Quick correction - I accidentally said in the video that the orange Ruru masks were exclusive to the Manas - totally blanked on the fact that they came in the mask packs as well, my bad! The yellow Komaus are still exclusive, though, adding to their rarity.
It's crazy to hear how short the shelf life was on most of these I recall clearly each and every one being at various stores throughout the years while growing up Bionicle was a huge part of my childhood, and I suppose this really puts those memories in perspective with how quickly time seems to fly now
I gave my Toa Mata Nui to my nephew, i believe he still has all the pieces but in storage. Just the other day i was playing with Lego with my niece and the Gold Mask of Life popped up in the pile, i have it displayed now with my new lego sets
I still have all my Glatorian sets in the box I left em, in tact, including Toa Mata Nui, and a second gold Mask of Life I got from Lego by requesting a replacement part I didn't need.

Interesting and funny story, even though I bursted out laughing while reading that Terni is the second most important city in central Italy. No offense, but how can you say that when Rome, Florence and Bologna exist? 😂 Anyway, I agree with you that we are blessed to live in a country that's almost free of store exclusives (which doesn't just apply to Lego, but in general)

Dang, I never realized that Toa Mata Nui shot up in price this much! I bought it used in impeccable condition with box and instructions for 120€ in 2014 I think, and at that time I already thought the price was insane, wow. Times have really changed! I currently have every set listed here, but I never bought extra parts to have the combiners displayed alongside the retail sets they are built from. Do you think it's worth the investment to part those combiners out on bricklink?
I say its worth it. Once I completed my collection, the first thing I did was start buying up additional sets for combiners. Most expensive was probably botar and kardas dragon, because brutaka is getting super expensive now, but next would probably be voporak and the shadowed one, only because roodaka is a favorite and keetongu/sidorak don't go for much usually. Prices will only go up so I'd say buy em now and if you feel like selling the extras later you could easily make your money back.
i remember a friend showed me his newest bionicle many years ago. little did i know it would be the top 2 rarest set of them all. really cool to see it here, and i hope he still has the set
I actually had the Bahrag (Bohrok Queens) set! Still have them disassembled in a bin somewhere lol. I absolutely loved playing with them, the neck snapping was easily one of the best play functions Bionicle has ever had in a set. Even though it wore the gears out lol
wow what a nostalgia trip this was i had a toa mata nui and the number 2 entry as a kid, which i might even have in storage somewhere wow had no idea they held up in value so much
I will never forget seeing Karzahni at our local hypermarket, I was pretty young and obsessed with Bionicle, went there with my mother and father to buy snacks because we were going hiking through the day, I saw it and it was a set I never saw before, even though I keep up with new sets constantly. It was the only one left so I begged my mother to buy it for me, she agreed but only on the way back from our trip, I did my best to hide it so hopefully no one else would take it. Sadly when we arrived back it was already closed, and the next time we went it was already gone. Sad story.
been watching a bunch of bionicle videos for nostalgia, was pretty shocked when #8 on this list turned out to be a kit I vividly remember owning (fancy mask and all). might have to go digging through my old boxes of bits and see if I can reassemble it.
I remember going to Legoland Germany when I was young, where only one Bohrok Queens set was available. We directly went to the store and asked to reserve it for us. By the end of the day, when we came back to the store after visiting the park, of course, it was sold to someone else. Never found this set again and my child heart was broken that day. Seeing them in this video feels so nostalgic. Great collection by the way!
i came here as i researched yesterday some bionicle lore and somehow stumbled up on your channel which is amazing, its crazy for me to see i had 8/10 of those sets only realizing now how much my parents spent for my gifts and collection back then. I remember getting the Vezon and Kardas set as a kid. Still my favorite set, I have Vezon displayed in my room, but all of Kardas’ pieces are in storage with the rest of my Bionicles. The Takutanuva set also came with a rainbow Mask of Light, dunno if that was in the regular version or not, but I had gotten that set and remembered that being pretty cool, even if the Makuta alt mask was kind of boring
I always wanted to build the Toa Mata Nui set in silver and grey, with some minor changes to represent the Great Spirit Robot, but I never had the silver version of the mask so I never bothered. Nice to know I have the two rarest sets though. I even have 4 Kardas dragons
I got number two for Christmas and I LOVE it still stands proud on my nightstand. Still got the original box and always wondered where my mother got it.
