This is great. My dad tried to teach me a few times when I was young and dumb. I didn’t give it the time of day. He passed away 4 years ago and left me his guitar. He was such an excellent singer and guitar player and taught himself how to play back in 1965. I want to honour his memory, but don’t have the same artistic capability to teach myself, so videos like this are excellent to show beginners like myself how to properly play. Can’t wait to improve and play for my mom. Thank you!

Like your comment. My folks bought me a Yairi when when I was eleven. Crashed and burned. Now finally sitting down starting to learn it at 65. Shame my folks never got the chance to hear me rip out a few decent chords. This guys teaching method is great
It took me thirty minutes, to get the correct finger positioning, and an hour to finally use the two melodies the way you did. 100 percent worth the patience thank you so much.
Started playing 7 months ago, a lot of times i felt like giving up, i had a switch from electric to acoustic and many things happened! After a little practice EVERY DAY i finally got “good” I can play many songs, I still have a long way to go, but i feel great about what I’ve accomplished, and if you’re a beginner reading this, I know the struggle, I really do, but work at it you will get better if you want and dedicate yourself to it! Carly Pelle a tip I have to you is, learn the basics (on youtube or something, I used Fender Play), and start playing some songs you like/want to play! This makes it a lot more “fun”!

Came back because today marks my 1 year of playing guitar. This was the first video I watched. As I’m thinking about it, what all I’ve picked up is amazing. And a solid 90% of what I know Marty taught me. If you’re just starting, or re-starting, stick with Marty
I have learned SO much from you over the last 9 months. I remember this video when I first started and thought WOW I can actually play something! Now 9 months later I have 3 guitars 2 of which are electric, 2 amps and a handful of effects pedals and I am rockin!!! Now I'm playing songs by AC-DC, Metallica, Bob Seger, even some Eric Clapton. I'm 54 years old and have MS and if I can do it, anybody can do it. Just stick with it! Thank you so much Marty!
I just wanna say that I picked up guitar 1.5 years ago and this video was the very first step of my journey. Looking back at this video brought back memories I forgot I had. Sometimes I feel that it is important to look back on the things you have accomplished so you can look forward to what you want to accomplish. Thank you so much for starting my journey!!
I am here for the exact same reason and almost the same timeline. Not saying that I’ve become a pro after 1.5 years of playing, but I sure remember nailing down these 2 chords) Really feels like a lot of time have passed.
I can relate, I am here for the same reason! I started about 14 months ago and remember watching this video for the very first time. I have invested so much time and effort into guitar since then. It’s nice walking down memory lane. Best of luck with your guitar journey!
61 year old man here and doing the same. Just bought an acoustic 2 weeks ago and was playing this in no time. I have been doing course 1 on Justin Guitar and trying to master the D & A chords and make smooth transitions. Some days pretty good, some days awful. This though seemed easy by comparison.
Did anyone else get an ad right before this saying RUclips guitar lessons don't work Omg I know no one will care but thank you for all the likes I've never gotten this much ❤️
About a year ago my friend dropped his pick in his guitar last week he fell asleep basically while playing and it fell out the next morning, moral of the story, give it a year
Been playing guitar for more than 10 years now but here I am watching this video. I can honestly say Marty is the reason I can play guitar today. I appreciate what you have done for so many people including myself! Great guy!
@ok boomer I would like to try and help you, what do you mean by not being able to play? No sound is coming out? You can't fret? The notes sound different? Respond and I'll respond back. I first watched this video only about half a year ago, but I feel like a master now, arranging my own simple fingerstyle cover.
@ok boomer I don't understand what you mean by the third note, what note are we even talking about here? If you're talking about the strings and frets I can help, you literally just put your fingers where Marty told you to and strum, if you mute a few strings that's fine, you'll eventually be able to adjust on your own. The only possible issue I think anyone would be having is they didn't tune the guitar properly because it doesn't sound the way it should even though you're pressing the right way.
I started right here day one...and completed the beginner acoustic and electric lessons...now I can play 150+ songs to memory all different genres and styles from power chords Barr chords soloing fingerpicking muting and percussive styles of playing...this guy is the only teacher you will ever need... thanks Marty Schwartz
I'm 24 and I've been playing for about 9 months now and all the videos I watched at the start were yours, I can now play several full songs with confidence. This man is amazing
@@michaelharris8613 just play and something will click eventually, i can't actually explain what it is, but you will know when it clicks for you. oh and also you can't be afraid of being bad at something because that's the first step in being good at something
