This is awesome. I'm a beginner+ lol. I have a problem where every time I try to practice guitar I end up into the same strumming pattern and everything sounds the same. I keep trying to do different ones but I just keep falling back into that same silly pattern. Thank you!
You might try listening to the song at the same time I’ve noticed that when I just look at a songs strum pattern I get mixed up in the specifics but if I listen to the song while playing I automatically start playing the correct one, you’ll have to do if a lot in order to get the pattern perfect
I’m a beginner and I’m realizing practice practice practice …I really love your beginner tutorial videos …you make it look easy . Im day 5 of learning guitar and strumming seems to help with few cords I know . I want to learn and the love is there …I want to advance quickly but realize one step at a time finger knowledge with the strumming smoothly . Hopefully I will get there 😊
Wow...just bought my first guitar for 200 kr a month ago, With the help of your channel i can now play Riptide. So proud of myself now. The strumming really helped. Tusen takk🤩🤩
Good Day Marty. at the age of 37 I decided to start playing guitar. i am left handed, but playing "right" Your videos makes it so easy and I feel that because i am left handed, my cord pressing comes easy for me. Thank you for all these awesome great excellent beginner video. I can play these beginner A, E, C, D, G cords endlessly for hours messing around with the strumming patter. I love it. Since I cant read music, all I read in my mind is up down up up down up up up up down down down up up .......in your voice
Good day I’m starting at 40. I’m not left handed but due to an accident lost tip of my finger. So I’m strumming with left hand. This videos are very helpful thank you Marty
Thank you Marty! You have helped me learn how to play the guitar and in about a year and a half I am now playing at church and putting music to my own original songs! I am still learning of course but am so excited to have come this far already! The way I am learning now is by learning new songs. That way I learn new chords and progressions. I do still struggle with what type of strumming patterns to use(or picking) patterns to use so any help with these things is very appreciated. Thanks again and God bless you!
Just picked up my 1st guitar for my 40th birthday, and your videos have made me change my mind about having no musical talent lol. Two weeks in and I almost have Blackbird down. Heading now to your other site to support you better.
Taking my first dive into acoustic guitar in a few weeks, never played before. Watched a couple of your vids and has helped me decide to take the leap! I'm a bit daunted by the chords and I can't read music on a sheet to save my life but baby steps! Thanks for doing these videos dude. Subscribed 👍
Love that 16th note strum at 13:41. You may wish to do a lesson on the same type of 16th rhythm strum Gordon Lightfoot plays live and taped by the BBC in 1971. I know you're always looking for great lesson material and your acoustic teachings are the best. Clearskys has the video up on RUclips and the time code is 30:49. I tried to get it but my wrist gave out. And Gordon is playing a 12 String!
Thank you Marty! Can I tell you I am concerned that I have no rhythm? I have do have some rhythm obviously. Is it possible that you can get rhythm by practicing? I am worried that I will practice and practice with not much change. I play daily amid my busy adult life and I truly look forward to playing my guitar too, so that helps. I have learned so much from you and I truly enjoy playing what you've taught me so far.
Hi Marty! Thanks for teaching us! I have a hard time understanding how the #3 works! Could you explain more and maybe change the camera angle to show how you do it?
What They don’t tell you is it it takes 100 times to practice this to get it down a little. But it takes thousands of times of practice to get it down effortlessly and be able to sing along with it 🤣 i’m in year three and it will probably take me five more years before I could play much effortlessly Edit: no I don’t practice for hours a day LOL just a fun side hobby
Heheeheheheh! Thanks Marty! :) ⭐️⭐️✨⭐️⭐️ Seriously what keeps me going❣️ See Nenad Bach with the Ping Pong variation of "If I Had Another Life." This is as good as Ping pong, but I'll try it all! Just thinking of it in my head while I try to do my signature makes a big difference, instantly. 💥😃❤️
I've been playing for close to a year at this point, and my guiter teach would always say that I can't stop while strumming, and that my arm has to be constantly moving up or down. During the 4th pattern before going to the 3 up strokes in a row, you are pausing, but if I had to play this strum for him, I would have to up stroke, down stroke without actually playing anything, before starting the 3 up strokes. I'm a bit confused now, and I would be nice to great some clarification on which approach is "better".
Dont get too caught up with the theory . Do it Marty way if it works for you . I know what your saying about your tutor's way I tried that and I could Just not do it . Horses for Courses Bro . Just Keep Playing its supposed to be Fun .
Only thing I didn’t like was the was no visual diagrams like in your older videos and I know I can write it down and then do it and it’s petty gripe for sure because the entire video was great 👍
hi brillant video but not sure about where to put my fingers on the chord and if you could show it so i get the hang of it it would be brill . keep up the lessons your amazing x
You need to learn chords first. Do not worry with trying to play songs. After you have chord shapes down and can change chords cleanly and quickly. Then learn to strum. Start by strumming once on beat one of each measure or barre..in a song. important to know where beat one is.. when you can strum correctly on the first beat of each measure for an entire song cleanly. then learn to Strum once on beat 2 of each measure of a song. Then just the 3rd beat, then just the 4th beat if the song is in 4/4 time. After accomplishing that. Strum once on each beat for the entire song. This would be quarter notes. And listen to what's going on in between each beat.. that's the way to find your eighth notes.( up strums ).. and this will have you feeling and understanding rythum. Learning to play guitar will not ever happen overnight for anyone. Get a good practice plan in place. And practice every day for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time. Any longer and your actual learning/ memory will diminish. Most of all don't get frustrated and just know your gonna get to where you want to be with guitar in due time.. it'll take 3 good years just to be a campfire strummer. Not a technical player with smooth lead lines and riffs.. just singing along to what your strumming.
I've learned a lot watching your channel! Thank you! I don't know if you normally see or read comments old, but could you possibly do a video for The Tide Is Turning by Roger Waters? I've searched and searched and can't seem to find any reliable tutorials for this song. There's a little solo/lead lick that's played throughout the song that I cannot find any kind of tabs for. I figure if anyone could figure it out, you'd be the guy! Plus it's just such a beautiful song and I would love to be able to learn it!
Thanks Marty my brother is a beginner and this really helped him. Plz can you recommend a RUclips to teach me november rain by guns and roses since they won't let you teach there songs😡
I have difficulty with fast strumming. I have realized I am holding my pick wrong. I hold it with 3 fingers like a pencil, not the suggested fingers. Can that cause issues?
Hey Marty, I’ve been trying to learn mom and dad by Patrick Sweany by ear for the last little bit and cannot quite figure it out. Figured if anyone could put a lesson out on it it’d be you🤙🤙
I cannot chuck for the life of me. I’ve played for a while and I’d definitely say I’m a little more advanced than a true beginner, but I can’t manage to figure out chucking