No one will ever convince me that toa mata nui isn’t an amazing set. By far the crown of my collection. I remember being in toys r us as a kid and my parents offering to buy me a set and I remember my dad pointing out saying didn’t that one look cool. But me and my brother being idiots said we’d rather get more of the smaller sets. So I think we got two of the Glatorian canisters each because then with 4 characters you can make a cool story which is what we did. As I grew up I started playing with them less but still liked collecting them, and at some point I decided I wanted toa mata nui. I remember being so hyped when I won a bid on eBay because I got it for around £50 which if I remember right it retailed for £40 new so it was a good deal, and as a kid I didn’t have tons of money to spend on it so this was already a big enough purchase. I’d also been trying to get it for so long and kept being sniped just as the bidding ended so finally winning it felt so good. Maybe it’s the nostalgia and memories of the story behind it, but even now I have to look at it on my shelf, as the symbol of all of what bionicle was, and my favourite set
I used to have the Cadoc and Gadoc set. Damn, I had no idea it was so valuable! Time to dig through my old Bionicle collection and see if I still have them boxed up somewhere.
Wow thanks for all the info. I got #4 and #1 in a large Bionicle/hero factory bulk purchase last summer for next to nothing. #4 is my favorite set by far. Love the spider/tank pose ability. Would’ve never guessed #1 was worth sooo much.
I bought my used Toa Mata Nui for 170 dollars in early 2020. I own every set listed here and found them for fairly good prices, specially my sealed Karzahni. I never found the Yellow Jetrax for a good price, so instead I was looking for the yellow shields in bricklink until they showed up for 13 dollars each one on a UK store. Now there are more yellow shields in bricklink for 15 dollars each one, so if you want the yellow Jetrax the best way to do it is to recolor the blue one, the yellow liftarms needed need are very common.
As a kid, I received Scopio XV1 as a birthday gift the year it came out. Years later as a teen, my mom sold a majority of my Bionicle collection, which I will never forgive her for. About 4 years back I decided to by a used set for myself despite the price. It's taken a beating, mostly due to age, but I'm glad to have it back. It's been the first step to rebuilding the collection I had years ago
Wow. Toa Mata Nui now goes Used at $400!?!? I picked up one in 2016 from eBay for about $175 and thought it was a lot, and with box! Later had to sell it around $140 but did get him again without box and again from eBay for $138.61 with shipping in 2019. Safe to say he'll stay for now with me.
I was collecting as a kid up till 2009 with my final being Icarax Madura who I still have. I had K man till my mom donated him and several other complete builds to my town’s school behind my back. Was only ever able to recover a leg and arm of him which saddens me more knowing he was rare even by the time of the series’ end.......the woes of older times.
I went after kardas dragon by buying the 3 titans used to make it separately. It was the only model I wanted as a kid and it felt so nostalgic building it as an adult
Fascinating. I never watch anything related to Bionicles, but RUclips recommended this to me and I actually habe #2 back at my parents home! Clicked because I saw it in the thumbnail and didn't know how lucky I was to get one as a present back then.
I remember my dad getting me the Titan Mata Nui set for my 10th birthday and holding onto it for years until my mother got rid of most of my bionicles during a yard sale :/ it's disheartening to think that figure so important to the fandom could just be tossed away like that, but I do really hope that wherever it is right now that it's in good hands
When I was selling off my Bionicles, I had a feeling I should keep my cahdok and gahdok. While I don’t think they will sell very quickly (almost priceless now), it’s good to know how much they shot up in value
Pretty happy to have Karzahni in my collection, I have the seperate versions of the Voporak, Vezon and Kardas sets as well so I at least have all of the pieces.
Someone is currently working on an entire Bigger Bomunga that actually does use the toa terrain crawler mask, and it's honestly insane, I've seen them post some updates on a discord server I'm in
This sent me back, I was around 10 or 9 when I got introduced into the bionicle sets with the later versions and then they stopped making them. I found books and pictures of the OG sets and I practically drooled over how cool they were, except I couldn’t get my hands on them because… well I was a kid and also Lego stopped manufacturing the sets. Lego’s hero factory was nice to have around especially for the kids that got into Bionical just as they concluded the series, but man do I think I was born in the wrong time! R.I.P. LEGO Bionical!
I remember getting a big mata nui from a toys r us once. I still have it. A lot of my figures started suffering from weak plastic and have started cracking. Though I know I have the container oneas I liked the yellow color.
I had no idea some of these have gone up so high! I have number 1,4 and 6 (you can tell when I grew up) and toa Mata nui is one of my so time favourite sets!
This video caught my eye in my feed since I recognized both Bionicles in the thumbnail, turns out I owned both of those plus 2 others in this video when I was a kid 😵💫 No idea where they ended up but this was a great nostalgia trip!
personally i think it would be better to keep those sealed and buy a duplicate cahdok + gahdok, a sealed bionicle set (especially the queens) are worth a load of money
I had half of these but my nieces got into them and destroyed them. And i think my grandma got rid of my bionicle bin.....Thousands of dollars in parts....Given away....If you have cool stuff PROTECT IT FROM OLD PEOPLE!!!
