Yeah, that really bugs the hell out of me, more than anything else in this movie: they _JUST_ look like the actual plastic figures.
Like, of _course_ they'd choose to make the character designs toy accurate for a film set in the _one part of the franchise_ where that decision only works to the film's detriment.
Just makes me think of what could have been. Can you imagine what getting a Bionicle 4 from Miramax would have been like? Getting to see what they'd come up with for the designs of the Agori and Glatorians?
I can't, because my brain is an oily mass of curdled milk and memes, but we both know it'd probably be fantastic.

I think the reason why the mask of life is able to upgrade their weapons was kind of explained in the movie. Most of the weapons are made of bone or from animals, so just like what happened to Mata Nui's improvised stinger knife being upgraded into a proper sword, he upgrades his allies weapons into something much better. Although don't ask me how they get elemental properties, I guess "Life" also extends to the elements???

The Ignika itself is very unusual in general. Much like Energized Protodermis, it is capable of simply upgrading, destroying, but most importantly transforming based upon “Destiny.” Which in hindsight, now makes sense, considering that the Ignika’s sole purpose is to restart the life of the giant robot powered by Energized Protodermis.

  • @Luka1180
    @Luka1180 2 года назад +33

Actually, the Ignika (the name of the Mask of Life) didn't create a more deadly weapon. It evolved the Glatorian to have elemental power. Mata Nui had sensed that down in their evolutionary line, they would eventually evolve to have natural elemental powers - I.E. the ability to harness and manipulate the elements, which are actually fundamental forces of the universe in BIONICLE canon. But it also changed the tools/weapons to be better suited for channeling said powers. The reason it can do that is that they're made of bone and/or claw, which are organic stuff. The Ignika can *only* evolve and devolve beings to stuff stuff that is in the species' evolutionary line. I.E. if their species has an ancestor or a shared ancestor that's a snake, they can be devolved into a snake. Hence what happened to Metus. Why it can do stuff with MUans that defy this, like changing Dekar into a replica of Hydraxon, is unknown. Perhaps it can do WHATEVER it wants with protodermis-based life forms? And then, with real organic lifeforms like those on Spherus Magna (yes, they are organic, not biomechanical, the movie gets that blatantly wrong), it is restricted to what is in their evolutionary make-up or in their future evolutionary line. That's my theory. Anyway, the reason Mata Nui gives Gresh the power of air as opposed to the element his tribe is culturally based around, which is "the Green"/Jungle/plant life, is that it's not actually him doing it. It's the mask itself. It has its own basic, vague sentience. Quasi-sentience. That's why he's also like "Of course, your element is fire!" when Ackar gains the power of fire. What I mean is that the mask recognizes the different colors, most likely, as being tied to specific elements. Yes, Jungle also exists in the MU, but it's less common, and there's also other green beings in it that just so happens to wield air as opposed to Jungle. Greg's said before that it's Mata Nui doing it and that he gave Gresh air powers specifically because *he* associated green with air, but that doesn't make sense. Otherwise, why does he sound like he didn't know Ackar had gotten fire?

About a year and a half ago, my partner and I marathoned all 4 movies back to back. It wasn't her first time watching them, but it was her first time really understanding them if that makes sense. We both found The Legend Reborn so hard to sit through, and I think you hit the nail on the head at the end of this video when talking about the tone. Bionicle took itself pretty seriously and while Miramax's films have some really goofy moments, they could be dark when they wanted to be. The Legend Reborn really couldn't.
The other thing we both agreed was severally lacking was the mystery. The atmosphere of the first three was so cool, you always got this idea that you never really knew enough about the world and that there was more to uncover. The Legend Reborn though? Everything just exists, it's so straightforwards and bland. I think the one scene that feels like Bionicle is the secret lab portion. That's actually cool and hints at that wonder and awe that made Bionicle stand out, but then it's immediately over and back to more straightforwards boring stuff.

