My favourite aspect of self-MOCs is how they can evolve with the builder to reflect their own changes and development over time. I've been updating mine since 2011 and it probably doesn't have a single piece in common with the original.
@@jonhy8351 That's... nice It doesn't make you any less of a MOCer than other people who make 'normal' MOCs. Don't forget the hips tho, they're arguably more important.
It’s honestly a shame self-mocs fell out of style. Back in the day mocists were constantly updating their self mocs so they could stay the center pieces of their collections. Looking through someone’s self moc would usually show you all of the major building milestones they hit over the years and that was something pretty special.
If you had continued this, I think you could've been a very respected member of today's mocing community The whole "weird head" thing could've given you a stylistic edge that maybe could've made you stand out
I still have all of my Bionicle OCs in a drawer in my desk to this day, aside from my favourite, Armoury, who is legitimately on my desk right in front of me as I type this, and I hope to never get rid of them.
It's... really nice to see another bionicle kids creations. I was the only kid in my neighborhood who liked them, so it brings back a massive wave of nostalgia to see your creations. I *do* enjoy these bionicles.
I did like these bionicles. Thank you for sharing! (Also, I loved the use of the Metroid Music for [Redacted], think that one's my favorite of the bunch in a weird way XD)
Seeing lime green pieces on Arch-Angel and Troglodyte physically hurt. Not that you shouldn't use them, but its a big risk using them, especially during the Mahri and Barraki eras.
Man, memories. I used to have a Bionicle character (or Toa-Sona if we're calling it that) as a kid myself. i don't think i ever named him, but I remember he had a mostly red body with a scorpion looking head (with mendable mandibles), a claw hand, and a fire sword (aka, just a fire piece I attached to his other hand). I guess I'll go with the first thing that comes to mind, and call him "Toa-Scire". I probably would've given him a name if I didn't get so infatuated with Beyblade just a while after, which is still a pass time of mine. I just wish the Metal series was still in stores/available offline, but that's another story.
The "official" term in the community is 'Self-MOC' - They used to be a huge deal to people but have become more of a novelty, rather than a cornerstone of ones online identity, as the fans have matured (all the kids who played with Bionicle when it first came out are in their mid-twenties now) They were usually Toa (because of course they were *eye roll*) but some were just random, vaguely humanoid, characters, it was a lot of fun creating them, seeing how your favourite MOCists wanted to portray themselves, in Bionicle form, and how that portrayal evolved, as they aged, got more pieces, learnt more sophisticated and experimental building techniques, etc.etc. Revamping your Self-MOC or replacing it with an entirely new one, was quite common :)
I honestly never made my own Bionicle creations as a kid. I just followed the directions. Yes, Lego Movie, adults aren't the only ones who like following directions, and yet I still had plenty of fun.
I only ever made 1 custom Bionicle as a kid and it was essentially just a chest piece with 4 Technic beams attached to the back for arms and legs and a tiny head that rocked back and forth. It looked really goofy and I wish I had a picture of it because it was really funny to look at.
2:42 you are not telling me that thing was able to stand up with triple-jointed legs in 2005, there's N O W A Y i swear those would've been loose by then
I used to always try and find a way to make serpent-like or snake-like Bionicle monsters. I was really obsessed with stringy things when I was little, to the point where half of the fun of presents was the string it was tied in. It is always fun to look at really old stuff one used to do. I remember back in the day, I used to do alot of comedy-stuff with my friends. We did a dumb "radio-show", we made dumb parody movies, we did some dumb let's plays and it was all just complete idiocy and us just bumbling around. There isn't much in the way of pride I can have in any of that, but hey. It's the kind of ridiculous shit that you can look back at and laugh at yourself over and I'm glad that we did any of it in the first place. It's unfortunate that the camera we owned to record the movies in particular recorded in this really weird tape-format, so it's not exactly possible to render them anymore, but that's why I do my best to try and keep the memory alive.
ok as a Bionicle Fan and Mocist I do really like How G1 these Mocs are. and in a world where people are using G2 Parts and CCBS a lot more, it's fun to see what it was like back then when G1 was still a thing. (also it's a Self-Moc. not a Toa-Sona)
I never got into Bionicles as a kid, so I didn't expect to pay much attention in this video, but a lot of these creations actually looked pretty cool, and I like how you didn't belittle your younger self when you found something you didn't think worked very well. Now I'm thinking back on the creative endeavors I made as a kid and learning to cringe less and forgive myself more. I'm glad I'm supporting this channel.
I liked these bionicles, thank you for showing them to us. It's always super charming to see people look back on their old art and provide wholesome commentary like this tbh. This reminds me that some of my oldest art that I could find was Mask of Light fan art, I had no ability to draw the robot parts so I just... didn't. I ended up with some vaguely Bionicle-looking characters that also looked kinda cute lmao
I know I'm commenting on a months old video but this was really nice and wholesome. It actually makes me want to build again. Think I'll spend the rest of the day building :)
A reminder that Lego is just as much about creating something new as it is taking a kit that's meant to look like something in particular. Thankyou again for sharing the whimsical creations from your childhood headspace, Scrafhulu!
Sometimes I love the RUclips algorithm for recommending people like you haha. I remember my own bionicle creations, takes me on a trip down memory lane haha. Great video, dude, you've earned yourself a new subscriber!
Another great video! I don't know anything about Bionicle, but this video was genuinely charming and enjoyable. I'm so glad you're making videos again and I can't wait to see the next one. Keep up the good work, Scarfulhu!
I'll admit I'm probably a little too old for the Bionicle range of Lego (as fascinating as I do find it), but I agree with the sentiment at the end; I'll be the first person to poke fun at the dumb stuff I made when I was a kid and teenager before anyone else (I mean, I was 16/17 in 2006 and there's stuff both on my harddrive and online from back then that I now go "what was I thinking") but at the same time, I do hold some odd nostalgia for those silly things and they made me who I am now. And like you said, I wouldn't change that for anything.
I know absolutely nothing about Bionicles, but I adore all of these cute little fellows! I'd definitely enjoy making some of my own bionicle-creature-things, if I ever get the chance to.
I’m a fan of Bionicle who didn’t grow up with Bionicle toys. All I did was watch the movies because we never bought any of the toys. It just shows that Lego can really write a fantastic story when they want to.
"Ah, good old Thor, whose arms are like... that. And his waist... is an arm. And his feet... are illegal." This might be my favorite quote in Scarfulhu history (closely followed "Oh, look at that! It's Vakama Hordika... except baaaaad!")
Fun video here. Bionicles were me and my brother's childhoods. We didn't have much but they were still fun. Also, I know you were pretty much back in the last video but I want say, welcome back dude. Also, this don't have to do with anything but Reunited from Undertale as the end card theme... Nice... Always gets me.
Man, Brickshelf takes me back. I remember looking up Lego MOCs back in the day and also the odd Bionicle. I loved making Bionicle MOCs, I think my favourite and most proud one was a silver Rahkshi (spine piece from the Takanuva bike set, head from Roodaha's breastplate and silver Toa Metru feet). There was just something so cool about an all metal Rahkshi to me like it was the prime or an artificial creature. Really cool to see all your MOCs, you did some great, intricate designs on the torsos. Very cute video ^W^ Great to see more Bionicle nostalgia with people
I'd say the biggest problem with the Nuva masks is that they're a bit... melty looking. They don't have the sharper edges that their fore-runners and later relatives would, but with the whole mechanical theme of the rest it doesn't mesh well. I once made a massive build myself that was probably as tall as the Makuta figure if not taller, using pieces from a massive selection of bionicle I had saved up for 5 years or so, and it had 3 heads, one was the Krika head, another was the Kikanalo head and the last was some silver fish guys head, a thruster pack using two of Tahu’s swords, six wings from many of the Makuta spices, long legs that had to be reinforced to just stand up with a piece that could take those long pieces that you put in between Rahkshi hands and something that they could slide in to stabilize it completely, it had two of those long pieces with Rahkshi weapons on the back and front and I think some kind of cannon in the left hand. Unfortunately I don’t have it anymore since my mom forced me to give away all my bionicle stuff even though it was all tucked away in a single chest and I have no idea where it is or if it’s even intact anymore.
Nice :D you build some awesome Bionicles. I like your alternate build torsos. I build a large Bionicle a few days ago, using some "illegal" combinations by myself ^^

