"All Over the Place" had a great sound. I saw them around this time with the Hoodoo Guru's as an opening act. The Bangles rocked way harder than most people expected, excellent live band.
The improvised guitar break and tambo! So cool. No one dare pull that on live TV back then or now. Everyone always performs the studio versions of everything these days. The Bangles are such good live.
I had an incredible crush on Susanna Hoffs when I was a teenager in the 1980's. Watching these old videos reminds me of why. She has got to be one of the sexiest, most beautiful women of our time. Love her voice too. She was alweays such a sweet and humble person. I never got the impression that her success, talent, or goddess like good looks ever went to her head. What a woman.
Coolest girl group ever. And this tune is one the main reasons why. Great rock and roll from a no-joke, no-gimmicks foursome in this early live clip. Their live vocals were always fantastic.
You don't dance like that unless the music and the vibe is ELECTRIFYING every part of your brain!!!! If there's one thing you could say about these five musicians (Annette, included) was that they have PASSION !!!!
This was from a letterman aniversary show and it just blew me away.. I was an instant fan ! I saw them from the second row in a small venue in portland Or. and they put on the best show I have ever seen ! The place went crazy !!
I remember seeing this live in 1984 - so much real live energy from the gals - they were authentic at this time - yes, a KILLER song, awesome harmonies! - I luckily VCR'd this Letterman show and must have replayed it so many times I wore out the tape showing it to my friends. The damn radio DJ's didn't give these girls the credit they deserve- too many comparison to the Gogo's who didn't have 1/10 the talent or musical stamina of the Bangles. I hear this now in 2017 and think how David Grohl must have been infuenced a little by the Bangles and no disrepect to grohl - he is a rock god. But these girls tore up those guitars and drums with awesome harmony.
The vocal harmonies of these ladies are unmatched (all due respect to Heart and the Wilson sisters who paved the road for others) and they kick ass on guitar too
Great video! I remember watching this show. I bought their EP when they were the littlest of Bangles. Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories. Saw them in 85, 86 & 88, I believe it was.
wow!! Proof positive, in case anyone needed any, that the Bangles were a GREAT live band.. these girls could REALLY play & sing well- Debbie in particular ROCKIn' those drums!!
I love this version; better than the studio cut. Only thing I can't figure out is, what the director had against Michael Steele (bassist). She was the one who had my heart fluttering, and the director keeps cutting her out of the frame! Bastard!
It was their best album. Studio producers interfered more and more with their song selection and arrangements with every succeeding album, saddling them with gimmicky covers ("Egyptian") with the goal of making Susanna into the sex kitten superstar. In the process the other three members were neglected.
It seems to be a live performance. I did buy this album based on hearing this single one time. Good to see the Les Paul and Strat combo. Ominious words "Here it comes, here it comes." Pain
Dan Hartman sang "I could dream about you" before the Bangles performed "Hero takes a fall." Dan was just blah in his performance...that's why Dave Letterman said "Now we're getting somewhere" after the Bangles performed their song.
My wife had the same cut back then (part of the reason I asked her out was that she reminded me of Susanna). The best part is that the fashions change, but it is still great music.
Outstanding performance. And Vicki can play a mean Les Paul. No camera on Michael, though. BO-O-O-O-O!! Susanna had a serious case of the cutes, but her footwork was inspired.
Bangles mis felicitaciones tocan magistralmente todas las melodías excelentemente qué papá Dios las bendiga por siempre son personas maravillosas y muy especiales saludos y les mando un fuerte abrazo cuidense mucho.
On this day in 1984 {August 25th} the Bangles performed "Hero Takes A Fall" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... The song peaked at #96 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart, it did not make Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart... Between 1986 and 1989 the Los Angeles quartet had eight records on the Top 100 chart, four made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Walk Like An Egyptian" for 4 weeks on December 14th, 1986 and "Eternal Flame" for 1 week on March 26th, 1989... Their other two Top 10 records both peaked at #2*, "Manic Monday" for 1 week in April of 1986 and "Hazy Shade of Winter" for 1 week in February of 1988... * The week that "Manic Monday was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "Kiss" by Prince and the Revolution; and the week that "Hazy Shade of Winter" was at #2, the record in the top spot for that week was"Could've Been" by Tiffany...
