    1. Takua's _job_ was being a Chronicler. Chroniclers traveled across the island in search of stories and secrets. So, Takua was basically Indiana Jones.
    2. In the early days of Bionicle, some characters had some romantic moments, such as the Hewkii and Macku as well as Jaller and Hahli. This was later ret-conned by the writer of the Bionicle storyline.
    3. The _island_ Mata Nui was named AFTER the great spirit, which was explicitly stated in the opening. "We named our island home Mata Nui, after the Great Spirit himself".
    4. Makuta's plan may seem obvious, unless you go deeper into the lore, where you find out he has plans within plans, and that his mind is a maze.
    5. A Rahkshi is a robot suit of armor controlled by a slug-like creature called a Kraata, which Makuta creates from his own energy. Each Kraata has one of Makuta's many powers, which they can either use themselves or, when controlling a Rahkshi of the same power, channel it through a staff.
    6. Lewa, like everyone in Le-Koro, speaks a dialect called Treespeak. It's native to the jungles of Mata Nui and isn't spoken anywhere else, though some visitors tend to pick it up because they like it, like the Matoran known as Defilak.
    7. It was't the poison that made Tahu evil, he was hit by an attack of Kuurahk, the white Rahkshi of Anger. The poison, however, was actually slowly killing him. And the whole curing thing was to patch up the friction between Tahu and Gali that we saw during the Kohlii match.
    8. Makuta Teridax (his real name, the Makuta are a species) is a manipulator and evil, but he can also be civilized. He's strong, but he's not focused purely on using brute strength. He tends to toy around a bit. Even in later stories, he doesn't directly attack, he uses his power to send other Makuta to do his work for him.
    9. The "other villain", Lehrak Kal, was NEVER involved with Makuta, in fact, it wasn't even a VILLAIN. The Bohrok were creatures that were destined to destroy the island, which is actually covering the city of Metru Nui, which is inside the Mata Nui robot, a giant machine where all beings in the Matoran Universe live in. Makuta was never directly involved with them and, actually, it was TAKUA who awoke the Bohrok far too soon. The Bohrok were a 'chaotic neutral' force. If anything, the Ash Bear in the movie is closer to being Makuta, as the Ash Bear set was LITERALLY an alternate form for Makuta.
In short, this movie is hard to understand unless you're aware of the story from before, such as the comics the Mata Nui Online Game, the Bohrok animations and the Mata Nui Online Game II.

The reason for Tahu turning on the other Toa is actually not because of the poisoning by the green Rahkshi (Lerahk), but because of the white Rahkshi (Kuurahk) having the power to sow discord. He's the one who hits Tahu with this ray when Tahu rushes in to save Takua in Onu-Koro. 😉

I have to admit I have a love/hate relationship with the Bionicle movies, they are still nostalgic and if you don't think too hard about it then it's a good solo story, but as someone who read the books and the comics then some key things stand out to me, particularly in Makuta. In the Comics and Novel the Makuta who's first name is later revealed to be Teridax is a narcissist sociopath with no emotional attachment to anyone but himself, genius super strategist, and a massive powerhouse. Every time he appeared in the comic/novel then you knew all hell was going to break loose, he was going to say something epic and then heroes would either have to give their all for a temporary victory or sacrafice something important to get away with their lives, and throughout the entire story Teridax basically planned out everything so that when the Toa thought they had finally won and revived Mata Nui, it turned out in an amazing plot twist that Teridax had used them, his mind was now in the body of Mata Nui. Makuta Teridax became GOD!
In the movie they made the Makuta based on an earlier preconception of the character where he was a tragic hero who thought he was doing the right thing for Mata Nui but he was under the influence of the Mask of Shadows. They were going to use this story line to end Bionicle after the Mask of Light but because Bionicle sold incredibly well, they decided the story must go on.

Takua doesn't recognize the language on the mask because it's only written in the same ALPHABET. That doesn't mean the language is the same. Spanish is written using phonetic characters, but that doesn't mean it's the same language as English.

