Replacing Power Window Regulator/Motor on 97-05 Buick Century

- Опубликовано: 21 май 2011
- Here is how to replace a window regulator and motor in a 97-05 Buick Century. This procedure is similar in most vehicles. Sometimes the manufacturer uses rivets instead of bolts, but in that case you can just drill out the rivets and use nuts and bolts if there is room, or just replace the rivets if you have a rivet gun. This part only cost $50 (free shipping) from 1aauto.com for this application, and only took approximately 35 minutes to install. If you have any questions, just use the comments section or message me!

Thank you so much for such a thorough guide. I was able to fix my 21 year old century with all the credit going to you for walking me through every step and eBay for having the part!
God Bless those of who that share knowledge with those of us mechanically declined people! Easy job and my buick windows go up and down as they should. I bought the replacement motor from a junk yard. Total cost of job: $45. Thanks again!
Just bought my 1999 Buick century with 87,000 original miles. Both the rear right window, and the front driver window just gave out at the exact same time. Thanks for this informative video. Definitely will follow it through. God bless
Update: I just replaced BOTH front windows in under an hour.
Thank you again for the walk through. It was perfect!
Excellent! I'm glad the video was able to provide the help you needed.
This video proved invaluable. I'd paid for the same job to be done on the opposite window a year or two ago. I won't say just how much.
I bought the regulator/motor assy here locally and had my 17 year old son help me with the job.
This took about an hour and went EXACTLY as this video showed.
MANY thanks!!
You're welcome. It's too bad you didn't see the video before the first window! I'm glad the video was able to help you out.
This video saved me hundreds of dollars! I was able to replace all of my window motors and regulators ( they were all broken 😔 ) and now they all work! Thank you so much for sharing! I am so grateful!
+Jjacques That's great! You're very welcome. I'm glad the video was useful for you.
This is one of the best how to videos on YT! Note: Pry the passenger side window switch from the front. Everything else is spot on. Thank you so much for your time, Bill
Thank you very much!
Got it done this morning. Your advice really helped me have the confidence to do it myself. It turned out to be one of the easiest DIY car projects I've ever done. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for this! Between both front windows and the multi-function switch on my wife's 97, your videos have saved me a bunch on labor with keeping it running and working well.
Right on, thank you very much for putting this video on, I'm not a car mechanic to say the least but after watching this I knew exactly what to do, you made my life very simple. 👍✌️🙏
This was a big help for me. I forgot to put that bracket back in and couldn't figure out where it went... after seeing this, I see it's the bracket that holds the door panel on! Thanks a million!
just swapped the front driver side today. both rear need replacement, passenger FR still works. i noticed the cables had to twist for the motor to mount properly, wasnt sure if that was the case, but this vid verified it for me. workin fine. Thanks for makin this vid!
Thanks for putting this up. My wife's Buick window just died the other day and although I've done some minor repairs before I'd never replaced a regulator before. I zip tied it up for now (it's been raining of course), but I'll be using this info to fix the problem later this week.
I have to do this today on my 1999 BUICK CENTURY. This video is a great guide!
Your video helped me fix the passenger side window in my 01 buick century. Thanks for the upload, I came back a couple times to make sure I knew what I was doing, I'm not too car savvy, so I appreciate it. :)
Great video, very informational! I was quoted near 300 to get it done on my 03 Regal and then THANKFULLY found this video. It was as easy as you make it look and I had it done in less than an hour. I didn't undo any of the wires (except the tweeter and of course the wire connection going to the window motor) & just let the door panel hang under the door. I zip tied the wiring harness to the door frame and to hold up the window while I was working I just jammed an old tennis shoe in one of the holes in the door frame near the top to keep the window up (I live in AZ and have the windows tinted so didnt want to put tape on that!). Ordered the part online @ 1A Auto and saved myself another $50 (the part locally at O'Reilly and Advanced Auto was almost $100!). Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!!
thank you for this video. My regulators arrived in the mail today, and I plan to install tomorrow (threat of rain today)
Thanks to your video, I'm fully confident that it will go well.
thanks to this video (and the proper tools) the drivers side window is now able to go up and down without issue. 2001 buick regal. Thanks for the video :) saved us labor costs to have a pro do the job. just 92 bucks for the kit.
