So the Opeth harsh vocal gateway drug struck again, huh? That's the story for me, too, and I lot of others from what I've read in comments over the years. It really does open you up to so much more great metal music! There have been studies about how there may be mental health benefits to listening to metal music. New Millennium Cyanide Christ is one of my favorite songs ever. You should check out the music video for that one on your own time, it's freaking awesome.
Haha "I became obsessed with this track" is how it starts. Back in '08 I was into heavy stuff, but needed clean vox and melody as an anchor. "Bleed" was my gateway drug and what hooked me on Messhuggah. Keep listening, and you'll find that Meshuggah isn't just heavy for the sake of it, but about cultivating an atmosphere that is paradoxically peaceful and hypnotic. When you dive deeper and read the lyrics you'll find they're bursting with passion and the music is almost spiritual and tribal. TL;DR: I now put on Meshuggah to help me sleep because it lulls me into such a special place. I have been listening to Bleed for 16 years and it hasn't gotten stale, and no other track takes that cake. They also put on the best live show I've ever seen in my life. They're old dudes now and, at least for now, still capable of playing this material live, with the most intense and massive light show I've ever seen in heavy music. Saw them late last year for the first time, worth the wait. After long hiatus, they played "Bleed" for the first time in ages, and it was a religious experience.
Thank you for sharing your reaction with us! Your comments about what makes these songs replayable resonated with me a lot. I think Meshuggah have mastered the ability to write songs that are catch your attention during the first listen but somehow still continue unfolding to reveal new treats as you listen again and again.
Destroy Erase Improve (DEI) is a great starting point for the earlier "pre success" stage of Meshuggah's evolution - they've got older albums - just as good, but this one is a gem you don't hear about much these days.
Well I started with this album 20 years ago. And when Catch 33 came out I couldn’t stand them anymore. Too much sludgy slow metal all sounds the same. DEI was their peak.
This was awesome!! Absolutely made my day to see you love the Shug this much! They're such rhythm gods and you seem to be getting it! Super excited to see your Meshuggah journey! 👊
Hell yeah. Meshuggah is probably the most influential metal band of the last 30 years. My personal favorites are Rational Gaze and Combustion. Both are different to the ones you have reacted too. Rational Gaze is more groovy, and combustion is more upbeat and has much more melody.
@daviddorantes4292 slipknot did not exist. Pantera maybe, At the gates was influential for years, but melodeath isn't really as big as it used to be. I'd argue that more bands sound like they are trying to be meshuggah, with a touch of Pantera.
You described the perfect way to enjoy meshuggah, listening to it repeatedly, and getting to know the rythm. And once you get it locked in it energizes you like nothing else!
Jent and me-shu-guh. Bleed is an astonishing song. It took Tomas Haake more than 6 months to learn, has more changes than are apparent and requires superhuman dexterity. He is playing hertas with his feet, triplets with his left hand and ghost notes with his right. And it is all in 4/4, while what is going on around him is ever changing- polymeters, not polyrhthyms!
@@vorpalblades I think too many people consider Meshuggah to be a band that only works in polyrhythms. But bleed is actually just in 4/4, so what is happening is that while the other musicians are rotating their rhythms, every now and again they all come together. That builds the tension and release in the song. It’s such an amazing composition.
This may be my favourite reaction to three of my all time favourite songs I've ever seen. I first heard meshuggah just after Destroy, Erase, Improve was released and Future Breed Machine was my first track. I can honestly say that at that time it was utterly unique. No one sounded quite like meshuggah, something that's carried on to this day. So glad you vibe with them, and especially those really heavy bits. Hope they stay with you as long as they have me! 🤘
The tracks you listened to here are classics but here are some more recent ones you should check out that (IMO) are much better: Nostrum, The Hurt that Finds You First, Marrow.
That's SO interesting that you said Bleed helps calm you. Meshuggah and Neurosis' epic "Through Silver in Blood" record calm me, even at their most intense moments. Even more interesting is that Through Silver in Blood is just as heavy as Meshuggah, but in about the most opposite way that you could imagine. Slow, brooding, drum circles, endless spins around the most violent whirlpool in the entire ocean, yet centering and calming. The sad thing about that record is that it will never be played live again 😞 Tied for the most intense thing I've witnessed musically.