Thanks Marty. Grandpa here. I just got back from the music store buying my grandson his 1st guitar and he is watching this lesson. You are going to be his teacher. Thanks for putting this stuff on here.
I’m 37 and just picked up my acoustic guitar I’ve owned for 12 years. I’ve been working on this for a week and love the way you teach... thanks a million!
Exactly the same here! Although the guitar I bought for £20 12 years ago was very poorly made, so my family clubbed together to buy me a new one for my birthday. Good luck to you all!
Marty, I'm 50yo. My brother passed away 12 years ago and left his guitar to me. I've had a psychological block to taking up the guitar but I've watched many of your tutorials and I think you're the guy who is going to get me past this block.
Michele King that’s incredible. Similar story to mine where my father had a stroke and he always played guitar so I wanted to take it up and play because he always wanted me to.
My biggest regret in life was not pursuing music after high school and you have helped me find my passion for music again! Great video! Thank you for the help!
Dude, I’m now 29, I’ve bought guitars so many times in the past and have never managed to play a single chord. I’ve played more in the last 15 minutes than i ever had before. I am so glad i came across your channel your instruction is so clear and it has boosted my confidence in the fact that I could actually do this! Thank you so much. Much appreciation and much love from Australia!
Yo good luck! Just started too! Best advice was 5 minutes a day. I used to hit the snooze in the morning, but now I get up early and practice Marty’s videos :)
Story of my life: I was bored during quarantine, so I started looking through old boxes and found 4 things: a bass guitar, an acoustic guitar, a pick, and a capo. Then, I thought this: “I’m gonna stay inside of my house for two weeks constantly, so why don’t I give a shot at learning?” After that, I looked on RUclips and found Marty Music. I got an ad at the beginning about A website called Guitar tricks. I wanted to get to the video so I skipped the ad and despite of what the guy said, RUclips was very helpful for me. I played my first song this morning. It was a song called Wonderwall by Oasis, and I was able to play it after a week of learning from Marty. I recommend him for beginner guitarists because for me it was easy to learn.
Who just mysteriously finds a guitar in their house? That's so weird, I always know what's in my house and other people are like "oh I found this in my closet!!!" Lol smh
At 35 years old and years of wanting to play guitar I have finally started my guitar journey.. have watched hours of videos already, I am totally hooked.
It’ll be like that when you first start, especially if you’re starting with a steel-string guitar. When I started my fingers would hurt for days after playing but after a week or two of consistent playing, I got used to it.
Marty, my son has introduced me to your lessons on RUclips. I am in my early 60's and you have made the learning process a pleasure and fun to learn. I've tried so many times before to no avail. Friends would say place your fingers here and now let's jam. I'm like, WHAT??? I don't even know what I'm supposed to do. You have made it enjoyable. 3-10 minutes a day is great. Unfortunately I'm not in a place to compensate you yet but I will check the like buttons on your pages as I progress. Please feel free to reply. Thank you. RG
The time has came for me to learn guitar, I have one that my friend gave me from years ago. We were supposed to be in a band by now but unfortunately he died last week. I can't get over him but I'm going to learn the hell out of this instrument in his memory. No pain, no gain. I'm so grateful this is free.
Hi Marty, I just want to say that this lesson helped me so much and I’m already on my way through your videos. I just wanted to say that I was talking to my mum about learning guitar and mentioned you. It happens that years ago she watched these videos too and learned from you, now I am. Thank you for being an amazing teacher for me and my family
This started me off during lockdown. In my very humble and respectful opinion,( which is no more valid that anyone elses) it's the yardstick by which first guitar lessons are measured. Using very simple terms, and demonstrations, it started me off when I was 60 years old. Just awesome.
I have tried several "beginner" RUclips videos, but I have learned the most from yours Marty. I have never played an instrument but have a free guitar sitting in my basement. I have been playing it and watching your videos every morning when I am making coffee for the last week. It has turned out to be a great relaxing way to start my days. Thank you.
Onto my third guitar and have just finished lesson 1 with Marty. I think this is the one Marty. 67 years old, just retired for the third time, and have finally pulled it out of the bucket list. Thanks mate