thing is, Prince had not met the bangles yet when this was aired. he met them around early 85 or so. if he did meet them in 84, it was in late 84. he took notice of them when he stumbled across the hero takes a fall video and then this very performance. the Hoff starting doing her eye thing as far back as 83. but i do agree with you in that early bangels, all over the place and back, were much better than commercial bangles.
Seinfeld's "Puffy Shirt" episode was in 1993, so it took 9 more years for societ yto turn its back on shirts like that. "It was the 80s" is an oft used refrain to explain fashion choices like that.
Did not know that the Ricky was SH's sig guitar. V Les Paul AND Strat? Wow! Woman's right to change her mind. All Over the Place has a great guitar sound.
david letterman show 1984, bangles and then david byrne of the "talking heads". what happen to late night show biz or what happen to dave? or what happen to the music?
They were famous enough in fall of 84 to get on late night? (Well, Letterman wasnt quite as big then as he is now). They were still only the opening act for Cyndi Lauper at that time. I never heard Hero Takes a Fall until I bought the album. Curious how they flew under the radar
+SpreadingtheMuse Letterman often times would put lesser known bands on his show if he liked them. He had the Gossip on a few years ago and they are not extremely well known in the U. S. He would take chances with groups now and then.
+SpreadingtheMuse Letterman often times would put lesser known bands on his show if he liked them. He had the Gossip on a few years ago and they are not extremely well known in the U. S. He would take chances with groups now and then.
SpreadingtheMuse oh i remember them! hero takes the fall video captivated. i fell in love with vicki and sue was cooler than raybans. I got it on tape off a richard blade video show on channel 9. i never once heard of liverpool as a single tho.. i still dont get why they chose that one. Manic Monday was certainly bigger in a pop sense but Hero takes a fall definitely made a big splash
Before the internet, the main way to become "known" was FM radio. But the DJ's who picked up on the Bangles made too many comparisons to the recent new band, the GoGo's and this The Bangles were lkabelled as a "Girl Band" even though they had much more talent, energy and more writting cred than the GoGo's. I saw them in 2015 and they still shred there guitars and have perfect harmony. They are a class act
@rjpancerniCAUSA Kinda funny to see Susanna playing a Fender instead of her signature Rickenbacker. Vickie has gone back and forth between the Les Paul and a Strat during her "career".
I think that the looking hard left and hard right calmed her nerves. Like the way that Bacall used to lower her chin to steady her head.....nerves also.
Mick Funny ha! dont u mean 2:45.560-2:45.849? lololololol i meant for an extended shot like they gave the other girls. They sequentially go thru each, except Mick. So is this a rabid fan that names themselves after their idols, or have u been graced by the bassist, herself?
"All Over the Place" had a great sound. I saw them around this time with the Hoodoo Guru's as an opening act. The Bangles rocked way harder than most people expected, excellent live band.
I was in a band that covered Bittersweet. Great band.
This album is woefully underrated. The vocal harmonies the attain still give me shivers 30 years later.
chronosynclastic8
what?
its pretty much undisputed that its their best album by a landslide. altho doll revolution could give it a run for its money
Musically I think this was their best album.
Suggest you wear a warm coat then!
Their best stuff was their single and ep as The Bangs!
The improvised guitar break and tambo! So cool. No one dare pull that on live TV back then or now. Everyone always performs the studio versions of everything these days. The Bangles are such good live.
A site compendiating all their appearances states that this number and GDTL were recorded shortly before going live.
My favourite band. The Bangles. Influenced so many bands. Bless.
Coolest girl group ever. And this tune is one the main reasons why. Great rock and roll from a no-joke, no-gimmicks foursome in this early live clip. Their live vocals were always fantastic.
great video. Love the raw sound & the look of the 80's. I miss those days in high school.

