I believe I recall PushingUpRoses referencing this game with apparent distaste for it in one video, but I've never actually seen anyone talk about it in-depth until now. Thanks for the video. :)
Now that you're uploading more frequently, I've noticed an increase in quality and I'm surprised but mostly happy and eager to watch your videos. They're not over the top but they're not lackluster either. They're just in the right spot. Keep it up!
Well, the unfortunate thing is cursed pretty badly. When you return her horn she becomes a proper unicorn, like the ones on little girls' colorful school folders. :P
The Rebuttal: Starting with King Graham. King Graham doesn't always wear a hat with a feather in it. In his old age, he has hung up his adventure outfit in the closet. Perhaps he is wearing a crown because he is at or near the throne. Maybe "NO!" is not a good expression. What would you say if you're pretty girl friend suddenly turned to stone? It might be "SARAH!!!!!" or "OH MY GOD!!!" "NOOOOO!" is pretty close to "OH MY GOD!!!" Remember, this is a royal story. We need a dignified as well as an exciting expression. 3-D is criticized. It's hard to get use to, but it can be done. King's Quest Mask of Eternity had the option of watching and playing the game in 1st person (through the eyes of Connor) or 3rd person (through the eyes of the player). Fighting with the fists is highly undesirable. It takes longer for Connor to defeat his enemy; and he is much more likely to die in the fight. It is best for Connor to go to his house first and get his dagger. There are very few clues in this game. It would have been helpful if Connor would have said out loud, "Look at all these monsters. I need to run home and get my dagger." The 16th century way of talking is interesting. I took note of some of the expressions Connor uttered like "Zounds." It's a lot better than using our modern F word. Scarfulhu praises King's Quest 6 and Alexander's ability to defeat his enemies using his wits and not a weapon. That is not realistic. We all know that princes in the old days commonly wore swords at their sides. Where was Prince Alexander's sword? Al-Hazareth even wore his sword as the bridegroom at his fake wedding ceremony. Movements may be awkward, but that's part of the game. You have to get use to moving Connor with your keyboard. There are some interesting movements like the long jump and the backwards flip. You have a point about King's Quest Mask of Eternity not being as colorful as the previous King's Quest games. Star Trek was like that. Star Trek with Kirk and Spock was very colorful. Then STTNG with Picard and Riker was not as colorful. Then Star Trek Voyager (with Capt. Janeway) and Star Trek Enterprise (with Capt. Archer) were even less colorful. You're right. Placing a key by a portrait is not a good idea. It could easily be found and taken by the janitor. Where would you hide a key? It would be on your person, or a nail on the wall, or in a drawer. As long as we've found the key, who's complaining? I'm not. Again, you complain too much. You complain about not dying in the Dimension of Death. Well, you die easy enough if you make a right turn after unlocking the gate to the compound and face five enemies when you reach the corner. And it's not too hard to die when you take on the Commander Skeleton who guards the Bridge of Life. You should have mentioned the Shadow Bane that threw Connor out of the Dimension of Death until he (Connor) acquired the magic ring. How did the young blond man and his sister get passed the Shadow Bane without the magic ring? And how did they get through the gate without the key? King's Quest 8 is not bad just because it's not King's Quest. King's Graham's children grew up and left the nest. SOMEONE had to take over. THAT'S what's bad about King's Quest 8. It has a bad ending, or, no ending at all. "The End" leaves you hanging. King Graham should have given the kingdom (of Daventry) over to Connor and Sarah (after they've gotten married) while he (King Graham) retires with his wife on the Isle of the Crown in the Land of the Green Isles. On the subject of insufficient clues again: The part where Connor must solve the blocks on the bridge to cross to the other side of the Barren Region is woefully wanting. I was unable to solve it. I had to buy the walk-through book to finish the game. Nostalgia isn't why I spent hours playing King's Quest 8. It's about a champion who is trying to save the world. What quest is greater than that?
You pretty much echoed my sentiments on this game exactly - unfairly hated, actually pretty good, just don't go in expecting King's Quest. Good vid, too. It's great to see your quality only getting better as you go on.
BUT D00D! If you rearrange the letters in "Sans", you get "Nass", which is almost "Ness"! Also, if you put "Sans" and "Ness" together, rearrange the letters, and change a few, you get "Bullshit"!
I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now, so happy to see how much your channel has grown since then. Congratulations on the 30K subscribers! ^_^
The year is 2000 and my parents have decided to buy a new house for our family. We spend the day moving into our new home and I am introduced to my new bedroom. Once left alone, 6 year old me begins to explore my new surroundings. Whilst looking through my new cupboards I see something plastic on one of the top shelf. I pull a chair towards the cupboard and stand on it to get a closer look. It is a copy of Kings Quest: The Mask of Eternity. I pull it out and run to the family computer (windows 95) and insert the disk. While it installs I flip through the brochure that came with the game. It details all the monsters and enemies I will have to face in my upcoming adventure. This is actually a true story and I think it's crazy that this is what started my love for games. It's awesome that someone out there unwittingly left a random game behind in the back of their cupboard and thag simple act changed how my life would play out. Thanks for the video. It was fun going down nostalgia alley and learning more about the background of the Kings Quest franchise.
Roberta Williams pretty much writing off Adventure Games is kinda... dickish in my mind, especially considering she pretty much MADE Adventure Games as we know it. I'm glad there are new Adventure Games coming out these days, especially from Wadjet Eye. Have you ever thought of reviewing any of those? Or is there a cut off date for your reviews?
