51-yr old here and on the cusp of trying to pick up the guitar. Never really been musically inclined, but find myself with more time on my hands (divorced, kid just went to college...). Looked at guitars this weekend and lessons such as this (just watched 1 and 2) really encourage me and make me optimistic. Love the approach and I'm over here like, "I can totally do this!" and I don't even have a guitar (yet). So many things out there...websites, YT videos, apps, private lessons.....Marty seems to really get it! To be continued....
You have a great way of motivating beginners and reminding them to take it easy on themselves, and give it time. Most things seem really hard at first until you practice and give it all time to sink in.
pratice , practice, practiceI. I have ulnar nerve damage in my fretting hand. My Dr. said that playing is good therapy. So for now I'm fretting with middle ring and pinky fingers. Thanks Marty
I started guitar lessons at 61 from an individual for about 12 lessons but did not get excited about playing and gave up until your first video and now I can't put it down even after dislocating my ring finger on the cord hand. 3 days after a bad dislocation from a football I was practicing and loving it thank you so much for inspiring me to get back into it👍

This is amazing! I'm 57 and received my dads guitar when he passed away a few months ago. I've decided to learn how to play. I've listened to several other instructors online, but you make it so easy and fun. I've only been playing for 3 days for an hour a day and I'm already keeping up. I need work with the fancy strumming, but I know that will come in time. Thank you so much! Cathleen
I'm 71 years old and have wanted to learn the guitar for ages. 40 years ago I played bass (Fender Precision) in a country rock band, which would have been the perfect time for free guitar lessons! But I never did it. Now, we are coming up on the rainy season in the Pacific Northwest and there's that Covid thing going on as well, so I thought I'm gonna do it. I bought a Yahama FG800, recommended by a guitar collector friend, and I've learned 3 chords from your videos. It's hard to make my fingers do what they're supposed to do, but I'm gonna keep at it. Love your videos!
I had a guitar since I was 5 and I always kept trying to learn how to play using the book but I couldn’t. I gave up on it and forgot I ever had one I found it and tried using the book again but I struggled again. Then I found your videos and they’ve really helped me out.
Just barely got my grandpa’s guitar and wanted to learn how to play it. I’m on my second day and so far it’s going great! Thank you for making these :)
Man I gotta tell you I have paid for stupid apps and I really have always wanted to play guitar and teach my daughter as she is 3 and loves her guitar . as a father you wanna be a role model and teach them the right way to do things . I have struggle learning it though I just started and know nothing . Just off the first lesson you did I practiced everyday for 20mins wether after work or what not I just make time even if it’s for 5 minutes. I got lesson 1 down good I know that’s probably easy for most but it’s very intimidating and it feels good to accomplish that . I have learned a lot from you in 15mins then I have paying 100$ a month for apps and everything else so I just wanna say thank you . Your really helping people out here or least you helped me and I can’t tell you enough how your time is appreciated showing us thank you .
I saw you in the comments of episode one! How is your learning going? I have one goal as of right now which is to learn Post Malone's 'Go Flex' on guitar before I see him in concert on May 4, 2019. I've only been going for 1 day but I'm enjoying it so far!
wait when does he say that?! But that is true. Many people quit guitar because of the stress and frustration they get when watching RUclips videos about how to play the guitar.
Thank you Marty Music! I've been quarantined by my company for the next 3 weeks (I'm not sick someone else is) so I stopped by a pawn shop and found an acoustic guitar for $23 bucks and came home tuned it and it sounds great! Its a good beginner guitar (it's a Samich Greg Bennett design) because I've maybe held a guitar for 10 minutes in my previous 43 years. Thank you for making this easy to follow and for speaking in a language I hear. Can't wait to see where this goes!
I have been trying to learn how to play the guitar for over 20 years but have never received the "reward" of feeling like it sounded good until finding your lessons!! Thank you so much!! On to lesson 3!!!
One thing to keep in mind is that the farther back a finger is, the harder you have to press to prevent the buzzing. So unless you somehow got your fingers in a perfect vertical line (probably not possible), you'll always have to press harder with the top finger.
I've gotta tell ya that I tried your lessons last year or maybe longer and I couldn't get my fingers to hit any chords. I did lessons 1&2 and I'm already strum. I even got lesson 3 down without even listening to the tutorial. I'm super excited because I only practiced about an hour each time.... You're the guy to go to if you wanna learn. Thanks Marty!!!!