The words on the back are:
      'TECHNIC
      ORGANIC
      AIIS
      ONE DESTINY'
Which I mean... it's still their language. I can accept 'AIIS' as another language maybe but the others are unmistakably the same language.
Not like it matters. It's probably just a mistake from the movie makers rather than a mistake in the lore itself.

    • @notheotheralex6213
      @notheotheralex6213 6 лет назад +5

Actually, if you look closely, you can see a small blurry dot in the upper right of the "I"s, meaning that the third word is actually "APPS", not "AIIS".

Takua actually got his nickname The Chronicler from the Bionicle browser flash game. It also introduces his pet crab thing and I believe it does toy around with the flirting thing. I actually believe Takua is first introduced in the flash game. He's the main protagonist and player character. Technically a major Matoran hero.

Takua was actually introduced in the game Bionicle Quest for the Toa which you could customize but the credits show he had yellow arm and red legs. He shows that the Chronicler was just his position and was kicked out of Ta-Koro for wondering off. He then goes on the quest of saving the turaga's and collecting the toa stones and summons them. Its end with him being lauched at the beach seeing Tahu pod, effectively starting the Online game. which seemed to add that Takua lost his memories and doesn't remember everything that happen in the previous game.

What I really liked about the original Bionicle series is the strong level of continuity it had in its lore. For example, Matoran during this time period (meaning Jaller and Hahli during the Toa Nuva phase) themselves became Toa years later during the Toa Inika phase - both as a literal and metaphorical "passing of the torch".
This is also the biggest reason the most recent reboot was cancelled. The rebooted sets were significantly better in every way compared to the old ones, but what upset people the most is that the story was weak and had nothing to do with the old Bionicle series that everybody grew up to know and love. And while things like that may work for movies and comic books, Bionicle was just too small and simple to do that with and still be successful

  • @supersteguy4781

FYI: The "Chronicler" is a job given to one matoran who basically just writes down anything important that happens.
That's why when Takua becomes Takanuvu and therefore has more important things to do. Hali becomes the Chronicler in his stead.

Fun fact, a lot of voice actors in this movie would go on to be in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Notably, the guy who played Jaller is Prince Shining Armor in MLP, and the actress who played Toa Nokama in the second and third movies is also Rarity. But the most *perfect* casting, in my opinion, was Roodaka's voice actress playing the insectoid Queen Chrysalis.

The flirting comment with Jaller and Hahli is actually pretty funny considering that the movies ignored the "no love" rule, I'm not sure when they implemented it but they actually made it canon that inhabitants of the Matoran Universe can't fall in love (all because boys hate cooties or some shit :v). And yet, early media like this and the Mata Nui Online Game are known for their romantic interactions.

      @rubiconcinematics2910 8 лет назад +4

It's a neat idea but I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that the creators were just being dumb
You can translate all the Matoran writing, it's just an alphabet or font so the inscription on the back of the mask (Avokhii) is definitely the same language as the Onu-Koro Highway sign (fun fact: that's the same tunnel that is finished during MNOG, it connects Ta, Le and Onu-Koro, as well as the light stone mines) because it's just an English equivalent so if we can read it, Takua should too

That's assuming the message on the back of the Avohkii was written in the common Matoran dialect. The letters would be recognizable, but if the words were from a forgotten dialect, then Takua wouldn't have been able to read it.
Think of it like the differences between American, Canadian and British English; they may share the same alphabet but large portions of how that alphabet is used to form certain words and phrases are completely alien between the dialects.

    • @cah137-y4s
      @cah137-y4s 7 лет назад +3

Except that as we see from subsequent arcs, there literally is no difference between the Metru Nui Matoran language (which was written on the back of the Avohkii) and the Mata Nui Matoran language, with the exception of some added or dropped words. So while I see where you're coming from, I have to give it to Scarfulhu on this one.
(As a side note, I love how the words on the back of the mask basically spoil the biggest twist in the series several years in advance.)

