
(Jane doe is always in the top 50 best metal albums on big websites and magazines bsck in the day )

Yes, one of the best things about Meshuggah is how they manage polyrhythms : there can be dozens of odd and highly complicated rhythms going around all at once, or just a few, but there will ALWAYS be that dominant squared one, firstly to let you cling onto it and not get lost, but most importantly because that's the foundation of the whole composition, it's what everything's revolving around. What's the use of doing all these fancy tricks if you can't understand what they're based on? It'd be like preparing hot dogs, and using extra fancy and special bread, homemade original recipee sauce, amazing bonus ingredients that were never before seen in a hotdog, but forgetting to put in the actual hotdog sausage at the end. Suddenly what could have been an amazing dish becomes just a sum of random ingredients that don't make sense lol

    • @vorpalblades

@@vorpalblades depends how you want to define beat displacement vs polyrhythm. The snare playing 9 against the hats 4 is definitely polyrhythm.

You would totally love a band called Samael. In the late 80’s-early 90’s they were Black Metal.
Then something happened and the drummer started programming his stuff in order to focus on the accoutrement.
Long story short…debut in that catalogue was “Passage”.
From that album…you should check out “Moonskin”.
I bet you can figure out the keys immediately.

@ 12:07, that section (i was on drums...) is absolutely impossible for any instrument. We were gonna attempt this as a cover performance and that segment tanked the whole thing. The blasts are so fast and random but so precise it is mind boggling, truly mindboggling.

4:3 between snare and cymbal, then add the kicks

    • @empyrean-jamelgreaves8034
      @empyrean-jamelgreaves8034 Год назад +1

@@failuretolaunchdrums Not really buddy, the 4:3 is easy enough but the kicks are super random and even more precise, the first lot is like 43 kicks, then 37, then 29, then 49, then a stack of 50 twice, repeat, then that double 50 again and one more 50 leading into that blistering solo. But the places they start are even more random, like starting on the 13th 32nd note random. Whats even worse is the guitar AND bass is synced to this insane rhythm so it cant be half assed at all.
We wanted to do this for a college gig but that segment is just too much. Sure, you can do a quick 4:3 with fast double kicks but since guitar, bass and kick drum all have to be locked in there, you'll all sound like idiots, there's no way you'll all be in time.
Man, I'd love to live in the heads of people like you, the world must be boringly simple though. If you tried to learn this part for more than 30 seconds, you'd immediately see why "4:3 between snare and cymbal, then add the kicks" falls hilariously short of anything even remotely resembling advice for this beast; but do try. I'll await your cover eagerly ;)

@@empyrean-jamelgreaves8034 god if only the world was boringly simple in my head; would solve half of my problems. Do you have any footage of these college sessions? Could be a really great learning tool for everyone looking to learn the song more efficiently/get another perspective.
Speaking on perspective, though, I’ve shown this song to some close friends who like other styles of music, and the results varied. Most can’t be bothered to sit through the whole thing. A few appreciated it for what it is, albeit don’t consider this Meshuggah’s best song, and only one person was visibly blown away by it. Imagine yourselves playing in that college auditorium… perhaps in front of your peers and their families, friends, partners, etc. You manage to perform the song to perfection and y’all are blown away that you did it… but after the majority of the uninitiated put their phones down to golf clap, you change over the stage, etc… The next performer performs Uptown Funk to a massive roar of applause.
I’d be stoked to have seen your hypothetical set, though. Cheers.
