I remember staying in D1 for about three weeks and every few days I'd have people ask me where I was from and if I needed a ride. I always politely declined and told them I would walk to my destination (which I normally did) a good rule of thumb for me is if a stranger starts asking you questions about where your from and what you'd like to see they are setting up a "sale."
Yeah allot of taxi driver here do that, but this guy was smooth. At first it looked like he had nothing to do and I supposed he was just excited to meet a foreigner and wanted to show me around. Normally I would know better, but I did kind of fall for it
Yeah, to be fair I was going to give hime something anyway but then he pulled out some paper and started telling me about his rate after we got back! 😤😂

Ohhhh just found your channel and this video :) I'm Vietnamese, and also, at first, I thought that driver was a good guy, until the price of the hat, haha :) That is rather expensive, and he didn't negotiate/bargain for you; fyi, bargain everything and ask for the price before buying or using the product to avoid scams :). Anyhow, I hope that you will have more great adventures in Vietnam and be more aware of the surrounding
Always stay away from those guys who offer you a motorbike tour in Saigon . Most of them are scammers like that guy . He is very well known for scamming tourists . Next time order a Grab taxi ( the equivalent of Uber in SEA ) and you don't have to worry about scam . Their prices are very reasonable and they are very honest .
Thank you! Yeah I know about Grab, and normally I would know better than to fall for a scam like this, but this guy was smooth haha. To be fair he did straight up lie and say it was free or I could pay him whatever I felt was fair. I don’t take it personally, I still love Vietnam so far! 🙏🏻🇻🇳
One country I wont travel to on my list now after watching this video. That was so sad to see him scaming you, just because you were a tourist. I wish you better luck next time.
Those ppl with bikes are professional scammers...i got scammed by one of them. Mostly happen in Ho chi menh. In Hanoi i never got scammed. Ppl in Hanoi are friendlier.
Dude, ask them to write down and if you can, take a photo with your phone camera. Even restaurants in Commie Vietnam are known to scam foreigners by overcharging them with higher prices than on the menu. And get this, they even have 2 different menus, ones to show you before with lower prices, and another one showing you afterwards with higher prices if you try to dispute. Take photos!
I will say that the prices for the restaurant around here are higher than in the area where I previously stayed when I first arrived here. Thanks for the advice brother! 🙏🏻
They say to always stay away from the guys that come up to you smiling, asking questions and offering you a ride... only scammers do that... But yes, lesson learned... Enjoy your stay... Hat looks good... 😊
I have had experiences in the past where people where genuinely being kind or wanted to show me around I guess this is just a bit unfortunate. Thanks! 😁🙏🏻
@@Jarod_Abroad Awe, that was unfortunate... I'm so glad to hear that you have met kind people, as they are out there... just always remember to use your intuition, listen to your inner voice... 😊🙏🏼 Stay healthy and safe... looking forward to your next video!
If locals can speak that good English to you, they are price tagging you $$$ It's normal in Saigon, you didn't get scammed really. He tried it & you stood half your ground well. There are a lot of hard drug users. Harshly, if they are missing 2 or more teeth, just turn around. Males your age will keep you safe.
Yeah I guess you get similar scams in almost every country. I didn’t just wanna leave because it probably would’ve escalated and I’m still new to Vietnaam so I have no idea how that would actually go down. Thanks for the tip! 🤝🏻
@@Jarod_Abroad After posting that video on RUclips , the police will go after that guy . It's already happened to a sock vendor at Bên Thanh market who wanted to charge a Japanese youtuber 700 000 VND (28 USD ) for 3 pairs of socks and a street fruit vendor in Hanoi who tried to charge an European couple 200 000 VND ( 8 USD ) for 10 jujubes that normally cost only less than 10 000 VND ( 0.4 USD ) Both events were filmed by those tourists and posted on youtube like you did . A few days later the police arrested those two scammers and made them pay a heavy fine that they will remember for the rest of their life . Also be careful with your camera and other valuables . Have a nice stay in Vietnam buddy .
@@Jarod_Abroad yeah the mentioned scammers were arrested by the police and had to pay a fine. Therefore, next time if you get these situations, just come to the police station and these scammers will be fined for sure because it is unacceptable for all native people like me. Overall, it is wise of you to stick to just 200k vnd and the way you handled this situation is good. Hope that you can have great time in Vietnam. If you love the beaches, I suggest you to come to Cà Ná, Bình Tiên, Vĩnh Hy in Ninh Thuan province or Cam Ranh, Doc Let in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa) that are not touristry but the landscapes are so amazing.

I spoke a bit about this in one of my previous videos. I know that you it is probably the right thing to do, but I choose not to because it makes for a much more authentic first impression of the countries I visit. Although it has caused some problems for me in the past where I had not done my due diligence I still prefer it this way, maybe it’s old fashioned of me and perhaps a bit naive given that we have the internet in modern times I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart though because like when I went to Jakarta I got the shock of a lifetime 😳😂 it wasn’t what I was expecting at all! Still very sound advice for all my other viewers though, thanks! 🙏🏻😁
@@Jarod_Abroad that's terrible but hey it is the past and you have learned a lesson. We live in a world where people are not all good, have integrity and honest. I'm glad you put a positive spin on it . For your commenter above. many people only make 200k or less per day in Vietnam. So in comparison whatever you make in your country in a day. multiply that by 4 and tell me if that is a good price for driving someone around for a few hours?
Really good how you show a real scammer, we learn to see the red flags, together withe these comments that is very valuable.

Don't pay the money upfront. Agree on the price upfront and pay at the end.
