- In the early 1980s not everyone had cable TV. In Los Angeles a sort of new wave American Bandstand was the alternative to cable's MTV. It was called MV3.
This syndicated music video show featured (1) the latest music videos as a backdrop to (2) local dancers and (3) lip synched performances by artists such as X, The Plimsouls, Lords Of The New Church, Oingo Boingo, Berlin, The Bangles, Missing Persons, English Beat, Thomas Dolby, Psychedelic Furs, Adam Ant etc.; artists that were currently being played on KROQ (Los Angeles).
Three hosts featured then KROQ DJ, Richard Blade, plus David Maples and Karen Scott.
Trivia: Blade and some of the regular dancers also appeared in an episode of "Square Pegs". Bret Easton Ellis mentions MV3 in his book "Less Than Zero".
Ever since Annette's return to The Bangles, I have been fascinated with their early career, I have their EP from 1982, I feel like I'm rediscovering them, & although I do like some of their more mainstream songs like "Manic Monday", I also discovered I like their early stuff with Annette better. So glad she came back to them.
I just can't get enough of this phase of the band. I am totally hooked. We were robbed of a great thing.
Bangles, 3 OClock, Green on Red, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, and my own lesser known but equally psychedlic pop band. That with the healthy punk, art, new wave scenes made L.A. a really fun place for music in the early 80s.
dailyflash It was known as "The Paisley Underground".
@dailyflash, what band were you in?
Great group, loved them since 1986, they were so much better when Annette was 1st with them.
Cool. I saw them at the Roxy back in '82 when they still had Annette Zilinskas as their bassist (before she split and joined Blood On The Saddle). MV3 was pretty much my favorite show back then, too!
I agree with some other posters here that their best output was the original "Getting Out of Hand/Call on Me" 45, their first EP (which includes this song), and their debut LP. Great stuff.
I love the Bangles even more as modettes! :-)
As with "The Real World", absolutely superb and a real joy to see.....
I had no idea early Bangles sounded so "Rubber Soul/Revolver-ish"! This is great stuff! Bass line faintly reminds me of "Tax Man". Good stuff!
I love the Bangs early raw garage sound, would have loved to be living in LA in the 80s, ❤ missed out on so much living in NZ ❤
I would have loved to have seen a Susanna Hoffs/Jane Wiedlin duet!
This was awesome, thanks! The Bangles are my favorite band of all time!!
I remember hearing “going down to Liverpool “ , and everyone was like, “UB40 is dole, man”. I was like, “yeah man, we have been listening to UB40’s “red, red wine” everyday for awhile now.” Still like the song.
bass line sounds exactly like "Taxman" and "Start" during the verses. Funny thing is I used to run home to watch MV3 after school in junior high.
X, The Bang(le)s, Plimsouls, 20/20, Rain Parade, Blasters, Los Lobos, The Go-Gos, The Plugz, John Hiatt, T-Bone Burnett, Naughty Sweeties, Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs, The Gun Club etc. etc. Madame Wong's (Chinatown and Santa Monica), The Central, Roxy and Whiskey, The Starwood(!), etc. etc. Two shows a night as a rule. It is hard to argue that there was ever a better indie music scene than that of the late 70s and early 80s in LA. What a time.
Paisley Underground. 😊🎼🎸
We had the best music.....by far
Oh man I remember this show. Thought that they were awesome then. Still do.
I agree! I had their first E.P (with this song on it) and they rocked! But I have to admit I went right off them when they had their '80s Power Pop Make-Over.
IRS records wanted another version of the Go-Gos.
@@wcatholic1 Yeah, it really seems that 5 seconds after Miles Copeland signed them, he handed them off to someone who didn't respect their music, and promptly forgot about them. It's too bad, "Manic Monday" was perfectly fitting for the original Bangles, and even "Walk Like an Egyptian" was okay as a novelty song that makes you money so you can do what you want... they could have gone back to their sound after that and had a career, but no the label didn't let them.
always been one of my favorite Bangles songs. Thanks for putting it up.
ladies and gentleman...The Bangles.....
wow.. felt like I was was back in Liverpool.. ca. 66' or so..