!!!!
I remember watching this live. It was a Letterman anniversary show. I miss the 80's.
Just superb, still one of my favourite Bangles tunes - sounds raw, unpolished and proper!!
Amazing ..totaly amazing..this is GOLD-television and the girls is here whit their first hit in 1984 ..i have and will always adore the bangles
I Love The Bangles, and I Always Will Love, Each and Every One of Them Forever
Totally agree Rich27014 - Always wished they'd show more of Ms, Steele
This was from a letterman aniversary show and it just blew me away.. I was an instant fan ! I saw them from the second row in a small venue in portland Or. and they put on the best show I have ever seen ! The place went crazy !!

It´s 2015 and i still love them!
KILLER song, awesome harmonies! Susanna really knows how to work the camera-always giving it those sexy, sly looks whenever it's on her!
I had a cassette tape of their first album. Cassette tape! Yes, I am old...(smiley face)
I have that too! 😄
Please.."Cassette"? that's high-tech!! first car I learned to drive had 8 - TRACK Player..lol
wow!! Proof positive, in case anyone needed any,
that the Bangles were a GREAT live band.. these girls

those drums!!
Classic !
Thanks for Posting !
BANGLES ROCK !
They always rocked more live; on record they sounded more polished. When Vicki took off on that solo, took the song to another place. Very well done.
A very good interpretation, beauty song, great sound and four beautiful guirls!
The best video I have ever seen of Bangles
I love this version; better than the studio cut. Only thing I can't figure out is, what the director had against Michael Steele (bassist). She was the one who had my heart fluttering, and the director keeps cutting her out of the frame! Bastard!
Grateful this was really live, cause I've seen videos from presentations on other shows, and they had to playback the songs.
I call the Bangles "The Angels" because that's what they sound like to me... and when I see them it just confirms it... : )
They have so much energy in this performance!
interesting, beserkley...
i always loved Michael most too, but i gotta say Vicki's 60's 'hot smoke and sassafras' sounding solo here totally kicks ass
no argument here!
This was a better album than the follow up "Different Light".
It was their best album. Studio producers interfered more and more with their song selection and arrangements with every succeeding album, saddling them with gimmicky covers ("Egyptian") with the goal of making Susanna into the sex kitten superstar. In the process the other three members were neglected.
She is just as amazing as they come
Which she? (There's four of them)
;-)
The Bangles rock!
I love them!!
George Vreeland Hill
Somewhere I have a VHS tape with Bangles on several UK TV programmes from 1984. One day I must look them out.
It seems to be a live performance. I did buy this album based on hearing this single one time. Good to see the Les Paul and Strat combo.
Ominious words "Here it comes, here it comes." Pain
I have always loved them.
First Bangles lp is incredible!
Michael Steele doing her best Mary Huff.
GREAT bass line.
Thank GOD for RUclips, so I can go back to seeing real TALENT in the making! 😄 I was only 8 at this time! I don't think my parents even had CABLE! 😳
Awesome, wish this could be higher resolution..
This was so long ago that I remember seeing pics that collectors used to buy--mainly behind the scenes polaroids of the band's "Hero Takes," video.
yeah they have that 60's sound too. great music.
Amazing oerformance!
That is a very beautiful Fender Stratocaster Susanna Hoffs is playing
here we have it. the band that inspired me to pick up a guitar and want to play it :)
LOVE Susanna Hoff - beauty and talent! Shes playing rhythm guitar here, though in later years, I seem to remember her switching to bass.
If you listen carefully, her rith-mic guitarra sou-nds great
great stage presence
To me, the best version of this song
@sparrowhawk72 : I still have the tape and it's worn down and pops. God knows how many times I played it. Love that album!
Thanks for posting! I have a ton of VHS I haven't gotten to!
Hero wished it was Sunday 🎶🎹🎸
totally obsessed by susanna hoffs>
Dan Hartman sang "I could dream about you" before the Bangles performed "Hero takes a fall." Dan was just blah in his performance...that's why Dave Letterman said "Now we're getting somewhere" after the Bangles performed their song.
BANGLES!!
My wife had the same cut back then (part of the reason I asked her out was that she reminded me of Susanna). The best part is that the fashions change, but it is still great music.
I don't think I ever saw Susanna play a Strat, only a Rick. She also got even better looking as time went on. Loved the band at this time.
fabulous!
This is awesome. Talented and sexy. Great memories of this song. Gutted Michael no longer with them.
Whoever thought putting Michael in the background was good for the band wasn't good for the band, and that is the tragedy of the Bangles.
absolutely. Very talented musician and singer who isn't given nearly enough credit
Outstanding performance. And Vicki can play a mean Les Paul.
No camera on Michael, though. BO-O-O-O-O!!
Susanna had a serious case of the cutes, but her footwork was inspired.
Bangles mis felicitaciones tocan magistralmente todas las melodías excelentemente qué papá Dios las bendiga por siempre son personas maravillosas y muy especiales saludos y les mando un fuerte abrazo cuidense mucho.

