  • In Episode 4 of the Best Mid-Size Retro Motorcycle (For Me) Series, join me, Adrian, as I tackle the restoration of a dirt-cheap and potentially stolen Moto Guzzi V7. I'll try my best to address:
    0:00 Video + Series Intro
    0:39 Aesthetic Problems & Solutions
    3:28 Mechanical Issues & Solutions
    6:45 Was It Worth It?
    1. Aesthetic Challenges & Solutions:
My Moto Guzzi V7 only cost $2,000, but it sure was ugly! Watch as I address spray-paint disasters on the gas tank, side covers, and fenders. Learn from my DIY attempts to bring the V7's aesthetic back to life, with a few hiccups along the way.
    👉 Pro Tips:
    - Paint remover works great on metal (not so good on plastic in the winter)
    - Motorcycle tank dent pullers also struggle in the cold
    - Plastic in general is hard to repaint
    - Your local dealer can help (thank you to Studio Cycle)
    2. Mechanical Issues (Potentially Sorted):
Getting this V7 to startup and run smoothly was a battle. I discovered rust in the tank, and called in Carlo at Moto Motori for a little help. He discovered even more problems including a failing fuel pump, fuel filter, and screen. We'll also take a look at what's to come, IF this Moto Guzzi makes it through to the next round in the contest.
    👉 Pro Tips:
    - Always make sure a motorcycle is cold before you buy it
    - Always look inside the gas tank before you buy
    - If a fuel injected motorcycle is struggling to run right, investigate out the fuel pump
    3. Cost Analysis & Future Prospects:
Delve into the financial aspect of this Moto Guzzi V7 rescue mission. After spending $2,000 on this motorcycle, how much more did I have to spend? Was it worth it? What's still to come?
    👉 Pro Tips:
    - Some things are worth doing yourself, some aren't
    - Be patient and use the right stuff for the job
    - Be prepared for long delays on parts

Hey Everyone, happy new year! Just want to make some things clear.
    1) The person I bought from was not a thief, they were a super nice couple that had bought it from a used car dealership that in turned bought it from an auction company, that was selling the motorcycle on behalf of an insurance company that owned the V7.
    2) The auction company listed the primary damage as "vandalism". I've seen pictures from the auction (it sold for only $975!) and it looks about the same as when I bought it more or less.
    3) It seems that the V7 was stolen, repainted, and then because the thief did not have a key to refuel, opened up the tank at the gas cap. That would explain the spill that ruined the spray paint job, it would also explain why there is a seal under the gas cap missing.
    4) The lack of the seal could also explain why the tank had so much rust in it, as the seal should have been there to keep the moisture out.
Happy new year everyone! Sorry for the delay getting these out. Holidays + vacation + getting sick slowed me down.
I didn't want to mention this in the video as it would have just added a lot more time and detail than I think most people care for... but I did want to include this for completeness in case anyone cares :)

Thank you for the clarification on the history of the Guzzi, good to know if and/or when you sell it for all your viewers to be aware off.

I just bought a RE GT 650 to add to my collection but Moto guzzi was my first choice and was getting a great deal on a 2018 but it got sold before I could make up my mind. I would totally buy the Guzzi if you decide to sell it.

Good lord! That MG has been abused in the last 10 years. MGs are near and dear to my heart, so that would be my choice. 😉

This is a great series. I'm not gonna comment on which one you should keep - it's too personal :D
BUT, I will say that when you rattle can a paint job, add an epoxy clear coat, like 2k... it's a bit pricey but gives a much better finish. That's what I did with my Vulcan 800 when I painted the tins in my shed. I also did it in August, so it was plenty warm. Just my $.02 on the matter :D

Hey Adrian, good job on bring it back to life. I once restored a Honda 500 for a friend. It to had a rusted gas tank. I did not have a acid wash instead i took a handful of stoves and a quarter tank of gas and sat in the garage shaking the tank back and forth until the tank was clean. Added a new fuel filter and it was good to go. Looking forward to the next video, cheers Dave

Love the series! As much as I try to stay neutral, I can't help but root for my biases which are the Guzzi and Royal Enfield. I love the value they provide for the money.
Can't wait for the next episode!
PS: to have a working Guzzi V7 for under 3k is an absurdly great deal.

Great work! It's worth it. I have ordered a few things from Studio Cycle which is the shop you mentioned. Being in BC I was impressed that they arrived so promptly and really appreciate the efforts of Graham in tracking down fastener bolts from Piaggio to ensure customer satisfaction.

I am hoping to get a Guzzi in the near future. I love those bikes and they are very quirky in their own right, but they are usually a rock solid bike with good solid reliable mechanicals.

Keep the Guzzi, I currently have 2014 V7 exact same bike as yours. Bought it 2 years ago with 14k miles currently has 25k…gets smoother and more smiles as the miles add up. The cold start is a known issue with 2013-16 v7’s just let it warm up or you can have the dealer install newer/updated ecu map. Another thing to do is check your air filter and clean the MAP sensor in the intake. Can’t really go wrong with the Guzzi for what you paid for it…very easy maintenance for the do it yourself mechanic!

They make aftermarket aluminum side covers and fenders for the Guzzi so that would clean that up. A new tank would also be good...

I cant tell you enough how much These 3 motorcycles go hand in hand with each other, the only one missing is a W800, they are too expensive anyway. I own a RE and a Triumph and so want a Guzzi. When you pick one bike to sell, will you notify us, your viewers, first before you put it on FB or Kijiji, second will you consider giving your viewers a good deal?. I don't know as much about the MG as I do about the RE and the Triumph but what I do know about the MG is, I frigging want one :-). Some factors that play in to this, is the condition of these bikes, if these bikes were new and it was me, I have a feeling and I cant say this for sure but I think my choice would be the Guzzi. I like to ride a bit aggressively, I owned an 84 Ninja when it came out, I owned an 87 GSXR 1100, my first bikes were 2 strokes , Yamaha RD's and my favorite bike a Yamaha RZ500, my age is 59. I don't need 200 hp any more, 40 to 70 is good by me but I can say my RE GT 650 handles better than my 2013 Bonneville, I don't know this for sure but I'm pretty sure the Guzzi will handle better than the Bonneville and I suspect the fit and finish of the Guzzi better than the RE, so if the bikes were new the Guzzi will be the winner, That been said there is something I really really love about my Continental GT that I just really connect with. So many bikes, too little time, sucks to be me lololololol

It went from private owner to insurance company.
Insurance company to dealer only auction.
Auction company to used car dealer a few hours out of the GTA.
Used car dealer to a guy a couple hours outside of Toronto.
And from him on Kijiji to me.