I think Mask of Eternity is still good as it's own game, kinda like a spinoff, and I always picture in the King's Quest universe of every region and lands, it acts way differently with different themes and not trying to focus on one theme or one setting in themselves, like how Super Mario or Sonic stages does it, having a cotton-candy land to rusty-nails land, so every King Quest game themselves got different variety in their own games. I like Mask of Eternity because it tried something different, and not in a awful way... but in a "it is odd but could been worst" good way, and in a charming, grim and kinda goofy way.
I remember this game well. I was so excited as a kid getting this and it was ok till I hit the Dimension of Death which took forever, I thought the ghost characters were un-killable, and there was a game breaking glitch which needed patched. I was a poor kid with dial up internet and my parents were super restrictive so I just passed it. To this day thinking about this game brings up the Dimension of Death in my mind and the horror that awaited me after the ghost bear. The rest of the game is just a little forgettable until you get to the ice world, killed all the griffins, and got nothing to show for it, or if you played your cards right you can become invincible before the last boss. Also, only play on hard difficulty, otherwise it was too easy.
I like how this game outsold its superior LucasArts competition back in the day, and yet Grim Fandango is the one that became a cult classic and got a second chance at a new audience with its Remastered version. So much for sales, hmm?
@7:09 The farting monster that jumped out of the outhouse instakilled me on sight with his newspaper, too. I stopped playing immediately and never touched the game again. Don't call it a rage-quit, though. It was something else entirely.
14:26 OH XD!! That was such a clever and awesome reference XD!! I was thinking about Undertale when I heard the name Asriel, and you made it into an awesome and creative joke XD!! Great job XD!!
i went from atari 2600 to PC intel at 166 if i remember correctly. first game i played was King's Quest: Mask of Eternity. i went from atari graphics to kings quest... and i lived in a country with almost 0 gaming entertainment at the time, so i never played any other king quest or even ever seen a 3d game. This game blew my mind.
Are we just gonna ignore the fact that the sword at 13:10 moves right up his genitals and continues to turn around itself, so the cross guard is basically rubbing his... well genitals?!
I played this game when I was a kid, and even though I never beat it without cheating, I actually really liked it. I mean, it's no King's Quest, but it isn't exactly one of the worst games out there.
Very important question, how did you get the game to run? Are you using an older OS? Or compatiablity options on another version of windows? Please help!!!
It would make more sense if this was intended as a Quest for Glory game, but it's surprising it didn't start as one. What's also surprising is you mentioned them throwing away the fairy tale elements but not mention the lost Davidson version which does away with the violence, combat, gore and... religious themes.
There was no lost Davidson version. That came from one book not written by anyone affiliated with Sierra; the owner of the KQ Omnipedia took that and ran with it. Roberta clarified there was no Davidson version, but for a brief time when Davidson was in charge (Sept 1996-January 1997) she had project managers put above her by Davidson. But the Davidsons left CUC in January 1997, the game continued development until 1998. It started development in 1994 before Sierra was sold to CUC and combat was always part of the game from the beginning as well as the religious themes.
Damn i used to love Mask of Eternity when i was younger, and i still kinda do to this day. Mainly because it was my introduction to the Kings Quest franchise which has since become one of my favorites.
First episode I watch after subscribing and I learn your name. A new record! Still, I like your stuff Scarfulu. Even if I never heard of it. (Well, aside from Soul Blade, I grew up with Soul Caliber 2)
I think the monster in the outhouse thing was in emulation of Duke Nukem 3D. There was an article back in the day written about how Roberta Williams had been playing a bunch of that, the original Tomb Raider & Super Mario 64 to get her head into 3D game design. (Unfortunately, the results were a bit... uh... mixed at best.)
I'm finishing up this game soon myself. Haven't touched it in at least a decade and a half. Being the older lad that I am now, I was actually able to rid myself of the mind numbing choppiness that occurred in this game when I picked it up so many years ago. Once THAT was handled and I re-mapped some of the keys (jump is "insert"? I think not. *spacebar*), and went from arrow keys to the wsda, it became infinitely more playable. Oh, for more things that don't belong in a King Quest Game, you need only acquire Freeya's sceptre. Take it with you to the Dimension of Death and offer it to her. You will not believe your ears.
oh, so scarfthulu's name is connor and caddy's name is james. i learned two things today. also, sorry guys, my caps lock is broken. can someone overreact about this discovery for me?
When I was about 7 years old I'd watch my Grandfather play this game as well as Nox. He had like pages of notes on the puzzles you see more of later in the game and even let me help sometimes by using his healing items when his health got low. This video really doesn't show it but there were some cool puzzles and scenarios further on in the game and as far as I remember the really generic stuff is mostly around in the first couple worlds. I know for a lot of people it's just a clunky action adventure that's too disjointed from the series it's named for, but it was still a great game I feel and was a big piece of my childhood. It's like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. On its own, it's a great game with much to its own merit, but it has that "Amnesia" tag and so people were upset that it was as wildly different as it was. Also that unicorn really was a unicorn. You find its horn, restore it, and then it helps you iirc.
Glad I found you thru Caddy when you both did Broken Sword 2. I also have a soft spot for point and clicks, and it's a shame those games are just a product of a time long gone.
Easily your best video.
+Caddicarus You think so? I really wanted this one to stand out so I'm glad.
@@Scarfulhu who are you?
Lmfao this is probably the worst review on RUclips