Excellent! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this on video. Also, I really appreciate you posting where you ordered the part as it was very easy to find it on their site. I successfully replaced it in under an hour thanks to you.
Brett Wolff That's great, Brett! I'm glad the video was useful.
Thanks! Ordered the part from Amazon for $40 (O'Reilly wanted $70) and it was a smooth repair. Your video was a great help.
Rock auto is even cheaper, it’s my go to for any parts
You are the man!!!!!!!!!! You saved me a lot of money. Didn't have to take it to the shop. Did it myself. You alright 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Remember, all this stuff makes it easier to install in the factory. Loosen all the keyhole bolts to slide it out.
The lower left bolt is the locator. It locates the whole assembly after its slipped in the keyholes.
You did a thorough job. My window is back left. Thanks!
Great informational video. I just got a 2002 Buick Century and all the window regulators are broken. For the price I got it though, I don't mind paying to replace just the front two. Thanks!
I would like to say thank you VERY much for this video.. it is EXTREMELY informative! I picked up a '98 regal that's having this exact same issue. from the looks everything is exactly the same as on yours.. I was worried about having it replaced, but now in kind of looking forward to (at least trying) do it myself!
***** It should be almost identical! Good luck with the repair. You shouldn't have any problems.
watched your video last night fixed this morning cable was broken on my regulator only took me about 15 min for r/r thanks
thanks man for posting this I had a similar problem with my 2003 century...gear in the motor ate through the housing...shredded the cable....it was a mess...so need to replace whole thing...this video helped and saved me money!!!
Your video rocks! I replaced the motor with some effort on my mother in law's 2002 buick century. Only problem was window was off track in the rubber on the sides of the window. Hard to get back on. Total time was 2 hours including going to parts store. Total cost was $99.35
Thanks You!! You Just Saved me 350.00 Bucks, I really appreciate your video, you made it seem so easy , And It was. I followed your steps and every thing come out working smoothly. I replace the regulator and motor.
thank you,i watch your video and I just changed my power window regulator and now I can open and close my window glass
Thanks! You gave me the confidence to tackle this... and saved me over $300. Thank you.
Jon Draheim Awesome! I'm glad I could help.
Thanks for the vid! I knew how to do this, but watching it done first helped a lot.
This tutorial was exactly what I was looking for, thanks.
+Michael Smith You're welcome! I hope the repair was successful.
Just fixed my car. Took about an hour. Thank you very much. Also fixed a speaker I didn't know was broken. LOL BTW, I think the one bolt is set w/o a larger hole so god forbid the nuts ever loosen, the regulator can not jump out of the door. Once again, thank you very much for the help!!!
Steven Johnson That's great! Hopefully it will be a while before you need to repair the other windows.
Nice video, glad to see I don't expect to run into rivets! Thanks for posting
Thanks a lot! I had BOTH front windows break down in a month.
This video gave me the confidence to do this repair myself. Saved around $300-400 per window.
Excellent!! I'm glad everything went alright for you. Thanks for letting me know how it went. I like to hear feedback!
Thanks Prouisorsapientiae, you're a pretty nice guy! Thanks again for posting the video. When warmer weather hits St.Louis again, I'll be referring to this video when I change out the Window Regulator/Motor on a friends 98' Century!
You're welcome, my friend! I have family in Columbia, but haven't made it to Missouri yet. Good luck with the installation!
every freaking buick century has this issue. Mine does right now too lol. Thanks
Awesome video! You may well have saved me hundreds of dollars in repair costs!
I have one of these to do on a 2004 Buick Regal. I know the Century and Regal are the same car. I'm hoping the Regal has bolts in it like your Century did. I did the driver's window regulator/power window motor assembly on a Ford E350 passenger van. Since the new regulator and motor assembly for that truck came with new bolts it was a lot easier and faster to cut the rivet heads off than drill them out.