Clockworks, the drum cam video, will give you a great example of the technical skill of the drummer and why Meshuggah tend to be on so many heavy musicians top band lists
It is so cool to see a reaction to Bleed that doesn't concentrate on only the drummer's ridiculous double bass skills. I mean, I am a drummer, so of course that is what I hear when I listen to the song. Sometimes I totally miss out on all the other incredible musicianship going on. Great reactions! You have a new fan!! 😁
Great reaction! I also discovered them this year and like you I got obsessed with Bleed and went deeper from there. I couldn't listen to any other music for months :) And I've never listened to any metal before (and pretty much still don't apart from Meshuggah). There are so many good tracks (although many of them need a couple of listens, obviously) Best albums IMO: ObZen, Nothing, Immutable and Catch 33. Happy rabbit hole spelunking!
this is THE most wholesome thing I have seen on the internet. I have a feeling you would love their song "The Mouth Licking What at You've Bled" by them, I guarantee it actually
Omg, you just happen to explore my two favorite bands for the past 20 years :D When you covered Blackwater Park I thought about recommending Meshuggah, but I dont think I did lol ...glad someone else did ❤ New Millenium is also my favourite track along with the Chaossphere album. Because it's more lyric-based. But thats just personal taste. Meshuggah has done alot. Their latest album is also superb with some ridiculously good riffs. When you get lost in the rytm, a tip is to listen for the hi-hat - it's there most of the time in the background somewhere, nailing it down for you. ❤
If you liked new millennium then I'd love to see you listen to Corridor of Chameleons. Also, my friend It's spelled djent It's said jent, or gent. The D be silent.
every album by them is a different adventure in the same awesome game, they started happy and evolved to darker endboss vibes lately, my favorite band for 15 years now. Have fun adventuring :)
Meshuggah is extreme music that you can space out to, I love it. I'd absolutely recommend 'Born in Dissonance' and 'The Broken Cog', they're walls of sound I'll never grow bored of.
A few thrash metal bands that I grew up with! Forbidden- Forbidden evil, Dark Angel- darkness descends, CelticFrost- morbid tales, Kreator- extreme aggression! Just a few you might want to check out! Keep up the good work can’t wait to see you next video!
Your excitement is infectious! Keep it up! Give us a weekly reaction to a new Meshuggah track or something :D I'd be super down for all Meshuggah reactions
I think music like this grows on you, your taste grows and wants something stronger. I saw them recently with my daughter, about 3/4 the way through the set she was like I need to get out of the front front row I can't breathe. The show was very very heavy. But the last 1/4 of the show at the back was a nice mix to see everything from a distance. Killer show, also In Flames was killer too.
Future Breed Machine was the first Meshuggah song I ever heard after I bought the album back in the day and WOW... it blew me away. It was like nothing else at that time. I remember telling my friend "It constantly sounds like they are going to fall apart at any moment and then it switches to a new part and starts crushing again". Still one of my favorite tracks they ever put out.
Stumbled upon this and i really enjoyed this watch! Ill explore more of your videos :) Dont know how your channel works yet, but if you want suggestions? Cult of Luna - The Wreck of SS needle or why not the entire themed album Cult of Luna - Mariner, should be a mindblowing experience :)
so glad u reached out meshuggah! pls keep listening and recording this discover, they have so many other great songs. Hope u film a full album reaction :)
I totally agree with what you said about the overstimulating wall of sound actually calming you down. I'll often specifically put that kind of stuff on when I do meditative artwork for the same reasons haha. Another couple of bands you may enjoy for similar reasons if you haven't already heard them are Ulcerate (simultaneously very melodic and discordant, drummer is incredible) and Beyond Creation (very melodic tech/death metal that ebbs and flows very organically).
Meshuggah Obzen album is one of the most incredible albums from beginning to end that you'll ever hear and I fully understand what you're saying about it calming you down it does the same thing for me it always has been hooked since I discovered this band a long time ago I saw them on their 25th anniversary tour up in Chicago at the Vic theater they were amazing it was like a sea of people just flowing smoothly
I really love your reaction videos, it's fun to see your genuine excitement in listening and learning about new music or bands. I think this video reaction of yours is my new favorite vid regarding Meshuggah's music. I don't know if you have a musical background or if you play any musical instruments but you seem to have a real keen sense on what is going on in the music and articulate that well in your reactions. Bravo! Here are some suggestions on further exploration of Meshuggah's music that I would be interested in seeing your reaction to: "I" (at 21 minutes long, the band's first foray into creating a long form musical rollercoaster ride inside a black hole of insane heaviness, I love it) "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion", "Clockworks", "Straws Pulled At Random" (the original from 2002, not the 2006 remixed version. That's just me, though), "Combustion", "Dancers To A Discordant System", "Demiurge", " and "Catch ThirtyThree" (the whole album, is one long continuous song separated by the titles of the different sections throughout). I look forward to your next reaction video no matter which band's music you are reacting to!