Dang, this has kinda inspired me to make a video like this with my own creations. granted, yours are more creative than mine (most had Inika torsos) but I would still like to dig them all up. Good video, Scarfulhu! Also, I had Nocturn, and I remember using his parts for other MOCs but like most of my Mahri sets, pieces broke, especially hands. It's a shame too, Mahri was my favourite wave.
Hey, I remeber you from the reviews of the first two films! I don't know if you already responded to a similar question but what about the other movies? Why not make a review about web of shadows, at least to complete the trilogy? Charming video by the way, I love seeing old mocs from fans, it's so nostalgic
Okay ngl this is surprisingly very cute and wholesome.
Ikr
I think that "Horny Gun Guy" wins in the name department.
I mean, every Bionicle with the sir name of guy is immediately amazing
"Bionicles I Made As A Kid"
You should still be making them my dude.

It made me look up the only bionicle figure I had as a kid... apparently a "pahrak"
Bless you man.

That's exactly why I subscribed to your channel mate! I love it!
I remember somehow ending up with a lot of Bionicles Toa masks... but never once actually materials to build bodies. Huh.

I'd say the biggest problem with the Nuva masks is that they're a bit... melty looking. Spent much more time tinkering with Megabloks dragons to give them bizarre bodies with mismatched colour schemes - and missing jaws to look spookier!
the wonders i would have done with at least more colors for my mocs when i was young...
I use the illegal build at 7:47 good for large mocs, tentacles, tails or arms and legs for lanky mocs