I think the really funny part of that joke is the fact that it's not far from being just as rediculous as MatPat's theory.
You spelled "ridikulous" rong.
"I had the name first though, so get off my turf."
From now on, to get on Scarf's nerve's, im gonna name all my video game characters "Connor"
+MrShyguy999 do you wanna see jesus?
Scarfulhu Maybe.
+Scarfulhu Four videos in one month? You alright mate?
+Scarfulhu How goes Assassins Creed III?

Scarfulhu's obviously never seen Bourne Supremacy. Newspapers are brutal.
+sigh824 Or he's never read Homestuck.
+The G-Wing Or he's never played Paperboy.
Sunday newspapers are hefty fuckers
My grandfather enjoyed this game when I was a kid. I have fond memories watching him play it as a kid.

+Horatio Ringstinger I like you.

It's from a video called: "Killing a fuckin wee beastie with a Jaffa Cake" - just search it up.
Thanks, got it! By the way love your videos, keep up the great work
did scarfulhu
really make a joke about game theory's 'SANS IS NESS' theory?
okay you have one more subscriber

it was truly a sad day.
Hey scarfthulu, Great moves. Keep it up, proud of you!
It's funny how initial popularity doesn't mean anything in the long run since Grim Fandango is way more famous than King's Quest 8.

You actually had me laughing at 14:53! This is by far your best video yet! Keep up the good work! :)
About that Asriel bit...
In this world, it's MEME or BE MEMED.
Nah but really congrats on 3k subs. You've earned another one BTW.
The setup for that hybrid joke was brilliant. Great review guy, thanks for sharing!
-Son, we're taking away your dramatic endings and sending you to boarding school!