What a great video, Meshuggah justo hits so hard. Maybe you'd enjoy banda like Tesseract, Monumenta or Karnivool, if you are down to experiencing a bit more of the genre. Thanks for your take on the music we love, great job.
Amazing reactions, really fun to see someone geek out to meshuggah! Polyrhythmics require active listening. There's multiple choices on "where you find yourself on the beat". Meshuggah is king on this stuff, and tool does quite well with it too. If in doubt, with meshuggah you can usually find a snare to headbang too. :)
Meshuggah is awesome, really heavy and cerebral stuff every single time, super groovy riffs, and Thomas Haake is an absolute beast of a drummer it's really easy to get lost in their grooves, especially because often each instrument does its own thing rhythmically you might've seen some by now, but there's really good videos explaining the insane rhythm fuckery in some of their tracks once you learn how it ticks, you only gain more appreciation for the band and the music :) nice reactions!
Extreme music always makes me want to get up and move and it's really nice to see you having the same reaction 😊 if you wanted a bit more djent, Sikth are masters of the genre. Behind The Door might be a good song to start, but they have some absolutely crazy songs if you dive down the rabbit hole.
@11:16 it's funny that you say that, because I'm experiencing the opposite. Meshuggah is my favourite band, but I went through a period where I listened to them so extensively it was CAUSING me unrest and anxiety. The hypnotizing pummeling grooves put me in a state of near paranoia
A Meshuggah song that has a pretty obvious groove to it would be "Rational Gaze" off their "Nothing" record. It's one of my favs up there with Bleed and New Milennium Cyanide Christ. Give it a listen some time...love to hear of another person who is relaxed by the heavier side of music, keep exploring!
I loved seeing how much you enjoyed this. New Millennium Cyanide Christ was also my favorite Meshuggah track for over 20 years, until it was finally dethroned by, "They Move Below."
"The Mouth Licking What You've Bled" is an excellent "introductory" cut. Chaosphere and Catch Thirty-Three are (quite confidently) this band's high water marks! Destroy. Erase. Improve. is an unmitigated classic [I, STILL, get stopped on the street when I wear my tour shirt from that tour!! - Not OFTEN, but: with great joy and respect whenever it occurs!! 🤘🤘] ...This band, definitely, have "s new breed" and "an old breed" of fans ...and (as, sadly, often seems to be an OVERALL attitude with younger listeners, period (🤷) ...It has been my experience that: newer, more contemporary fans, ignorantly & short-sightedly, often tend to "ignore" (or diminish) a fair amount of the earlier (and most vibrantly influential & effective!) of their music. Yes. ...Maybe that's "just me" (which would, STILL, be disappointing, but: less sad and disconcerting, overall. 🤷🤷). Anyhow: If you want the "immersive listen": Chaosphere and Catch Thirty-Three are, absolute, 100%, unequivocal, MUSTS!!!!🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction, this is a good showing of Meshuggah's older style. I was hoping Demiurge made the cut but maybe in the future! Some other cool bands that would be great for this channel could be Converge (anything off All we Love or Axe to Fall) or Igorrr (Savage Sinusoid or Spirituality and Distortion) would be incredible, both of these bands are garanteed to get you hyped up. Love the channel, keep up the good work
Knew you'd get around to this eventually! First time I heard Bleed back in 2009 it blew the top of my head clean off - I could not believe my ears. At the time I'd been taking a break from extreme metal for a while [except for doom, which is in my blood], but hearing this very track reignited so much for me - old and new.
Love seeing you get into Meshuggah, Kira. Obzen was the album that cemented me as a fan. If you want to understand more about some of the concepts going on behind the music, Ben Eller has an excellent video called "Stuff Meshuggah Does". Its goofy but explains the ideas (and beat counts) behind some of the songs better than anyone else I've ever come across.