Rockin out on SHINDIG... Great !!
This is when they were at their best...
After they "made it" it was all downhill
thanks for the post
:)
This show used to be on 4pm in the midwest (Chicago) time.... And I NEVER missed a SHOW!
how cool is this though! I was little and I was inspired!!
I must of been around about 8 or so .... and ...
I remember being little and soaking it all in...
fashion and music and such...
Just so everyone knows, the original four are back together. They did a concert in 2019 at KAABOO that is just like this. It's great. It's amazing. It's simple. No Autotune or backing musicians. No extra synths or overdubbing. Just the way the Bangles were meant to sound. Just search on youtube "Bangles 2019 KAABOO" and you will find out exactly what I'm talking about.
Michael was my favorite Bangle but I liked Annette, too...great video, thanks.
Annette was prettier. ❤
What a cool White Flag t-shirt had Annette!!!
Cool
SuzySecret so glad she's back with them, maybe she can restore the edge they once had before they went mainstream & fame got the better of them.
This is SWEET! Thanks for posting
That was a popular riff to emulate among late 70s/early 80s 60s-revival bands. "Start!" by The Jam uses it, too.
Hopping jumping Susanna!!
Whooooh, she is exciting "mad" - ed
This is a great tune. love the sound.
I was part of all that scene too. Same bands, L.A. locations and my own bands too. Time to dust off the Beatle boots and striped pants.
What band were you in?
I've never seen this before and THIS sounds WAAAY better than their later mainstream sound( I could never stand Walk Like an Egyptian) why didn't they continue to rock like this????
Annette left.
@@RockabillyQueen Oh? She had a different kind of approach.
I got 2 Rickenbackers. Love Rickenbackers.
I saw them in 1982 at the Concert Factory in Costa Mesa with the Jets and some other Mod bands (3 o'clock maybe). We would go to the Circle City Club and then over to Midnight movies for Quadraphinia.
The midnight movies in Orange California?
You know, I do remember that show, it was shown on Channel 5 in NY when it was still WNEW, & I might remember seeing this back in 1983.
More talent than the Go Gos.
QUE BUEN VIDEO, NUNCA LO HABIA VISTO
Bang-LES, Beat-LES... I always thot they named themselves after the Beatles. This is the first time I ever heard this song, and I think my hunch was right. Thankfully, they left this style behind.
thunderbolt468 Ironically The Beatles were called The Silver Beatles & once "The Beat Boys", so they changed their name a lot too.
thunderbolt468 ironically The Beatles name was a tribute to Buddy Holly & The Crickets.
The Bangles didn't leave it, they enhanced it as the years went by.
thunderbolt468 Originally they were The Bangs or Supersonic Bangs until they had to change their names, They were once known as The Colors, as well. The name Bangles was both a tribute to The Beatles & to represent their style "to hang loose like a Bangle hangs on one's wrist. The style was cute, but the music was so much better.
Incredibly hot!!!
Just imagine Audrey Hepburn, Sandra Dee, Jane Fonda, & Goldie Hawn in a rock group. ❤
I'll forgive jane fonda when the jews forgive Hitler! Not gonna happen!
Saw them as the Bangs about 81? Still have the Bangs single on vinyl.
A versão femenina dos beatles. Muito bom!
LOve Debbi's look! Looks like Goldie Hawn ala Laugh-In, behind the kit.
Rat Ghost me too.
Thats because she came in very close before they started to record All Over The Place, and didn't had the time to write any songs. Michael's 8 songs are usually considered among the best efforts by the Bangles fans. She sang on Doll Revolution three songs without any record label in sight, and them having full control. But what do Susanna, Vicki, and Debbi know anyway. ;)
@DeathtrapDungeon I love you Deathtrap,...You are so in my veins on all things....THIS
Annette is so cute! Bass like a toilet lid is also pretty damn good!
the duke caracas venezuela..........iiii looooveee youuuuu
look better and sound better than they ever have...
