  • In this live tutorial (originally recorded for Patreon), I'll show you how to set up a CMYK color profile that allows you to import CMYK files (for us in print) as well as how to "soft proof" or preview CMYK colors in GIMP. This tutorial will go along with our How to Create a Business Card tutorial, which we will post on our RUclips channel later today.

    But an actual real CMYK mode, and ability to natively work in CMYK, open CMYK files, and exporting a CMYK file in whatever the format, that seems is not going to be done till version 3.2 or so (in the roadmap... is not even estimated in time.... ), am I right ? . I think for that and a reasonable pricing, the way to go is Affinity Photo (Windows/Mac only), Corel Draw or Xara Designer ( the two latter way more expensive)... Or... Krita, although is not a full image editor (is a digital paint tool) as Gimp is...

    Yes, Im late to the party, but I need to add: Regardless of all of this.... Gimp 2.10 will still NOT open a PSD file saved with a CMYK profile. Such files are often provided by print houses as templates (to show bleed area, safe zone etc). For these, you must convert the PSD template to RGBA (or convert the whole file to PNG - either online or with Imagemagik). Installing the ICC profiles in Gimp won't help you. as I have just now found out.

    I think that Gimp have now made a default option for CMYK as one of a default setting. I went to GIMP preferences to follow your process and I see in "Preferred Profiles" there are now 3 default headings that are set out as follows >

    Greyscale profile - (None)
    CYMK profile - (Generic CMYK Profile)

    The ICC color profiles are no longer available from Adobe. Any other way to get these? Does Adobe own the rights to CMYK or something and no other company can produce these color profiles? Also this whole process doesn't seem to work if you use GIMP on a Linux OS, since Adobe products don't actually work on Linux at all. Case in point the need for some other company to provide CMYK color profiles. I am not a professional graphic designer (obviously) so I do not understand why only one company can make CMYK color profiles. Aren't they just colors? Every tutorial on the internet starts with "download the Adobe ICC color profiles" -- this is really annoying and makes no sense.

    Hi! Thank you for your video! Two questions: Why by lowering the contrast on my image will reduce the number of colors that CYMK cannot reproduce? i.e.: The Out of Gamut pixels are reduced as you reduce the contrast. 2) If CYMK apparently reduces the contrast, can increasing the contrast counteracts changing from RGB to CYMK? • @DaviesMediaDesign

      You can just keep the soft proof on while you work if you insist on working in GIMP. Otherwise, there are other programs that allow you to edit in CMYK mode - such as Photoshop (though that costs a pretty penny).

      The icc or icm files are the same for Linux and Windows. You can use "Windows" icc (or icm) files. Now getting the files from the device manufacturer is the challenge. All the devices I have don't have profiles on the manufacture's website. Lesson learned: Do'n throw away the disk that comes with the device.
      If you are stuck, in addition to the Adobe site, Scribus comes with a few profiles, as does Texlive.

    Coated vs uncoated??? Difference?

    • @DaviesMediaDesign
      @DaviesMediaDesign  6 лет назад +3

      It's just the type of media you are printing to - coated means there is some sort of coating that is applied to the paper you are printing to (and thus effects how the ink is absorbed). Uncoated means there is no coating, and the ink absorbs into the paper easier. Hope that helps!

      Davies Media Design thanks dude, you're a total snack ❤

    • @TheJoker-zt4nk
      @TheJoker-zt4nk 5 лет назад

      Actually "Coated, Uncoated" hasn't to do with how the ink is absorbed to the paper. This is part of a 4 color print process, it's basically a clear coating of ink on top of the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black. It's not a GLOSS so much but it does give a bit of protection. Regardless that's on the 4 Color Printer end, which you chose for any design program won't make a difference. (It's regarding Professional Printers who do mass-production printing of Magazines, Brochures, etc No not like a Kinko's -those are more of a copier machine.)
