Hey kids, its your good buddy Uncle Ben back with Weekend Wankshop 266!!! If you're like many guitarists, you're comfortable soloing over Major and minor chords... but what do you do when a real curveball comes your way in the form of a minor 7 b5/half diminished chord?! Well, i've got the answer: its my signature Demonic Pentatonic scale shape!!!
This easy to use scale shape is based around an old classic with a twist; by taking the blues scale and removing the 5th intervals in it, you end up with a potent weapon to combat crazy weird jazzy chord while you improvise! Its even based around the ever-familiar two note per string minor pentatonic feel, so you're picking and fretting hands will feel right at home. No need to go super deep into modes or theory when you've got this easy scale shape at your disposal!
In this lesson, i'm going to show you this cool scale shape, and also give you some details about m7b5 chords and how they are formed! Its everything you need to get shredding on all those jazzy tunes in no time!
Playing my PRS SE Hollowbody Standard through the amazing Axe FX III. Loving this setup!!
What do you want to see next on Weekend Wankshop?! Let me know in the comments!

2:48 - My 12 year-old daughter cracked up when she saw that. And yes, someone did put sheet music in front of me once and said "This should stop your playing." I had six years of Classical piano as a kid so I just immediately played what I saw on the paper. (And she said "Dammit, that didn't work with him.")

  • @tonepoet

A few tips with this. If you use this altered blues scale over a dominant chord it heightens the bluesy feeling of it.
You can also use this scale one step below a dominant chord to give it a very out jazz sound. So, over an Am (or A half diminished) play the altered blues scale starting on 'A', and if you go to the 5 chord (D7) you can play the same exact lick starting on 'C'. This gives you the altered tones over the D7 as b7, b9, #9, 3, b13. It allows you to confidently repeat an idea over the ii, V progression with just a 3 fret slide up.

I have the same issue. I know some songs, but i know zero theory so i cant just play and hold my own. And i cant piece anything together to create my own music either. So this may be a dumb question. But how did you go about learning theory and stuff? Like did you watch uncle ben, or did you get some theory books or something?

    • @yonikup2865
      @yonikup2865 3 года назад

@@plack_benis382 never got any books, what I did was this, tried learning songs that use certain scales and modes to get each the iconic sound of each of them in my head to the point that I can identify them like seeing colors "oh thats lydian, oh thats phrygian". While you do that you also learn what notes make the certain scale sound the way it does , for example for mixolydian it's the flat 7 sound In the major scale or in dorian it's the major 6 in the minor scale.
Alot of the theory I learned from videos on youtube (I'll try and find some good ones I used back in the day and add a few in an edit later) but i believe the most important thing is to develop your ear to a point that you know what scale is used just by its characteristic sound.
Good luck, I hope this helped

Always informative, and the DP is fun indeed!
Remember kids, you can always play the chord's 3rd or 5th note's scale over it too. So D minor (Dorian) or F major (Lydian) are the 3 + 5 scales of BDFA (B m7 b5).
Just like playing Em (Phrygian) or G (Mixolydian) of the C major (Ionian) chord.
And of course you can always play any diatonic scale over any diatonic chord, but hitting tge right notes at the right times becomes more important; more flavor, but more risk; Like playing D dorian over C chord in C key. You don't want to 'fail resolve' to D while you should be resolving to C, E, or G of the C chord.
    /guidelines. Break as desired.

I wanted to split the Locrian in two pents and play like playing a mixolydian split. I was coming up with some interesting things but I haven't worked on it in a long while. Thanks. Great vid.

Hey Ben, will we see a TIWYSAG video for bending, and specifically bending with vibrato? 5 years ago you replied to a comment of mine saying there would be one for this topic, I've been quietly and patiently waiting. But we can wait no more, the Army of Bad Bending has been steadily becoming stronger, and I fear my willpower is no longer strong enough to resist these powerful, warbling squealcat forces. Only the mighty Uncle-Step-King Ben Eller can deliver the antidote at this point. Cheers man, whether you do it or not, you're easily the best guitar teacher on RUclips.

Excellent lesson. This is one of the Japanese modes (for those who didn't know). I've been using the Japanese scales since I was a kid in the 80's. For those interested there are a lot of pentatonic scales that are not the typical minor and Major "rock" and "country" scales (respectively).
Click *"Read more"* to learn another easy, but cool sounding pentatonic scale...
Not only jazz players use them, but also rock players like Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Steve Vai and more use them as well.
Here's one of my favorites that works great over a dominant7 chord (I call it the "Jeff Beck" scale). Take the minor pentatonic and and turn the minor third into a Major third. In A it would be: *A, C#, D, E, and G.*
Like the example Ben gives here, it just moves one note from the standard minor pentatonic, so it's really easy to learn.
Also along with the Japanese scale used in this video, explore the other Japanese scales. They all fit certain chords in very interesting ways.
Also, and I can't stress how many doors this opened for me when I discovered it (by learning this very same scale Ben teaches here), dropping the first finger back like he does on the B string @ 5:29 unlocked a ton of cool licks and fingerings for scales, arpeggios and string skipping licks.
I advise experimenting with that in a big way for anyone who is (like most guitarists) locked into using the first finger as a reference/anchor all of the time. That's fine to use the first finger as an anchor, but you can use other fingers as anchors too, but more importantly, freeing yourself from being "held down" by that anchor can be a revelation. It was for me.
Also @Ben : I'm glad you stopped using the title _"Why you suck at"_ etc. Because (and I mean this in a constructive way) that was why you sucked at teaching...
Telling your students they suck right off the bat may get you some students who as a default illogically believe they suck, but loses you most of the students who are logical thinkers, and know that they do not suck. Not only that, it turns people like me off; a fellow instructor who in fact knows at least as much as you. And if I suck then you suck too, and who wants to learn from someone who sucks? lols. I honestly never subscribed and silently boycotted watching your videos because of that.
The fact is, that no musician sucks (that's simply an opinion and doesn't actually even exist in any material sense). They're just not in the same place as others are. Remember people, the absolutely best way to diminish your ability to learn how to play better (or do anything better really), is by comparing yourself to other players who are in a different stage of the journey. It's not your fault if you do this, it's one of those societal bullshit ideas that brainwash us all. But this type of comparison is illogical at best.
In any case, good on ya Ben for getting past that mess. It takes a strong will to make such changes. I'll be sure to check out more of your videos soon now. And if you stay with this more logical course, I'm sure I'll end up subscribing too, because otherwise you're a very good teacher and I'm not so illogically prideful that I falsely believe I can't learn from my peers, or even those who are not as far along in their journey. ^-^

erm...pretty sure the "This is why you suck at guitar" title is meant to be taken as a joke or something. Or maybe it is just a way to capture attention so people will click the video? Very cool lesson Ben, and a nice new guitar too. I was going to donate a few guitars to you so you'd have a different one for every lesson! :-)