Ah Man they look so hott!!!!!
ah how fun it is listening to people argue in cyberspace lol....
@eazye0512 Thank you for telling it the it is! Annette may be returning to the band later this year( 2010 )
Ha, sadly I was a lot older than eight then! Don't remind me that I'm gettin' old...lol
I think the Rain Parade was the opening band when I saw them. Not 100% sure -- I saw so many concerts back then that they become a blur. I saw the Bangles with the Three O' Clock (and two other forgotten bands) at the now-defunct Pomona Valley Auditorium (PVA) back in '84. I just remember dozens of Vespa scooters lined up in the parking lot, driven by mods. Good times, good times.
The 80s just weren't the right time for this sound and style. Absolutely no chance the band would have taken off if they'd stuck with this, enjoyable as it is.
If I had a dying wish (other than spend the last remaining moments with my dear friend,) it would be to have a private concert with the 4 original Bangles,(Annette included ).
I never knew they had a clip for I'm in Line! WOW. I dug thus song as much as the Real World. Everybody knows American Bandstand, Soul Train, and they likes were lip synced but dig it, this is a classic performance by a group with the original lineup (Annette Z) and a song that you will likely never ever never hear them perform again on stage. Suzanna is super sex kitten sexy with the bob cut and mod dress.
Actually I think it's the distinct sound of the Rickenbacker guitar. The Jam, Beatles, Bangles all have em - but Susana definitely has the sex appeal.
Debbi looks like Goldie Hawn from the '60s.
C'est vrai qu'il y a un peu de ça et cela me fait penser à un film de Goldie Haw que j'adore Cactus Flower.
Yeah The Bangles is like the Girls version of The Beatles. Susanna Hoffs plays Rickenbacker and so did The Beatles. On my Rickenbacker's I play Beatles and Bangles stuff also my own songs I write.
You'd never guess from this video that Susanna Hoffs would become a sex symbol. Their "look" really masked what a gorgeous woman she was. But I agree with the other comments that the Bangles had a much cooler sound before they got popular.
No one was more let down by their change in style after their EP. All over the Place was a mess despite it having a couple of catchy tracks. I too loved them dressed this way and being a 60's type garage pop band. Annette was way cute too. She would later quit them and join Blood on the Saddle.
The Pandoras did the same damn thing.
MV3: The Precursor to "Video One"
This is called the good ole days....MTV sucked as did most of the top 40 and hair metal of the 80s. Lucky for us kids in LA there was Rodney Bingenheimer, college radio stations and bands like the Bangles, X, The Three O'Clock, The Untouchables, Fishbone, Minutemen, the Pandoras.....to many to name. And there was MV3 on channel 9.
The Bangles - short-haired!!!! Wow, how girlish!
WOW, even better than The Modettes... Dem's fightin wurdz....
@wildnites558 TOTALLY!!!! I love Laugh-In!
Female version of The Beatles Love It
The "Fem" Beatles...wow!...sure changed their looks too huh?
Loved the Bangles in the 80s. Great 60s influences nice Taxman riff (or did they catch The Jam performing Start! on U.S tv? great stuff though..
Listen to Day Tripper...ooooo Bangles LOVED the Beatles,..dare say my maidens borrowed a tad
Not only was their sound better pre-mainstream, their look was better too, in my opinion - more in keeping with their mid-60s sound. Susanna's 60s-cut minidress and flat 60s shoes look way better than the 80s spandex minidresses and shoulder pads they wore later on.
Bassist was Annette Zilinskas at this time. She was later replaced by Michael Steele.
Uh, yeah, they sound about 100,000 times better live, they are a kick-ass live band.