Liked your video! Personally, I loved seeing Tahu give in to his darker instincts myself because the Rahkshi venom took his feelings of annoyance with his team members, stubbornness about doing things his own way, and deep sorrow over not being able to save his home then exacerbated it. Makes me wonder if he would have done the very same things he was pushed even further by more tragedy or feelings of inadequacy. The scene where he thanks Gali for saving his life is my favorite because it cements who Tahu is and ties into the themes of Unity and Duty he owes to his fellow Toa and to himself by swallowing his pride and showing vulnerability.
Besides, it gave me the hilarious line of "Fire has no brothers. FIre burns ALL!!!!" so I can't complain. Also, Pohatu and Kopaka are the best and your theory regarding Pewku is absolutely brilliant. :)

I can tell you didn’t go deep into the lore, which I understandable. The brotherhood of Makuta is meant to create rahi, or bionicle animals, which rakshi are. But that makuta, makuta teridax holds the mask of shadows, which allows him to bend the will of people and creatures through fear and deceit. That’s the whole point for 2001/2002 the rahi are attacking villages because makuta is causing them to become distressed, one group in particular, the bohrok. The toa mata fight the bohrok swarm and their queens and win, fall into a vat of energized liquid protodermis and emerge as the toa nuva, then fight the bohrok khal six bohrok who gained elemental powers through one means or another I forgot, and then the rakshi are sent to thwart takanuvas rise to toa-hood. Obviously this doesn’t happen, takanuva defeats makuta teridax, who preserves himself in a gaseous green protodermis form. Then they open the gate to the great spirits brain, metru nui. Where takanuva and the toa nuva stay, meanwhile jaller, hali and a handfull of other matoran are sent to the island of voya nui. Where they emerge from their canisters as the toa inika, where they fight the piraka for the mask of life, eventually leading them to the pit and a number of other things before they finally awaken th great spirit

Mata Nui isn't only the name of their island, its also the name of their "God", Mata Nui. He was imprisoned within the island by his brother Makuta, who became jealous that Mata Nui was being worshipped because of his three virtues of Unity, Duty, and Destiny. And the Mask of Light is actually the latest in terms of timeline aside from Bionicle: Legend Reborn. Bionicle 2 and 3 take place before Mask of light. And there's a fourth series that I actually had as a game on Gameboy advance called Bionicle: Maze of Shadows. There's so much lore to this series that not a lot of people know about.

That's the thing: The Bionicle lore was the beat from 2001 to 2003. Even though I agree Web of Shadows had some of the most emotional scenes, and Legends of Metru Nui had the most character development, Mask of Light wasn't bad either (just Lord of the Rings for kids), and it combined a perfectly competent movie with the best time of the lore. Also, the 2nd and 3rd movie being prequels means you can easily watch Mask of Light as a standalone, without having to worry about what comes afterwards 😊.

    1) Pewku was with Jaller when Makuta said hi to Takua.

    3) The Bohrok-Kal did not work for Makuta.

The reason that Takua is known as The Chronicler has to do with the original Mata-Nui Online Game (Which no longer works because it was made in Adobe Flash) where Takua is the POV Character that traveled the island doing things for the many settlements in solving more smaller scale problems that drifted below the radar for the Toa such as finding the cause of a disease plaguing Po-Koro, resolving the logistics of Onu-Koro's lava-pumps and Lightstone Deposits, saving Ga-Koro from a Tarakava attack with the help of Gali, taking part in an aerial dogfight against a Nui Rama Hive in order to rescue the other denizens of Le-Koro including Lewa. Eventually culminating in Takua working alongside several key Matoran from each Koro he had interacted with consistently over the course of his journey to mount a holding defense against the Makutas' army of Rahi that were baring down on Kini-Nui when the Toa went to confront Makuta.

No! The white Rakshi turns Tahu evil, not the poison from the green Rakshi!

    • @MemesToa
      @MemesToa 6 лет назад

Yet that's what the other Toa say. Gali herself says it's the poison that's responsible. However, I'd chalk that up to simple lack of information, since the only Rakshi power she knew of was green's poison.

