That layup at 1:43 vs MIN was in 98. He pulled a stomach muscle on a post move before that play. Missed 22 gms thereafter. That vicious spin and dunk at 2:07 vs PHX was in 97. That was his return game after a nasty knee hyperextension at MIN where the toe of his shoe came down on the heel of an opponent causing his leg to jolt hard backwards. The kind of thing that makes your balls retract just watching it on TV. He had a fractured tibia, a partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament and a torn capsule (whatever that is). He was incorrectly cleared to go back into the game after the fall and he scored the next 10 points of the game, with two power dunks before he started to feel the pain. That's the kind of monster this guy was. He just laid there on the floor. Lesser humans would've been writhing around in pain. He required surgery, was in a hard cast and missed 30+ games, but came back at the end of 97. After that season, his knee was never problematic again until he got old. That PHX gm was on NBC. You can see the brace on his knee. If you consider this guy's weight and some of the spins and guard moves he would do, it was remarkable that he wasn't an injury case like SO MANY other Cs of his weight range. He was incredibly sturdy for the most part.
Your right. Those injuries showed just how much of a freak of nature Shaquille was. People forget this was Shaq in his 5 & 6 Seasons. He was the most powerful dunker ever. Hard to dispute. I've been a Laker fan for nearly 30 yrs, saw his whole stint here. Some of his spike power dunks went down with such velocity. You're talking about Kemp, but with 340 lbs (pre fat Kemp). The audio on certain dunks from the rim mic were sounds that I've NEVER heard any other player make. I think it was the strain of the snap-back rim structure or something, the metal spring creaking under his weight. Hard to explain, but I liken it to one of Bo Jackson's baseball coaches saying the crack of Bo's bat sounded like no other player he ever coached in 40 yrs. The dunk at 2:30 was one of those spike dunks. That was a preseason game from 97 at San Diego Sports Arena. I remember the sound of his wrist hitting the rim. I have that game in my collection still.