@huskyjerk I believe it's live, it's not the same as the original version and they were amazing live! They sounded way better live then their recordings the music and the vocals. I was very lucky to have seen them many times in small clubs before they became big. I really think they were much better and a lot more fun before the record company got hold of them and turned them into glittery sexy girls instead of the cute, cool, hipsters they used to be.
The Go-Gos by comparison had a harder, rougher sound live than their studio recordings.
ruclips.net/video/WrfjfA2Jyys/видео.html This is their live sound.
Crashsite, You are a GOD! I totally remember some of these clips! Do you have full shows?
Got a music rag that has them as the Bangs.
Sometimes "les" is more.
Yes that is what I heard., that they hadn't gotten any recording done yet and once they were about to start, they found out another group had recorded unde the name Bangs already. I think Bangles sounds better and is nto as derogatory, anyway, so lucky happenstance, tho it probably ticked themoff a bit at the time.
Always prefered their earlier stuff.
whoa is that Annette Zilinskas on bass?
Yep.
Are you people insane? This is brilliant! Go out and buy the Real World EP. Classic Paisley Underground stuff and Susanna Hoffs is a hottie. What? Look, Egyptian, etc. are good too but this is garage rock at it's Rodney on the Roq best.
If it weren't for that Rick, I wouldn't know that was Susanna Hoffs. I'm still not completely sure. LOL They look more like the Go Gos here. The Beatles-style head-shaking is a bit disturbing. I didn't like it when the Beatles did it, either.
@wildnites558 TOTALLY!!!
Great look and sound. Wish they'd go back to that...the bassist isn't bad looking either.
This sounds more 1962 than 1982.
It's that Paisley Underground "60's revival" sound.
@Sam Bradley: Um...you must be a snowflake. Hardly the early '60s. More like mid'60s with the Beatle song.
anyboby know what annette is doing these days? wonder if they asked her to come back and fill michaels spot.
She came back, she is a Bangle once again. 🎼🎸
Do they perform any of the pre All Over the Place tunes in concert?
What happened to the video???
It used to be full screen...now it's only the upper left quadrant.
+screendude69 Yeah, for me too. There's another HQ version that is full screen. Still grainy as fuck.
Where is it...what's the title?
By the way, The Bangles were originally called The Bangs.
Thanks for replying.
Found it on vimeo, here's a link.
www.dailymotion.com/video/x1xaex_bangles-i-m-in-line_music
Thanks for the link.
all band performances on MV3 were lip-synched as far as I know.
Same with most shows in that vein. Always played the studio cuts. They, like the Go-Gos have a rougher sound live.
Why is the video image so small?
@BeccaGSD Just ignore CatchyJ. To me it's obvious he/she doesn't know much about music. Miss Steele is one of the finest bassplayers I've ever heard, and I feel sorry for CatchyJ, who think it's more important to be fun and cute, than to know your intstrument...he/she has obviously missed the point.
I know for sure those gals where lip syncing that tune, I saw the bangles in concert and let's just say.....They sound a lot different live and that's all I have to say about that.
Most bands do.
A bit of Mamas and the papas happening melody wise
Don't forget it has a little bit of the beatles taxman basslines too
@CatchyJ You are simply trying to ruffle feathers. Make you feel importent???
Taxman

There is something quite interesting about a girls band named the bangs... Hmmmmm
Did they have a different bass player back then? This doesn't look like Micheal Steel.
+imkluu Oh, I found it, they had a bass player named Annette Zallinska (sp) back then.
Yes, she quit after the first album to join her boyfriends band. Oooops
tryithere
I think she may be playing with them again, now, I heard that when Michelle decided not to rejoin them they got their original bass player.
Ah yes, the early 80's-
When every hot blonde chick chopped off their long manes so they could "look" like Lady/Princess Diana (May she rest in peace, poor lady)
And Debbi Peterson was no exception...
Annette should go back to them!
is this lip sync?
?! Looks fine to me. She's got a short haircut, and she's not a rail thin model, plus she's tiny.
@lch2365 ???????//
A-Fucking Men