Just came across this video again and thought I would add a comment. Three years ago I bought a guitar and had no clue where to start, so like many beginners, I checked out RUclips for guitar lessons and came across Marty. He seemed like a nice friendly guy so my journey began right here. With his easy to follow instructions I started picking things up steadily but struggled at times like every new player, just moving from one simple chord to another seemed impossible, but practice makes perfect as they say. Marty taught me the basics of enjoying the challenge ahead and I thank him for that. If you are using this beginners video, you are no doubt in the same position I was three years ago, but I highly recommend you continue on your own journey with Marty. I have saved up and just this week bought myself a brand new Faith acoustic guitar as I am now playing my own music, still playing everyday and although some days I feel in a rut, I carry on. Of all the teachers I found, it was Marty that kept me going, so stick at it and this lovely man will have you playing before you know it. This video is just the beginning of a fantastic journey.
So here is a story for you. I am 52 years old and all my life I have told myself every reason possible why I couldn't learn and play guitar. Recently a relative died and as a member of the family I was invited to go along and help clear the house. In a store room at the back was a case, and inside the case was a guitar. Written on the guitar was the words 'Fender Stratocaster Made in America'. I decided that something so beautiful could not be thrown away so I asked if I could take it and brought it home. At first I thought it is bound to be ruined. It dates back to the 70s and is purple coloured so I started to look on youtube about how to clean it. It looked beautiful! After that I thought that I maybe might like to hear it and so I looked for other videos about how to tune it. I found your video which mentioned apps, and so I downloaded one onto my phone and tuned it. Then I found this video a week ago. I clumsily picked out the two chords but I did what you said and picked the guitar up every day and also started to play with moving my hand up and down the fret board. Gradually my left hand started to relax which made it more comfortable and I started to hit the finger placements without looking. Marty you have sold me on this thing and tomorrow I am taking on your next lesson. At the age of 52 I have decided to learn guitar and my first guitar is a Fender Stratocaster. Go figure. I wanted to thank you for making tuition accessible for me and feel free to dine out on the story if you find it amusing. I guess now I need an amp. Nothing too big, just something to plug this baby into to see how she is meant to sound. I will be checking out your gear vids for tips. Currently I found a VOX headphone plug that mimics something called an AC30. Through my headphones it sounds great but now I am wondering what an amp will do to it. I guess you have started me on a journey for which I thank you greatly. All the best. Aaron.
My dad bought a guitar 5 years ago and never touched it. I finally decided i dont want to sing in silence anymore and yesterday you taught me how to restring it, tune it, and play like 4 or 5 chords. Thats more than i ever imagined.
I'm a 13-year-old girl and I've always dreamed of having a guitar and playing one ever since I was 5-years-old. Now I'm finally getting a guitar for Christmas!!! I can't wait! Edit: Got my guitar! It's so hard to play though.. Edit 2: Thank you so much for the support guys! It really means a lot
On the 25th of December 2017 I watched this video right after I got my first acoustic guitar. It’s now the 6th of June 2018( my birthday ) and I just got my first electric guitar and I’ve come along way from then and I have you to thank for most of it. Thanks Marty LITERALLY couldn’t have done it without you.
Marty I've been playing guitar my whole life and I can honestly say I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now if it weren't for you. I've been watching your videos since 2010 (when you used to record in front of that red curtain!) and in that time youve helped me learn everything from beginner 4 chord songs to guitar solos that I still rock to this day. I really appreciate everything you've done and I just want to say thank you for being the best teacher on youtube
Hello Marty, I have never commented in all this time, I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of the heart. I used to play a bit in school, but stopped and I picked up a guitar this year at 45... It literally saved my life. And you dear Sir, have made this journey so awesome for me. I come watch a lesson from you, and it give me something to practice. I'm sure you have heard this same thing from millions of people. I also found your online store, Im gonna get some goodies for myself and as gifts for loved ones :)
I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now and Marty has been there every step of the way. From basic tutorials and techniques to iconic riffs, this man has been the best teacher I could ask for. Seeing this video made me realize how simple we all start, and how far you can come with dedication and practice. To all the beginners: DON'T GIVE UP. Trust this man with your guitar needs, and soon enough you'll be that guy in the music store you wish you could play like. Thank you Marty!
Marty, this is my first time trying to learn any instrument. I'm so excited to be starting this journey with you as my teacher! Thank you for these videos!
I'm 75 and bought my first guitar yesterday, electric. I instantly was overwhelmed until your first two lessons, tuning and then the first two chords. I'm going to get it turned today and try the first two chords. Thanks Marty.
You’re literally a life saver. I play clarinet, so this was totally weird for me to do, but you made it really easy to remember everything. Thanks dude!