This is just so pure and wonderful ❤️ Meshuggah are one of the most crushing bands out there but refreshingly original too, and there is definitely melody to be found in their discography (the second half of Straws Pulled at Random is gorgeous; definitely check that out at some point)! I just wanted to say thank you; I found this really engaging and genuine compared to other reaction channels. Opeth are my favourite band by the way and I love that Blackwater Park connected with you! Their albums Still Life and Ghost Reveries are also masterpieces 🙂
This was fun! Humble suggestion: If you search for [Troy Wright Koloss drum cover], it is a great medley/sampler of Meshuggah's Koloss album (my fav), and it highlights the incredible drum work.
First time on your channel, this was a really fun video. These are 3 of their best songs, it’s cool that you enjoyed them all. I noticed you do a lot of full album reactions on your channel and wanted to tell you about Meshuggah’s album Catch 33. Each song on the album flows seamlessly into the next as if the entire thing is one long song, so if you ever do a Meshuggah album reaction that would be a great pick!
Have a look at the New Millennium Cyanide Christ video, it must have cost them a few beers to produce. This song is such a headbang from start till the end 🤘
I still remeber watching your first reaction to rock music. You were so young, so new to distortion... 😂 I also knew right away you'll end up with Meshuggah eventually.

Amazing comment
yeah New Millenium Cyanide Christ is a highlight not only from their discography but all of metal.
I find it to be the most overrated track on Chaosphere.
@@george9822 unbased
a must listen is Humiliative!! came out before future breed macchine
Thank you for sharing your reaction with us! Your comments about what makes these songs replayable resonated with me a lot. I think Meshuggah have mastered the ability to write songs that are catch your attention during the first listen but somehow still continue unfolding to reveal new treats as you listen again and again.
I would love to see reaction to Gojira ( the french Band, not the King of the monsters, although...) and Wolves in a throne room.
Watch them live if you can. It’s overwhelming.
Destroy Erase Improve (DEI) is a great starting point for the earlier "pre success" stage of Meshuggah's evolution - they've got older albums - just as good, but this one is a gem you don't hear about much these days.
Interesting, Is meshuggah woke?
@@daveismoseley hahaa... I don't think so.
Pantera, At the Gates, Death, Slipknot all way more influential in that period of time
@daviddorantes4292 slipknot did not exist. Pantera maybe, At the gates was influential for years, but melodeath isn't really as big as it used to be. I'd argue that more bands sound like they are trying to be meshuggah, with a touch of Pantera.
More Meshuggah!!! Dancers to a Discordant System is my favorite metal song of all time.
you need to see them live, it's unreal.
Meshuggahs song Demiurge is my favorite driving song… I don’t think it’ll be healthy for me in the long run…
Demiurge has that riff about 2/3rds through, I legit find it to be the heaviest thing I've ever heard
You described the perfect way to enjoy meshuggah, listening to it repeatedly, and getting to know the rythm. And once you get it locked in it energizes you like nothing else!
24:47 since 1998, this will always hits hard
6:00 Meaw XD
Jent and me-shu-guh. Bleed is an astonishing song. It took Tomas Haake more than 6 months to learn, has more changes than are apparent and requires superhuman dexterity. He is playing hertas with his feet, triplets with his left hand and ghost notes with his right. And it is all in 4/4, while what is going on around him is ever changing- polymeters, not polyrhthyms!
There's a live drum cam video of bleed that I highly recommend
@@tajbaber9425 it’s remarkable, that video.
Finally, someone who knows the difference between polyrhythms and polymeter/beat displacement.
There are so many good tracks (although many of them need a couple of listens, obviously)
Best albums IMO: ObZen, Nothing, Immutable and Catch 33. Happy rabbit hole spelunking!
this is THE most wholesome thing I have seen on the internet. I have a feeling you would love their song "The Mouth Licking What at You've Bled" by them, I guarantee it actually
I saw Meshuggah open for Tool in 2002. You can hear both bands influence on each other in albums after 2002.
Omg, you just happen to explore my two favorite bands for the past 20 years :D When you covered Blackwater Park I thought about recommending Meshuggah, but I dont think I did lol ...glad someone else did ❤
New Millenium is also my favourite track along with the Chaossphere album.
Love it, very similar to how i got into meshughah and its great to see that experience validated.
If you liked new millennium then I'd love to see you listen to Corridor of Chameleons.
Also, my friend
It's spelled djent
It's said jent, or gent. The D be silent.