Early Bangles Video
The moment America fell in love with Susanna Hoffs!
This is a very fitting song right now,
with the latest Coronavirus news.
It's funny seeing Letterman hold up an album--it's massive!
@lemurianchick I still have a copy of that album!
Susanna's playing a Strat rather than her trademark black Rickenbacker.
Michael Steele's hair reminds me of the Gossamer monster character from the old Looney Tunes cartoons, lol.
(01686&680
medny omg the one bugs cuts n styles? lol YES!!!
That's the biggest Stratocaster I've ever seen!
Agree, frankly AOTP is their best album.

God, I love girls singing in chorus............
oh this mix hurts! Sound person fired!!
@Caprizonica You don't get it, Vicki is very cooley dressed in the underground "new romantic" look of the day....
AOTP is a really strong album. What year was this televised? The gurls are still wearing their CBS marketing look.
And no lip-synching, TG.
Vicki totally went for the Prince look here ! lol !
david letterman show 1984, bangles and then david byrne of the "talking heads".
what happen to late night show biz or what happen to dave?
Actually, it was December of 1983.
Suzanna❤

love watching these 'old' videos of my fav. girl (susanna) everything but that haircut... sheesh...;) cute lil' dance there though..
Jeez
I didn't know there was this much static on the screen
@berserkley
i agree with you
@rjpancerniCAUSA Kinda funny to see Susanna playing a Fender instead of her signature Rickenbacker. Vickie has gone back and forth between the Les Paul and a Strat during her "career".
@inputmodule Agreed!
I think that the looking hard left and hard right calmed her nerves. Like the way that Bacall used to lower her chin to steady her head.....nerves also.
As Susanna grew her hair out, her eyes became more prominent.
Actually I prefer her 90s hair, straighter and more natural.
they didnt show michael once.
great cameramen
Jarma right at 2:35 that's oh wait, is that a woman playing a bass?
Mick Funny
ha! dont u mean 2:45.560-2:45.849? lololololol

*35
Agree they didn't giver her enough screen time, but to be fair she is wearing a puffy shirt😭 And no, my avatar is not a Bangle, think Goodfellas.
Mick Funny ok i watched again.
Theres no close up.
they do closeups of the other girls
oh darn..susanna with her teenie bopper hair and vicky as a brunette...
All the guys liked Susanna, but I thought Vicki was totally Cool, she looked like she'd be a lot of fun....
@inputmodule No arguments here!
weee
Dave! What are you wearing? I always watched his Late Night Show and I never saw him dress so casual.
