Charles didn't dunk with 1 hand. He dunked with 2. Everyone who has ever dunked a ball knows that its much tougher dunking with 2 hands is more exhausting and difficult than dunking with 1. Charles was BEAST
Even though Charles himself says he was past his prime in Houston, he still was a bad mamma jamma. FUN FACT: His career high in rebounds (33) was made while he played with Rockets.
That is because he played with Hakeem and therefore focused more on rebounding. Had he focused more on rebounding throughout his career, he would have had multiple rebounding titles (I'd say close to ten).
Hakeem was 36 and Shaq 27 in this game. Hakeem still moved laterally really well in this video, but didn't have the same quick hops he always did in his prime. But also it was the first game of the lockout season and Hakeem was in foul trouble ( I think he fouled out) guarding Shaq.
Hakeem should have retired this year, he was a shadow of himself. Remember this game, Shaq was eating Hakeem alive and Kobe was locking Pippen up, Chuck had one his best games as a rocket.
This clip shows just how good Barkely was. This was at the tail end of his career and he arguably outplayed Shaq. Totally carried the offensive load for his team.
+EveryDayIsAGoodDay ask Allen iverson ask Jason Kidd ask tmac ask every nba superstar who's played against Kobe he's a top 5 man to man defender of all time
Pippen was getting OWNED BY Bryant like left and right, Bryant showed no only no respect for that man Pippen but he didn't even showed any regard as Bryant played savage defense on that poor man. This must of been opening night in the shortened season of 98-99 due to the fact that the Great Western Form was shut down after the 98-99 season and the Lakers we're still wearing the old Laker jersey's.
in the same series pippen had an off the charts performnce with 37 and he torched kobe..look for it there are highlights available..the comments are vice versa about how he devoured young kobe..also mj would have been way more obvious as a superstar in this game having more dominant offensive presense than kobe does here..i mean this rockets team wouldnt have stopped him from owning the offense right? also charles barkley is definetely the second best most unguardable player of the 90s and here you can see why..old,injured and fat and yet he just wrecks the paint while trashtalking everyone in the court and lakers bench..olajugon and malone are the other two that stand above the rest but chuck was a very unique player..bad drafting luck ,domino's and the goat deprived him from a couple of rings...
Crazy that Shaq got swept out of the playoffs basically every year from 95 till 99. That's probably why we went crazy in '00. A great big man should never miss the playoffs or get swept. Wilt should be the GOAT but his productivity went down in the playoffs and he only won one ring during the Russell era.
Peter Paul. Olajuwon skills NEVER eroded, but his athleticism(his knees) did. And the year that happened was the very season this game was played, loser. #checkhiscareerstats
This was Hakeem's last valuable year. He played about 35 mpg and averaged 19 and 10. After this, he played 3 more years averaging about 25 mpg and 10 and 7.
"Give me the fucking ball" said Sir Charles as he crashed the boards like a man gone mad. He matches wits with the legendary beast in hopes that his people will see that a God can bleed. Charles 3:16
it was here Shaq was at his fittest and strongest, the last time he had somewhat his Orlando shape.. The following season '00 he came in 50 pounds heavier and was finished nearly 5 years later...
Johannes Genard that was the end of his career, same with charles, though this seems to be one of his last good games. Pippen had a few more decent years, but you can just see in this clip the rockets were just old, and the way the lakers were playing offensively you can see what happens when you really have a dominant tall big man, because it forces a collapse on him to try to stop him, which opens another guy and his height allows him the vision to find the open man.
He was like 37 I think, so Kobe's age now. He probably wasn't able to elevate like he used to and probably couldn't dream shake quite as quickly. I'm not sure if he had an injury cause he only played 44 games that season. Shaq was probably happy he was finally able to outdo him lol, but we'll always remember what Dream did to him in the 95 finals. Not just what he did to Shaq, but basically every other center in the 90s. IMO Dream, Wilt, and Kareem are the best centers ever.
First game of a lockout season and he got in foul trouble guarding Shaq. Plus he was 36... going against 27 year old Shaq - probably about as beast mode as Shaq ever was.
This was like his 15th season in the league. The dude had nothing left to prove lol. You see Chuck playing so hard because he still had a chip on his shoulder. He still hadn't won a championship in his career. Hakeem and Pippen were close to done, although Pip did have some decent years left in the tank. What made Hakeem so great in his prime as his quickness and motor. You combine that with great footwork, touch and basketball IQ and you get a dominant force on both ends of the court. At this point, he didn't have the lift, quickness, motor or determination to influence the game the way he did the first 10+ years of his prestigious career. Shaq was also entering his peak years, so it was not going to be a good match-up for Hakeem. But these sort of things are necessary though. The young Lion is not going to take over the kingdom softly, he will rip it out of the OGs hands with ferocity.
Fact: O'neal and Barkley are number 1 and 2 respectively in 2 point fg% of all the the top 50 NBA scorers in history. They are literally the most efficient post players in history of the top scorers. Charles is number 3 when you include 3pt fg%, because he sucked at those.
A few things are not talked about.. Barkley is 6’4 1/2.. Folks think he is taller.. he is not.. Barkley lead the league for 3 years is rebounding.. His jumping ability was off the charts. On the shaq side.. Shaq bullied folks and should of been called for pushing and shoving.. Shaq weighted over 300 pounds and .. played like a bulldozer..The league ignored this for years because he was in LA.. Folks who guarded shaq were blown out by his shoving weight.. That’s a foul.. a charge.. not a score.. So for me and a fan since 1961 I never ever liked shaq.. total jerk attitude too.
Hakeem was kinda washed by this point no disrespect he w@s going against prime shaq who viewed him as a pioneer but I sense Barkley frustrated with Hakeem’s inability to rebound or get stops around Shaqs gravity
A couple of points: Shaq and Barkley weren't playing each other, and therefore, not a duel. 2. Excellent job of highlighting why Shaq was one of the worst players in NBA history. It's all on display. His ability to foul every time down the court on either end. The 5 ft perimeter where he might be able to hit a basket. His ridiculous FT percentage. The inability to play D. If the league hadn't not-so-secretly changed the rules for him, he wouldn't have made it through an entire season.
Barkley was old, fat, past his prime and basically on his last legs, and was STILL giving work to these guys! Such a phenomenal talent.
Chuck was about 35 years old in that game and still tough as nails!
He looked a bit more trimmed in this game than most games I saw him in a Rockets uniform too.
This is basketball at it’s finest miss it soo much !!

Also it's hard to block u when u dunk 2 hard and usually when they try its a foul
I remember this game, Charles was my favorite since 1990, but I also the Lakers were my team. This was a very enjoyable game
how beautiful the game was. utilizing every position unlike today where teams draw up plays for threes
I agree this was basketball not a 3 point contest
Rest in peace Kobe 🕊❤️🌹