Picking up guitar for the first time in a while. Glad these lessons exist, because this is probably the furthest I've gotten in any of my lessons I've taken, even the ones with "professionals" that I took for a year, I was still more behind than this. Thank you so much Marty!
I’m 28, I could never realy afford lessons and I never understood when trying to learn from a book, I would pick up a guitar so many times through life and give up a few days in. But not with the power of RUclips I feel like I can REALY pick it up without getting horribly confused. And your videos specifically make it easy to follow along and understand
My dad was self taught and had his band in the early 60's called the "Coachmen". Love how Marty teaches. Just starting and have to say its not easy but Marty does make it very simple to learn once you get past that hump. Keep it up man!!!
My fingers and hands are so thick and big that they always touch other strings and it is so demotivating but I will keep practicing the first lesson again and again!!
Practice makes perfect, I finally got the right sound for two strums, adjusted my seating, went to strum again and just heard that annoying “thunk” sound, this is gonna be a fun day
I bought my daughter a guitar for her school lessons. Thought I'd have a quick go and looked up "first guitar lesson" on the Tubes. Clicked on this dude's video. Now I'M learning how to play. 38 years and I finally made a guitar do something other than screech and whine like a dying animal. Cheers!
Marty, I've been meaning to learn how to play guitar for so long. I bought my first guitar when my son was in elementary school, and he's 23 now. Then, a couple of years ago, I gave my guitar away to my niece because she wanted to learn guitar. So I bought another guitar, a black one because it looked so pretty and I already had the hook to hang it on my wall. At that point my poor guitar was just part of the decor. I watch your lesson 1 a couple of days ago, and have been practicing since. I think I'm finally getting it!! Thank you so much!!
Marty I'm a 55yr old, always wanted to try guitar, doubted I could do it but I'm on lesson 2 after giving myself a week of getting comfy with the first lesson. Really enjoying it, but without you it wouldn't be possible for me Thank you so much, you are a star. ✨ Big hugs xx
I'm a returning guitarist. Previously I was 100% self taught and was decent enough to be able to play a few shows with a cover band. I wanted to come back and learn the "correct" way to play guitar. It fascinates me how you can think you know so much but can still learn from reviewing the basics. Great videos. Thank you.
hi. I live in northern Ireland, and am stuck at home due to the Corana virus, so at 51 started to learn the acoustic, I find your lessons great, and structure is easier than a few others I've tried I seen your video about the guitar buddy and will invest in one of these and use it to get patterns down as well as practicing my chords, I only wish I'd seen your video on choosing my guitar first, as my action is very high and needs lots of pressure, so when I can get out I'm looking at getting this lowered so thank you for keeping me same and stay safe bud
I literally cannot fit my fingers in that fret without my index being at completely the wrong side. I think as I build more rough skin they will become more pointier or something I hope...
try over lapping them not just side by side. have the upper finger slightly on top of the finger below. i work construction and have hard fat fingers from years of hard labor and i have difficulty doing it too - but it is possible with a bit of work...
I noticed that too, but I also noticed that Marty himself seems to not mind that in the video, where his index finger is pretty much right at the top of the fret.
You awesome, fun, enjoyable and honest approach is making this experience so much easier :) I've lost track in time just replaying the video and just finding it so good every time. Thank you very sencerly and I hope to be somewhere close to your standard one day. Wish you all the best and keep making these amazing and inspiring videos man. Thank you ✌
I've always wanted to learn to play on a guitar. I made the sudden decision to buy 1 a few days ago, when i got it i took my time and spended almost 1hour to tune my guitar. Seeing this made it all worth it, i never taught i'd play something that sounds like music in just 2 days. Im so freakin' hyped now! 🤣 Thank you, Marty! Thanks for the amazing guitar lessons.

Thank you Marty. I'm 44yrs and have always wanted to play guitar. I write Americana Rock/Country songs. But I never learned guitar. You made it so easy to quickly learn with zero pressure. Very comfortable to learn from you and not be pressured. I will progress with your videos. Thank you
I love this guy, just his approach to teaching is great and I just have so much sitting down and practicing because after I always feel like I have made some progress. Just five minutes everyday is what he said but I can't help but sit down for longer
I’ve tried playing the guitar a long time ago when I was younger and I got more frustrated and I thought there was either something wrong with me or the guitar I had. But now I am older and I understand things more. You’re the teacher I have always wanted and I believe watching your lesson videos has made everything more fun and better for me. Even though my fingers hurt in the very end 😁👍
Thanks for the support! Glad my teaching works for you!