I've been driving around in Arizona without working windows for like 4 years- all the shops wanted 250$ per window! I just found a place that had all 4 for less than 170$ shipped, so thanks for saving me a ton of cash. Or rather- thanks for getting my windows to work ^_^ It sucks driving a solar oven out here and looking like an idiot opening your door at the drive thru! >.
Oh man, you just saved me a boat load of un-necessary work. My wife's car has the exact same problem as yours. Thank for the video....;-)
Good luck with the repair!
Appreciate video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Tarbbatigan Cars Rehabilitation Tip (probably on Google)? It is a smashing one off product for learning how to repair your car the easy way minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cooworker at last got great success with it.
I have now replaced 3 out of the 4, thanks again for this.
MTH23 No problem!
Your the man buddy I just ordered for AdvancedAutoParts. I got away with holding the button and forcing it up for quite some time. That has ended lol .. I feel good about doing it with your video :D
Good luck with the install! It will be nice having a properly functioning window again.
Thanks for the video! Just finished the repair using the video as a guide. Can't say thanks enough...
Jamie Deason Excellent. Hopefully you will not need it for the other windows!
Another good video. Paid to have mine fixed but huge gap remains between the panel and door. wish Video showed that. Yes this seems to the be big issue with Buick Centuries, 3 windows had to be replaced and 1 of them 2 times!
Thanks for the video and info, my back window kept sliding down. I opted to make it stay up wire, but now I know how fix it if time and money permits.
Hope that fixes it!
Doing the job again today. The dorman replacement lasted about 2.5 years. Installed at beginning of October 2016 in my 2002 century.
The dorman regulator part was good no pully damage but the motor was fried. Has to remove the motor and spin the pully with a pair of needle nose pliers.
This is the benefit of having crank windows ... thanks for the video! Replacing a friends regulator tomorrow for $75 lol
Thanks very much. Most helpful. Straight forward and mine is completed successfully. Much appreciated overview.
. . . Great video. You're the "Norm Abrams" of car doors, now!
Haha, I remember Norm. Thanks!
No problem! You will be just fine. It will be nice to not have to worry about keeping the rain out any longer!
Thank very much for this video made it so much easier
Dude, It would have been nice to SEE you remove and install it! But I do thank you for making the video!
Yes, it definitely would have helped. When I explain things, I tend to do it as if I'm explaining it to myself, instead of putting myself into someones shoes who can't visualize obvious steps or procedures, or at least what I would consider obvious. I need to take that into consideration. Thanks for the comment!
Yeah... I was honestly hoping this video would show me how to do this repair, but unfortunately, I do not feel comfortable trying based on this information. You say to just simply remove the pins from around the outside, but you don't show it at all.
That's great! It's nice being able to do your own repairs and save money.
Thank you very much..that was a very very helpful video..It helped me a lot since I never did this before..Thanks again
Raymond Gauldin You're welcome, Raymond!
I don't know enough about your terminology to follow this. However, I will try it.
Excellent job / video / workshop. Thanks for sharing your expertise and common sense. I have a '94 Regal which will be essentially the same procedure.
Querencias7 You're welcome! Good luck with the installation.
Querencias7 How did that work out for you? I have a '94 Regal as well and am thinking of doing the same. Especially when it's cold out, my windows take forever to go up/down. I tried taking the front passenger door panel off, but there seems to be a clip somewhere keeping it on that I just can't seem to find.
I found this video helpful. I also would've liked to see the out, and in, of the parts...
Great instructions! Mine stopped working yesterday, started to take it apart and contemplated on taking it to the shop until I found your video. Your video is very descriptive and I got the pulley style which cost $95. Works very well, the old one was replaced two years ago by previous owner and it never worked right, I always had to hold the window to keep it on the track.
Thanks very much!
+Jon Santos That's great, Jon! I'm glad the job went okay for you.
Thanks a ton for posting this!
just did mine 45 minutes, thanks a million
Mary Alampi Excellent! I'm glad the video was able to help.
Yes, they are basically the same set-up. A few people in the comments have also done the rears with no problem!
Heartfelt thanks for this video. It was a great help.
David Ludwig You're welcome! I'm glad it was able to help.
Excellent! I'm glad the video was useful for you.
Thank you Prouisorsapientiae! Very helpful!