You've been killin' it with this new release schedule!!!
I have been looking for a good review of this game for ages! Great to see this one!
the Ness from earthbound joke was too perfect xD
I liked this game pretty much. Also your game theory joke was perfect.
I love to see the new content on a regular basis. Scarfulu videos just get my dopamine levels rising lol 😊
One of my childhood favourites. Has a great atmosphere and gameplay even the controls are slightly shoddy at times. Well worth a play
congrats on 30,000 subscribers!
Conner just seeing your save names for a split second was one of the funniest things in this video
I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now, so happy to see how much your channel has grown since then. Congratulations on the 30K subscribers! ^_^
I'm not gonna lie I discovered you this week and watch all your vids in a day
+Z Warrior You're not the only one who did that
OOooooh yes, another Scarfulhu video. I love this new upload rate!
I hadn't the slightest idea that he was going for a "Sans is Ness" theory reference there xD Nice one!
I've been subbed for a many moons, keep up the good work!
When this came out, my computer wasn't anywhere near powerful enough to run it.
Scarf I love you please never stop. Your voice makes me love
10:40 HOLY SHIT xD
That HAS to be one of the best jokes I've ever seen in a video :'D
I'm glad to see you're getting so many subs, love your stuff man
3:33 was that Caddy's sister??
yah
I love this game :(
The year is 2000 and my parents have decided to buy a new house for our family.
I think Mask of Eternity is still good as it's own game, kinda like a spinoff,
and I always picture in the King's Quest universe of every region and lands,
it acts way differently with different themes and not trying to focus on one theme or one setting in themselves,
like how Super Mario or Sonic stages does it, having a cotton-candy land to rusty-nails land,
so every King Quest game themselves got different variety in their own games.
I like Mask of Eternity because it tried something different, and not in a awful way...
but in a "it is odd but could been worst" good way, and in a charming, grim and kinda goofy way.
easily one my favourite channels on youtube...on to the next 30000
Your name is Connor? My name is Connor too man!
i just LOVE that at 14:52 you can see where he wears his headphones lol.
That jab at game theory was amazing.
What was that other game that was shown in 9:14 ?
You used Professor Juice in your video.
I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE
Great video, can't wait for more.
Doesn't make an Undertale joke but makes a "Is Sans Ness" joke.
#exposed
14:26 OH XD!! That was such a clever and awesome reference XD!!
I was thinking about Undertale when I heard the name Asriel, and you made it into an awesome and creative joke XD!!
Great job XD!!
I'm curious what you think of King's Quest 2015.
Hey Scarfulhu, what's the music that kicks up at 11:42? Is that from the dimension of death area, or another game? Really digging it.
The Tomb of Sammun-Mak's theme from Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse. ruclips.net/video/9S-9RMGdLCU/видео.html

Someone could pass for a Maurice LaMarche.
Loved hearing the Legend of Kyrandia music.
Scarfulhu pls. I was about to fix dinner but now I have to watch this.
I was not ready for the Doctor Who reference, but I appreciate it.
Wow Scarfulhu! Great moves, keep it up
That's one big mountain scarf. I wonder how long it took to make.
FINALLY! YES! FINALLY! Somebody I follow that does adventure games reviewed Mask of Eternity!!!
I played this game when I was a kid, and even though I never beat it without cheating, I actually really liked it. I mean, it's no King's Quest, but it isn't exactly one of the worst games out there.
it's no King's Quest, but at least it's also not Ultima 9.
Very important question, how did you get the game to run? Are you using an older OS? Or compatiablity options on another version of windows? Please help!!!

Thank you so much for the joke on Game Theory
Also hi there Rosie.

2:58 Cheers Scarfulhu
-Edit, that awkward moment when you realize he's also called Connor.
King's Quest 8 was my first King's Quest, and it led me to eventually buy the old 'King's Quest Coleccition' :P

was that good enough?
Tianna Sadie Perfect.
Also I lied. :)
if you ever did a full review of Grim Fandango or any Tim Schaefer game, it'd make my life
When I was about 7 years old I'd watch my Grandfather play this game as well as Nox.
9:30 What even is water physics
oh, hey, Scarfulhu, you have a classic Kopaka on your shelf. Cool. Bionicle respect.
great review! and I need to say this, you remind me of Leo Dicaprio in the "Man in the Iron mask" film hahaha
I wonder where 13:48 came from...
oh man what bionicle is that in the backgrownd?
I have never seen someone rock glasses with so much swag
+m.taimoor Azam They're designer glasses, these ones. Cost me a pretty penny.
Glad I found you thru Caddy when you both did Broken Sword 2. I also have a soft spot for point and clicks, and it's a shame those games are just a product of a time long gone.
And to that undertale reference I'm gonna say the one smart thing that came to my head: "Have you ever heard, of a talking flower?"
This game is basically "King's Quest" in-name-only.