In 2010 I was on holiday in Italy and I was incredibly lucky to stumble upon a Toa Mata Nui set at a random large grocery store. Because it was such a coincidence my parents bought it for me. Never expected it to be so rare afterwards so glad that I got it that way. A year later I was at a Toys R Us in Florida where I found the Skopio XV-1 at a significant discount, so also happy to have that one.
Story time. TL;DR - I received Toa Mata Nui in the mail as a mistake. I was 13, just spent like $600 of my hard earned monies to buy a bunch of those lego castle and goblins sets. Must’ve waited almost a month before Mata Nui himself shows up on my doorstep. I had just come home from school, dad says “package for you on the table” so I tear my backpack off, rush up the stairs only to be confronted with none of the castle sets I ordered. I was bummed out but my mum called lego, asked about the sets and turns out they shipped the orders to the wrong addresses. Me being a kid, asked to talk to the lego representative on the phone. Mum hands me the phone and I ask innocently if I can keep the Toa because I thought he was cool. Guy asks if I like Bionicle. Course I say yes. He asks what my favourite Bionicle is. I tell him how it’s pohatu, but my OG pohatu was stolen by my bully in grade 1 and I was never able to get it back. I then said “I’ll trade this Mata Nui for a Pohatu!” Guy says they don’t have any left, and besides this Bionicle is WAY more powerful than Pohatu, he created- “I know who Mata Nui is and I don’t want him. I just want my Pohatu back.” I can hear the guy smiling as he says something along the lines of “wait and see, you’ll come to like that Mata Nui way more than you’ve ever loved your Pohatu.” He was wrong, I still want my old Pohatu back. That being said after watching this video Mata Nui is going on display front and centre! Heh I’ve got to be like one of maybe 3 people on earth to EVER receive this set entirely by mistake. Needless to say he is not for sale, too precious to me tbh :)
It shouldn't surprise me that these sets are so expensive now, but it somehow did. I love the Bionicle story more, the more I learn of it (watched all of Retold! -great stuff) but I wouldn't spend so much on something that would just sit on my shelf. I do plan to eventually get a few old favorite characters, though.
I miss Bionicle. Would play with them from when I can remember to about 11, when we decided to sell all of them custom. Sometimes I wish i hadnt sold them, but now I try find some for my brother and theyre so difficult to get now
i had no idea how rare some of the bionicles i gave away were, year ago i bought a bulk of used parts, among them was the pearl gold mask, i dont have any bionicles anymore but man i had no idea it was worth so much, still pretty cool for who ever has it now
Technically... Mata nui did grew to that size in a way. Toa Mata nui's body kinda reasembles the great spirit robot if you remove the mask. Chunky lower legs, waist with pistons, and rhe robot's is pretty similar to a regular bionicle skull piece.
I have 2 sets of Vezon and Kardas with the boxes and manuals, because both of my parents accidentally bought me the same gift for Christmas =D 1 set of Voporak and 1 set of Takutanuva but I don't think I have the box for it. Just the manual. Vezon and Kardas set was and is still my favorite out of all the sets in this video for sure. Loved playing with the dragon and rebuilding it ^^
I had those blue and red dragon when I was a kid!! I remember spending 2 days trying to put them together and even had a few outbursts not being able to figure it out. The recommended age to put them together was older than I was. After a few crying sessions I did manage to complete them. Good times! I can't believe they are regarded as rare.
I think it’s really cool to see something that was most impactful on my childhood be collected as it is. Cool story, I have a cousin who is autistic, and since we were children have been playing with bionicle. He owns every set, has bought a bunch of them multiple times. None of them are box new, he has always taken them out, builds them, then decides to make his own OC. So technically, he owns all of these, but none of them are OG in the box. All of them are mixed and matched to make some of the best looking oc bionicles I have ever seen. We used to make up stories within the timeline with his awesome OCs, he was never the main character just the narrator, it was me and my brother who were always the ones in the limelight. My brother being taka nuva, and my personal one being an oc he made, but the name evades me. Always fighting the baraka, visorak etc. and making stories finding the best way to implement the original characters he has made in them. If I can ever get pictures of his bionicles, I’ll link them below, but I don’t think he’s ever really posted what he’s made, or even talked about it much outside the family, even though is always lined with the ones he’s made and most proud of.