The guy who voiced Metus was really good. It was good casting to get the guy who previously did fake car commercials or whatever, but he also did a surprisingly good sinister voice. He could have probably had a more versatile acting career.
Michael Dorn is perfect casting for Mata Nui IMO. He did well here and even better in the Mata Nui Saga (there’s a wonderful YT video somewhere that has it chronological, higher-res, and with the Tahu actor’s voiceover at the end).
Jim Cummings as Ackar was pretty much perfect.
I think other voice actors’ performances were “bad” because they were directed to play the voices in a goofy or stupid way. They executed that specific direction well, and probably would have done a good job if they were directed to play the roles less cartoonishly.

Problem is, though, that canonically, the denizens of the Matoran Universe _are_ supposed to have fleshy, organic bits, but I do also think that they're suppose to be more set-accurate than they are in the Miramax movies. Another problem is, though, that the beings on Bara Magna (and Spherus Magna) in contrast are _not_ biomechanical but _fully organic._ 100%. Most of them get implants later in life, though, making them 85% organic and 15% mechanical (while MUans are basically 85% mechanical and 15% organic - where the organics bits are muscles knidding together the mechanical parts, lungs and some other organs - but we don't know what other organs beside lungs). And in this movie they somehow look even more robotic than the Matoran at the beginning LMAO. Makes no sense. They're supposed to be humanoid beings with skin and blood and such. The toys are just an approximate, even for the Matoran, Toa etc., but I do think the the MUans are supposed to look more like the toys than the Agori and Glatorian are to their toys. Also, the muscles on the Agori and Glatorian in this movie look super flat... or is it wires??? And a lot of it makes no sense when you look where it's placed, what direction they run etc. Look at the arms and shoulders for intance... just flat bit of muscle running horizontally, and then there's a bunch of gaps? Where would the muscle go? What is it doing for the being there?? I also just noticed, too, that a lot of the textures do look pixelated and flat in TLR too, and the models are very jagged and low-poly in some places... Even on characters. Just jagged, low-poly stuff combined with high-poly smooth stuff. Looks awkward.

13:30 I mean, bone and claw were once parts of living beings and the Mask of Life probably has this effect because it can manipulate... well, life. Just like it transformed Dekar into the second Hydraxon, equipment and all, in the Mahri Nui arc.
Edit: Also, while I generally find the movie okay, the thing I hated the most was actually the shift in designs from the Miramax trilogy to this movie. Yeah sure, the characters looked more accurate to the toys, but ironically the designs make even less sense in this story arc than they would've in the previous films. The Toa, Matoran and Turaga are supposed to be kind of like cyborgs who are machine than organic, while the Makuta are practically robots controlled by a substance called Antidermis (their true form), so those designs might have made sense for them.
The Glatorian and Agori on the other hand, were supposed to be mainly organic. They are actually completely organic at first and only get cybernetic enhancements if they want to.
And, as much as I would've liked to see the fight between Teridax and Mata Nui in movie form, it still wouldn't be the end of the saga. The story was still added on to even after the toyline was discontinued and then it just "ended" on a cliffhanger with countless open plotthreads. The story would've focused on the Elemental Lords next and, in a twist that came out of nowhere, one of the great beings was right under our nose the entire time in the form of a random Matoran that was released as part of the Voya Nui arc.