I love that you're grooving to Meshuggah and wearing a Daria shirt in 2024, into the same stuff I was into at your age (I'm guessing) in the 90s :)
12:03 "I" with 3 votes 😅 That would've been a quick 21 minutes. Apparently I've listened to that song 14 times since April 2022.
every album by them is a different adventure in the same awesome game, they started happy and evolved to darker endboss vibes lately, my favorite band for 15 years now. Have fun adventuring :)
Meshuggah is extreme music that you can space out to, I love it. I'd absolutely recommend 'Born in Dissonance' and 'The Broken Cog', they're walls of sound I'll never grow bored of.
Danny Carey of Tool is a Meshuggah fan. He goes to their gigs to get his mind blown by Tomas Haake's drumming.
He is the god of polyrythms.
The hyping Cyanide christ was an instant sub from me! Definitely the song that truly got me into Meshuggah 🤘
You should also give Fear Factory a spin.
Meshuggah has atmospheric melodies
Damn, such genuine excitement from a first time listening, you're in for an epic journey! Loved seeing the joy
Ill explore more of your videos :)
Dont know how your channel works yet, but if you want suggestions?
Cult of Luna - The Wreck of SS needle or why not the entire themed album Cult of Luna - Mariner, should be a mindblowing experience :)
so glad u reached out meshuggah! pls keep listening and recording this discover, they have so many other great songs.
Hope u film a full album reaction :)
Kira, it was so much pleasure to listen to my favourite Meshuggah songs with you❤
Thank you so much❤❤❤
Thank you for amazing vid. Had big smile all the way. Meshuggah just makes me happy❤
Loved the reactions :) You should listen to Clockworks, In death is Death, and Phantoms. Clockworks specifically is insanely good.
I look forward to your next reaction video no matter which band's music you are reacting to!
i love your reaction and how open your ears are to their sound. its the most addictive band for me personally
What a great video, Meshuggah justo hits so hard. Maybe you'd enjoy banda like Tesseract, Monumenta or Karnivool, if you are down to experiencing a bit more of the genre. Thanks for your take on the music we love, great job.
Love how you listen. Love these dudes. Theyre always ahead of the game. ❤🙌🤘
Meshuggah is awesome, really heavy and cerebral stuff every single time, super groovy riffs, and Thomas Haake is an absolute beast of a drummer
it's really easy to get lost in their grooves, especially because often each instrument does its own thing rhythmically
you might've seen some by now, but there's really good videos explaining the insane rhythm fuckery in some of their tracks
once you learn how it ticks, you only gain more appreciation for the band and the music :)
nice reactions!
The first time I ever saw Meshuggah live they opened with Future Breed Machine and it was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had.
"The Mouth Licking What You've Bled"
is an excellent "introductory" cut.
Chaosphere
and
Catch Thirty-Three
are (quite confidently) this band's high water marks!
Destroy. Erase. Improve.
is an unmitigated classic
[I, STILL, get stopped on the street when I wear my tour shirt from that tour!!
- Not OFTEN, but: with great joy and respect whenever it occurs!! 🤘🤘]
...This band, definitely, have "s new breed" and "an old breed" of fans
...and (as, sadly, often seems to be an OVERALL attitude with younger listeners, period (🤷) ...It has been my experience that: newer, more contemporary fans, ignorantly & short-sightedly, often tend to "ignore" (or diminish) a fair amount of the earlier (and most vibrantly influential & effective!) of their music.
Yes. ...Maybe that's "just me" (which would, STILL, be disappointing, but: less sad and disconcerting, overall. 🤷🤷).
Anyhow:
If you want the "immersive listen":
Chaosphere and
Catch Thirty-Three
are, absolute, 100%, unequivocal, MUSTS!!!!🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥
You are ready for “Between The Buried And Me”. The songs “Disease, Injury, Madness” and “Telos” have a great blend of heavy and soft.
Love the channel, keep up the good work
That middle/end riff is so heavy and groovy you can play it on loop and it doesn't old
Knew you'd get around to this eventually!
Loved your reaction and all, but is that a Daria/Donnie Darko crossover shirt? That's sick as hell and I want one.
YES IT IS, it's my second favourite shirt... behind my The Queen is Dead Smiths shirt hehe
Love your channel. If you like the contrast of light and heavy in Meshuggah's music, you can't go wrong with Straws Pulled at Random. A super heavy and beautiful song.