1:27 I just had a child hood memory coke flooding back to me because I remember messing around with some random parts when I was little and I didn’t know what it was for and now after looking at that character I think my dad used to collect them.
man i wish i got these, these remind me of lego chima type of creativity with the technic functions that make it look like its moving or changing forms
Toa Mata Nui is the only one I didn't collect back in the day. It came out right after I fell off of Bionicle. Looking back, I really wish I picked it up.
Cool, I actually own 2 of those, that being the Barak twins and Takuta Nuva, though a lot of them weren't even available in Germany. Still cool to see a part of my childhood once again ^^
I do wonder about the special edition Takanuva, the Metru Makuta - both of which came with an exclusive piece. The worst part was that the second set was missing pieces when I built it… And the brickmaster sets, like the Click set
I remember begging my parents for the Kardas Dragon set, and I managed to convince them to get it for me that day. Never knew till now just how small a window I had to get one. Dang man
Last week I got a yellow jetrax at an antique/thrift store for $20. It was labeled as a “vintage transformer”. It’s missing a handful of pieces but I think I got it for a good value
I have karzahni except he’s in pieces and I lost his cape when I was a kid. I also have the skopio which I got off eBay luckily for $90 a couple years ago.
I've been sitting on a 400 dollar set!? All these years that Mata Nui set has been displayed on my desk and I had no idea it was one of the rarest sets out there.....
Was going through my bin of Bionicle parts and found an instruction manual for Number three, I still have the parts as well. I gotta start rebuilding them asap!
I have several of the combined sets. Takutanuva, Roporak, Vezon and Kardas, and also Ultimate Dume, though that wasn't mentioned. I also have Cahdok and Gahdok, and I briefly had the Terrain Crawler (I received it for my birthday, but I wanted the action figures, so we returned it). I remember most of the combined models being Target or Toys R Us exclusives, and I definitely remember the Vezon and Kardas set not including directions for the separate models it was made up of.
Great video! I had no idea the karzahni set was so rare! I had that set and I have my gold Kanohi Ignika on my favourite moc on the desk right beside me! :D
I found a 2 pack containing Sidorak and Toa Iruini recently. Kind of an odd bundle and it was definitely rare since there are only a few listings for it anywhere online.
I had that Makuta combo with the unique mask, but got rid of it a few years ago, along with the rest of my bionicles bc I thought I grew out of it. Some lucky guy now has a bunch of bionicles worth hundreds
I receaved vezon and kardaz back in 2006 from a family member that went to new york (i'm from south america) it was one or maybe the coolest bionicle set i had ever opened, to set up and play with. The box itself was something else
I bought a Toa Mata Nui just this last month to reclaim one of my childhood favorites, after my mom literally just threw him in the garbage while moving.
I actually have Vezon and Fenrakk at my dad's and I also have a combiner model with Axonn and Brutaka which is cool because back then I don't remember seeing a combiner instruction to build it, so I had to look up the instructions online in like 2006 I was about 10 years old. but I didn't know they all combined to create something that's cool
We had a store in germany, where almost all old bionacle sets where in "stock" as well as most other old lego sets. They where all sold at bellow uvp price even though they where brand new. I bought a coupple of them but not all sadly
Quick correction - I accidentally said in the video that the orange Ruru masks were exclusive to the Manas - totally blanked on the fact that they came in the mask packs as well, my bad! The yellow Komaus are still exclusive, though, adding to their rarity.

What about the Sand Tarakava prototype set?
What about Umbra(roller skater dude)? That's was a limited edition set that came out maybe in 2004-2005.
Is that worth any value?

Socket ball resin masks are rare too , an orange lewa etc from way back in day

I remember being so hyped when I won a bid on eBay because I got it for around £50 which if I remember right it retailed for £40 new so it was a good deal, and as a kid I didn’t have tons of money to spend on it so this was already a big enough purchase. I’d also been trying to get it for so long and kept being sniped just as the bidding ended so finally winning it felt so good. Maybe it’s the nostalgia and memories of the story behind it, but even now I have to look at it on my shelf, as the symbol of all of what bionicle was, and my favourite set
My parents at 26: we just closed on the house and our son is on the way
Me at 26:
It’s crazy how much they’ve appreciated!!
Whoa, I've still got the #1 Mata Nui set in storage. Played with it a ton as a kid, it was the biggest set I'd ever seen at a time
It's kind of funny to me that a set as terrible as Toa Mata Nui is in such high demand.
I remember my dad getting me the Titan Mata Nui set for my 10th birthday and holding onto it for years until my mother got rid of most of my bionicles during a yard sale :/
it's disheartening to think that figure so important to the fandom could just be tossed away like that, but I do really hope that wherever it is right now that it's in good hands
I just realized, anyone who wants to create a giant Bomonga can use the front of the Terrain Crawler!!!