Tahu turning evil (and then being un-evil'ed) was for the subplot of the toa not getting along. It's mentioned early on that the toa have forgotten they need each other. They're all sticking to their own villages, only meeting up when public appearances are necessary -- like the hockey game.
Tahu turning evil for a few hours is a clumsily handled way of exaggerating the tension within the team.
He's cured when the other toa work together to help him, solidifying the message that they need to work together. That's why they can defeat the rakshi at the end: when divided, just three rakshi were unstoppable, but united, all six rakshi were a piece of cake.
Like I said, the subplot is a bit clumsy and not given a lot of attention (and Pohatu and Onua being upbeat friendly with each other muddles the poignancy), but that was the purpose of evil Tahu.

3:12 In your Metru Nui review you said you were going to play MNOG. That explains why he's the Crhonicler.
One thing I didn't notice until I watched the film last night was that when Gali heals Tahu she turns grey, like Kanohi when the Toa take them off. After dipping her hands in the river for strength she becomes blue again.
The death thing at the end is handled way better in the book. Takutanuva gives up a portion of the Makuta's lifeforce as Jaller is more worthy, and then Takutanuva splits up and Takanuva is thrown into the crowd while Makuta is crushed by the door. Greg Farsthey (the writer) edited the cannon to tie the Jaller bit in with the Red Star... but that's all I'm saying about that.

tbh that last fightscene is such an adorable commitment to violent non-violence. just like how lego persisted with the idea that all the good guys had tools, not weapons. Which, not gonna lie, was kind of interesting symbolically. especially when the old heroes failed in the books and they had to make new toa to fight back the baddies with fucking GUNS lmao

Gali could cure the poison because poison is the enemy of the purity (the principal of water) and the rakshi of hunger beat Onua because hunger is the enemy of prosperity (the principal of earth).
The rakshi are basically the Bionicle version of the seven deadly sins.

The amnesia thing was kind of implemented well, since it was in first person, so you didn't know who you were until the end. Though if you visit the Tahraga of Fire, he will question how you don't recognise him or that place, hinting that you are a resident of Ta-Horo.

The Chronicler isn't so much a nickname as it is his job. He's one of the few Matoran not to revel in his specific societal niche, and as such is a bit of an adventurer which made him ideal for the job. Hahli actually _became_ the next Chronicler, but of course she turned Toa eventually as well. I believe Kopeke was the next official Chronicler after her... I wonder what happened to him in the long run.

it also means Warrior in Maroi. in fact a lot of the forien sounding gibberish from the first 3 years of the franchise was taken from the language as well as a lot of the mythos. basically Bionicle's inspiration was polynisian and oceanic mythology. the maroi of new zealand didnt like how they trademarked their language espeiclaly the term "Tohunga" which meant spiritual healer and wiseman but was used for helpless everyday vllagers. from 2002 and onward tohunga was changed to matoran and some of the older names got respellings to evade copyright or soemthing.

No no no, I mean, you're absolutely right to be curious...
I honestly think that Bionicle's story is one of the most interesting, layered and intricate (all words that unfortunately mean fucking impenetrably dense to new comers) stories I've ever encountered, made all the more superb by the fact that everything in the original run (2000-2010) fits together and tells an ongoing story, where as similar franchises, such as Star Wars, Transformers, pretty much all of Marvel and DC's stuff, are riddled with reboots, retcons and other words beginning with 're' that make them look like swiss cheese in comparison
BUT: the movies, while enjoyable, are not a good avenue to explore that story in my opinion, although the original trilogy are acceptable gateway drugs, for lack of a better phrase, to their respective years and, by extension: the franchise, they're not exactly representative of it as they don't address or skirt around some of the darker or just complex aspects to....everything
      My personal recomendation:
1: play (or watch a let's play) of MNOG (the Mata Nui Online Game) - online meaning that it was originally a browser based game, it's not a MMOG (worryingly similar initialism I know but I think/hope you get the idea)
2: Read the Novels and/or graphic novels - they've been out of print for a while so they can occasionally be hard to find but they're also usually dirt cheap
3: Go to the Bionicle Wiki and have a fucking field day - I say this because, for a long time, I couldn't find/afford the books so I learned about the whole story by going through the timeline page on the wiki - not ideal but if you have read some/most of them, this is a good way to straighten out confusion and just quickly grab ides and lesser known facts that help to tie everything together, and just learn what happened in the books you couldn't get or just didn't want
4: Once you've absorbed a tasteful amount of awesome from the above, settle in to watch or rewatch the movies and tear them to shreds with a smug grin on your face
If I've not scared you off with the shear enormity of my obsession with this series, welcome to the fan club!