This was insanely helpful. As someone who has never picked up a guitar before, I actually understand what you’re talking about and the directions given.
Here is a playlist of material that helped me learn to play. Its organized in sections with stuff that really were easy for me to understand and help me improve. ruclips.net/p/PLnMMOX2cjcy7j0gLX44DovCJjxVnhunyV * General Beginner things * Fun heavy and punk lessons * Finger Picking * The Blues and how to get started and advance on * Improvising, soloing and general licks * History of pioneering and legendary guitarist to help you build your style and inspire
Marty I want to thank you for what you do. I’m 37 yrs old and never thought I would be able to learn how to play acoustic and you have made it possible. Thank you so very much
Hi Joseph, I run an online music school and I was wondering if you would be interested in a free trial lesson with our guitar instructor Tim Basom, from the broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. Marty: It might hurt your fingers. You develop callouses over time. Me: *laughs hysterically in violin* Btw I just found your channel and instantly subscribed! I guess my brother's old guitar won't be collecting dust anymore :D
SAMEE, I just thought I had to learn grips and then I was good to go playing songs, turns out the grips isn't my biggest problem, its holding the strings down hard enough😩 IT DOES NOT SOUND GOOD😂
I remember watching this video a couple years back, I remember watching this video and just sobbing because I had given up. I had played violin, trumpet, then guitar. I had given up because my first every music lessons I was told I would never amount to anything and that I should just quit. I had the violin jabbed up into my chin to the point of choking i had my fingers bent way it shouldn’t be bent because my teacher was so angry at me for just not getting it. I recently watched an animation (metal family) and it brought back my inspiration to lessen guitar. So here I am giving it another shot, and this time I won’t quit :)
In 2014, I got a guitar for my 14 birthday, I went to some lessons and picked up a couple of chords, but for some reason I always though this was to hard, and that I was not made to play the guitar. Now is 2019 I decided to start a new hobby and I saw my guitar and I though to myself let me try again!, I came across your channel and it made it really easy for me to pick up the chords! I can barely remember what I had learn before, but today is DAY1 and I hope to keep practicing and improving my abilities through this videos!! THANK YOU.
After spending all quarantine thinking I could never do it, I'm finally giving it a go now I'm on summer holidays til October and then online study for the first semester. Really looking forward to going on this journey properly instead of just jumping in to play a few songs then abandoning the guitar for months. Thanks so much for all you do Marty, I've been a big fan for years!
Dusted my guitar off after years of frustration from 'learning' online previously.... However this vid had me switching chords easily and strumming with the pick and it sounds great. Great teacher!
Dude I have tried SO many times to try and learn guitar. My Dad was a gifted player, my Mom can play, my sister can play, and while I can hang somewhat with percussion, I've never come close to figuring out guitar. I can't even properly maneuver a plastic rock band guitar and instead play it on my lap, like Jeff Healey! My hands are small and weak, which makes it difficult to wrap it around the guitar head properly, and I've never been able to get the strumming rhythm. I don't know if I was channeling my Dad, but something just clicked tonight and I was able to just get these two chords, like I've owned them my entire life, with zero effort, thanks to your easy breakdown. Thank you SOOOOO much!!!
Perfect introduction. I've fooled around with a few different instruments in my youth and got "good" enough to create note by note melodies while hardly actually learning anything, and never bothered to really learn because I was impatient and more focused on my truest passion in music: singing. After years of using youtube copy right free instrumentals and relying on flakey band members that never really worked out to make music, I've decided to just learn to play the instruments myself starting with guitar so I can get to do what I love without being hindered. This has given two chords I can easily remember that are great for learning how to switch from chord to chord, and I already feel like I'm making progress!
27 year old music virgin here, literally got my new acoustic still wrapped by my feet, the journey begins I suppose, I'm too poor to pay for regular lessons, so I'm letting RUclips be my teacher 🤷🏻♂️😅
Because of the quarantine, I now have a harmonica, an acoustic guitar and a pork pie hat. I look good in the hat, and I am getting better with the harmonica, This guitar thing is going to take some work. Good thing I've got time.
I'll have you know that the song they played (future days) is actually a pretty simple one, it's like 4 chords only with some embellishments. Although, you might want to get used to hammer-ons and pull-offs technique.
@@kenz2756 Sorry if this sounds rude, I'm just,, curious what that has to do with this thread? I might be missing something glaringly obvious, sorry if that's the case