Dude I was getting so frustrated the first three days but on the fourth I really started to enjoy playing the guitar. Thanks to you ! I love how you engage your audience. & your videos are also so entertaining. Thanks again
It's been a dream of mine for my Dad and I to play guitar together. I'm really hoping that by the time I get married next year I can master to play "Beautiful Crazy" by Luke Combs and sing it to my bride to be. Thanks for the lesson, Ill be tuning in to the next one. You rock!
Arren Schroyer: I love that song! Congrats on the marriage and good luck. 😊
Did you do it and if so how did it go?? :)
Picked guitar back up abt a month ago, haven't played for about 4 years. These videos really help bringing stuff back to me. Definitely the best lessons on the internet by far.
I'm a 32 year old nurse. Can't sing, can't play any instruments but I've always wanted to learn to pay guitar. Once about 16 years ago I tried to play Swing Life Away using your video and got so discouraged because I was young and dumb and thought I should be getting it right away.
Fast forward to today. I've been learning with that same Swing Life Away video I watched when I was 16 and using these absolutely wonderful lessons! You are helping me to be able to play a song, with no history of playing music, as a surprise for my wife for our 10 year anniversary in September. Thank you so much Marty ❤❤️
I Just got a guitar for christmas! really enjoying these lessons thus far, Thanks MARTY!!
Hope you had a merry christmas and a happy new year into 2020
Caitlin O'Brien thank youu. Same to you 💛
@@sunraae550 :)
I recently started watching these videos and started playing on my own guitar and my family says that it's getting better, I am rlly thankful for these videos.
It makes playing so much fun now
Just started playing. You are the best teacher I've seen on here.
My Dr. said
that playing is good therapy. So for now I'm fretting with middle ring and pinky fingers. Thanks Marty
I started guitar lessons at 61 from an individual for about 12 lessons but did not get excited about playing and gave up until your first video and now I can't put it down even after dislocating my ring finger on the cord hand. 3 days after a bad dislocation from a football I was practicing and loving it thank you so much for inspiring me to get back into it👍
literally my favorite teacher ever. anytime i forget anything i always find my way back here ❤️. thank u for spreading ur talent to others in the world.
So beautiful that you teach slowly it's an important thing for begginers to not be demotivated thanks a lot 💜
Pumped you’re new to the journey! Thanks for the support and keep practicing
Thanks Marty a new beginner at age 72 from the UK had my guitar only 24 hours found the first two videos really helpful.
Oww, my fingies hurt. But I’m trying to get them calloused faster so I won’t stop
wait so you are telling me that 4,254,000 people gave up on learning guitar since episode 1?
I saw you in the comments of episode one! How is your learning going? I have one goal as of right now which is to learn Post Malone's 'Go Flex' on guitar before I see him in concert on May 4, 2019. I've only been going for 1 day but I'm enjoying it so far!
yep
wait when does he say that?! But that is true. Many people quit guitar because of the stress and frustration they get when watching RUclips videos about how to play the guitar.
Yes
We are in elite company if we made it to here
15 YEARS I can finally play 2 chords. my Mind is f**** blown . I had bad ADD as a child and couldn't learn anything but this dude is a great teacher.
Dear Mr. Marty Music, you have helped me grow so much in music and I have nobody else to thank but you
For anyone new to music:
Congratulations on starting your music exploration, great job!
Keep going, a little bit each day.
You’ve got this!!
I got an ad for “Piano Lessons Near Me”
It was a boy playing a violin
🤔
Edit: also on a video about guitars
hehe
Julia Keeney lol
On a video about guitars...
"Sausage fingers" LOL I feel ya Marty
"If ur fingers aren't bleeding by the end of the session, u ain't doing it right son..."
My guitar teacher from 20 years ago
LMFAO
Lmao kinda scary ngl
That's how I learned about lotion when I was 10. Ah to be a kid again.
today is my second day learning guitar, thanks marty.
This is for me the hardest chord since u gotta squeeze all 3 fingers into the 2nd fret smh
I cant get this one right it always viberates I tried everything
@@wayancrum5874 bend them! Bend them!
@@matthewtrevino9956 welp, one month later I know all of the chords and can do them just fine, all because of Marty
@@wayancrum5874 wow how did u learn a major if u dont mind me asking did it just get easier?
My fingers have indents 😂
Isaac Smith same! From just lesson 1&2
I got one more in me today 😅
Isaac Smith same
...and then my fingers become numb from the pressure.