Rhyme is most important & underrated !
Marty, need to discuss when to use what strumming pattern, is there a way to tell what would be best for a certain song?
Hey Marty, thank you for the beginner strumming patterns guitar lesson. You can never get enough strumming patterns under your belt ;-).
I’m trying (sort of) to get back into playing guitar and this is great for running around the bases so to speak
Such great info, strumming and singing is what we are working on. Will use some of these patterns for sure 🎶🎸

At the beginning I almost thought you were playing “Painted Ladies” by Ian Thomas.
Most excellent.

Great video as always! Any chance you could do a video on how to do the guitar solo to Mumford & Sons - Believe?
This incredible sound at 2.00: ruclips.net/video/AcvIAP-FZkg/видео.html
Could you do I'd love to change the world by ten years after
The "chuck" sound, is this only achieved using a pick?
Only thing I didn’t like was the was no visual diagrams like in your older videos and I know I can write it down and then do it and it’s petty gripe for sure because the entire video was great 👍

I have difficulty with fast strumming. I have realized I am holding my pick wrong. I hold it with 3 fingers like a pencil, not the suggested fingers. Can that cause issues?
is pattern 4 still 4/4? it counts like 1 and 2 and and and 3 and 4 and.
Hey Marty, I’ve been trying to learn mom and dad by Patrick Sweany by ear for the last little bit and cannot quite figure it out. Figured if anyone could put a lesson out on it it’d be you🤙🤙
I hear Venus by Shocking Blue in pattern 3
Can we please get a Wicked Game by Chris Isaak lesson?
✌🏼
I fou d using the pick is really hard and feel uncomfortable and unnatural. Any reasons why I should use it?
Using a pick will give the guitar a more crisp sound. It will also give the sound more volume
Hello fam!
I cannot chuck for the life of me. I’ve played for a while and I’d definitely say I’m a little more advanced than a true beginner, but I can’t manage to figure out chucking

Really? No “1and2and3and4” strumming. “Just down up down up down up” instead? Disappointing.