IDK if it's the same in Denmark, but here in Sweden we actually have a couple of sports insults that could apply to kohlihead, the closest would be "Pucko" or "puckskalle" (puckface) which is derived from people becoming less intlligend by being hit in the head during ice hockey games. You you also have "Spännis" which is referred to the body stance that ice hockey players usually have with their body tense (Spänd in swedish).
So to me, hearing "Kohliskalle" was just another version of "pucko" or "puckskalle" when i saw the moview in Swedish as a kid :)

  • @cathleenmoyle1476

New Bionicle fan here. I've been reading the lore/books of the Bionicle story, and when I got to book 3, the one "Mask of Light" is based on, I found that both the book and the film are nearly identical, with a few scenes cut out.
Mostly everything from chapter 8 to the rest of the story is exactly the same, word for word, scene for scene, as in the “Mask of Light” film. And I love it. And Pewku is a cute crab. She acts more like a dog than actual crab. And it kind of makes me wonder why the others complain about the film version and not about the book version.
The scene where they’re at the kohli match, and Tahu and Gali are ill at ease. After reading the first two books prior to book 3, their strained relationship makes all the more sense to me. I know that people talk a lot about how in the books, it’s Kopaka whom Tahu bickers with the most, and how some complain that in the film, the Toa are mainly bickering and unable to do much, but that’s how the lore story also goes, and really, the first two books are of the Toa mainly bickering and unable to do much of anything (except when they're working together; I think that's done on purpose, so as to emphasize the whole unity thing).
Same with the Ta-Koro being destroyed, Lewa's interaction with Jaller and Takua, as well as their interaction with Kopaka, Takua abandoning the mission to find the seventh Toa after Makuta tries manipulating him, Jaller dying and being brought back to life by Takutanuva, and Takanuva having the kohli match with Makuta.
Even Lewa's odd way of talking is the exact same in the film. That's just the way he naturally talks, in all the books. And it's not just him, either. All the little Le-Matoran, except Matau probably, talk in a weird way.
    Oh, and about Jaller dying…
He dies in the book, just like in the film. In the short time, that he’s dead, though, it’s… very sad, and has spawned some more existential and dreadful thoughts in my head.
Takua finally becomes Takanuva, accepting what he’s supposed to do, and I now know that Takua is not really a Ta-Matoran, but an Av-Matoran, a Matoran of light.
When the stone gate crashes down on Takutanuva, instead of being revived by when they open the gate to Metru Nui, Takanuva comes back out of the debris right after Takutanuva is killed. And that reunion with Jaller, Takanuva, and Pewku was heartwarming after he brought him back to life. he still called Takanuva “Takua”…
While I personally thing "Mask of Light" was the weakest film in the trilogy, that's mainly do to the animation and some of the voice-acting, and I've come to appreciate this film a lot more, not only because I now know the full story, at least up to the book this film's based on, but also because the creators followed the lore so well. Perhaps if that had made a film each for the other two books, previous to "Mask of Light", there would be less complaints, as things would make all more sense.

As a dedicated no-life i honestly forgot that some of these things aren't explained in the movie itself, most of the plot holes are filled with some of the additional context provided by comics and other material, though that doesn't excuse them not being explained in greater detail in the movie as a standalone product