Omggg lol mines hurt from just number 1... when I tried number 2 I couldn’t even press on the strings ouchhhh is all I can say...
Isaac Smith dame 😂
anyone else doing this because your'e bored and stuck in quarantine
Quarantine guitarist here!
Here !!
Yah
Exactly!!😂😂
no
My favourite bit about this series is that he’s a pink Floyd fan🙏
I’m 28, I could never realy afford lessons and I never understood when trying to learn from a book, I would pick up a guitar so many times through life and give up a few days in. But not with the power of RUclips I feel like I can REALY pick it up without getting horribly confused. And your videos specifically make it easy to follow along and understand
My dad was self taught and had his band in the early 60's called the "Coachmen". Love how Marty teaches. Just starting and have to say its not easy but Marty does make it very simple to learn once you get past that hump. Keep it up man!!!
Thank you again Marty McFly.
My fingers and hands are so thick and big that they always touch other strings and it is so demotivating but I will keep practicing the first lesson again and again!!
You got this dude!
im having the same issue
my A Major Chord isn't coming out correct :/
got the same issue im A mechanic so ive got fat fingers and they're pretty short as well but it'll get better over time
Practice makes perfect, I finally got the right sound for two strums, adjusted my seating, went to strum again and just heard that annoying “thunk” sound, this is gonna be a fun day
Me - "It hurts". My fingers - "Hold our beer".
Where do we buy the freeze spray ? Marty if that's even your real name
woah dude.... relax
Exclusively at Costco
the black market
Who cares if it's his real name, but what the heck is muscle freeze spray?
Corona virus out here makin me want to learn guitar.
Love the channel. I'm starting from scratch with you. Any tips on avoiding the top sting while strumming?
It is recommended that you use a pick, but to avoid that e string barehanded I strum the other 5 strings with my thumb.
Jim K you probably learned it already but I mute the E string (and A string with D chords) with my left tumb over the neck
Marty I'm a 55yr old, always wanted to try guitar, doubted I could do it but
I'm on lesson 2 after giving myself a week of getting comfy with the first lesson.
Really enjoying it, but without you it wouldn't be possible for me
Thank you so much, you are a star. ✨
Big hugs xx
I'm a returning guitarist. Previously I was 100% self taught and was decent enough to be able to play a few shows with a cover band. I wanted to come back and learn the "correct" way to play guitar. It fascinates me how you can think you know so much but can still learn from reviewing the basics. Great videos. Thank you.
Dude! How did you know that's where I came from! lol
Does anyone’s forearm feel sore after lol
yup
Of course
Ya
You’ll get used to it with practice
no, just all my left fingers lol
Thanks my wife says my piddling around with guitar starting to sound like music 🤪 u got me subbed
Thanks!
hi. I live in northern Ireland, and am stuck at home due to the Corana virus, so at 51 started to learn the acoustic, I find your lessons great, and structure is easier than a few others I've tried
I seen your video about the guitar buddy and will invest in one of these and use it to get patterns down as well as practicing my chords, I only wish I'd seen your video on choosing my guitar first, as my action is very high and needs lots of pressure, so when I can get out I'm looking at getting this lowered
so thank you for keeping me same and stay safe bud
I literally cannot fit my fingers in that fret without my index being at completely the wrong side. I think as I build more rough skin they will become more pointier or something I hope...
ap2pat i have the same problem as you
try over lapping them not just side by side. have the upper finger slightly on top of the finger below. i work construction and have hard fat fingers from years of hard labor and i have difficulty doing it too - but it is possible with a bit of work...
I noticed that too, but I also noticed that Marty himself seems to not mind that in the video, where his index finger is pretty much right at the top of the fret.
It can also help to put your index finger in the middle, between your other 2 fingers, instead of them all in a row...
@@ifensler HOMIE!!!!
Thank you ✌
Hey Buddy,
I need your help on how shuffle in between cords!
Thanks Mike S
I've always wanted to learn to play on a guitar. I made the sudden decision to buy 1 a few days ago, when i got it i took my time and spended almost 1hour to tune my guitar. Seeing this made it all worth it, i never taught i'd play something that sounds like music in just 2 days. Im so freakin' hyped now! 🤣
Thank you, Marty! Thanks for the amazing guitar lessons.
These lessons are so perfect because you really take your time and explain the notes and give me time to practice it and switch around from note to note. Actual teachers want to move so fast because there’s only like an hour and it’s really expensive but I need to take time