So, I remember liking this movie when I was younger specifically because of the action and the more toy-accurate designs, but I never loved it as much as Mask of Light or Web of Shadows. My feelings about The Legend Reborn as an adult basically come down to 'it's a movie where not much happens'. It opens fairly strong with Mata Nui's banishment, the introduction of Click (who I also love) and then the fight between Ackar and Strakk to sort of set the tone, but after that... well... what really happens? Mata Nui wanders around the desert in circles, there are a few fights, and everyone learns the power of friendship.
I honestly feel that the story might have worked better if Mata Nui hadn't already started out as a nice guy and needed to learn to rely on others (after being an all-powerful god the last time he was awake). The opening of the movie kind of highlights how far Mata Nui has fallen. Dorn's narration, Mata Nui's stumbling around helplessly when he gets his new body, and the fact that he wins the Vorox fight more or less by accident... all of those are good starting points. But from there... yeah, nothing much happens. Mata Nui doesn't seem to demonstrate any real feelings about his new condition other than wanting to save his people. Which is fine, but imagine the more nuanced character arc that he could have gone through if:
-Mata Nui was still in denial about losing his godlike powers and tended to overestimate his own abilities.
-He didn't immediately hit it off perfectly with Kiina and Ackar (who, by the way, are unusually friendly characters to meet in this kind of 'survival of the fittest' setting) and had to learn to trust/work with others. The Power of Friendship is not an inherently bad trope, and we see plenty of it in Bionicle prior to this point.
-He knew or made any kind of reference to what had brought him to this point. Anger at Makuta for taking his power. Guilt over Matoro's sacrifice. Recognition (or confused lack of recognition) of the Mask of Life. The Legend Reborn pretty much just exists in a vacuum compared not only to the previous movies, but the entire eight or nine years of story which came before it. I understand that in-universe Mata Nui might not have had perfect knowledge of these things, but the movie might have been better if it had felt more like a genuine follow-up to the Matoran universe arcs.
I absolutely loved the Glatorian sets, and I think my feelings towards the movie when I was younger were influenced a lot by my excitement at seeing Bionicle characters have swordfights. As an adult, the story is just too bare-bones to really appreciate that much. I wonder if my opinion might have been different if, as was likely intended, The Legend Reborn had simply been a setup for larger reveals about the world of Bara Magna, the nature of the Great Beings, and so on. Oh well.
One thing will never change, though, 'Bye Bye Babylon' is a jam. :P

Honestly, after spending the entire lifespan of Bionicle for the ride (even into the Gen2 fiasco), I'd be lying if I said I still didn't enjoy it to this day. Every so often, I mess around with some of the sets and collections I kept over the years. And from the animated online webisodes to the four movies, I loved them all (the Legend of Metru Nui and the Mata Nui onlin interactive were my top favourites).
Now, having found your review of the movies, I can agree with saying I was nostalgia-blind to how good the movie is. It's not a bad movie as a whole, but I did miss the stock sounds, lack of exciting music and.... "neighing lizards" that I never questioned until this video.
I'm really happy I was able to find these review videos, as you do justice to describe and explain very good points for each of them!
And you sold me with the use of the Bionicle GameBoy Advanced theme at the end of the video. A touch of good life back in the day!
SIDE NOTE: I forgot that they had teeth under the teeth... It makes sense with them being Bio-mechanical, but yeah... the more I notice it, the weirder it gets.
But at least the voice acting and Click were the best parts.
AND DOES ANYONE NOTICE THE CLIPPING OF METUS' SHOULDER IN 17:22?! HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT UNTIL NOW?!

For me what kills this movie is not the story, or voice acting or the boring choreography of the characters but at the start, first Mata Nui is still green and brimming with life? The Bohrok did and I quote “Water ripples around the barren island of Mata Nui, stripped of all life and vegetation by Bohrok hoards” they really messed up with the island and there’s also the fact that when the robot after a thousand centuries finally stand up they animated it like he’s just woken up like it’s no big deal coming back from the dead. There’s no impact like the old short animation that might’ve been part of a commercial had, where he slowly moves and breaks the island as he stands up letting the viewers watch in awe as a 40m ft tall machine stands up.

The thing that akways bothered the hell out of me concerning this movie was how easily the Skrall are defeated in combat. It is established VERY well in the comics and books that the Skrall are a fanatically dedicated warrior culture that worships combat from a young age, like ancient Spartans, or Elites and Spartan II's from Halo. The Skrall are each nearly unstoppable as individuals, let alone as their own army and nation. The comics littersly open with an Arena fight where Gresh gets his ass absolutely beaten by a common Skrall, and then like a day later the Skrall army raids the Arena and completely massacre EVERYBODY like it's nothing. Theres like 12 survivors. It's shown explicity that they are as one cukture more violent and powerful than every other clan combined (And may be the reason the Vorox's entire culture collapsed and caused them to become devolved mad desert dwelling creatures)
Its made clear - each Skrall is fucking DEADLY and very few Glatorian or even Toa are on their level of combat. Yet the film makes grunting, animalistic, mass desposable storm troopers out of them, even to the point if having them comically incompetent - dont even get me started with how they depict Tuma. It should be a crime, what they did to the Skrall in this. Only the real ones remember who the real lords of Bara Magna are 🖤❤