@@137shadowX Fair enough! XD
Great video may not be as exciting but could you do a top ten most common bionicle sets?
I feel like I'm watching a higher being with a bonkle collection like that behind him.
So cool to see Cahdok and Gahdok on this video. Got them for Christmas in 2002 and still works.
I have Cahdok and Gahdok still sealed, actually! One day I’ll get around to building them lol
personally i think it would be better to keep those sealed and buy a duplicate cahdok + gahdok, a sealed bionicle set (especially the queens) are worth a load of money
That’s awesome! Definitely some of the coolest sets to own
I freaking love Bionicle
I just want my Pohatu back.”
I can hear the guy smiling as he says something along the lines of “wait and see, you’ll come to like that Mata Nui way more than you’ve ever loved your Pohatu.”
He was wrong, I still want my old Pohatu back.
I remember seeing all of these at the store as a kid. Brings back memories.
I miss Bionicle. Would play with them from when I can remember to about 11, when we decided to sell all of them custom. Sometimes I wish i hadnt sold them, but now I try find some for my brother and theyre so difficult to get now
i had no idea how rare some of the bionicles i gave away were, year ago i bought a bulk of used parts, among them was the pearl gold mask, i dont have any bionicles anymore but man i had no idea it was worth so much, still pretty cool for who ever has it now
Stumbling on Bionicle videos and now I need to rifle through my old stuff in the hope I never threw some of these out
Technically... Mata nui did grew to that size in a way. Toa Mata nui's body kinda reasembles the great spirit robot if you remove the mask.
Chunky lower legs, waist with pistons, and rhe robot's is pretty similar to a regular bionicle skull piece.
I still have my Kardas combiner model, it was such a fun build. I didn't know it ever came out as a standalone until recently
great stuff as always, i’d love to see a top ten of your personal favorite sets!
I had no idea the skopio was worth so much! I got it as a kid and luckily still have it! Thanks for the great vid!
As another autistic person this makes me very happy to hear!
I might get the Scopio XV1 soon, I might even be able to get the actual Toa Mata Nui set one day as well
Awesome!! Good luck!
The worst part was that the second set was missing pieces when I built it…
And the brickmaster sets, like the Click set
I remember begging my parents for the Kardas Dragon set, and I managed to convince them to get it for me that day. Never knew till now just how small a window I had to get one. Dang man
Last week I got a yellow jetrax at an antique/thrift store for $20. It was labeled as a “vintage transformer”. It’s missing a handful of pieces but I think I got it for a good value
I have karzahni except he’s in pieces and I lost his cape when I was a kid. I also have the skopio which I got off eBay luckily for $90 a couple years ago.
I didn't know I needed this RUclips recommendation
I've been sitting on a 400 dollar set!? All these years that Mata Nui set has been displayed on my desk and I had no idea it was one of the rarest sets out there.....
I only own 2 of those models but the list alone just a walk down memory lane for me. Tysm!
I'm incredibly happy to own the vezon & kardas dragon complete set, though I bought the seperate sets instead of the complete sets.
Was going through my bin of Bionicle parts and found an instruction manual for Number three, I still have the parts as well. I gotta start rebuilding them asap!
Aaaand this is how I find out I own the rarest bionicle set and probably still have the box somewhere with instructions. Amazing.
Wow, the Toa Mata Nui I have, it's split across some different custom models now, but it's cool to see how rare it is now.
Bionicle was oddly affordable lowkey
I found a 2 pack containing Sidorak and Toa Iruini recently. Kind of an odd bundle and it was definitely rare since there are only a few listings for it anywhere online.
I had like 4 of these in the list as a kid, the rarest one being the big green guy with the two smaller guys
The box itself was something else
it is very good for you to have all of Bionicle sets, and all the parts as well.
I remember when I was a kid I saved my birthday money for months waiting for Toa Mata Nui to show up in stores but he never did, was devastated
Did anyone the Axxon model? And were they also fascinated by the fact he had opposable fingers? Because I was. Also had the original Makuta model.
The Toa Terrain Crawler has been the Moby Dick to my Ahab since I was 10, glad I was able to get one complete back in 2017
We had a store in germany, where almost all old bionacle sets where in "stock" as well as most other old lego sets. They where all sold at bellow uvp price even though they where brand new. I bought a coupple of them but not all sadly
Nice video, but did you know there is a place #0? 6936 Piraka & Catapult; and probably the Kabaya sets as a honorable mention
Amazing video Chris! I can't wait to see more Bionicle Top 10 videos from you!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed. A ton more are on the way!
The reason these are so rare is that time-travelers have gone back and bought them when they were released.
