I rely on electric tuners. I need to get better at tuning by ear. It's embarrassing to pick up a guitar and not be able to quickly tune it.... and those high E strings break so easily if you go a little too far!
A tip would be to press the 5th fret on the first string. Whatever that sounds like, you need to tune the second string to sound just like that. Do this for the next 2 strings but after you tune 3 strings, for tuning the 5th string, instead of pressing the 5th fret on the 4th string, you press the 4th. Hope you understood that, it's difficult to explain ^^'

I am planning to by a Ukelele, for his 79th birthday this December.Just to get him started again with something easier.
Hi, watching this after being a session musician for many years ..more recently (2022) im goin back to the Kaola Beamer tuning. Cant do it myself but its utterly pure & beautiful . The way i understand it is that you start with a standard tuning. Then you 'out-tune ' it. By that i mean say, take G, then you have to tune the guitar to G all the way thru each string/up the guitar. So, you then have a very loose sound. It does restrict how much you can work it but it gives yiu a freedom ...
I’m sure you would get a good laugh at my partner and me trying to tune a new cheap guitar. He played lead jazz alto for Sinatra and Junior, plus anyone who has performed in Las Vegas (Streisand, as an example). In my 55 year career as a violinist/violist, I have played in show bands here in Vegas and Hawaii, which is simply to say that I know my way around the instrument. We met our match yesterday! We both had our tuners out, trying to find Eddy! I am trying to rehabilitate my hands by playing guitar. There is no doubt in my mind that this video is very helpful. Of course, new strings stretch rapidly, so that the E we tried so hard to find had become a C (or lower) by the time we got back to it. I’m letting it sit and stretch overnight, mainly so I don’t send it to a splintery demise. Thank you for your video.
Day 1 of learning how to play acoustic guitar and tuning my guitar was an adventure lol I used an app like you suggested and I think I finally got it its amazing how sensitive the strings are. Thx for the videos!
Literally found a guitar in the trash in my art room with a broken neck/head area, glued it back together, and replaced damaged strings. Sounds great now, thanks.
thank you so much for making this so easy to understand! my biggest fear was that i would pop a string but the app and you helped me to tune this guitar perfectly!
Man, i have been watching some of your vids, the tutorial ones, and i had this ugly feeling that i was doing something wrong and could not shake it off, i was getting super demotivated, but then my dumb ass thought, jeez maybe my damn guitar is out of tune??? Guess what... -.- It was COMPLETELY out of tune. Now everything sounds the way it should, thank you Marty, literally a genius at teaching guitar.
Found my dads old electric guitar so I tried tuning it ...but I’m reading the comments and a lot of people are saying the strings literally snap off when they’re tuning so now I’m scared because idk wtf I’m doing
I started playing before tuners. It took a while but I learned to tune the strings to the same note on different strings. It might be specific to individual guitars but it worked. Especially across multiple strings.
LOL i came from another one of your videos on a song tutorial, realized my guitar was out of tune, then looked up how to tune and came up. You've got me covered on all fronts, man!
Thank you for simple explanation, you give me encouragement to try learning guitar again! Tuning has always been an obstacle for me, I will give it another go and look for a guitar friend! Great tips, nicely presented. Wish me luck :)
Hi just bought a Music alley MA-34N classical acoustic guitar never played guitar b4 retired early at 50 due to ill health now 54 Successfully tuned in took me a while but did it been watching utube alot so I'm going to try n self teach myself
thought i matched the tune of my guitar up well to each of his guitar strings. he played his cord and it sounded beautiful... so i tried it too, and it’s more out of tune than where i started 😂
When I was taking lessons as a kid, I had to blow an E on a pitch pipe, then hold down the 5th fret on the E to find the A for the next string, then 5th fret on A to find the D and etc. Works for every string except use the 4th fret on the G to find the B.

Best guitar teacher on RUclips. You're awesome Marty, I wouldn't know what to do if you weren't here!
This video helped me a lot on how to learn to play guitar
Thanks for the lesson. Really appreciated the help to learn how to tune my guitar
DarcyKnox21 can you tell me which app you downloaded. Please.
The friend who guides you along in playing guitar is a called a professional teacher...!
1st step, get a tuner... GREAT! THANK YOU!
First timer here! I was able to tune my first guitar with this video!!!
Awesome - I've learning for a few months .. and literally. just learned how to properly tune a guitar. Thank you!
Talent show Judge: “Okay Marty, please play your solo”
Marty: 0:00 (the “ahhh” is how he was like ends it”)
Man, i have been watching some of your vids, the tutorial ones, and i had this ugly feeling that i was doing something wrong and could not shake it off, i was getting super demotivated, but then my dumb ass thought, jeez maybe my damn guitar is out of tune???
Guess what... -.-
It was COMPLETELY out of tune.
Lol my dad had a guitar and the two of them were snapped the guitar was soo dusty I tried it the noise was it just did not sound like a guitar 😅😂😂
Thanks man, as a beginner it really helped set me on track.
The best intro EVER!!!!!
They have the right audience but Marty Shwartz is very good online
I bought a guitar just now and first thing i learned is to tune the guitsr it seems easy through an tuner app
*someday you’ll find this comment*
Holy shit
Damn
I did
Nuh uh
Found it
When I was taking lessons as a kid, I had to blow an E on a pitch pipe, then hold down the 5th fret on the E to find the A for the next string, then 5th fret on A to find the D and etc. Works for every string except use the 4th fret on the G to find the B.
Dude - you rock! I'm just starting out and this is exactly what I need - something very simple to follow. Can't wait to see your other videos - thx