    2. Legends of metru Neui. You have Lhikan sacrificing himself to save Vakama.
    3. Web of shadows . You have Vakama turning evil which is a nice twist and fits the edgy vibe.
Nothing really stands out in this movie.
Feels like it’s on rails and not trying to be daring for a kids movie.

I really don't like this movie all that much... Canonically, the denizens of the Matoran Universe are supposed to have fleshy, organic bits, but I do also think that they're suppose to be more set-accurate than they are in the Miramax movies. Another problem is, though, that the beings on Bara Magna (and Spherus Magna) in contrast are not biomechanical but fully organic. 100%.

I remember watching this movie a few times as a kid. Even back then I thought it wasn't good for a few reasons:
    1) As this took place in the 2009 Bionicle story arc, only half of the relevant characters that year showed up in the film, such as the ice Glatorian who was there for only one fight scene early in the movie.
    2) Forgettable plot that started off interesting, but felt like it went nowhere. (Except for when Mata-Nut turned Metus into a snake, that was the most memorable part.)
After seeing the review, I noticed that the animation feels really off. You have almost Pixar quality character designs, and the actual animation feels cheap, making them feel a bit lifeless. The animation could had worked a bit better if they had tried going for the first 3 movie's biomechanical art style instead of trying to make the characters look realistic & made of Lego.

Bone hunters are a subspecies of the rock agori, that developed some distinctive features. The set Atakus resembles a Skrall Agori and the figure Fero that came with the rock steed skirmix -the red dinosaur- resembles a bone hunter. However, we don't see Feros model at all in the movie. So, that fleshy crunchy sound effect for Strakk slamming into a rock could have worked, had the art direction gone a little looser with the toy accuracy.
(Interestingly enough, the animation studio also did Hero Factory, and used about the same facial design as this movie, and it worked a whole hell of a lot better, probably because Hero Factory is about fully mechanical robots. A nice happy medium would be the little bits and textures ticking away on the actual biomechanical characters, but the approach of the Miramax trilogy - making the most with what little they got. This was at the time when I was a bionicle fan, so this is actually the only one of the movies I've seen

tbh i didnt even know there were 3 prequels to this movie, the only reason on how i know bionicle is this particular movie here and of course the toys. As a kid watching this was great, i always thought their mechanical body/parts were realistic because well theyre lego toys, id think it would be weird if they made the body more fleshlike.

To be fair the other movies are not really prequels in the classic term. Yes, they play in the same continuity and Makuta appears in every movie, but the way the Bionicle story is structured there is a huge story gap between the trilogy and The Legend Reborn, that was produced and written by completely different people.
So watching them back to back is really confusing without further context from the books and comics.

Any movie with Cybernetic Johnny Test is at least gonna lose 1 star, Bionicles, or otherwise.

Thing is due to the agori/glatorian/skrall all being more organic than robotic I think the teeth makes sense, just not so much for mata nui given I believe he's fully a robot.. a supernatural one but a robot regardless

I always forget everything about the middle section of this movie in particular. Everything from Mata Nui's arrival to his introduction to the two main glatoran works and then it just drops off into forgettable territory until the confrontation with Metus. I think the inclusion of Barix was also a mistake as he took up screen time that could have been used to flesh out the glatoran more. Bionicle movies already have issues with getting each of the cast enough time without comic releifs hogging spotlight and it could've mad that middle bit more interesting.

Retrospectivelly the movie is nothing crazy good
But as a kid I loved the hell out of it and the nostalgia is still very strong