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped!
There are a lot of tutorials for this exact problem with these old Buicks. Starting to think this is super common for these
Hey, thanks so much for posting this. I'm going to save myself a few hundred bucks by replacing two of these suckers. Hopefully I can, in turn, help others save $$ too.
Good luck, Marvin!
Fantastic I now have confidence to do this. Thank you Lord bless.
Nice job. Thanks for posting
I did it. She still looks like a beater, but she runs well and that new automatic window though ;)
SAME PROB MAN THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO SAVED ME A LOT OF MONEY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Excellent! I'm glad the video helped.
What can be done for the dash peeling up? I have a 2002 buick and my 2001 did it also.
It's easier to just pull the window out than to deal with the tape residue left on the window afterwards...enables a good cleaning too.....hope this will also help
Great video, I have just one question. I have a friend with a 2005 where the window came down when he hit a bump, Michigan roads, and it doesn’t come back up. Now I believe that it’s a shortage somewhere, but, it we can’t find that can we just push the arm up to elevate the window so it’ll just stay up until he can buy the parts or will it drop over time?
You saved me a gazillion dollars, thank you.
bud, Thank you! really helped and saved me money
You're welcome!
No problem! It's always good to save money on something like this.
Thank you very much. Great help !!!!
dalemaxx12 You're welcome!
What kind of thinner do you used to make the rain guard/water shield sticky again? I couldn't quite make out what you said in the video. Thanks.
I followed your steps, all connected and when I did the test up the window, stop at the middle. I checked the glass and is like not aligned and the glass is going outside of the channel or line you know WhatvI said. How can I fixed?
I have a 95 Park Ave. My window motor is working but only rolls window down 1/4 of the way. I can lower the window all the way with a hand on each side. After lubing, it goes down with ease. Once down, it will only roll up 1/4 of the way, and motor just chugs. But I can raise window with both hands and lock it in place my hitting the roll up button. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A BAD MOTOR? Is there a nylon gear or something that is worn out that could be replaced, or best to just buy a new motor assembly?
This video was a huge aid in getting the motor replaced on moms car.
Any chance you might have suggestions on replacing L side power mirror on same car (2000 Buick Century)?
Many thanks!
would the 2005 Buick Lucerne CXL have same window regulator parts?
Thanks for this great video..I have a question though...what is that metal latch that you took the torque screws off?
Awesome video.
If all windows do not work do you need to have a new motor & regulator for each window?
I got my motor bit my window want let down at all so how do I get to the screws to unhook the window
Thank you for your video, it was so helpful! : >
Great! I'm glad the video was useful.
How similiar will this be for a 97 LeSabre? I bought the correct motor at AutoZone and have the door panel off.
Im unable to unplug the front electrical connection on the motor...is there a trick to it?
Can anyone offer help?
Replaced rear driver regulator, hooked up motor to see if carrier would move up and down, since couldn't move it by hand. Then installed it, and bolted window on. Window doesn't completely close or open without gripping window with hands and helping it.... And polarity is reversed (ie, up moves it down, and visa versa)!!! Kinda disappointed. Was my new part not the correct part, or maybe somehow bad? Bought it at Autozone, it was 2nd one. First one was obviously wrong part, so took old regulator along, when buying the 2nd one. Trying to stay positive.....
Very helpful.
How do I know if this is what went out, or if it's a fuse or simply ground wire not touching? All my windows are not raising or lowering, but my power mirrors are working. WHen my windows stareted going out, it was random, and finally I heard a lot of grinding whenever I tried to roll up or down. Ultimately none of the windows roll up or down anymore.
What size where the bolts on this car please?
Fixing to replace the window motor on our 2003 Century. But it's the rear window (passenger side). Is it the same basic steps to do? Also, is removing the door skin an easy task as far as not breaking the "tabs" that hold it on? I usually have bad luck with breaking most of them. Lastly, can just the motor be replaced or is the motor tied into the regulator?
Thanks for any help!
Does this also work for the back passenger windows? Are they all the same? Please and thank you very much.
Is this for when the window won't stay up??? I still hear the motor running, but the window won't go up...
