The Buddha insisted that the monks remain dependent on the lay support for those, for many other reasons.. it helps to shed the pride . Sense of ' independence' tends to give a false sense of security, and forget the fragile vulnerable nature of life. It helps to appreciate the generosity of others and feel humbled to be at the receiving end. The effort to walk miles for a bowl of food helps to generate a sense of ardency to stay on course, to justify the receipt. It may be very poor people who donate so one must feel worthy of receiving.. no one will give the monks unless they feel happy to give so they really must Cultivate a lot of discipline. It's the training of the disciples that continues to gladden the hearts of the lay people so it works bothways in many levels. There are many mindful practices to train throughout the alms round .. the entire experience is designed to be very rewarding and awakening to the receiver, giver and even the onlookers. Its a beautiful, profound act which is not begging. They don't beg only indicate the readiness to receive if given willingly.

You would never see that here in Australia the young people don't even listen to the priest or church ministers, let alone there parents.