I remember watching this very video in late 2019 right before the pandemic started because i was bored and wanted to learn a new skill, and now i'm a guitarist in a metal band. I just wanted to come on here to thank you for starting my guitar journey and also my little brothers journey on the bass. And to anyone who's seeing this right now, guitar might seem intimidating. it might seem like "maybe i can learn a few songs in campfire chord form, but i'm never gonna be able to play anything even remottely like Dimebag, EVH, Hendrix ect" but i'm here to tell you that you can. If you don't take guitar too seriously like some folk who either don't know what they're talking about or just give really bad advice will tell you, you'll be playing some really impressive leads in no time. Just have fun with it.
I recommend Marty anytime someone is dabbling with starting to play guitar. I been playing 25 years but mostly by ear and know fuckall theory. I send them here when they ask me to teach them. Learn properly, and Marty’s lessons are by far the best and most comprehensive on the tube.

Story of my life:
I was bored during quarantine, so I started looking through old boxes and found 4 things: a bass guitar, an acoustic guitar, a pick, and a capo.
I really spit my coffee at "wonderwall by oasis" I don't know why that was so funny to me
Please, every time you meet someone and have your guitar with you, say “anyway, here’s Wonderwall” and start playing it

Aaron.
Well? Update please.

I go to guitar classes but my teacher didn’t teach the basic and just jump a huge leap. But u my friend, u thought me some good stuff
Good job mate

@@kenz2756 Sorry if this sounds rude, I'm just,, curious what that has to do with this thread? I might be missing something glaringly obvious, sorry if that's the case
@@cadenced3351 I just assumed you guys are going to learn Joel's song, it's called future days, how would you not want to play that after playing the game?
this is amazing! ive been trying to learn the guitar for a year but I gave up, and recently picked it back up again. I used to just start off by learning songs and not the basics, and this already has me sounding ten times better. I definitely recommend any beginners looking to start playing the guitar. Thanks Marty! 🤝
I just wanted to say that earlier I put my guitar down because I was frustrated with how it sounds and I know I can do better than that but I’ve never even been through a lesson and I’m the first 2 minutes you have made me feel so motivated I’m committed 👏🏾 I know this guitar will change my life and I have to learn what I’m doing I appreciate you putting these lessons online for people like me to find ❤️

Marty just wanna say I’ve been following your acoustic lessons for a bit now and I just made up a little 30 second song using all the chords you taught me. I am blown away by how much I’ve loved playing guitar and the chords you teach build so well on each other. Thank you from Chicago!
I just started playing guitar and was struggling with the basics but some of his little tips made a big difference for me

Later in the ad: here’s our RUclips videos on learning beginner guitar 🤣
ikr'
It’s crazy to see how far we’ve all came from beginning to learn, thank you Marty.
I'm tired of restarting. I've tried the rest.
Now I'm prepared for the best.
